Hi Sandra! I haven't tried a weighted hoop, but while I was researching (before I ordered my first hoop), I read a recommendation not to use weighted hoops. If it's hurting you, I would highly recommend you stop using it. Some bruising is normal, but you should give yourself a little recovery time and not hoop on bruises. Arnica gel or lotion containing Arnica are great for bruises and soreness. I remember very slight bruising in the beginning (160psi 42" hoop), but it doesn't happen anymore, unless I whack myself trying to a trick and FAIL :-) And it never hurt to hoop. You'll get a great workout from using your new 160psi hoop (that's a perfect weight for beginners). Hope that helps. Let me know when your new hoop arrives and how you like it! Happy Hooping!

so I have a question. I just ordered a 160psi hoop so hopefully it will be the right weight for me.
My question is I have a weighted hoop now that I have been practicing with, and it literally hurts me. I even have bruising from it. Is this normal? Will I get used to this? Or am I doing it wrong?
should I continue trying with the hoop I have until the hoop I ordered comes, or do I just wait for it?

I have played with an ACU hoop at a hoop jam...those things hurt like a mother! Like I thought I would end up with a bruised spleen or something. I would stay far away from them.

DAIMERE - You said to stay away from the ACU hoops. May I ask why? I've recently thought about getting one and was under the impression that this particular hula hoop was good for beginners.

Update on places to buy hoops or hoop DVDs from:
Hoopnotica (I now have all five DVDs. If you need a larger travel hoop, buy an extra connector and you have a mega large hoop! Two together can be a tandem hoop!): www.hoopnotica.com/319.html
BodyHoops: www.bodyhoops.com/?Click=2260
FireHoops and regular hoops from Synergy Firehoops: zfer.us/FAgiB
TrooHoop (this is my favorite travel hoop): www.troohoops.com/index.php?id=349
Dube for poi or other things: www.dube.com/index.php?id=349
Hoopmommas, (please say that Shannon "Hooplove" recommended this store): www.etsy.com/shop/HoopMamas

Also to warn you, I am snobby over foam covered hoops. You can do this with the proper hoops!

Here is more stuff I stole from an olllld thread that I didn't write but it holds true. I'm too lazy to link them though.

I also recommend using YouTube to learn any new tricks. I don't recommend buying DVDs. Although I do believe DVDs can be useful at times. Some DVDs are hit and miss. Best DVDs are Hoopnotica and Bodyhoops. Although if you want a workout, feel free to get the BettyHoops dance workout. It's mainly waist hooping but very, very heart pumping.

I do not generally like Expert Village but they have some good YouTube tutorials on the very basics of hula hooping: youtu.be/tKoUKjahPHE

Some of my favorite channels to get tutorials from on YouTube are
Caroleena: youtu.be/Pwqw20Kk8AA
SaFire: youtu.be/NR9eU-WVPU4
Babz: youtu.be/_dLPFQClNZQ

The following websites are also excellent resources:
Hooping.org: www.hooping.org/
Hoop City: www.hoopcity.ca/main

And if you want some inspiration, these are just a few of my all-time favorite hoopers:
Brecken: youtu.be/phZQzPK9t0Q
Sharna: youtu.be/0Th8lRGCsTU
Anah: youtu.be/abS1dLxAH44

Btw, heavy hoops are excellent for beginners but don't use a heavy hoop for any advanced tricks. You'll bruise yourself up and hurt your joints (especially for hand hooping). For dancing, I use hoops that weigh 1lb or less.

Oh, and this is what happens when hoopers get silly: youtu.be/E7nLvZajyRY

Added 5/28/2012:
FYI: Daimere (Shannon "Hooplove") is the current active leader of Hula Hoop Rockstars. She is the owner of Undefined Hoopdance, a certified BodyHoops/Hoopnotica instructor. She loves to hoop and hooping wasn't easy for her. 2011 was the first year she could ever hula hoop on her waist. She's struggled and cried through her hoop process. If you are having problems, trust us, Shannon understands. If you don't believe that, check out www.hooplove.org for her old blog entries about her hooping process. Shannon is one of the few people that may understand that you can be plus sized and hoop and not lose weight (evidently she's the only one that hasn't lost any weight/inches with the hoop). She was able to maintain weight with hooping. Yay hooping!

Good luck and happy hooping!

I did a lift in a class and the whole class has started calling it the gypsy.

My L1 BodyHoops curriculum says this:

Waist hooping
space inside hoop WH
figure 8
cape twirl
walking with hoop (HA)
lasso/halo
lifts
pass down
walking with the hoop for realz now
helicopter/atomic twirl
passing

In my head what I do is but I've only taught basic first hooping class:
waist hooping
Maybe try to dip your hands in and activate your arms. NO pressure
figure 8
hand hooping/halos
cape twirl
off body passing
And chill with your hoop time.

