Hey guys, I'm new to thins forum,
and recently BACK to both SparkPeople and half marathon training.

Two and a half years ago I training for half marathon (walking) throughout the winter and did the Toronto Marathon in May. I was 2nd in my age group @ 3:08. I did another one in the fall that was a bit slower.

I fell off the wagon unfortunately after that, only training a bit, and virtually none this past winter. The result was inevitable. Since my lowest weight, 2 years back, I've regained 37 lbs.

Anyway, I finally got myself motivated again. I started walking again, and dieting about 10 days ago. Already lost 7 lbs. and am starting to feel the benefits of the walking already too.

I haven't committed to which 1/2 marathon to do yet, and I won't be ready for a spring one as I restarted my training too late. But I am committed to get there.

Hello, I am new to the forum. I am signed up for a half at the end of June. I am part of a training team which is very helpful. I've only been running since last September. I've done several 5k's and one 10k. I plan on doing additional 5k's this spring and summer as well as 10k's. In my training I am at 9 miles for my long run this week. I started out running by myself and lately (since joining the training group) I have started running with other people. I much prefer running with other people, they help motivate me and push me along the way!!! But occasionally I enjoy a quiet run by myself. Looking forward to my half, just a little nervous about it. But I know I have time to continue to train so I will be able to do well. Looking forward to being part of this team!!

New to this group. Until I started getting fit about 16 months ago, I hadn't run more than a few 100 yards at a time in several decades and hadn't ever ran further than a couple of miles (which was back in Junior High during gym). Spent 2013 doing mainly weight lifting, learning to eat better (lost 70 pounds along the way) and interval training.

Since the beginning of 2014, I've gradually gone from intervals to running longer distances without breaks in the middle and have been gradually running longer distances over the last few months. I ran my first 5K in mid March and completed my first 10K last weekend (in a steady rain which was lots of fun).

Now I just signed up for a half-marathon in Late July.

Looking forward to a very fit training period and a lot of fun.

TRAXINA - I'm in the same boat. I aimed at a late April half, got injured, and had to trade down to the 5K two years in a row.

This year, I paid for a group training program pointing at that half, and we're training in the worst winter weather in 30 years. I'm currently nursing a turned ankle from the warmup run on bumpy snow to get to a hill workout; but the coaches are helping me deal with it better (or less badly) than I would on my own. The jury is still out on whether I'll be able to run 13.1 miles on April 27, but I remain hopeful.

What have I changed? Physical therapy last year addressed weak hip abductors and balance issues I didn't know i had, in addition to working on the obvious foot injury. While the turned ankle is frustrating, it's only the ankle. My legs feel fine, which is a contrast to being generally banged up all through my lower body prior to getting injured the last two winters.

Hello!
I've run a couple half marathons but I invariably get injured at some point during the training. In fact, my last race was a smokin' personal best -- of course, that was my six-minute-mile hubby running with my bib while I nursed a bum leg.

My next race is just before Memorial Day, and I really want to train properly and avoid injury. I'm sure there's a message board about avoiding injury, so I'll be headed to that thread.

Hi! I'm new to this group. My first half marathon is on Memorial Day. I've ran several 5Ks and 10Ks over the past years, but it's time to take it up a notch! I'm excited and terrified about covering this distance, but I'm hoping that with all the time I have between then and now (and being able to comfortably run a 10K), that I should be able to accomplish it. :) I welcome any tips, tricks or advice!

Welcome LCM. It sounds like you have a good start and a plan in mind. You are on the right track, and the only way to find out if you can do it is to get out in the middle of it.

I've signed up for my first half marathon. I've run four 5Ks and one 10K in the last year. I've started a 12-week program that will culminate with the half mid-April. I'm terribly nervous and not sure if I've taken on more than I can handle, so I'm looking for motivation - so far this seems to be a good place to find some.

Hi!

I was on Spark a couple of years ago, but I sort of drifted away once I had reached my goal. Now I'm back to get back down to my goal weight.

