Hi! I'm also running the Disney Princess Half Marathon in February! I have run two 5K's (ever), and am very new to running (started in January), and like you, I only like it when I'm finished. I'm pretty scared at the thought of training for a half..but excited because the Princess looks so much fun! Anyway...good luck everyone! And if anyone is looking for a training buddy...I'll need one! :)

Hi Half Marathoners!

I would like to learn from those ahead of me, in terms of fitness goals and achievement, especially how they react to injury and setbacks, so that I can be as mentally prepared as possible to overcome mine, since these befall each of us from time to time.

Glad to be part of the Team!

Hi,

I have been walking and I will get back into running/jogging soon I just signed up for a half marathon in Jan. I will probably walk/run it can you guys suggest a good training plan to follow.

There is also the possibility that I might walking it because of a friend doing it with me if you have any suggestions on training for that as well.

I am 230 and she is 280 so we are over weight but by January who knows we might both be running :D. I would love to see her run. I think it would be the first time I have seen her do that. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Good afternoon! My name is Emily and I'm running the Disney Princess Half Marathon in February 2013. Last weekend I finished my first 5K in several years, and I've got two more coming up in August and September. I've been running consistently for about two months and am really looking forward to the half in February. Registration for it opens on my birthday, and so that's my gift to myself! My relationship with running is such that I don't love it while I'm actually doing it, but once I'm done it's all I can think about. Can't beat that!

Greetings! I am running my first half September 2nd in Va Beach with my daughter (who is 30 years younger than I). Would I ever have considered this on my own? No! My daughter sent me an email request in Feb and I accepted. She is in the Navy and was deployed at that time so how could I refuse her request? I began training 18 weeks out on April 23rd and am plugging along. Is it getting easier? Yes. Do I love running? Not yet. Our longest run to date is six miles and I am focusing on one run at a time because the thought of 13.1 miles is still beyond me!

Greetings! I'm Maggie and I'm new to this whole half marathon thing. I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you and cheering you on and inevitably drawing inspiration from you all!

I'm a non runner who hates running, but who is using a half marathon as an excuse to both get back into shape and to prove that I can commit to something that doesn't involve beer, beaches, going to sporting events and/or attractive men. I'm training with some friends who are holding me accountable (and I them, I suppose) so I have a pretty good support system in place already. And I imagine that you all will make sticking it out even that much more worthwhile.

Hi! I'm Teri. At 58 and my heaviest weight of 217, I started to make changes in my life. I had experienced torn MCLs in both knees and had them "repaired". My daughter is a runner and 2 years ago, I attended her cross country meets on crutches and thought I would never be able to walk long distances again. In January, I started walking again - really walking! So far this year, I've participated in numerous 5K events and tomorrow will do my 2nd 10K. No stellar performances here - just finishing is stellar! In the past month, I have begun to run a little more each time I'm out. I've signed up for the "Iron Horse Half-Marathon" in Midway, KY on October 14th! It's a beautiful, but somewhat hilly course. My goal is to get my time down to below the 14:00 minute mile pace requirement - run/walking.

Hi Everybody! My name is Erica. I'm 25 years old and I just started running about 9 months ago. I'm participating in several 5K's and a 10K. I've been training for a half marathon for about 6 weeks now and my longest run thus far has been about 8 miles. I am signed up for a half marathon in Long Island October 7th (It's my first). I've been using the Hal Hidgeon's training program and it's going well so far.

emoticon everyone! I'm Bonnie. I can't believe I'm thinking about ... completing the Rock & Roll Half Marathon in Dallas in March 2013! Once of my good Sparkfriends that I met in person a few weeks suggested it to me. I just began Sparking again in August and running in October. I've done a couple of virtual 10Ks and ran my 1st "real" 5K race in March 2012. I've just never walked more than 8 miles and 13.1 sounds daunting. But, if I do the HM, it will definitely give me a great feeling of success and show me what I capable of!

Anyone have any tips on how to train? I've noticed some apps that I can use for my Iphone but they start out at $5 and I don't have a lot of money. I'm going to have to safe my birthday, Christmas, extra money to pay for the race entrance fees.

Anways, I thought I should sign up for a team if I'm going to maybe do the HM. Even if I don't do it, the training will definitely help me build my endurance, strength, cardio, etc. Not sure what I'll able to provide this team, but I will do what I can along the way.

Hi everyone! I'm Lisa and I've been running for about 14 months. I've run 7 5-ks and 3 10-ks. I really want to do a 1/2 but I've hit a wall with progress. The farthest I've been able to run is 10 miles and I totally bunked out and felt awful for days afterward. So I've backed off a bit and am building back up slowly.

