emoticon to the emoticon and Happy New Year ... !!

My yoga practice [a regular practice of well over 3 years] has morphed several times over in the past year, transitioning through a little Kundalini energetics in a former (or semi-former?) studio ... to what is mostly a home practice now (with more and more pilates infused into the yoga) ... calling it Soft 2 Be Strong® Vinyasa yoga... As for established yoga styles, I'm a great big fan of OM Yoga !

In addition, I have rediscovered how much I love meditation itself ...

Again, welcome back to the team, JANEE12!

Hi Everyone, New Year, new team! I have practiced yoga on and off for about 5 years. I adore Ashtanga, but have gained a lot of weight in the last year and find it difficult. I am working to get my weight down, continue to practice Ashtanga at home while taking Hatha class outside to help with flexibility and strength.
Happy New Year everyone!! emoticon

Hello, everybody ... I am AMPHIBI-YOGINI, your new team leader. I work as an administrator in the burgeoning biotech industry ... but in a small company ...

Yeah, I'm over 55, too, but I am going on 6 years old ... with my comic books and .. okay, my toys are yoga toys, though!

I use yoga for weight loss, weight maintenance, muscle tone, developing grace, spirituality (NOT looking for converts ... You are your Own Gurus !!), and being able to sleep at night.

Hopefully, I could use it for augmenting my Kegel exercises, instead of a Thighmaster, instead of some walking (which I can't do much of these days) ...

YMMV, let's get rocking, Team!!

Welcome Meg! We are so happy that you have joined Sparks and joined our yoga team.

There are daily yoga postures to check out. They explain how to get into a posture, any modifications that can be made, the benefits of the asana, and who should not perform the pose.

Also, keep track of the yoga sessions you do as part of your personal goals. Yoga is so good.

Enjoy Megs!

namaste, ashley

Hi - I am Megan

I just joined Spark yesterday and am so happy to have found this group.

I have done some yoga at home previously, but I am trying to get back to it. It has been a few years, and my butt is starting to look like my office chair. I use a DVD called MTV Yoga, and have had great success with it. That is how I lost that "last 10" pounds after 2 children.

I have made some big life changes recently - just quit smoking (3 days ago) and I am enrolled to go back to college this fall and earn a degree in geology/environmental science. Health & fitness (physical and mental) are definitely part of my overall goals.

I did my first DVD workout yesterday (well, part of one), but I am on my way.

Nice to 'meet' you all.
Meg

Welcome Marcia to the team! Lots of god progress and ideas to be shared in our community!

right now, the team challenge is to either go to a yoga class once a week or do a 60 min yoga practice at home. Our goal is to hit 25, pretty low, but hopefully next time we can try to double that depending on how many people add it as their goal.

This is a great forum to ask questions about yoga. Enjoy exploring new ways of developing a practice.

Hi, I am new to yoga. I am 46, married, no children with the exception of the four legged kind.

I have tried a DVD of Bryan Kest Power yoga and it was good. A little too challenging for me, but I like yoga so far. Any suggestions would be welcome.

thai massage is fantastic!!!!! i haven't had any training in it yet; i do have a book and a friend nearby who's also interested in that, though (which is nice) ^^

i love doing a little deep-tissue/british sports therapy and a lot of assisted stretching. lol i haven't had a whole lot of continuing education so far. how about your massage?

i'm practising duncan wong's "yogic arts" at home; it's an ashtanga blended with gung fu and thai massage (although i'm not sure where the thai massage comes in heh). but yeah...duncan is my hero cause he's a massage therapist, and so we work the wrists, hips, and thighs. i messed up my shoulder doing massage, and practising some segments from that has been invaluable in working out my kinks!

you teach yoga, right? i've been thinking i'd love to get teacher training some day; though i feel like i'm so far from a place where i should even consider it (a. i haven't even been practising regularly for a year...).

You bet - yoga and massage are the two greatest things in the world. I would love to learn how to put those two together and go to Thailand and study Thai massage. That would do so awesome. But right now it is just regular massage for me. I am taking a correspondence course for reflexology and that is really cool too. What type of massage and yoga do you do?

Welcome Sherry! You will definitely be building some amazing balancing capabilities through yoga. Learning to slow the thoughts in the mind and bring an inner peace will also be more of the benefits that you get to experience.

A really great balance pose is Garudasana, or Eagle posture. Transfer your weight onto the right foot as the left foot crosses in front of the right and try to wrap the left toes around the right calf. If they are not going there yet, that is fine, just have the left calf cross the right. Begin to lower yourself into a type of squat by bending the right knee. Go only as low as you are comfortable going. Now take the arms in front of the body. Extend the left arm, place the right arm overtop and link the fingers by twisting the arm somewhat. Now bend the elbows. Do not close the eyes, but try to find something that isn't moving. The drishti, or gaze, can even move upwards to the third eye, the ajna chakra. I cannot look up yet in this pose, so I have the intention that my energy is going to my third eye. This pose can be held as long as you like and as deep. But remember to switch to the other side. It is a great balance posture that really works the glutes, hamstrings, and abs. I love it!!

