I have a question and I love to chat emoticon

Do you have snacking issues and how do you deal with them?

I don't eat sweets but I love sweet and salty together so I keep trail mix with raisins, dried pineapple, pine nuts, sunflower seeds and either pretzels or those sesame things in a container but I eat alot of it emoticon

I have quite a few vegan soups I make batches of in the winter. My favorite is the black bean and sweet potato chili. I am trying to do mostly salads for lunch in the hot summer.

I don't usually chat too much but thought I would check out the question right now.

I love the SparkRecipes site and trying new recipes, I tried this one and liked it and had forgotton about it, so I'm going to get the ingredients and make it for the weekend.

Its easy to whip together and crunchy and sour and sweet all at the same time. Its called Guiltless Apple Celery Salad!

OK. It took me until today to get to the exercising and menu planning. Things just keep coming up that need taken care of (son #3 has strep throat - the wash machine is fixed and working, but now the dryer stopped heating - the repairman will be back tomorrow). But I am determined not to be discouraged. I just keep pulling out the list of goals each day and doing what I can. I am learning to be greatful for tomorrow. I am excited that I finally got some exercise in today after 9 days of being "lazy". I rode on my exercise bike for 22 minutes while listening to a book on tape. (I've been listening to Anne of Green Gables - it's nice and light hearted and uplifting). I also planned some menus the next week. I included your stir fry idea, Shelley. Thanks for the idea!

Now, let's see what else I can get accomplished on my list ....

I'm glad you have recipe ideas up here. I am determined to get back on track this week. After I exercise this morning, I hope to put together a menu plan for the week.

That sounds yummy and simple. I think I will try that this week.

My family's favorite recipe that we found on SparkRecipes is recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai

asp?recipe=83

It is easy and everyone in my family likes it. I pull out my "George Foreman" type grill and take care of the rest of the dinner preparation while the chicken cooks. By the time the kids smell dinner cooking, I have almost everything on the table.

One healthy meal that I make over & over is just a stir fry.
Chicken breast
carrots
celery
bell peppers
onions
bamboo shoots
water chestnuts

I cook the chicken in a little olive oil, then add the carrots & maybe a little water for about 5 mins. Then rest of the veggies & a little teriyaki sauce & stir fry until tender/crisp. Serve over brown rice. We use store bought sauces. I like curry, my husband doesn't. If I use a packet mix I use splenda instead of sugar if it calls for it.

Good heavens, Shelley! I certainly never thought you'd check the message boards, think, "Oh! There's a question from someone. I think I'll just not bother answering it." emoticon emoticon

A lot of the teams I'm on (OK, so I'm only on 6 or 7 teams altogether..LOL), seem to go through periods where it seems there's only 2 or 3 members left..the rest are just lurking. How one pries these lurkers out from the shadows I'm not sure. I own a Yahoo group for crafters, and one of the rules that we instituted was that people had to post at least once a month, or run the risk of being removed from the group. Some people got annoyed about it, usually those who were unsubbed for inactivity..LOL..but the rule is still in place (exceptions made on request, of course), and our group is fairly active.

Thank you Cori. I guess I didn't mean to miss a question if it was asked of me. I'll try to keep on top of that.

Susan, the other leader has been MIA since Dec. We all went MIA on her first though right before Christmas. No one did the last challenge she set up.

Well...after having spent 20 minutes or so checking out the various challenges for the past few months, I have to say...I don't see any problem with them! They're great challenges, there's good variety from week to week, and they don't require special equipment..LOL About the only suggestion I have is more of an observation. A few times I noticed someone would ask a question about the challenge, and no one answered them. For me, personally, I would find that lack of response discouraging.

We've got 46 members, and only one is doing any challenges with you?? Hmmm...since I'm as guilty as any of them, having dropped out of sight for months, I'll go check out some of the recent challenges, and see if I can offer any suggestions.

New Question: I've only got one person who's doing the challenges with me. I was wondering if there is something that I can do different to get more of you to join me? Is there a certain challenge that you would like to see? Please help!

Hi! Just joined the team & thought I would check out your weekly questions.

I hate the "resolution" season, or maybe it's just the word? ha

Nonetheless, I still managed to make myself a few promises for 2009. (the term I use for resolutions)

1) Stay on the right path toward being healthier & keep MOVING. Not to get lazy & sedentary & let the lbs creep back on.
2) Re-organize, paint & redecorate most of my house as time & finances allow.
3) Manage my finances better.

