Telling someone they can't is just rediculous. I believe that we can relearn to use our creative side and if something doesn't work we just try something else. Talent is really nothing more than hard work. I am so glad you joined us.

I joined this team a couple weeks ago and I'm hoping to get back into painting. Guess I got a bit frustrated a few years ago when I couldn't get a color right and gave up. I tried for 4 weeks (once a week for a few hours, not all the time) to get the color and never made it. I mainly have painted dogs and horses and landscapes. The horse I was working on was my first try at drawing using a graph method because I can't get the right sizes when I am trying freehand. I also was doing photography and use that for reference to paint.

Other things that I like to do are some jewelry, crochet, glass engraving and stained glass (though that has been a while, too) and leatherwork. I am likely to try most any craft given a chance. I have been told I can't draw or paint by many people, but have had a few instructors that say I can do pretty well. I just need my references to look at. I am hoping to get more inspiration by being on this team.

Darlene

I have been painting and drawing since I was 9 years old. I am 55 now. My parents noticed I liked to draw so they purchased me an oil paint by number set when I was 9 and I was hooked on oil colors after that. I Hav'nt painted on canvas for years...I do miss it though!
In the year 2003 I began painting miniature resin horses sculptures using oil colors. When the economy hit bottom in 2009 I returned to the construction industry to work with my husband. We had to travel to find work and did so, and still are, working the eastern part of the US.
I plan to pick my paintbrushes back up when I retire.
I have been an emotional eater for years and did not make the connection: why I was "stuffing" my emotions and feelings down with junk food until a few months back. I never even knew I was binge eating.
I'm still looking for the answer to why and when I began to eat emotionally...clearly I am looking for comfort. Clearly I need a change.
I've lost 70'or more pounds three times over the past 25 years...once I lost 100 pounds. It took me a year but I did it...but it did not last. I remember the first thing I did when I reached my goal weight...I went to the store, purchased a six pack of Snickers candy bars and ate the whole six bars. That's just plum sad...I fixed my outer self but my inner self was still hurting.
Well that's pretty much it...I'm here to work and fix the inner me...with my being in my mid 50s I know now if I don't fix inner me now my body won't hold up. It's not going to be good.
I am thrilled to have found the SparkPeople group 8 days ago!
Cheers!

Hi I'm Barbara, I'm 46 and married with 4 sons. I have been drawing on and off all my life. I started when I was very young, my mother taught me to draw. When I was a teenager I loved tracing comic books until I could draw them on my own. I started with pencil but found that it would wear away and smudge and wanted it to be permanent, so started drawing in pencil and would trace over it with ball point pens. After a couple of drawings this way I found it frustrating because after I was done and the ink dried I would have to go over and erase the pencil marks. This was no good for me neither, so I gradually got the confidence to go ahead and draw all my drawings on solely ink, incorporating mistakes into the drawing as I went, the end result was a lot better and I was happier with it.

I was stationed in Iceland for 1 1/2 years where I learned how to pour pottery. It made my leisure time pass more quickly, making molds, painting, glazing and finally firing pieces. But once I transferred off base it was hard to find another art studio which offered the opportunity to do pottery. All the places I have found, the pieces are already done and they just want you to paint them, it just isn't as satisfying to me.

This year I started doing paint by number kits to slowly get into colors. All of my works in the past have been in pencil or in black ink. I found it extremely hard to control the brush and got frustrated. So, I'm back doing inks again. I just recently bought a set of colored ink pens and can't wait to use them. Just got to decide what to draw with them emoticon

I have framed some of my inks and entered them in a local art show for others to see. But mostly my collection is private and I do not sell my pieces. I'm keeping them for my children.

Change your mind, change your world!

hello :) I have been snooping on this group for a while but now I suppose its time for me to introduce myself. i'm Allison, im 26, and I mostly draw and paint but I dabble in all sorts of things here and there. I have painted with acrylics and watercolor and currently I am learning oil painting. I am a self taught artist and I will be honest I have no idea how to describe my artwork ha ha. I have so far only managed to get into one art show at a local gallery but i'm hoping I will be able to do another show soon. i'm also interested in meeting new artist friends in the Duluth/Cloquet MN area. don't be shy, i love making friends :)

Hmmm.. Looks like I didn't take the time to do this properly. I'm new to the team. I'm a mom and a teacher - currently working as a substitute teacher. I have two daughters. One is 20. One is 9. Young one and I live in Red Bluff, CA full time. Hubby works in Sacramento area (approx. 160 miles away) so he stays down there with the 20 year old during the week. We see him most (can't afford the gas for "all") weekends.

