Welcome to the group RINLYN! The jujitsu group I'm with trains at a Judo dojo and several of our members train both arts, its a really fun way to train emoticon

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!

New to the group today! Hi everyone!

Style - Kodokan Judo
Rank - Shodan, and Certified Instructor
Weight Loss Goal - More fat loss than weight loss. I wanna be stronger (always stronger!), and get down to a better weight that I don't have to throw myself over the heads of my white belts ;)
Activities I Like - I also do kickboxing and have recently taken up yoga (mostly to help regain flexibility in my ankle after a break, but I've really been enjoying it). I used to enjoy swimming for exercise, but I don't have access to a decent pool for that anymore.
Occupation - I work in a pathology lab, as a wearer of many hats, but primarily Client Service and Materials Management
Hobbies - Playing piano, playing computer/video games (casually), reading and helping out at my dojo (currently assisting in a self-defense program)
Motivation - Getting fitter to be better at my Judo, to be more inspiring to my students, and to feel like my body is amazingly strong

I also want to help my dojo spread their Get REAL project to a wider audience, in hopes of helping more people. Get REAL is primarily targeted to women in domestic violence situations, but we're also working to do more reaching out to children in such situations, and men as well. We're currently looking to create an online course as our next step. I want to make a difference in people's lives.

Hi all!

1. Am a first Dan in Tang Soo Do.
2. Love to spar and compete in tournaments.
3. Have been training Muay Thai and Boxing for the last 2 years.
4. Fought my first Muay Thai "smoker" last may and lost by second round TKO. :(
5. Started at 350 lbs 4 years ago, got down to 270 about 2 years ago, but have been creeping backup since.
6. Train 4-5 nights a week
7. Plan on picking up BJJ/MMA this year :)
8. Train with my family in TSD. My oldest daughter is also a first Dan. My wife and youngest daughters are 5th Gups.
9. My oldest daughter (10 years old) and my son (25 yo) train boxing and muay thai also.
10. Getting to light heavyweight (205) this year. No excuses!

3. One of my best friends happens to be my instructor
4. I LOVE martial arts so much I am there 5 days a week and some weeks six for multiple hours at a time
5. I work from home and am on sparkpeople a lot
6. I get told all the time I am sharp in my movements even though my stances aren't really deep because of my knees but once the weight comes off BAM
7. I want to lose over 100 lbs
8. I am SO excited there is a group for Martial arts on sparkpeople
9. I am married and have been for 5 years

I haven't been active on this group, and I definitely want to change that. :)

1: 2nd Dan Tae Kwon Do, Red/Black in Combat Hapkido, various weapons styles.
2: Was physically handicapped thanks to a foot deformaty when I told my mother I wanted to
be a martial artist someday. 32 years later, thanks to Shriners Hospital...look what I did. :)
3: Favorite weapon is hands down the Sai.
4: Got lucky enough to train with Jason David Frank at Nashville ComiCon recently.
5: Married with three beautiful girls.
6: Bit of a gym rat; always loved going to the gym.
7: Addiction to Zumba as well.
8: Working out means I HAVE to have my music.
9: My goal is to finally master the 540 Roundhouse. Thing drives me insane.
10: Love training outside. Love being out in the sun working out! :)

1. Started studying Kuk Sool one class/week ten months ago at age 43; now practicing six days/week, have earned my blue belt, and been allowed to start helping with kids' classes ... hoping to earn first degree black belt in another two years.
2. Since starting Kuk Sool, have dropped over 40 pounds (down to 122 at 5'3") and would like to lose another 7-10.
3. Did the first handspring of my life shortly after my last stripe promotion. Next up: one-handed cartwheels!
4. Slowly overcoming my tendency to overthink every movement, and just learning to trust myself and my instincts in motion.
5. Can't wait to start grapple sparring at red belt!
6. Have learned to love juhl bongs (nunchucks), staff spins, and sparring, all of which I hated at first (see number 4).
7. Married with two kids who also study Kuk Sool; my daughter still outranks me but I just caught up with my son and will likely pass him in rank soon. I practice at home; he doesn't. Go figure.
8. In addition to spending 15+ hours at the dojahng every week, I have a full-time job (university math lecturer) and expect to finish a Ph.D. within the next 12 months. Good thing the family spends time at the dojahng, too!
9. Most challenging goal I have set for myself for the next 12 months: develop the flexibility to do front splits and side splits.
10. Love, love, love Korean archery!!!

1. I'm about to test for my green belt in TKD, I'm a white belt in muay thai & a beginner in krav maga.
2. Recently I've joined a new MMA gym & between the classes there & TKD, I'm now training 6 times a week.
3. I am usually the only color belt in my TKD classes. Everyone else is a BB second dan or higher.
4. I married my high school sweetheart.
5. I have a 6 year old daughter.
6. We have a huge pet Flemish Giant Rabbit named Ruby.
7. I have PCOS & it has been very difficult to lose weight.
8. I am a certified hypnotist, but no I will not make you cluck like a chicken.