Reading this group motivated me to run my first HM in 2011, and I have run about 8 since then.

I sprained my big toe the first week of the year, so I'm not training right now. Unfortunately, I signed up to run the Seaside HM on Feb 23. I haven't decided what I'm going to do about that yet.

Hi everyone! emoticon
I'm not new to Spark - I've been a member for about 1.5 years and have lost about 40 lbs :)
A little less than a year ago I started C25K, I had run XC in high school but was never good & hated running! But it's always been a goal of mine. I ran my 1st 5K in June 2013 and loved it! I then trained for a 10K. I didn't end up running the actual race because of weather (December in New England) and haven't found one to sign up for yet, but I will and I've run my 6.2 a few times!

There is a half marathon in Boston on Memorial Day weekend that I would like to run. I also am going to run a 10 miler at the end of April. My dad is a runner and will be running with me! I plan to officially start training at the end of March when the winter weather starts to break. I don't have a treadmill so I either run in my neighborhood or do workout DVD's at home.

Some day, I'd love to run the Tinkerbell half in Disney and bring my family to cheer me on!

Hey all! I'm new to Spark people. Been running about 3 or 4 years because I like it. I've done quite a few halves and 2 fulls. Currently training to do a half in Rome the first weekend in March. Running hasn't been quite as fun to me lately, so hoping to respark (yeah, I see the pun there) my motivation and run for more than weight loss/maintenance/bc I feel I have to.

Hey Y'all! My name is Holly and I'm from a small town in the boondocks of North Carolina. I have set a goal to run my first HM in November of this year. Until then, I will be training and running every 5k and 10k I come across this year.

Greetings from Alberta, Canada. My name is Shannon & I am registered to run my first 1/2 marathon on February 1 in Maui. (Save the Whales) I've been training for the past 12 weeks using John Stanton's guide. (run 10 minutes, walk 1). I'd love to hear any advice or tips you may have for me so that I can have a great first 1/2! (I'm turning 55 in a couple of weeks and running a 1/2 was a goal I set for myself).

Hi, I'm Mary and live in the Central Valley of California along with spending time at our Vacation/Retirement home in the Carson Valley of Nevada. So I train at both sea level and 5,000 ft. I completed 2 half marathons last year and 2 5Ks. My daughter talked me into running/walking a 5k with her about 3 years ago and I've just kept it up somewhat. My true love activity is swimming, but if we're traveling I can't always find a place to swim, plus I know for bone health in need to run/walk.

I've signed up for 2 half marathons this year and have several swimming events in mind.

Hi, I am CJ and I live in beautiful Colorado! Next 4th of July I am running my first half. Over the past couple years I have completed a handful of 5k and 10k's and was looking for a longer term goal to help me stick with running as a primary cardio source. I am a really new runner. In addition to following a training schedule to help me prep, I am also tracking 10k steps per day to keep me motivated each day.

Looking forward to making some new friends, acquiring some great tips on training and interacting with the team.

Hello and Happy Holidays to all:

I am 62 years old and have run 2 Half Marathons. My training included aqua jogging 45 to 60 minutes 2 to 3 times per week. I also run on the treadmill (not my favorite) but I know I have to have weight bearing sessions when I can't get outside. My issue is despite strength training 2 times a week and running I am still not able to lose the 20 pounds I have held on to for several years. Starting with Sparkpeople again with confidence that I will succeed. Have signed up for a 10k in February and will definitely do the Philly 1/2 Marathon again this fall.

Noticed my profile is wrong-- currently weigh 140. Will fix

Hi everyone! I'm Jaclyn. I ran my first half marathon (Virginia Wine Country) back in 2011 and then took a fairly long break from running for a number of reasons, and I'm just getting back into the sport and remembering how much I loved it - although I've always been slooooooow and always will be. I'm registered for my second half in June of 2014 (50 Yard Finish in Orchard Park, NY) and am hoping to run two more in addition to that one in 2014.

In addition to running, I love hiking, kayaking, doing pretty much anything outdoors, Zumba, yoga, and chasing after my toddler.

