I have recommitted to the FB diet and am on Day 3 of the jumpstart. I've lost 1.6 lbs already! I had gained 5 and only have 9 or 10 pounds to lose so it goes slowly. Enjoying it so far. I'm sensitive to wheat, so I have the FB gluten free cookbook. It looks good.

I use about 25% coconut oil. Get the refined if you don't care for a coconut taste. I add salt--enhances the chocolate flavor; experiment for yourself. Salty chocolate keeps me from wanting potato chips, or from dousing my rice/millet with salt, and such. I add enough plain cocoa powder--not the Dutch style or anything else--to make a stiff paste. Usually, I do not add sweetener.

This can be molded, or dropped into large chocolate-chip style pieces, or patted into a sheet and cut when cold. I usually just stir a small, or more, amount together, wait a few minutes for the flavors to meld, and eat it.

On the diet you can eat chocolate that is at least 85% Cacao. Dark Chocolate. If you don't like dark chocolate this will not help. The higher the Cacao amount the lower the Sugar amount. I have found a Ghirardelli chocolates around 86% that I like. I tried a Lindt Chocolate at 85% and 99%, that I did not enjoy as much. So you will need to try a few to see what you enjoy. Most of the 85% or higher chocolates are in their own sections of the candy isle or in speciality stores. It can be pricey.

Just found a coupon that you can print on your computer for some Ghirardelli dark chocolate. http://ghirardelli.com/ look for the "Lose yourself in the dark" on the front page. You are not restricted to only one coupon but the expiration date is one month from printing coupon at the moment. Not sure how long it will be offered.

I didn't find this diet until Aug. but I love it! You lose more inches then lbs. I've losed 5 inches off of my stomach.....down to the last hole in my belt! And I feel really good! I now need a belt to hold my jeans up!
I did start in March by dieting and walking....losted 19 lbs....for the season, summer, and fall.....would like to lose 1 lb. more to make it an even 20 lbs.

I can eat dark chocolate, sun flower kennels, pumpkin kennels, almonds, walnuts, lemon extra virgin olive oil, for dipping bread into! Uhm! Uhm! Uhm!

Be sure to drink your water also!

Let me know what you think???

Hey Donna!

Are you losing weight on this plan? I'm finding it's taking me forever to lose a pound! Probably because I'm menopausal. I did lose a couple pounds at most on the jumpstart, but that was it.

I Love this diet! It is the easiest diet I ever have been on!

I started it in Aug.....when my daughter told me about the Sassy Water....cause I had so many cucumbers from our garden, we grow our own mint leaves, I bought the ginger root, and used lemon juice!

I fond the pocket guide book at Target for $6.39..... and also bought the larger book, but I think you only need the pocket guide!

I love putting the chocola chips on my oatmeal, and pancakes when we go to a ret out in the mornings!

I'm so glad Bear-gurl told me about this team! Now I have some to talk to about it!

Hey!

I'm out here too! I'm just finishing my 4th day of the jumpstart today. I, too, have noticed a difference. I haven't lost much weight, only about 2 pounds as of this morning, but I'll take anything. I'm a runner, but didn't rung throughout this jumpstart phase, and I'm glad I didn't, since I woke up with wobbly legs from eating only about 1200 calories; not enough to support a 3-5 mile run. There were points at which I felt like I could chew my own arm off, but by that time, it was time for a meal. The meals are bland, but it's only for 4 days. I plan to start the rest of the 28 day thing tomorrow, but I'm modifying it some, since I don't think I'll lose fast enough on 1600 calories a day. I may bring it down to about 1450 or so. I'm also menopausal, which compromises the rate of weight loss, I think. Please keep posting! It does get lonely out here, very unusual for a spark people blog not to have very many, or recent posts.

I just finished the four day plan and I understand what you mean about the tomatoes! I like tomatoes but when I was eating the pint I thought it would never end. I got creative the second time they were on the plan. I sprinkled them with a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar and tore up some fresh basil. Then I shredded my cheese stick (I used mozzarella) into it. It's like a tomato mozzarella salad! Very popular in Italy! ;) My spice cabinet surely got a workout over the last four days.

