Runner mom- i recently got my gait checked as well....shoes are an important factor for sure

Kate- no prob! I don't understand the difference btwn sports chiro/therapist..(basically I go to my chiro b/c he has sports background, has studied Active release techniques, is also a runner & therefore offers a variety of treatment not just adjustments to my back & hips)

Thanks to both of you for the information. Not to continue to hijack the thread, but would you suggest a sports chiropractor over a sports therapist?

RUN-GIRL71, I am in the 'avoid the flare-ups' camp too. It seems once you develop this nasty condition you're prone to it.

I also changed my shoes. A few years ago I had my gait analyzed, and have been wearing a moderate stability shoe ever since (Brooks Adrenaline's). I had my gait re-analyzed recently, and found out I am now a very mild over pronator on one side, and not at all on the other side....silly me didn't realize this could change over the years with all of the strength training and yoga I have done. So I switched to Brooks Ravenna's (which are just a tiny bit more stability than a neutral shoe). They feel a bit weird to me so far, but I am giving them a fair shot! So far so good.

Hi Kate, just read your question re- i.t issues

When i was really hurting I found the routine on this link really helpful- http://www.runnersworld.com/injury-treatment/stretching-and-strengthening-exercises-iliotibial-band-syndrome?page=

( The one with a girl wearing an orange shirt demonstrating exercises )

Now, i just need to avoid flare-ups So I have lots of different things that I do to help:

1-Yoga 2x per week (at least) at a nearby studio
2-Chiropractor 1x per week. He does Active release on me. It really hurts but its worth it.
3-the stick-(replaced my foam roller ) & roll my legs out after long runs
4-post run stretch routine. I hold my stretch between 30-45seconds, set my iphone to make sure the stretches are long enough
5- if i am tired or hurting i take a day off of running or replace with time on my elliptical

I wii be kind to my body in 2014; eat well, hydrate often, exercise & rest

My IT band issues were resolved by staying very committed to a specific stretch and strength/core program I learned during PT. My problem stemmed from imbalances in glute/quad/hip/hamstring strength, plus a lot tightness. I have a stength, stretch and core program that I follow pretty much daily (I don't do the same things every day, I have a schedule). I also do more cross training, mostly spinning twice per week in addition to running.

Hi. I was curious what you did to resolve/work on your IT Band issues. I recently ran my first 1/2 (November in Philly) and around Mile 10 I started having issues. I took about 2 months of rest off and am slowly getting back to running again, including a 5k last weekend where I started encountering the same issues. Any information would helpful.

My club has the same program but no one actually does the Wed and Sat runs. Days off (or cross-training) are more important. Anyway, there's no point in running the day before a long run if this is your first HM.

Good luck to you on your half training. Running with a group will help.

The half is an awesome distance! I also trained for my first with a running group, and did all of my long runs on Sundays with them once I hit the 8 mile point.

Best of luck to you in your training!

Hello!
I have ran a 10k each spring for the last 4years and i enjoy a run just about every other day to exercise my dog.. I have signed up for the Ottawa Half Marathon May 26th and I am excited, nervous, happy and scared all at the same time

I have trained for various long runs before (niagara international marathon & around the Bay 30km) and never made it to the start line due to i.t band issues. In training my longest run was 18km on a blistering hot july morning.

I have joined a run club and am hoping training with veteran runners will help me achieve my goal. I will meet them tuesdays and sunday long runs and have to run on my own on wednesdays, thursdays & saturdays!