Hi I'm Sherry and I just found this team on Robin's page. I have been wanting to learn yoga for a little while now. I have friends who do it, but I have very bad balance so I didn't think I could do it. My friend says I will build balance with yoga. So, here I am.

Hey Andrea!! I began teaching in January 2007, so about a year and a half now. I did my first workshop on the chakras in May. It went really well. I was completely nervous about teaching a two day workshop, but it was really good. You get to go so much deeper when you just immerse yourself in yoga for a few days.

Welcome Ashley! I also practice Ashtanga yoga. When did you begin teaching? I have my days with meditation, I can only clear my mind for a short time, only while in savasana and it's not on a regular basis! But, it's enough to keep me coming back 2-3 times a week, just hoping to experience that brief moment again.

Greetings! My name is Ashley, and I am a registered massage therapist and yoga instructor. I teach hatha yoga (well, that is what everyone categorizes it as), but I mostly practice ashtanga. I had a wonderful teacher/mentor who got me back into yoga after I had been away from it for a few years. I try and come to my mat at least three times a week. I am looking for guidance on meditation - my mind has a problem with one-pointedness.

lol my dad introduced me to it when i was in high school. he doesn't practice anymore--grrrs!
i loved it then, but didn't begin to practice like a real yogini til this year. i saw i needed yoga in order to practice massage therapy; it teaches me proper body mechanics (how to use my body without injuring it).

I am sonny, I just started doing yoga this year, I took a low impact class for back pain, and to help with mediation after I had my reiki attunment and have since become hooked, it feels so good, I am trying to soak up all the information I can about all the different kinds.

I started doing it at the beginning of the school year, so back in August, but was only going once a week because I could only go after school and couldn't make the morning classes that met twice a week. The dvd that I bought was Beginner's Yoga by Gaiam, but wasn't really impressed and am looking for a better one each time I head to Target.
I was doing pretty good about practicing yoga at home but have really fallen off the exercise wagon all together lately. Hopefully, finding a yoga group will help motivate me into getting back to it.

Welcome Rhiannon, we're glad you joined! How long have you been doing yoga? I started practicing Ashtanga yoga one year ago and was hooked. I have never stayed with anything for a year, but there was something different about yoga. I go to class three times a week now and plan to increase to four. I have a hard time practicing at home, so I have to attend class!

Hi everyone! I'm Rhiannon and I am a high school math teacher, wife and momma to a 3 year old puppy dog named Annie, who is spoiled rotten, which is, of course, the best way to have a puppy!
I have fallen in love with yoga. I was going pretty regularly to the local YMCA and taking a yoga class, which was a mix between regular and power yoga. I also bought a video, but didn't like it because it was really easy at the time. However, school has gotten the better of me and I haven't been in weeks and am really missing it and hope to get back sometime soon.
I would love to hear what you all think about yoga. Have a great evening!
Rhiannon

I'm glad that you want to stay with it! The practice may progress in the direction you're looking for as you continue. After awhile, you may start focusing more on the breathing.

Unfortunately, the key is finding the right teacher and class for you. Perhaps, you will get what you're looking for combining your videos at home with the weekly class. Hang in there!

It was very basic and she said it was hatha. Like I said, I am going to try again next week, because I so want the benefit of the stretching and relaxing and working on balance and flexibility.

I finally made it to my first yoga class this evening and am not sure about it. I liked it enough to want to go back, but it did not incorporate as much relaxation breathing as I expected. I guess I did not know what to expect, since I had never been before. I will go back. The problem is that this is the only class, time location and instructor that is an option for me at this time with 2 small kids at home, I don't have any chance to compare instructors and studios, etc.
I will go back as I loved all the stretching stuff.

Thanks, Heidi emoticon

I would do a search for BEryl Bender Birch and any of her videos or a Baron Baptiste. If you want something a little slower, try a search on Amazon for Gentle Yoga or Hatha Yoga....just to get started.

If you are new to taking yoga or any fitness, once a week in a hatha class.. if you are not new to fitness (and you walk alot, etc) any class should be fine once you speak to an instructor. If you tell me what town you live in (and state) I will try to filter some studios for you and narrow it down.

Hi Heidi and Kelly! Andrea, a member here is also very versed in yoga and you can totally believe her when she says you will be hooked after one class.
Now, if you are not, you may not be in the right style of yoga or with the right teacher - it is very personal.
Try a beginner class near you or a gentle yoga class to get started. Many times YMCA classes have a more gentle version (style doesn't matter) in the day time if you can get there.

A video for beginners is also good....

Welcome and looking forward to chatting!
Michele