Now the other class I did, we experimented with lifts and knee hooping. They want to be like me so hard and I'm like chill. Get comfortable now inside your hoop. Although one girl has attended every class, so I'd understand she'd really want the "gypsy move"

I'm with you Shannon! I need a "favored progression"! Just passing the hoop around my body is a challenge! Got lasso going yesterday in the yard. I'm still struggling with the names of the different moves too. Baby steps.

I've been there but it doesn't thrill me super much. Now, if someone made me a list of a "favored" progression into hooping, I would be curious. I know we all learn stuff at different rates buttt yah.

WOW! Awesome post Shannon! You've got it all here!

Ahem, no, I'm definitely not a hippie, I predate hippies.
I also couldn't hoop before last fall but decided to learn before I turned 70 and I did! Profile picture is on my 70th birthday!

If you want to hoop, you can. Alone or with others; it's all fun!

STICKY PLEASE

Welcome! This group is for people of all shapes, sizes and skill levels. If you love to rock out on the waist, that's fine! If you love mini hoops, awesome. This group is for everyone. Welcome!

Here's info on hooping:

What is hooping?

Hooping is an amazing hobby that can change your life! It can be as low impact or high impact as you need. Hooping is whatever you want it to be! There is an amazing hoop community online via this group or hooping.org. If you want to waist hoop, feel free! If you want to learn sick tricks, do it! This is your "me time." Don't ever feel like you have to be something you are not!

What is the deal with hoop size?
www.hooping.org/2011/02/hoop-size-de
my
stified/

My thoughts on hoop size: don't be afraid to go large. Especially if you are larger! Don't be afraid to go heavy. I do some hot things with a 160 hoop that is hard even on a 100 hoop. I'd say stay clear from "fitness" accu-hoops or whatever ones that come with the foam and ripples.

A decent beginner size could be a 42" 160 PSI hoop. Since I'm larger, my first hoop was about 50" 1inch 160 PSI. In a few months, I downsized to a 48" 3/4" 160 PSI. After a year of practice, I was able to go down to a 43" 3/4" 160 PSI. My hoops are still larger than average hoopers but I have so much joy inside my circle. Yes, I am able to do offbody moves with a 48" hoop. I get annoyed when having to switch.

When you are learning to waist hoop, switch it up with some offbody with a lighter hoop if you have to. That helped me keep hooping FUN instead of a cry fest. You CAN do this.

"I've looked on youtube and all I can see are skinny hoopers. Is there hope for me?"
Yes! Anyone of any size can hula hoop. The biggest thing is you have to keep trying. If you have the right size hoop for you, and if that means having 5 different hoops, go for it!

If it asks who sent you, tell them Daimere

Are there DVDS?
Yes! There is a hoopnotica, BodyHoops, a HoopBody DVD (out of print), and a few others.

Is there really hooping retreats?
You betcha! There might be a small one in your area! There is going to be two in Kentucky. Maybe there is one this summer close to you? If not, there are huge ones like Hoop Camp, Hoop Convergence, Hoop Path, and many more!

Hoop jams? What's that?
Well a hoop jam is when a group of people hit up a local spot and hoop it up. This can also include all sorts of flow arts. These can be indoor or outdoor. Start one in your local area! Grab some extra hoops and bring a boombox. Hoops attract people like flies!

Flow? What is Flow that people talk about?
I don't know what it is either. But it doesn't matter right now. What matters is that you learn to be one with your hoop and having fun. Once you can totally groove with your hoop, you will have your flow. Flow is also different for everyone. Don't compare yourself with anyone, my friend. Don't worry. It will come.

Is this a hippie/raver/etc thing?
Well, I don't know. I've seen tons of different people hoop. But I can tell you one thing, most the people in the hooping community are wonderful! These are the people to become best friends with cause from my experience, they are amazing. I can tell you that I am so thankful for all my hooping friends. And to any of my hooping friends out there, thanks for being here with me. You mean the world to me.

Can you lose weight hooping?
I'm sure you could. I've read things about people doing it. Of course, if you walk 3 miles every day, you'd lose weight, if you are eating correctly. If you are overindulging all the time or have healthy problems, it may not be easy. Hooping is not a magic cure. It takes, typically, exercise and healthy eating to lose weight. Although who doesn't want an exercise regime that you are looking forward to? I do!

What about how many calories will I burn?
According to the ACE survey, it will burn 210 calories. Do I believe that? Not totally. Now, I'm heavier than most of those people in the survey. Of course, I'd burn more no matter what. Other than that, it depends on what you are doing. I do a lot of waist, chest hooping, reversals, some jump throughs, vortexes and a lot of arm weaving. I can be drenched in sweat in 20 minutes. Do I believe I burned at least 200 calories?! You betcha. Some days even more! Either way, it's fun!

I've never been able to hula hoop before. This is impossible!
No, it's not! If there is a will, you can! Try out every size hoop you can. Try your friends, make some, etc. I never could hula hoop before 2011 and by 2012, I was NOMINATED for Newbie Hooper of the Year. So, yes you can do this. I believe in you so much! I started with a mammoth hoop and I can do some rockin' things with my large hoops.