As a Sparker, I have lost the weight and kept it off for a long while, then let grad school and too many deaths of loved ones get to me and let it creep back on. I don't eat more when I'm stressed. I don't do the emotional eating thing. Problem is I just don't ANYTHING when I'm stressed. I don't watch what I'm eating. I don't exercise. I get sedentary.

As an artist, I work in a couple of media almost exclusively. Watercolors and ink. I love to dabble but I don't learn new media easily without physically being taught so, until I have $ for a workshop or a class, I am where I am. Some of my work is in my photo gallery on my spark page. I do mostly representational stuff, the vast majority being animals. In recent years I have been able to stretch beyond my obsessive realism into some more abstracted stuff thanks to my daughter's attempts at art. She would try to mimic my realistic style and get upset when her inexperienced hand didn't make it as real. No amount of "I've had 30 years more practice.." talk would fix it. Finding styles we could do that had a less clear desired outcome? That worked....and stretched me into a new looseness that I needed. When I get too loose or stuck in a rut with my subject matter, I do zentangles to snap me out of it.

Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win.
-Jonathan Kozol

Colored pencil artist. -now anyway used to do photography and graphic design
Had 4 kids in 5.5 years and that field has all pretty much gone digital. I do intend to use the computer when I get more fluent with the colored pencils.
I like illustration.
Homeschooled kids- one K-12
2 until high school and one until her junior year.
I have 3 of them at home -one in college. One is attending a college prep school on a scholarship and one is going to community college. The eldest is back home- he works and also does all kinds of wonderful things

They are ages 22,20,18 and 17.

I have 50 pounds to lose.
Oh yes I have a DH- married 23 years now.

I'm back again. Less weight to lose this time, but a lot less time to accomplish it as well. My artistic endeavors are sketching and painting, refurbishing old furniture, and also acting and improv, and producing and writing. I also work full time doing NONE of those things. I need a lot of support and motivation to get up and MOVE.

This is a wonderful time to become the full blown creative you were always meant to be. Welcome to our team! I have always thought of myself as an artist and a friend advised me that a real artist creates because they have to. It could be any medium but the fact is artists DO art.

Hi all,
I've just joined and hope to get inspiration and eventually GIVE it as well. Like somebody on your team said, I'm more of a collector of art supplies than an artist. I've always defined myself as an artist despite very little effort. I'm hoping I have time to catch up (I've recently hit 72 years), with less magical thinking and more practical "sit down and do something!!!!" thinking.
Have a great day!

I am back on Spark People. I would really like to be active in this group. I am an artist, more than an athlete, and art provides a solace that I need. A good brisk walk inspires the desire to paint, both of which I have neglected lately, so here I am, looking for support for both. :)

Hi! I am a former teacher. Now I am an artist and arts education volunteer. Actually, losing weight after teaching is my first priority right now! After the holidays, I need to get back to a schedule to stay motivated and productive in my home art studio.

I have a Facebook art page where you can follow my work!
Just type in Natasha Witt Paintings and Sketches (with no spaces) on Facebook.

Hi again. I tried to access your page but when I did a search it said there were no results. Often when you run your mouse over your name it'll open a window with a link to the sparkpage but that didn't work either. I'll have to remember your name and try again later.

welcome to the team. I'll go to your sparkpage and look at your painting. I have some of mine in my photos on my sparkpage as well. I too am self taught and have been painting with acryllics for about 7 years. Like you, I have multiple health issues that make losing weight difficult. I think you'll find a lot of support and helpful information here on SparkPeople. Good luck on your journey.

Hi fellow artists!! This is awesome to join a group that has art in common as well as our weight issues. I am a budding artist, only been painting with acrylics for 6 years. No training at all, but already have sold two paintings on commission. I also have paintings hanging in a local gallery. I paint for pure enjoyment. On my spark page I put one of my paintings in the background if anyone wants to take a look. MY weight issues are so complicated. I have many health issues that make it difficult to lose weight, but I am hoping that belonging to sparkpeople I can find inspiration and friends that can help me and I can help them and together lose some weight. I am a chatter box too, can you tell? lol So nice to be here, hope to make many new friends!! Cheers everyone emoticon

Welcome to the team. Interesting problem. I seem to forget food when working in my studio except when my husband joins me. Then I lose concentration and get a little frustrated. I am a stress eater for sure.

I'm so curious about Etsy. Have any of you actually sold anything on it? I have a site on Fine Art America but I'm really discouraged. Seems the only folks that look at my work are also selling on the site. Just looky loos.