My 3 major resolutions:
1. Get healthier -- eat healthfully, lose weight, exercise regularly (the hardest one for me tooooo!)
2. Reorg my apartment (it's a mess!)
3. Stick to my financial budget and pay off my credit cards!

I have pictures from Vic Secret's swimsuit catalog from last summer on my fridge. Sadly didn't do me much good. This morning I dug out my old notebook and have spent the morning updating goals, plan, etc.

My project for today: Add motivational pictures to my notebook.

Thanks for the idea!

I have a notebook of pictures of my goal that I cut out of magazines. Realistic goals. I don't have any goals to look like anyone famous. I know I won't ever get down to a size 0 or 3.

I do indeed. I have a folder that I keep track of everything I eat and all the exercises I do. Inside I have pics of Beyonce and Fergie.

I have their bodies with my head taped on them. Looks funny but . . .

Ok ... I will admit that I have a slight desire to have Angelina Jolie's body. I don't have any pics of her ... but I do have an aweful lot of her movies.

I found it interesting that her measurements are: 36 - 27 - 36

I bet you didn't know that her waist size is larger than Marilyn Monroe(24), Mae West(26), Ava Gabor(24) and Jane Russell(25)(all of whome were considered the pinup girl of their time).

Although I will never have her height. (sigh) I'm stuck at 5' ... yep 60" ... I'm barely taller than a midget. (crying)

Do you have a picture posted ANYWHERE ... refrigerator, on your computer, in your diary, on your mirror ... of a celebrity who's body you admire and have set "getting there" as your goal?

If so ... who is it? And why?

Hobbies and pasttimes? Hmmm...crocheting, all sorts of crafts, playing with my DGS, reading, messing around on the computer, gardening, writing, watching my favourite TV shows (Bones, CSI, Numb3rs; NCIS, Criminal Minds.....)

I used to have a much more active life...don't know where it went, so I'd better get off my butt and build a new one, right? emoticon

What keeps me from quitting when I soooo want to?

Spark People is a big factor! When I get on here & share how I feel I always have someone to pick me up, kick me in the butt & get me back on track! Also, when I get compliments. When we went to my husband's Christmas party & a bunch of guys he works with all said that he's lucky to have such a beautiful wife, made me feel good. (Especially since my husband isn't the complimenting kind, it's nice to know that other people notice me. And I like my husband to know that because then he looks at me like he's proud that I'm his wife.)

When I'm ready to just say to H3LL with it all and drive head first back into a bag of unhealthy habits and even more unhealthier food -- why do they have to make it taste so good?????? -- the thing that keeps be holding on is how far I've come. How close I'm getting. The look on my daughters' face when they see me pushing myself and I see them joining in.

And my habits. Embracing the steps on the journey and focussing on them instead of the destination has made it easier.

Oh, wow. I am hereby offering my excellent services as baggage carrier. I am great at carrying luggage. I will travel with you to London in order to make sure that your baggage arrives, and stay until you come back ... with you, of course. Guarding your luggage 24/7 ... well, except, of course when I visiting all the touristy spots. (big grin)

Jamie -- I hear you, it sounds like we're in the same boat.

I'm actually in my last year (THANK GODS!) and my last official semester. Next semester I'm going to be doing an externship in London. (Color me WICKED EXCITED.)

It is strange I don't have many hobbies. I am so busy all the time that I when I actually have free time I just sit in front of the TV and try not to think about all of the things that I have to do the next day. Maybe that is what is slowing me down in this whole process, not taking anytime for myself.

Well here are the things I used to do: Read, Write poetry and short stories, hang out with my friends, paint, cross stitch, ride my motorcycle, and water ski. I still occasionally do the first one and the last two. Man, I need to get a life again. I just don't know what I can cut out now.

Well, right now, my life is law school, so my hobbies include studying, studying, working at City Hall, studying, and occasionally getting some exercise in.

In my far away life (before and after law school) I like archery, outdoor activities (hiking, camping, sailing, kayaking, etc.), video games (more towards the RPG type, rather than the smashing/shooting/dancing stuff), and crafts of all sorts (knitting, counted cross stitch, scrapbooking...except crochet. I've tried and I've tried, but I just CAN'T.) Oh, and reading. And writing. And photography. And tarot / astrology.

...I miss my real life! It's so much fun!

My hobbies are being tortured by Susan, crocheting, quilting, reading and recently one of my friends has been forcing me to scrapbook with her.

Oh and I've been (sometimes)taking crafting classes 2 weeks ago I made a mummy out of clay pots.