By the way, from the four days I lost 10.2 pounds and 4 inches off my waist.

Musicbeerman,

I do remember reading that you can substitute things that are on the 4 day plan. So if you hate tomatoes, try the steamed carrots instead. This is day 2 for me. So far, so good. I like the grape tomatoes, but my husband looked at me like I was crazy when I tried to make him eat a whole pint of them...

Ok...I started the four day jump-start this morning...the sunflower seeds(1/4 cup) were hard to gag down. I mixed them with the applesauce to get them in. I hate tomatoes and am not looking forward to the pint of grape tomatoes at lunch...not sure how to get by those! I am really scared and nervous about the things on the menu that I really don't care for...are there substitutes? Trying to do it right.

Hi Everyone, I am not new to SP, but new to the Flat Belly Diet. I have the book, and my husband would like to do this with me, but I can't seem to find any free info on the version for men. Does anyone know the calorie or food differences for men, and what the heck is the fire water made of? He's drinking sassy water with me and eating what I eat, but I'm sure that won't be enough...

Me and my friend split the costs in away. She bought the regular cookbook and I got the family cookbook and we are going to share. I just rented the main book at the library and am loving the cookbooks. So far I have tried the lemon cupcakes, and the zucchini snack cakes.

Thanks so much for this information. I have located the book on Kalahari (South African version of Amazon) but it will be a while before it gets here. I'm still trying to get my head around eating all my favorite foods which I'd given up to cut fat grams.

Action and persistence: those are the keys.

Hi Elaine, Sassy water is 2 litres water, 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger, medium cucumber peeled and thinly sliced, 1 medium lemon thinly sliced and 6 mint leaves. Put the whole lot into a jug and leave overnight, drink during the next day. Do this for 4 days and it will clear anything that is trapped inthe GI tract and clear out bloat things. At the same time you are meant to be doing a diet of 3 meals and one snack amounting to 300 each.

I am very new to the MUFA diet...the 4 Day Jump Start is what?? What is the Sassy water? Is regular water okay to drink? I like plain water better than trying to disguise it so I hope it is. I guess it is all in the book...but I will try and gather information as I look around here. I know I am in good company here as everyone talks about getting a FLAT BELLY emoticonemoticon I need to start now!!!

I did the 4 day Jump Start. There was no noticable pounds lost, nor inches. I am trying the Flat Belly Diet now. I don't have a book yet, but I gathered enough information from this site and Prevention, that I have found enough to eat. I do hope it works for me. If I lose some inches from my belly, I will be very happy.

I am on my third day on the 4 day plan. So far, I have only lost 1 pound. However, I take a diuretic every day, so I don't think I am bloated. I have done everything by the book. If I lose inches, that will make me happier than losing pounds. I don't have any water pounds to lose. I like the diet and even the taste of the sassy water.

I'm on day four of the anti-bloat and nearly every night I wasn't sure I could do it, I haven't strayed farther than a few sunflower seeds and some tic-tacs. By last night, with one day left I knew I could do it. I might have one glass of red wine tonight but I think of it as celebrating the end. I have lost 5.2 as of this morning. I have grown to like the sassy water and think I will do some variation off and on! I'm definitely in a better habit now of drinking more (I always thought I drank enough water, likely not). I think I have a better general sense of well-being--I have had one cup of coffee in the mornings, less than usual. I feel good, and it will be easy to move to the 32 day plan!!! Every night you have to remember it's just the four days and how upset you'll be if you don't push it and see your results!!emoticon

Good luck to both of you- Elaine and Hopefulhippo.

Elaine, every time your thoughts begin to go there...say out loud (if you can), "stop" and then tell yourself that you can do this. Eventually, with consistency in doing this, the negative thoughts will stop or lessen a great deal. This has worked for me....along with listening to motivational cds or reading positive things. I keep post its or printed positive material where I can see it. Such as on my fridge, in my car, on my desk. Hope this helps. Also, both of you come over to the daily chat and we can support one another.