It's nice to "meet" you all!

Hi, I'm Marsha. I just ran my second half marathon. I didn't start running until I was 61 years old and had lost over 80 pounds. Now, after decades of being a couch potato, I love to run!! I'm proud of my PR this last Saturday on a hot and hilly course - 2:26:47.

I'm signed up for 2 more HM this running season: St Pete Women's Half Marathon on Nov 24th in costume (Team Ladybug - see costume on wallpaper on my SparkPage) with ONEKIDSMOM and her cousin, and Feb 23, 2014, Disney Princess. Would love to have someone to run the Princess HM with. I understand it is a crowded race and not conducive to PRs, but not hilly. Should be fun. I'm thinking I'll dress as Cinderella's fairy godmother who got fit!!

Not sure if I'll ever want to run a full marathon. I've been doing Galloway, and not much strength training nor stretching. I ran my first HM in 1 min run/1 min walk intervals; second in 3 min run/1 min walk intervals. I straight run 5Ks and my PR is 27:33. I playing with attempting to qualify for the National Senior Games. We'll see. So I'm debating whether to perhaps start straight running (no walk intervals) and really work on strength and stretching. Would I need to give up half marathons? My Galloway group is just not real keen on 5Ks, but I'm more competitive. In my recent HM I came in 4th in my age group, just out of the awards. I almost always place in a 5K. I'm turning 65 soon and I'm tempted to just refocus on local 5Ks and collect my bling!!!

Glad to join a team of people who love to run!!! Looking forward to get to know all of you.

Hello all.
My name is Justin and Im fairly new to running and hoping to make it a permanent part of my life. I started running as a way to lose weight and as a challenge to myself. After drudging through a few weeks of C25k I started to get a real sense of accomplishment out of it and craved more and more. However after I accomplished my initial 5k goal, and my life got busy I sort of faded away from running and weight-loss, and ended up putting on even more weight than when I first started.

But Ive started again and this time have already followed through with my first race, an impromptu 8k lol, with several more races planned over the next few months.

I know this is a half marathon team but this is what I want to push towards in the next year. I want to go slow enough that I wont get hurt but I know that for me I have to have something to work towards, not just a workout routine or schedule to adhere to. Hopefully I can pick up some tips as I increase mileage, and work towards my first Half

Hello everyone. I am a relatively new long distance runner. I have only been doing it for a couple of months. I have a few 8 miles runs under my belt and last Saturday I ran 10.02 miles in 2 hours and 2 minutes. I have never done any kind of half marathon training, but I just signed up for my first half marathon on Thanksgiving Day. I have never done any kind of official race at all so I am a bit nervous. Tomorrow I am going to do my best to try and run 11 miles, which would be a new record for me. I know that if I can run 13.1 miles BEFORE my official half marathon on Thanksgiving Day it will do loads for my confidence.

I do not know when the last run is that I should do before my official run. I do not know what I am supposed to eat the night before or the morning of. I will gladly take any advice you have to give me. Thanks!

Hi,

I haven't done a half-marathon yet, but have been running since last October with numerous 5K's and one 10K. I think next year is my time and am looking for one in the spring. I run using intervals (or Galloway), because it helps keep my injuries down. Happy to be here so I can sponge up all the wisdom!

Hi,
My name is Rebecca. I am walking my first half marathon on November 16th. I am super excited. I am a virtual walker.
I wanted to loose weight and be healthier but I needed a good reason to consistently exercise. When I heard about a half marathon that raises money to help provide resources to children who have been abused I could not pass it up.
I found a 12 week walking half marathon schedule to follow and have been working hard for 8 weeks. Only four more weeks until the big day.

I have lost five pounds so far.

Excited!

Hi! I'm Hazel and I ran my first half marathon last November as part of Disney's Wine and Dine weekend. After taking a year off, I'm starting to run again and am currently signed up for 3 5K's before Thanksgiving.