Hi Everyone,

1) Currently I am a Shodan in the Tomiki style of Aikido and am working toward Nidan.
2) I am also an assistant instructor.
3) I cross train in Hapkido and have a strong Judo background.
4) My weapons training includes Jo, Ken, and Manriki Gusari.
5) For work I am a manual therapist in private practice and I teach part time at a local college.
6) I love photography and playing the drums.
7) I also enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking.

I'm relatively new to Hapkido (7 months). I study under Chang's Hapkido Academy (9th kup, yellow belt w/ green stripe)
I'm 24 years old
I am a Ph.D student in physical chemistry in my second year of studies at Clemson University in SC
I am currently 181 lbs
I would like to lose ~40 lbs.
I love making music (electronic music and playing guitar)
I play video games in my spare time as well (PS3, Wii, classic games like SNES)

1. I've been practicing Chen Tai Chi for over a year and a half
2. For almost a year I've been practicing jujitsu through the Gracie Combatives course.
3. For the past few months I've been working on learning wing chun to develop the arm strength/coordination I wasn't getting from the other two styles.
4. I'm planning on losing 50 pounds.
5. I like to drum and dance in my spare time.
6. I'm stoked to see warmer weather. I can't wait to see the daffodils.
7. I'm looking forward to hiking again. I injured my knee 8 years ago and this will be my first summer hiking since then.
8. I think monkeys are hysterical.
9. I'm tending for a high protein/low carb diet. The chen training just exerts a huge protein demand. Carbs just kind of get in the way.
10. I'm not always the best at finishing things.

1) I'm a purple sash in Choy Li Fut kung fu. I was in the instructor training program... 10 years ago! I just came back as a normal student this January.

2) I ran my first half marathon last November. I'm signed up for my first marathon in May.

3) I've been a Spark member since 2007. I even reached my goal weight once! But then I got all obsessed with losing another 5lbs and gained it all back. Oops!

4) I'm going to lose 30lbs by my birthday this fall.

5) My favorite fitness-related book is Born to Run.

6) My favorite martial arts show is Avatar: The Last Airbender (the TV series, NOT the crappy movie!!!)

7) I am a web developer.

8) I live with my boyfriend of 8 years, two cats, and one goldfish. We used to have two goldfish, but one passed away a few weeks ago. :(

9) I am doing the 100 Pushups Plan. When I'm done, I'm going to have to start it over doing full pushups instead of modified ones. ;)

10) I also like yoga, especially ashtanga yoga, but I don't do it very consistently.

1. I'm a 2nd degree black belt in Praying Mantis Kung Fu (Northern style)
2. I have one boyfriend, two cats, and many houseplants
3. I'm studying to become a professor of history, specifically Middle East studies
4. I work as a safety specialist for UPS, so I have a lot of strange trivia involving shelving heights and sprinkler standards floating around in my head.
5. My first lesson in Chen style Tai Chi was with Grand Master Liu Chengde himself.
6. I plan on going to China to train next year in the summer.
7. I'd like to lose about 40 pounds, but I'm flexible on this, much of my body weight is muscle, as it should be.

2. Married to a clown....Do you mean a real professional clown?? If so, HOW AWESOME Is that! :) (I always wanted to go to clown school, everyone thought i was crazy!)

10. They just say that because they are afraid to try it ;) 52 is definitely not to old, I know people much older just starting out. I was 42 when I got my black belt,should be testing for 2nd degree real soon!

11. Your so right! Tae kwon do is so much more than a sport,I think if it is treated just as a sport much of the honer history and tradition is lost. I think of it as a way of life, it becomes ingrained in everything you do.

Hmm... Let's see

1. First style of martial arts I started out learning was Sho du kan
2. Married to a clown
3. My son is testing with me July 31, He is going for his 2nd degree black belt, I am going for my 1st degree black belt in TaeKwonDo.
4. Whenever I get the chance, I also practice a mix of Kempo,street Jujitsu.
5. I will be using Nunchucks as my weapon for testing
6. I will be breaking a cylinder block with an elbow strike
7. I want to go back to school to get my hospitality degree
8. TaeKwondo is a passion
9. I found an abandon kitten 6 days ago, so far so good.. he still hasnt opened his eyes but he is strong and drinking his milk
10. Im 52 years old and hate when people say, 52 is too old for martial arts.
11. One more - I detest when people say TaeKwondo is just a sport. It is not just a sport. TaeKwondo was created for the military. Its hardcore , its deep, its powerful , it's honorable.

Hey there, everyone!

1. I've been training in goju-ryu karate for almost two years. I've been a green belt/brown tip for almost a full year.
2. I'm a college student, with a year and a half left; I'm studying English, history, and education, and looking at a graduate program in library science.
3. I'm a knitter and I make jewelry.
4. I'm trying to find a balance between my career goals/artistic interests (and girly tendencies) and my love for karate.
5. I am a BIG tea drinker, and I'm trying to phase out other types of drinks (like soda) with tea and water.
6. I have ADD, so it's really easy to get caught up in what I should do (or creating a plan) and sometimes a challenge to actually DO it.

Hey! Another Isshinryu practitioner! Awesome!