I LOVE to crochet. I'm trying to figure out how to make a career out of it, but most of the time, once I create something I don't want to part with it. I fall in love with it and want to keep it forever.

I really need to get over that, huh?

I also like counted cross-stitching, but haven't done that lately.

And I love to read.

My exercise routine (if I can stick to it) is:
Spinning: MWF
Couch to 5K Running Program: TTHS
Personal Training: TTHS

I've been off and on for a few weeks now, and I'm trying to get into it so I miss it when I don't. Considering I just got back from spinning -- I don't miss it yet!

I don't have a routine. I get bored real easy so I try to do something different everyday. I walk, ride my stationary bike, and work out with my WiiFit. I do try to walk everyday because I have dogs that really enjoy it. Monday (tomorrow) I'm joining a gym with my older sister.

My current exercise routine is just walk 30 minutes per day. I just ordered a Dancing With The Stars workout DVD, so I'm hoping to have some fun with my weightloss once I get it!

Well, I'm trying to re-vamp my routine. As it was no routine at all during the summer! The only exercise I got was while camping! So now, I'm trying to get in 20 mins of exercise a day. I know it's not much, but I've got to restart somewhere. I've done pretty good this week. I only did 13 mins yesterday because I wasn't feeling well & the exercising was making me dizzy. I did some 30 min days also. This week my goal is 30 mins a day. My exercise has been either strength, a walk or circuit.

hey all! this is my first post in here. My "bad" food would definitely be ice cream. it is no big thing for me to polish off a pint of Ben 'n Jerry's (I think pints are packaged that way for a reason...) My favorite "good for me" food is , roasted vegetables or vegetable lasagna. mmmmm

I like to garden, go for walks with my husband, and go hiking in the mountains. The hiking in the mountains doesn't happen very often because there aren't any mountains near where we live. The other two I get to do quite often.

My favorite can't miss television show during normal seasons: NCIS Although with last season's finale, it's going to be tough--they killed off a fav and inserted a hated and broke up my team. I didn't like it when CSI did it and I like it even less now.

My favorite network -- The FOOD Network. My fiance and I are hooked. I just wish that there was a way to get the nutritional values of the foods that they are preparing. So many things look good -- but I'm leary of trying them myself because I don't want to ruin all the progress I've made. I love the cake decorating challenges--some of them are truly works of art and should never be eaten.

My actual morning:
Either my husband's alarm clock goes off at 5:30am to go to work or he gets home at 7:15 about the time I'm getting up.
Try to get my 9 year old out of bed for school. Over & over again. It takes at least 4 "time to get up"s before she finally gets up.
Get cereal for her to eat.
Get clothes for her to pick from what she's going to wear. She won't actually pick out anything by herself!
Fight with 9 yr old because she doesn't like ANY of her pants or ANY of her socks.
Keep telling her to hurry up because something that should take 5 mins gets drug out to 30 mins.
2 year old wakes up (from the yelling)
Get 9 year old's back pack ready, yell at her from the door to hurry up it's time to go (for the umpteenth time)
Hook 2 yr old in, drive the 9 yr old 3 mins to school because she can't get herself ready early enough to ride bike & she refuses anyway (bag too heavy, excuse, excuse).
Come home feed 2 yr old, make coffee, wind down from stressful morning (unless husband is home & up, then probably have to do something for him)

DREAM MORNING
husband at work when I get up
Daughter gets up to her own alarm clock, gets herself dressed while I get her cereal.
She's ready in plenty of time & never late.
Daughter #2 gets up in a good mood.
I get to drink my coffee uninterupted.
The sun is shining & the birds are singing (oh, & no dogs are barking, lol). emoticon

My actual morning:
Fiance's alarm goes off at 4am. (growl)
I roll over and try to go back to sleep but never fail to stay awake long enough to get my "I'm-leaving-now,-honey-kiss".
Fall back asleep until alarm goes off again.
Get up, yell at kids to wake up.
Look outside and wish I was still in bed.
Shuffle out to kitchen to get me a bowl of cereal.
Eat it while checking email and checking on my team.
Listen to children fighting about what they are going to wear to school.
Listen to children arguing over who needs to look for who's missing shirt.
(growl)
Finally get laundry situation sorted out.
Wake up youngest.
Feed her.
Clothe her.
Put her in the car and drive to Amber's house for an early morning (8:30) walk before I go to work -- that's if it's Tu/We/Thu

I wish that could be my routine (minus the fighting) 7 days a week....but early working hours intrude..her schedule and mine.

