Hey there!! Welcome and definitely come by the instructors team!!! We are a funny bunch!!!
Everyone else has nailed your other question - get a HRM. Every body burns calories at a different rate based on height, weight, lean mass, metabolic rate, effort during workouts, etc - so its impossible to "guess" how many an individual might be burning. I personally burn about 500-600 calories an hour in each of my Zumba classes. If you want an accurate reading pick up a heart rate monitor.
I would HIGHLY recommend the Polar Ft4 - its reasonably priced, reliable, accurate and super comfortable. It runs about $90 at Best Buy and is well worth the investement! OH - and the only difference between the Men's and Women's version is the color - so don't worry that there will be any other differences with the watch/monitor itself (so if you prefer the silver, get that one instead!)
Hi Kylie!! Welcome to SP!! (Please join the Zumba Instructors team, too--OK??)
I know--the calorie burn is such a hard one to figure out!! I've heard so many different estimates of what you burn in a Zumba class--but KDZ2008 is right, it's SO individual!! I got a heart rate monitor (a cheap one!! Don't go super-cheap!!! I know it's NOT accurate!!). It tells me that I burn only about 250-280 cals in an hour of Zumba!! WHAT???? I KNOW that's off- because I work HARD and SWEAT!!! My instructor wears one and say she burns about 600+ per class. (She's 5'10", leans, muscular, fitness professional--so I know her results can't compare to mine!!! Hahahahaha!!)
The only way I know what I burn is by wearing my heart rate monitor. You really can't go by what someone else burns because we are all different. What you eat, drink, how much you move and engage your muscles, how much you weigh, the medicine(s) you take and the amount of sleep you get all effect metabolism and the number of calories you burn. I burn at minimum 100 calories more when I teach a class over taking a class because my adrenaline is higher. I burn on average 500 calories but I have been as low as 380 and as high as 700. If you want a true count then get a monitor. You can also do a beginning pulse check, one in the middle and at the end and plug those numbers into an online site to get an estimate.