1. Isshinryu (obviously), Shodan as of last August
2. Two boys and a husband - husband is a green belt, eldest son is an orange, and youngest son gave himself a black eye with his own knee in his first class and decided martial arts weren't for him.
3. Free-lance writer - 3 published articles.
4. Part time organist
5. Sometimes knit for money
6. Out of shape from spending the last six months as a full-time caregiver to my father-in-law as he was dying of liver cancer
7. Hypothyroid, which makes putting weight on all too easy and taking it off really hard
8. Yoga for the last two years
9. Two bassets
10. Avid reader

Hi, I've just stumbled across this team - great to find others with similar interests here on SP.

Ten things - hmm

1. I've started Nisei karate 1 month before my 50th birthday

2. That was four years ago and I'm now at the level of brown belt

3. I'm hoping to get my black belt next year

4. My sensei is a couple of years older than me so I've got no excuses for not trying to keep up with him.

5. I also practice tai chi and yoga and I'm amazed how many of the moves/stances/poses are similar to karate

6. I often have to take over the class as my sensei's work takes him out of town at least one week per month - any good ideas for things to do will be gratefully received

7. I'm an RN as well as a psych nurse; I wish I had learned martial arts skills earlier in my life. Not because I want to beat up on my patients, but because now I feel much more comfortable in handling sticky situations.

8. I've got a husband and two adult children, none of them has the slightest interest in martial arts but they are supportive.

9. My other hobbies are reading, crafts, gardening and taking my dog for long walks.

10. I'm hoping we can travel at least part of our journey together.

1. I study Karate Shi to ryu Style (no space). I started my Karate training at the beginning of January this year and I love it. I haven't missed a lesson yet.

2. So that would make me a white belt. Or better said I have a belt so my gi stays closed LOL.

3. My ultimate goal is 110 lb. I started at 180 in December 2009 and currently I am weighing in at about 146. I hope to reach my goal weight by the end of July. And if my Karate trainer keeps me working like this that's a real possibility LOL.

4. My other hobbies are horseback riding and hiking with my dogs. I also try to get some strength and weight training in at the YMCA.

5. I love animals and have 5 horses, 2 dogs, 6 cats and a blue and golden macaw. And I want some chickens :o). Can you tell I live on a farm?

6. I'm a master bench jeweler and have my own wholesale business. That means my customers are jewelry stores. I make custom jewelry and do alterations and repairs.

7. I like gardening. Each spring I plant a huge veggie garden and I have a fruit garden as well.

8. I'm motivated by gaining more strength and stanima

9. There really isn't anything more...

1. I just decided a few hours ago to start actually using the SP communities.
2. Started studying martial arts in 1999 while in college.
3. I trained with a few instructors while in college. I joined my current dojo in 2001. I love it and they quickly realized I was going to be sticking around....well forever.
4. Training in jui jitsu (brown) and karate (yellow)
5. I am stepping up my training for the next few months because I have a goal to test for my black belt in Jui Jitsu in May.
6. If I or I will say when I achieve that rank, I will be the first female to since the founder's daughter to do so. I believe she did that in the 1940's.
6. Every time I reached a green belt, I changed schools or styles because I didn't have a choice. I just started taking Karate classes again consistently last year.
7. I LOVE jui jitsu. It is an absolute passion. I actually factored in when I would be testing with when I would get pregnant. As I'm sure you realize training in jui jitsu and being pregnant is not an option.
8. I have two children 3 1/2 and 15mo. I took off a little less than a year with the first and a little more than a year with the second.
9. I wanted to train in Karate during both pregnancies, but was not able to with either.
10. I would like to start training in kobodo after I test.

1-complete and utter beginner here. took my very first class two days ago; it's always been something i wanted to get into, and i finally just got over trying to pick a style. i joined a friend who's currently a green belt and went to a class down the street, and i'm so infected, now.

2-they teach taekwondo/youn wha ryu (sp?) at the place down the street; apparently supposed to be a little bit of various styles--mixed stuffness is my cup of tea.

3-i'm a massage therapist and nursing student (ie. i'm really into kinesiology); so i'm a big fan of proper form/technique in all my exercise practises, and i work hard at it!

4-i'm a walker...once in a while i'll run maybe an 1/8 of a mile hahah! i'm primarily a yogini--a fact i was so grateful to myself for when i took my first martial arts class!

5-i've praticed yoga for two years, and have been practising daily for a few months (i've noticed a big change--daily practice makes a difference)!

6-my yoga style is ashtanga/flow with a little sivananda here and there. i do a lot of "yogic arts," which i found to be a decent foundation for martial arts (ie. it has some work that moves towards kicking).

7-i'm interested to know what additional exercises martial artists do, and how those activities complement their practice.

8-i've been on spark a while; not always really active in the community, but i'm always tracking...i reached my goal weight about a year ago (still working on my level of bad@$$ emoticon ).

9-i slept maybe 5 hours (usually stick to 8) the night after my first class because my mind kept ticking and going through the blocks i learned emoticon

10-i have no clue what kind of job to get when i get out of nursing school (a nursing job? ...lol, but srsly...) because i love to eat/snack 5-9 times a day! i don't know what i'd do without second breakfast, brunch, snack, and sevensies! emoticon