I wish I was more of a morning person. I like all the late night tv shows. (frown) I know. Sacrifices should be made. But, I'm already giving up some of my favorite childhood foods ... don't make me give up my tv shows too. --yet-- Maybe someday I'll be able to .. but for how it's my escape and distraction.

Hey Kate! Welcome to the group. You are joined with my 6 year old on the leg hair issue. She keeps asking me when she can shave her legs. I keep telling her "NOT YET!" She rolls her eyes at me and tells me, "Fine. You just want me to be a hairy mammoth!" LOL

My best feature: boobs (home grown!)

My best asset: I don't know. I agree with Sally, I hate these kind of questions. I can make a list of things I hate, but not that I like. *thinking, thinking* I'm a good cook, does that count? I take good care of my husband & daughters.

The thing I hate most: My stomach. It's getting smaller but I have pregnancy skin (stretched skin) that won't go back to where it belongs!

Wow - these are tough questions.

My best feature: I guess I never gave this much thought. My husband says my eyes - they are very expressive. My hairdresser says my hair - its very thick and grows fast.

My best asset: I love math and love helping people - so I spend most of Feb - Apr being a volunteer tax preparer. I know - my husband says that is really weird, but he loves me anyway. And I love being able to help people who don't make much money take care of their tax filing so they don't have to pay someone to do it for them. I really don't think it should be so complicated or so expensive to get done - but that is a whole other subject ...

Worst physical feature: My eyes (now you're thinking she's lost it - she already said eyes for best feature). I can hardly see a thing without my glasses and sometimes that is a real pain. My sister had laser eye surgery to correct her vision, but I'm too chicken ... so I guess I'll stick with glasses or contacts.

“You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true. You may have to work for it, however.” - Richard Bach

I hate these kinds of questions.

My best . . . would be my eyes.

My best . . . would be my sense of humor.

My worst . . . would be my weight.

Ha! Kathy! I see your bump and raise you a MOLE on the tip of my nose!! There are times in my life that I actually forget it's there ... until I notice someone staring at it.

It actually fell off once. I was so happy. Not sure why it fell off or how ... just very -- then disappointed a month later when it came back.

Worst physical asset: Tough to pick just one here but I guess I'll go with my nose. I always have had a bump in my nose like a witches nose and I hate it!

My best feature: my curly hair

My best asset: my competitive streak keeps me pumping. I hate to lose (unless your talking pounds). me too susan with the competition part, my kindness is my best asset I love being as helpful as possible.

My worst asset? My pooch. I need to concentrate on my abs in the worst way. There are times I look down and think "OMG I still look pregnant!" And my baby is 2 years old.

**!** NEW QUESTION **!**

What do you consider your best asset? Both physically and mentally.

What is the one part of your body (yes you have to pick just one) that you are displeased with the most?

I log my miles daily. That way I don't have to worry about remembering for an entire week. Half the time I log it as soon as I do it, or as soon as I get home. The less I have to remember the better.

However, if it is easier for you to log them weekly then that's fine too ... just so you log them.

I am doing the challege and I think it is a fun idea. Would you rather us log our miles everyday or once a week?

Pedometers are not needed. We track by minutes as well ... 15 minutes = 1 mile unless you are a speedwalker, jogger or runner and can clear a mile faster than that and have a set known measured run that you do.

If you are unsure of the mileage you can go to www.mapmywalk.com and track it so long as it is using city streets and roads. If you use a trail in the park, the parks and rec office should have a good guestimate of the length of the trail.

I'd like to try the Route 66 challenge, but need some help figuring it out please.

I walked for 45 minutes today, but no clue how far that was as I don't have a pedometer.

I'm doing the Route 66 challenge with you guys. I made it up to five "miles" twice last week, but I'm finding that to be a little much for me right now. About 15 or 20 years ago it would have been simple for me - I had no idea I had gotten that out of shape. But I am not giving up. I will do five "miles" on the days I can - and do what I can the other days. I am hoping that by the end of the month it will be easier. This week I will try Susan's idea of little 15 minute walks whenever I can and get this body used to moving again.

Ok, I have to catch up. As for the music, I usually work out to a dvd, or circuit train while watching tv, when I go for walks I have my girls with me so I don't listen to music. But if I had the chance, I would listen to BLACK EYED PEAS, FERGIE, KELLY CLARKSON, DAUGHTRY, HINDER

And yes I joined the walking challenge. I finally got 5 miles in yesterday and plan on doing the same (or more if I feel better) today.