I plan on running 2 half marathons in 2014 and will try my hand at the full Chicago Marathon next October. The half marathons are in Atlanta on March 23 and in Wildwood, NJ, on May 18. I'll be running Chicago on October 12, 2014. Also, I'll be running the year as a fundraiser for the American Brain Tumor Association. The team name is Team Carpe Diem, meaning Seize The Day.

If anyone is looking to run these races, let me know! If you're looking to join my team, even better! emoticon

Hi I am Michelle and am running my first half marathon on 10/19! I can't wait and am totally excited. I have been training since May (leaving enough time in case of injuries or training delays). Once this is over, I am definitely going to sign up for another one. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Finally getting over here to post! Kristin in Michigan here. I just committed myself to doing the Indy 500 Mini-Marathon in May of 2014. I am terrified and excited at the same time. Will be doing it with two, dear Spark friends, so it is a guaranteed great day. I am relatively new to running and struggle big time. My body and mind love trails over pavement, which means I have to work that pavement in. To celebrate signing up I am buying a new pair of running shoes this weekend!

I am running my first half in November! I've ran a ton of 10k races and decided a few months ago that I should take my training to the next level. I ran 8 miles this weekend which is the longest I've ever run. I'm nervous about the race but I know that it's about finishing, not trying to make a 'good' time.

Hi, I go by "Kels" on SP. Been on SP since 2007. Joined this team today. Been a walker for years, never thought I'd ever run. I ran an entire 10K for the first time two weeks ago, but since my half marathon training required 8 miles that day, I grabbed my finisher medal and kept running to complete 8 miles.

My first half marathon is Nov. 10. If I can register on time.

I joined because of the team icon on "ROSIEJP"s sparkpage.

I started running a little over two years ago. I've run a number of 5K and 10Ks since then but now I'm ready for a new challenge. Trying to train so I can run my first half marathon this winter.

Hi Everyone. My name is Michaela...anyway, earlier this week I decided one of my goals is going to be running a half marathon. I haven't even ran a mile yet, but I'm optimistic! I figure I would build up my walking speed and miles first, then focus on running. Anyway, nice to meet you.

Hi there! This is Boodiggety sending a shout out. Just call me "Boo" for short. My real handle is Steph. I have started my weight journey at 302 lbs now down to about 286 lbs. I have always wanted to do a half marathon. I'm signing up for the Pretty Mud run that is a 5k. I figured that would be a huge accomplishment for me if I can finish a 3 mile race. I would love encouragement and advice on how to prep and walk/run a 3 mile. One of these days I'll get to post in here that I've finished a half marathon! Hope y'all are having an amazing weekend!

hello...New to the group. I'm not new to running but I've been off about a year and am trying to get back in the game. I ran the Disney Princess Half and the Disneyland half in 2011 to complete the Coast to Coast Challenge...then I ran sporadically through 2012...then I quit running and got fat. Done being fat now...had more fun running :0) We just moved from Colorado to central Florida and I'm only 45 minutes away form Disneyworld now so it'd be really silly of me to not take advantage of being able to run all the fun events they put on! Soooooo...I need to lose 20 pounds to get my endurance back and be ready to run. Doing a C25K program to ease my squidgy self back into it. Looking forward to seeing y'all on here

Hi, I'm Julia. I've run off and on since freshman year of college, but I've been running fairly consistently for the last year or year and a half. I've run a few 5Ks, a mud run, and now I'm signed up for the Route 66 Half Marathon at the end of November. I'm on week three of my 16 week schedule and just wanted to get some more pointers.

Hi. I'm Kelly and live in Omaha, NE. I'm running my first half on Sept 7th and have been training for 16 weeks now. My training schedule (Jeff Galloway training method) has me running my half this next week but I still have 5 weeks to go until my actual race. I'm unsure how I'm going to adjust my training - if I should do a moderately long run next week (like 8 or 9 miles) and continue to alternate a longer run with a 4-5 mile run weekly until my half. Any suggestions?

recently sick of the ever-tightening of my pants, I just signed up for my first half-marathon since a foot injury from a marathon I ran in October 2012. I am a little surprised at how much happier I feel by just setting the goal. Next comes the hard part. I have 10 weeks to train in the hot hot heat.Wish me luck.