HRH - interesting problem - I often find that working on my art takes away my angst and cravings for food and I even have to be reminded sometimes that it is meal time, lol. I tend to eat more when emotional - worried, scared, depressed, (some perverted part of my brain convinces me that the food will replace whatever used to make me happy and inevitably, part way through the binge or treat, I feel worse than ever and regret giving in to the cravings) and even happy (celebrate or treat myself). Sparkpeople for me is all about a change in lifestyle and as you begin your personal journey, I wish you luck. For me, it's a long hard road, and I think for many of us. There is no quick fix for habits developed over a lifetime and when you set your goals, remember that and don't shoot for the moon. Set a reasonable and attainable goal and once that is achieved, set a new one until you reach your ultimate goal. Best of luck and looking forward to getting to know you better.

Hi there, I am a artist from Santa Cruz, CA. I work in drawing, painting (oils) and pastel. I also hand paint small gift items and make jewelry (boxes, etc) for my ETSY shop.

Being an artist has a lot of challenges to losing weight. For me a big one is what I call the "jump in jitters". It is an angsty feeling I get before I dive into a project or piece. I often find myself walking back and forth from the studio to the kitchen and looking for food to take the edge off of the angst. The only thing that really takes care of the angst is just jumping in. It's an interesting thing though how food and the creative cycle work with each other.

I also have a number of health issues and disability that contributed to weight gain taht I am trying to get a handle on.

I am so happy to find some artists that are on this site and are working to get to their goals.

Hi Rebecca. I'm Lin from Peterborough, Ontario Canada. I'm retired but have a number of chronic illnesses. During recovery from one, I took up painting and have been teaching myself. I love doing pet portraits - I call them petraits - they don't always turn out but a lot do, lol. I also enjoy doing landscapes and some decorative painting.

Nice to meet you. I don't see much action in this forum but maybe as we get more members. I paint with acrylics.

Hi there! Found this forum and am so happy to introduce myself! I have always been an artist, the gift being handed down generationally from mother to daughter. My daughters are also artists. I am particularly fond of pen and ink and pencil sketching, but love to work in 3-D with diorama and scrap booking techniques as well.

I have changed so much in the last few years, sometimes I forget that there IS an artist inside of me! Every once in a while she peeks her head out, but I'd love to give her full welcome to come back out and create!

Am living in the Northeast USA with my youngest daughter and my fiance'. We live in a little historical town with walkways to everywhere and great green trees and lots of community activities, including artist groups. This is an inspiration to pick up my life in an area I'd pretty much forgotten about.

Looking forward to the journey along with the rest of you.

Hello, new here. I dabble in almost every medium but what I do the most is: paper art dioramas, photography, sewing, and drawing. When I was in art school I did a lot of watercolor and various forms of printmaking and would love to get back into both.

Looking forward to interacting with other artists on their journey to or maintaining their health!

Welcome. I was just reading an excellent welcome message posted on a couple of different SparkTeam pages by BlueRose73. One I remember for sure is in the Calling All Canadians Team under Introduce Yourself and Hey Everybody. Go over and give it a good read. She has some excellent suggestions and links for beginners to the Site.

Hi. I just joined the Team, and have been on Sparkpeople since yesterday. Right now, I'm tracking my meals, so I can see what's helping me be healthier and change what isn't helping.
I've been wanting to get in shape since I was in middle school, but haven't had lasting sucess.
Not this time, though. I've had enough with struggling.
I live in the Central Texas area.
I seen older relatives deal with weight issues and serious health problems. I don't want that to be me. I also want to fit and strong and enjoy life.
I been drawing ever since I can remember. I've done people primarliy, but also like animals. Horses and cats are my favorite to do. I've been interested in Japanese Manga as something new to try. I also like making my own jewelry. I'm still a beginner, for now.
I'm really excited to be here.

Hi - I just joined the Team. I've been on SparkPeople for a couple of months now and I'm still learning and finding different things - like this Team.

I have always been overweight - except for all those times I lost weight only to regain it plus more.

I live in Peterborough, On. Canada. I'm married, for the second time, to a wonderful man. I have a daughter from my first marriage and we have a 5 year old grandson who I babysit most Mons and Fris in the summer and also on non-school days.