There is a 1/2 nearby me in October and another in November. I haven't decided which one yet, but I really want to do one.

Hi, I am another newbie... I have been running on and off since 5 years and got over some knee problems. Right now I have a 10k planed for September and I am dreaming to do a half marathon one day...maybe in a year. I joined the team to get some motivation and information of more experienced half-marathon runners.

Hello everyone my name is Heather. I have signed up to do my first half on November 3rd 2012. I starting running a little over a year. I was never a runner, hated it in fact. My weight gain didn't hit me until after I turned 30 and baby number 2 didn't help either. I started running shortly after my weight loss. I have run 8 races and can't wait till the next one:) Happy Running!

Hello everyone!

I just signed up to run my first half marathon in March 10, 2013 and although excited I am scared at the same time. I am able to easily walk 8-10 miles, I hope that I will be able to complete this one too.

Any suggestions?? Open to all!

MY family wanted to start running and so we all went for a first run yesterday for then Week 1 Day 1 C25k. Branden is age 17 Heidi is age 15 and mom is age 64. July 19 their is a 5 K race. There is a Half a Marathon october 14, 2012 that I would like to do. I walked the half marathon last october 9, 2011 but this year I really want to run it.

I have download the apps below I have used the C25K the free app . I am wondering if I should start using the for 10 K Trainer Pro app or the 13.1 for pink Half marathon. The other factor is that I want to run with my family as we are all excited that we are running together. We are all at different levels of fitness. So how do I juggle this for the whole family?

C25 K is a free App
10 K Trainer Pro now a free app
13.1 for pink (Half Marathon)
26.2 for Pink (Marathon)

All apps are $1.99 accept for the free app for C25K

Welcome to all the new team members.
Best of luck to all of you as you train for your first half marathon.
I think you'll find this group very helpful.
Ask any questions you have and I'm pretty sure someone has already been through the situation and can offer some advice.
Looking forward to seeing you on the message boards.

Hello Team! I've been a member for a couple months but just realized I haven't introduced myself. I'm Ananda from Brazil, I've run a fair amount of 5 and 10k races and one 15k last year but I have never truly followed a program, either because I was lazy or because I got sick in the middle of it and decided to quit. That has changed since January when I started using Hal Higdon's and I've been running farther and faster.
I was gonna go to Rio to run my very first HM in July but I won't be able to attend due to a big family reunion... So instead, I'll run a 25k on June 17th and I've been training hard to do my best. I hope I can learn and share experiences with you guys! emoticon

Hey all, I'm Kirk. Signed up for my 1st half marathon to be run in September. Farthest I've run are a few 10K's. My body didn't like doing that much being over 190 lbs. It seems that runners are lean for a reason, it makes the going easier. So not only will I be training but steadily trying to lose these last few pounds before race day. Looking to learn from you gurus on the way of the long run. emoticon to you all with upcoming races.

Hello everyone! My name is Sara and I am 25 years old. I joined spark people a month ago.
I have finely started taking this being healthier thing more serious. Not for anyone but
myself. I have joined a work out class twice a week and I have committed to walking at least
an hour a day. I have lost 22 pounds but I still have a long ways to go. (43 pounds) There is
Half Marathon in October that I want to sign up for. I know with that much time I will be ready.
I have the option to walk/run it. I am not a runner now but I know I can be. Does anyone have
a good program for me to follow? I have done some research but I am looking for something
that really works. Please let me know. And I am glad to be a part of this group! emoticon

Hi! I'm Heather. I'm 29, from Hampton, VA. I just joined the team, but I've been on Spark for years. I have recently decided to sign up for my very first half marathon, it's on October 7th of this year, so I have 5 months to train! In the past 2 months, I have completed an 8k and a 5k, beating my goal time both times. Signing up for a race, much less finishing one is something I never thought I'd do in a million years. This time last year, I had a hard time getting out of bed due to my health problems, but things are doing better and I feel better than I have in a long time. I'm happier than I've been in a long time and I want to make running a way of life for me. I've had a few people tell me that what I'm doing with my life is inspiring, and that motivates me even more. I'm changing my life, and running/jogging is helping with that.

I definitely still have a long way to go and a lot of work to do but I'm determined and motivated. If anyone has any words of advice, please feel free to pass them on to me!

Heather

Hi. I just finished my second half marathon (the Flying Pig Half) and, even though I was underprepared, I finished under 3 hours and had a blast. My first hafl was last year's Pig. I've already put another half marathon on my schedule for November, though it conflicts with my first love: cyclocross. I also will be starting to do duathlons this year, as well as some mtb racing. Everything is to get me so I don't suck as bad a cx as I have for the last 5 years. One other thing: I'm old and fat. Okay, that's 2 things. A third thing would be math is not my strong suit.