Hi everyone,
This is Hetal, new to running. Have just learned to have fun excercising. Now want to make it a goal. I want to run a half marathon. I have run more/walked less 4 miles, this spring. I am inspired by everyone here that show such love for running. I will rely on all you friends out there to keep me going. I have not signed up for any more runs (did 2 this year), cause I don't think I am ready. If, you think otherwise let me know, of anything that is going on in Wisconsin that will help me move forward :)
Will keep you posted!

Take a deep breath, it calms the mind:)

Hello, my name is Regina. I am doing my second half marathon Oct. 12th. I am using the biggest loser training. I am hoping this training will help me stay focused and on track. Not much of a runner. I can run at most for a minute every 3-5 minutes. But I am trying to I prove that. It's sad because I was doing very well at one time, but have gained back 30 lbs I lost, and I can't stay focused. Hoping this team and the training is what I need to stay motivated.

1. Lose 10 pounds in Jan.

Hi my name is Tricia and I am new to this SparkTeam but I am not new to Half Marathons or marathons. I started out run/walking in 2007 inspired by the Disney marathon but thought I would never do a full or even a half marathon. Well that changed in 2008 when I signed up for the Disney full marathon. I did a half marathon in the end of 2008 to make sure I could finish. I thought I wouldn't ever do another marathon again.

A year later in 2010 I decided to do not only the Disney full marathon but the half marathon the day before which is called the Goofy race and a half challenge. I did it for charity (Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer) and I had so much fun I decided to do it in 2011 as well. I took 2012 off from doing races but came back strong in 2013 and did 3 half marathons in 84 days the beginning of the year and I have 1 more that I signed up for but about 3-4 more that I want to sign up for before the end of the year.

To date I have done 7 half marathons, 3 full marathons, 2 Goofy's (39.3 miles in 2 days) and countless other smaller races. I also qualified for the group Half Fanatics with my 3 halfs in 84 days. Now I am looking to move up levels. Always something to motivate me to push harder!!

Hi, My name is Linda. I just joined Spark. I have completed several half marathons and 3 marathons but the last one was 2 years ago. Still run as part of my fitness routine but want to get back into a 1/2 marathon training program for a Fall race. Unable to join my former group and coach so want to do my own training. Can anyone recommend a good program. My best 1/2 time was 1:50 .

Hi everyone! My name is Karyn. I am new to running (only consistently started running two months ago) but already signed up for a half in November. I'm really looking forward to learning proper techniques and learning from your experiences. To start, we have a 5k in two weeks and another 5k in July followed by a 10k in September. I'm trying to do this "right" although I have no idea what that really means. Anyway, I look forward to learning and reading more from the posts here.

People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing. That’s why we recommend it daily.

I am also new to spark people. I love to run but usually stay well within my comfort zone. I participate in many 5k and 10k within my community. I have a friend who recently ran in the Tinkerbell run at Disneyland and I figure, hey if it gets me to Disneyland I will try a half, haha!!

I am Casey and got back into running in 2009. I've logged 10 races so far at the 5K and 10K distances and would like to challenge myself with a half. I'm concerned about the time commitment once I hit the longer distance runs but I have five months to work toward the distance. I am using Smart Coach and will be starting with runs 3x per week and working from there. My race will be the end of October 2013.

I'm Emma and just found this Spark Team from another blog. I'm 52, ran my first half at age 50, and I've now finished 4 half marathons. I am not a fast runner, but I can keep a pretty consistent pace over the long haul. My half marathon goal is to (someday!) break 2 hours. Next half is the Tacoma Narrows Half Marathon in August. I am looking forward to tips and inspiration from the group!

My name is Carrie and I started running less than two years ago. I ran my first half March 2012 and my second half Februrary 2013. I have been on a running break since the half in February, but I'm ready to get started back up. Anybody have any tips to help tolerate running in the heat?

