you can keep track of your fitness minutes and calories and such on paper or whatever and then when you get a working internet connection enter them on this site. you can switch days via the "Change the day for tracking" button on the tracker.... or click the left and right arrows to switch one day at a time... there are also phone apps if you have a smartphone.

Setup your SparkPage, SparkTeams, SparkMail, SparkAmerica, Friend Feed, Signature & Ticker

...and there's an option to turn off that (IMO space hogging) Quick Links Toolbar at the bottom of the site.

There's also prefrences for SparkPoints showing next to message board posts, Leaderboards and if you're online. And toggle option for scrolling the Team Stream.

I'm sure it can be pretty confusing when you first come into a SparkTeam... all these possibly foreign terms and tons of things to click on. Well here's a brief break-down of how we have things set up.

A SparkTeam is what you've just navigated into and hopefully joined. Officially defined as a way of "Finding support from others who share common experiences and goals can be an important part of your success." and the purpose of SparkTeams is that "SparkTeams are groups that are started by other members who share common interests or goals."

How our "Living with Bipolar Disorder" SparkTeam is organized...

"Try your best to post questions in the proper forum. For example, questions about your workout should be posted in the "Fitness and Exercise" forum."

We have 4 forums:

1. General Team Discussion Forum used for non-specific chat. We have the monthly "What's on your mind" thread going and things like "Inspirations & Meaningful Advice" and "Today my mood is:".

2. Introduce Yourself to Team Forum is a wealth of helpful tips to all team members including SparkPeople navigation tips and tricks. When you're comfortable go ahead and reply in the "Welcome new members.. Introduce yourselves here!" topic and add your birthday information to the appropriate topic.

3. CHALLENGES and GAMES is the fun forum. We have a "Funny & Idiotic" topic going where you can relay whatever crazy thing you saw or did that day or a humorous joke. Another is "Fitness minutes for one month" you want to (unofficially) pledge as a (personal or team) goal.

4. Health Resources Forum is good for seeking specific advice about something. We have the "ask the team for help!" and a "family and friends ask questions here..." where both you and any loved ones of a Bipolar individual can (hopefully) feel comfortable asking questions, concerns, specifics of anything.

=-=-=-=-
TERMINOLOGY EXPLANATIONS

If you want to see all the topics in a forum just click the forum name. Then you are looking at a list of topics. Each forum can have 1, 2, or 3 "sticky" topics. When a leader marks a topic as "sticky" it will always remain in a top position no matter how long ago a post was made to it. Regular topics don't have the "sticky topic" designation and they will rotate order with the most recent posted into one near the top under the "sticky" topics.

SparkPeople recommends to "Use the Message Board "Search" function to look for answers to common questions such as "What are some snacks I can take to work?" Check the dates of threads before you reply; if the most recent post is more than a few weeks old, start a new topic thread for your question." In our group I'd say go ahead and reply to that older topic; there's no harm in refreshing it and getting more people to revisit it.

If there isn't an existing topic that resembles your idea then remember to "Make the topic of your thread specific. Rather than "I need advice," it is more helpful for other members if the title relates to your question or comment, such as "Any advice for healthy breakfasts?"" Our team says, if you have a comment to add on an existing topic just reply inside that topic instead of creating a new one. It'll automatically send notification emails to those who subscribed to new posts and it'll pop that thread to the top of the non-sticky topic list.

So if you've determined you do have a new topic to add click the [Create a New Topic] button. The [Topic:] box is the name of the topic. As just mentioned make it related specifically to what information you want to ask or share. Then the [Message:] box is free form for whatever you wanted to say.

NOTE: If you ever want to change the name of a topic you started, go back into the thread and scroll to the very first original post you made and click the "Edit My Post" button. This will 'unlock' the [Topic:] box and you can edit the topic name. Once you hit [Post Message] again the change is effective immediately for everyone.

"Please keep in mind that other Internet users can see your posts. Also, be very cautious about giving out personal contact information on the Message Boards (or via e-mail) to other members." So while it is possible to edit your posts and topic names to be blank or 'old' or 'delete' or something else generic, it is not possible to totally delete any forum, topic, or reply message.

This helped me figure out the team+forum structure:
Maybe it'll be beneficial to think of each SparkTeam as a office.
Then each Forum as a file cabinet within the office.
Each topic is a folder in the file cabinet.
Within each folder there are papers on that topic called Reply Messages (comments).

It's a hierarchy: SparkPeople | Community | SparkTeam | Forum | Topic | Reply Message

You might have noticed I keep interchanging words. I don't mean to be confusing but it's because we all tend to do it based on our experiences on this site as well as other Internet forums and/or e-mail rhetoric.

emoticon emoticon emoticon

If you have questions about any of this or are just totally overwhelmed, take a moment to catch your breath and relax... then either send Courtney055 or myself a Private SparkMail Message .. or post in the "Welcome new members.. Introduce yourselves here!" found in this very forum (either click the browser back button or click the "Introduce Yourself to Team Forum" hyperlink to go back up one level, then click that Topic Name. Someone will get back to you shortly with their response. NO worries it gets easier with practice.

Welcome to the Living With Bipolar Disorder SparkTeam. We are a pretty active group focused on getting through the struggles of our diagnoses and medications and healthy living. Please take a look around there are tons of interesting conversations going on in the threads.

emoticon
* We are happy that you've looked at joining and/or joined our group.

* No pressure to join conversations.

* Remember that we are all human and each have our own feelings and opinions that may or may not be the same or different than yours.

* We all react differently to everything: medications, dosages, doctors, treatments, personalities, environment, food, etc... We are here to learn from each other and grow to be healthier [and hopefully skinnier] persons.

emoticon Please do not reply to this topic. Informational Only.

In the group therapy I attend there are some Guidelines we follow. Here are the ones I think we can and will apply in this Team:

emoticon * Please don't to discuss past (even if immediate) parasuicidal behaviors. (This means please no forum discussion of previous or current self harming actions or thoughts that would need paramedic/EMT treatment.)

emoticon * If you ask another member for help when feeling suicidal you must be willing to accept help from the persons asked. (In other words please don't just dump an elephant on someone or team members that you are suicidal or hurting yourself or others. If you do please be opening to listening to help and criticism and above all CONCERN! We are here to help.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE - this is NOT any form of censorship. There will be no policing. emoticon There have been comments made on the topics that trigger others. Both Courtney and I have heard some of these dislikes and grievances and concerns. We WANT this group to be a SAFE place where everyone can express what they want.