I am on my 2nd day of the 4 day Anti Bloat. I am not following it to a tee, like I had some fresh Avocado and salsa with my Tuna fish for lunch. But omg it was so good.I am trying to be aware of how I am feeling and I can tell that my feelings are thinking " you'll never last, you wont be able to do this, you will always be fat, why are you trying again" A common theme in my mind.I dont want to feel this way anymore.I want to feel empowered and feel that I know that this is very important for my health and spiritual growth. And really believe it and really want it!I want to look cute on our motorcycle this "Flood Run" in May.And I want to look Fantastic at my nieces wedding in September 2010.I love Mufa's

I bought the pocket guide from amazon.com

Anne, I track my mufas on here at the nutritional page. You can add monounsaturated fats to the list that you are tracking. If you add foods that you eat to your favorites, then they will be handy in the future when you eat that item. Also, if you throw away a wrapper before getting the info from it, you might could google the item to find the info. Hope this helps.

where do you get the pocket guide ?

We all get heavier as we get older because theres a lot more information in our heads. So I'm not fat, I'm just really intelligent and my head couldn't hold anymore so it started filling up the rest of me.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it..

What's the easiest way to track MUFAs on here?? Does it go under a goal, or in the nutrition section, the meal planner...

I havn't been using the meal planner because it's not food I have on hand - right now, I'm tracking what I actually eat. And it's a pain in the neck too - yesterday I bought a package of chocolate covered pumpkin seeds to eat instead of a chocolate muffin. I threw the package away so no idea how to track it.

Any help making this easier is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Thanks for the "rules made simple." Since my diet already includes a lot of MUFAs, I am thinking the Flat Belly Diet might be a good fit for me.

Hey, I'm Hannah and I saw on the show The Doctors about the Flat Belly Diet. The author was on the show and I didn't get to hear everything that was being said but since my biggest problem is my belly fat. I JUST HAD TO FIND OUT MORE. So, I looked it up and I just got done ordering the book can't wait to get it and start this new way of eating. I really don't like that word "die"t. Once, I get my book I'm going to start it. YIPPY!!!!

I got the book and the cookbook through a book club. Have not had a chance to dig into the cook book yet as I am still learning what I am supposed to eat. Just flipping through it however looks to have lots of recipes that are simple to fix and sound really tasty. Great pictures too!
I am very excited about this and even though I just started I can sense that this will work just becaue of the satisfaction level with the added fats.

The info that y'all have posted is very helpful. I'm sure I'll eventually buy the guide, but for now it gets me started. I was including MUFAs, but not nearly enough, like 1 tsp of flaxseed oil instead of a tblsp. Old habits die hard.
Thanks!

P.S. I ordered the guide for $7.53 (including shipping) on Half.com

This is really helpful from the fbd pocket guide:

If your chosen mufa is oil, nuts, or seeds, pair the serving with the following:
3oz lean protein
1/2 cup cooked whole grain, such as brown or wild rice, or 1 whole grain bread serving, such as half of a whole wheat pita or 1 cup of fruit
2 cups raw or steamed veggies
example: 3 oz grilled salmon served w/ 1/2 cup whole wheat couscous mixed w/ 2 tbsp toasted pine nuts. Serve w/ 2 cups steamed mixed veggies.

If your mufa of choice is avocado or olives, pair the appropriate serving with:
3 oz lean protein or 2 oz lean protein and 1 dairy, such as 1 slice cheese or 1/4 cup shredded or crumbled cheese
2 cups raw or steamed veggies
1 cup starchy veggies, such as beans, corn, peas or potatoes or 1/2 c. cooked whole grain or 1 whole grain bread serving, such as half pita or 1 slice whole grain bread
example: 1 slice toasted whole grain bread topped w/1/4 c. sliced avocado and 3 oz roasted chicken. Serve with 2 cups steamed broccoli w/ a spritz of lemon.

