Last night was pretty awesome! I bowled a 111, 120, and 119 - with my cheap-o plastic ball!! (But I did order a new resin ball.)

I got it in my head not to concentrate TOO hard - and I relaxed a little - and threw a lot of consistent balls!

And finally, my new shoes are WAY more comfy!!!

I get my balls redrilled because I am CHEAP! Oh, and because my hands and fingers have shrunk as I've dropped over 80 pounds in the past year, so it was very much needed.

Darn it! Didn't get the ball ordered as planned. Oh well. It will be this week - probably on my only day off (Monday).

I need to work on consistency in throwing my (straight) ball, too, before I get up to throwing a hook! But I didn't know you could just get your old ball redrilled - is that to make it hook? Or the fingertip thing? I thought as you got better, you got balls that were weighted differently (inside).

Sometimes I think I concentrate TOO hard on the whole "suitcase" thing about holding/throwing my ball - and it's GUTTER BALL!! I think I will have one of my teammates "video tape" me with my iphone for a few throws, and see what I'm doing wrong (or maybe right)!

I did get my new shoes today - Thanks to Amazon! Our local pro shops are pretty small, and would have to be ordered thru a catalog anyway, so I shopped around online and found some cute black and hot pink ones for $47! Looking good is half the battle, right?

The whole "curve" (or hook) thing is a bit of a metamorphosis. I remember back in 4th grade (and that was just a few years ago!) watching one of my classmates throw a hook, and given how bad I was at throwing a straight ball, I decided I would figure it out! It was not long after that I got my own ball with a "semi" finger tip, then progressed to a full finger tip ball, and have never looked back (and in all seriousness, that was 45 years ago!).

Work with your pro shop, but don't be afraid to get a ball drilled one way and then have it changed. Both of my current bowling balls have been plugged and redrilled and there is nothing wrong with that!

emoticon on the new bowling ball, Andi! I'm grateful to have a 103 average! LOL!
I'm new at all this, but I'm having lots of fun. My ball is not plastic, but it is not the "curving" kind either. I still haven't become consistant at throwing the ball in a straight line, much less a curve! C'est La Vie!

Thanks, Cat! Never thought of that!

I'm going to order a new ball today. I'm pretty excited to get a decent ball!! Still gonna be a "straight" ball, as I'm not up to "hooks" and all that yet!

Welcome.
Don't be surprised that your ball holes get too big as you lose weight. A good problem to have.

emoticon, Andi, it's nice having you join us. You made a wise decision to get bowling balls drilled for you rather than using house balls. As for your average, we have members covering the range from beginners to skilled so don't be shy keeping us updated on your scores and any problems or questions you have and we'll try to help you correct those problems and answer those questions. Have fun and stay in touch. emoticon -- Lou

Hi, I'm Andi and new to this team, but not to SP!

I've been an on-again, off-again Sparker, but on again for the past 3 weeks. And due to a schedule change at work, I finally have time for league bowling again!! It's been probably 5 years, and 3 surgeries since the last time I league bowled!

My average when I left was about 112 - not great, but a good handicap! I bowled a couple of days ago with my old Mickey Mouse "Viz-a-ball" - which beats a house ball in that it at least fits my hand/fingers, so no soreness. But my "good" ball must have sat next to the heater vent too long - and cracked all the way around! There goes $100!! emoticon

Ordered new shoes (cute black and pink ones!) today and a new ball on Friday...

emoticon

I'm hoping to learn how to improve my game and get some inspiration and motivation from this team!!

emoticon! Always nice meeting another bowler. One of our newer teammates, Leah (CATHOLICCORGI), has started bowling with her husband, too. It's exciting following her progress as it will be following yours, such as your new high game emoticon

One good site that offers free articles and videos on bowling, for new to skilled levels, is www.bowlingball.com. That one and www.bowl.com will be nice starting places for you to learn more about our sport.

And we're here to help guide you along with navigating the SparkPeople site or answering your questions about bowling. So don't be shy asking. Looking forward to getting to know you and to seeing that high game climb even higher. -- Lou

Welcome.
It's not your average that makes you a good bowler - one doesn't need to have a 200 ++ average to be 'good'. Consistency is the key in my opinion. Just as it is in losing weight and getting healthy. Pay attention to the details and you will be 'good'.

Hello all -

I'm new to the spark team and bowling as a sport. I love bowling and I'd like to become better and more consistent. Bowling is something that I've always done, but I've never really paid attention to it before. It was just a way to hang out. But now that I'm trying to be more active, bowling has become a great way for me to exercise with my husband.

I purchased my own ball and shoes this past June. It's great having a ball that fits my hand! Plus, I don't have to worry about other people's germs. :) I just hit my high score on labor day - 139. As you can see, I have a lot to learn!