Morning all ... I am a walker, not a runner. But, I have caught the marathon bug, and there is no cure for it! 2012 is the year that I complete my bucket list for health and sport. The ultimate goal is to walk the Marine Corps Marathon (full) on October 28. And, yes, I am signed up.

It started with an 8K race back in March. I walked it maintaining a 14 minute pace. Steady all the way, and felt the accomplishment that only crossing a finish line can give.

This past weekend, I walked the National College Blue Ridge Half ... a part of the toughest road race in America! Yes, I walked it ... but, I had to laugh when several runners admitted to pacing themselves on me because I never broke stride. I completed this mountainous & hilly course in just over 3 hours.

Next on my list is to conquer the Soldier Field 10-miler Memorial Day weekend ... the finish line is through the tunnel onto the 50 yard line. COOOOOOL.

After that, I am signed up for a few short events, and the Mid-Atlantic Tough Mudder (as a team) and ultimately the MCM.

In the meantime I am looking for one more half to do between now and then.

So, who am I? Hmmmmmm ... I am a determined 50+ woman who believes that life is just beginning ... and that it is what it is.

I hail from Metro DC area and am loving life.

Hello, I've decided to join this team because I will be running my first 1/2 in June! I was also looking for new friends that share the same running goals and challenges that I do!

Hello all! I am new to Sparkpeople, and although not technically new to running, I have only ran 5ks...and that was several years ago.

Is it okay to join this team though I am not able to actually train for a half yet? I am looking at possible foot surgery this summer, and am only walking until I get the surgery or the OK to run. I SO want to return to running and to finish a half-marathon! Maybe I could WALK one first?

Hi everyone! My first half is this coming up this Saturday. I am an extremely slow runner, so my goal for this one is just to finish. And hopefully not be the last one :)

Hi MyDogTony,
If you feel ready then go for it. It would mark a huge step in the healing process too, which though difficult, might be very good for you in many ways.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Hi everybody. I started running 1/2 marathons a few years ago - but a car accident and two personal tragedies have taken their toll on my weight, health, and running. I'm trying to get back in the game and have been running off and on with the goal of walking the half in Fredericksburg in May. I also registered to run the Chicago Marathon with a group from my church. I swore I would never do a marathon, but something about it seemed like a good idea at the time!

Would love to be part of a group sharing ideas and support.

Hi team,

I've been running since I quit smoking in September 2011. My first half marathon is May 6th in Colorado. So far, I've done a 5k (Turkey Trot Nov 2011) and a 10 miler (April 15 2012). Just another week of training and then I'm off to Colorado to get acclimated to the altitude! I love running, the sense of accomplishment I get every weekend when I add another mile or two to my long run, and every time I go out for a weekday training run and it feels easier than the last, or my pace is better than before. I've been using Sparkpeople recently to help me figure out why I haven't lost any weight since I've started to run (I have lost minimal inches) and how to keep my diet healthier. I hope to learn more about running and diet on this board!

LOL. HI Rollstar!

Something you said made me smile... the "after I'm finished" part. A friend of mine is an avid racer (often 2 races/week) and he HATES to run. I asked him not long ago why he did it and he said "because I love to run once I'm finished!" :)

Hey! After dreading running my whole life, I discovered c25k a few years ago and now I LOVE it (mostly after I'm finished, lol)! I've done a few 5k's and one 10k and I'm looking to run my first half in December! I'm also using this as motivation for me to lose the pounds I've put back on since my last race---last June.

Hello everyone, I'm signed up for the Royal Parks half on 7 October, with Striver57, and would love to have tips and encouragement for training! I began running last year, with a C25K program, went on to do a 6k in Paris (with Striver of course!) last September (just after my 56th birthday) and now (thanks again to Striver) am aiming a bit higher.

Hello, all. I've ran six half marathon's and have a seventh coming up in November. I kind of let my training go for a while and have only recently started really sticking to my plan, but I love running as a sport and am interested in hearing what works and what doesn't from everyone here. :-)

Hello everyone! I just signed up for my 2nd half in October. I did my first a few years ago, but I walked almost the whole thing. This time my goal is run the whole thing, although I will allow myself to walk past the water stations because I'm not coordinated enough to run and drink at the same time emoticon .

My current pace is an average of 13 min/mile and by the time of the race I'm hoping to get that down to at least 12 min/mile if not a little faster, so a lot of speed work is in my future!