I became too ill to continue working in 2004 and took early retirement. I've since developed a number of chronic medical issues in addition to the Crohn's Disease I was born with. (Heart, Diabetes, sleep disorders, arthritis, etc.) As I started to recover somewhat, I took a One Stroke Painting class in 2005 and fell in love with painting. I seldom do One Stroke however I do use some of the techniques. I do some sketching but my love is for acrylics. I like doing landscapes and pet portraits as well as decorative art. I've painted on canvas, wood, paper, stone, cloth, metal, wax, plastic, glass, and ceramics. I have a website that displays some of my work. The web address is part of my signature below.

I'm looking forward to participating in the topics in this forum and in making new friends also determined to lose weight, keep it off, and live a healthier lifestyle.

Hello fellow artists, I'm glad to have found you all:) I am also at the heaviest I have ever been, probably because I dieted. They say..you lose weight on diets only to gain it back and more. Well I'm living proof. This time I plan on changing my eating habits for a life time and add a regular "play time" to my days. I love to dance and bike and hike so they will be my "exercise" I enjoy painting with oils and acrylics and pastels. drawing with pen and ink and charcoal. I have painted, plein air , murals, illustrations for children's books. and chalk talks I have decided to start a body of work that included still life's. Well, I've been in a two year slump but am getting out of it and hope to start making a living at this. You all know how hard that is...but nothing ventured nothing gained. Have a great weekend.

To live = risk

Hello. I am on the home stretch of my weight loss (finally seem to have gotten past the plateau, knock on wood... I probably shouldn't have said that!)

Art: stained glass, graphic design, photography, writing.

Plan on working with: tile, acrylic, watercolor, decorative (and functional) woodworking, lithographs, sketches.

Got rid of the ticker cuz my scale decided to flatter me unduly. I haven't re-gained, just got a better, honest, scale.

Just because you steam it, doesn't mean you can't add herbs and spices. (A gripe at those insipid restaurant "healthy choice" menu selections.)

Hi everyone, I'm Jewel (really I'm Christy but couldn't get the name and didn't want all the #'s after it LOL) and I have been in a long time roller coaster ride with my weight. Currently, I am the heaviest that I have ever been and am determined that the numbers on that evil scale will no longer rise up! I am in love with the art of chainmaille and consider myself a budding maille artist. Over the years I have dabbled in acrylics, indian ink, pencil sketch, beaded jewelry... and have at last found my perfect creative mate: Maille.

Looking forward to being part of this team!

thanks kats, I hope your shoulder is okay now. for months I couldn't do anything with my right hand and I am right handed, so it was difficult. It wasn't just painting I couldn't do. I couldn't eat, write, type or do anything with my right hand. So it is such a relief to be able to do everything again. But my greatest joy is being able to paint again. I posted a couple of my new paintings on my spark page. What kind of art do you do?

hi my name is Dotti and I am an artist. I have been a member of sparkpeople and this team for several years but have not been using the site for many months. I was lucky enough to meet my first goal of getting down to l50 lbs. by my scales I was actually 142, My NY scales, and right now I am 148 lbs. on my florida scales. I know neither of my scales are right, so I am not sure just where I am at the moment. After first reaching 150, I set a new goal but have not lost any more weight. In fact I think I have gained a few pounds back so it is time to get back to work.

the last few months have been very difficult for me. I had just about given up painting because of arthritis in my right shoulder. I was in constant pain and could no longer paint on an easel, I had to paint holding my canvas in my lap and turning it every which way to reach where I was painting. On July 17th 2012 I had a complete shoulder replacement that didn't go very well. There were many complications. Because my bones were much thinner then anticipated, the bone in my arm was broken twice during the surgery and caused a nerve to be stretched. As a result in addition to the shoulder replacement I had to have two metal plates to stabilize my arm and I could not lift my wrist or my fingers or move my thumb because of the stretched nerve. I went through the first six weeks with my arm in a brace and a sling that kept my arm immobile. The doctor said it would take about 6 to 8 months before I would recover the use of my hand. It didn't seem possible that I would ever be able to paint again, but I am so happy and blessed to be able to tell you all I CAN PAINT AGAIN!!!

I went through 4 months of therapy, then I exercised on my own with exercises the therapist had given me. Then in the park where I live in the winter, they have a stretch and tone class three days a week which I attended and it has been a blessing and a miracle. I have the use of my hand again and a very good range of motion, my arm is getting stronger every day and NO MORE SHOULDER PAIN. I can use an easel again and I am enjoying painting, I have found my passion again. I have finished three paintings and now am working on three of my grandchildrens portraits. These were the only grandchildren I hadn't painted yet, and didn't think I would ever be able to. Thanks be to God, my therapist and my doctor.
`
