I trained for my first half with the Hal Hidgeons Novice 1 program and it was great. I gave myself an extra 2-3 weeks in case I had a bad run or a minor injury but it never happened. Have a great time!!

Welcome to the team! There are lots of great HM training programs, and I find myself looking at many and then twicking to fit what I'm looking for (running every other day) Best wishes to you!!

Welcome to the team! Good luck to you! I'm pretty much starting out from scratch myself, although I've completed my first half marathon already (September 2012). I was out for a few months because of an injury :(

You don't say how long you have been running, but for the most part, you should be running about 3x a week consistently for a year before even starting half marathon training. However, if you had been running for a year or more before your 4 month hiatus, then you probably can start training later this year, as long as you start back to running now.

Most half marathon training programs are 12 weeks long, with the longest run at 10-12 miles. There are free ones that you can download, but most of them have you running 4x a week. You can get by with 3x a week as long as you cross-train on at least 2-3 other days with things like cycling, swimming, zumba, etc. I found a really good beginner's plan a few years ago on coolrunning.com, but they no longer have it. I posted it on a blog and you can look at it at www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_
individual.asp?blog_id=3413896
. If you have any questions about it or have a hard time figuring out what it says, shoot me a Spark e-mail and I'll translate it for you.

Good luck on your HM goals!

i'm a fan of the Galoway run/walk method, but I know there are quite a few good programs out there.

I have run many 5k's and one 10k, but I would like to train for a half marathon. I am basically starting out from scratch because it has been about 4 months since I have trained. I need a beginner's schedule to start training. Does anyone have a schedule that I can follow and start slow? I haven't signed up for a race yet, but I am wanting to run one by the end of the year.
Thank you.