Hi, my name is Amy. I have ran many 5k and just committed myself to my first Half in October. A friend told me she "needed" me to. I'm such a sucker. So I'm now in my 2nd week of training. The running is not usally a problem, but I need to get my nutrition straightened out. Any and all advice will be gladly welcome. (Did I mention I'm a bit nervous?)

I'm not a newbie to half's, (I've done 4) but am getting back into running (very slowly) after a severely broken foot. Doctor has cleared and ok'd me to run again. I'm running the "Rock N Sole" 1/2 in WI in June and then the BMO Madison Mini marathon in August. Looking for a training program to follow. I have one from Nike, but looking for other options. I need long runs to be on a weekend. Any suggestions? Thanks all!

I am currently just getting back to running after a break due to knee problems stemming from not doing enough strength training alongside my running. Just getting back into and trying to train for a half. I ran for the first time in several months yesterday and made it the full 5k that I hoped to get in with no knee problems during or after the run.
The longest I have run before is a 10k and then I had to stop running in order to do some elliptical and strength training until my knee was better. This time around I am going to make sure that I stick to doing both running and elliptical for cardio and keep up strength training in hopes of not having anymore knee problems. Still just getting together a plan for training but picked out a schedule on Shape.com that I am loosely going to follow.
Can't wait to continue down this path towards a half-marathon that I started in the Fall and had to take a break from!

So I have decided to start my start/continue my journey to my half marathon run on March 1st, 2013. Going to try to run about 20 miles a week. Will be incorporating more hills and do some speed training also (will see how that goes). Will save my long runs for the weekend when I have time to just think about running. Shooting for September for the actual run. Here goes...BRING IT ON!!

Last year I started my running journey with C25K for 12 weeks and then B210K for 8 weeks. My longest run so far is 9 miles and now my goal is the half marathon. During the snowy season I have only been able to run about once a week with 5K being my distance on each run. Now I am ready to ramp it up again and tackle this thing. Any tips would be awesome.

Besides running I have been doing about 30 to 40 minutes a day 4 times a week with cardio/strength training which I know is helping me with my running goals. Also I walk about 80,000 steps a week. Starting in March though I am hoping a lot of those steps will be from running. So I say again BRING IT ON!!

Hi,

While I've never been much of a runner, friend challenged me to run a half marathon this fall. Being one to not turn down a good challenge, I'm ready to start training. I'm joining this group in the hopes that I'll learn from others.

Hello,
I am new to this team. I recently joined a running group and we are training for a half marathon. The race is on March 24, 2013. Last week 6 miles was our long run/walk. I seem to be on track. I don't care about speed. I just want to finish.

I have been working hard on the nutrition, because I just plain feel better when I eat healthier.

A dream worth pursuing is never easy.

I made the decision to train for my first half next May 2014. You may think that's a long time from now but I'm still very much a beginner. I did my first real 5k last September and I've been training for better time ever since. I picked up a 15 week 10k training resource and am on week 6. I find it pretty difficult to get to 5 miles. I hope to get there for the first time on Monday. Any tips or advice for this newbie would be appreciated!

Hi! I'm new here; I'm Alice, a 20 year old Canadian. I've been running on and off my whole life, but this spring will be my first half marathon. The longest I've run in the past is 8km, so I have a little way to go as far as building up distance goes. Looking forward to the challenge!

Hi! I'm new here! My name is Carrie and I started running just over a year ago. I started from scratch, having never even run a mile before. I worked up to a 5k last March, 10k by June, 15k in September, and completed my first half in October. I'm currently training for my second half in May. I'm also working in weight loss as well. I started running for weight loss, but have learned that there is so much more to it!

Carrie!

Every great accomplishment starts with the decision to try!

My name is Janice and I live in New Brunswick, Cananda. I started running last year and have completed at few 5ks and 10ks. My work running group decided it was time to train for a half, so today was the 1st long run of our 16 week training. Our event is the Fredericton Marathon..who knew I'd be training for a half and enjoy running in this cold/snowy weather!