If your chosen mufa is dark chocolate, such as 1/4 cup semi-sweet or dark choc chips, pair it with:
1 cup fruit
1 cup dairy, such as FF cottage cheese, or FF plain yogurt, or 6 oz FF flavored yogurt or 1 cup whole grain, such as oatmeal or 2 whole grain waffles
example: Melt 1/4 c. semisweet or dark choc chips and drizzle over 1 cup sliced strawberries. Serve w/ 1 cup FF plain yogurt.

This was really helpful info for me and hope that it is for you as well. I realize these aren't the only possibilities, but it gave me ideas for healthy meals. Also, fbd recommends limiting saturated fats to 3-4 grams per 400 calorie meal.

I've been keeping my calories around 1,500 and find I get better results.

Also, the pocket guide is great. I bought it off someone on eBay. You could easily use that and not have the main book.

I had never heard of the FBD, but the funny thing is, before joining SP, I tried to eat healthily and added walnuts in my salads, I had a serving of walnuts almost every day, and I found my belly flattened.
Since I started tracking my food on SP I have omitted walnuts because of their high calorie and fat count. Even though I have lost more weight, my belly is bloated again, and I was wondering why. Now I know! From today I'm introducing walnuts in my diet again, even if I go over my daily allowed fat grams. I'd rather have a flat tummy/belly emoticon

The 1600 was set by Prevention as the maintenance level for most women and the diet is set at that level so that once you get to your ideal weight you will not yo-yo the way you do when coming off most diets.

The proportions and serving sizes are from the FBD pocket guide. I would think they are in the book as well, but I don't have the book. You can also sign up at their online site.

I can't tell you why it works, but it does. I do not feel like I'm on a diet at all, and I'm losing weight.... but I'm also eating a ton of raw vegetables with my MUFA's. I would guess that it depends on what else you eat with the MUFA.

I am a proponent of eating raw fruits and vegetables. The fiber and water content of those could also be a major factor in my weight loss. The MUFA's just make dieting easy.

hope this helps...

I use the fbd for food ideas, yet I still try to stay within the SP guidelines for carbs, protein, fats, calcium etc. If I am lower than they suggest on protein, then I make myself a protein shake/smoothie and fit into my calorie range. I hope this helps or that someone else can answer your question:)

Hi, I ordered the pocket guide as a used book from Amazon. I did not order the diet book or the recipe book. I was hoping to get by using the info at Prevention's website, plus, I think the pocket guide is the "diet in a nutshell." (pun intended, ha-ha)

And there is a 4 week meal plan in it if you like to do that.

I still don't have my book from the library but am trying to follow-at least I'm attempting to add MUFAs to each meal. I just bought semi-sweet chips, more olives, almonds and sesame seeds. YUMMY!!! I do hope that I can incorporate this into my 'forever' diet plan to stay healthy and enjoy these things w/out guilt!! Anne

FLAT BELLY & MUFA rules made simple
1. 1600 cal/day, with following calorie balance: about 35% fats, the majority of which should be MUFA, 45% complex carbs, and 20% lean proteins.
2. About 400 cal/meal. Choose your MUFA first and build your meal from there using lean protein, complex carbs, low fat dairy, fruit and vegetables.
3. Reduce saturated fats and eliminate trans fats.

MUFA Serving sizes in the Flat Belly Diet. You can look up the calories on the Nutrition tracker or online.

ONE TABLESPOON is the serving size for OILS:
canola oil, flaxseed oil (cold pressed organic,) olive oil, peanut oil, pesto sauce, safflower oil (high oleic,) sesame or soybean oil, sunflower oil (high oleic,) walnut oil

TWO TABLESPOONS is the serving size for NUTS, LEGUMES & SEEDS:
almonds, almond butter, brazil nuts, cashews, cashew butter, endamame (soybeans) shelled & boiled, hazelnuts, macadamia, peanuts, natural peanut butter, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sunflower seed butter, tahini (sesame seed paste)and walnuts

OTHERS: 1/4 cup is the serving size for avocados, 2TBS for olive tapenade, 10 Large olives, 1/4 cup semisweet or dark chocolate chips
