Hello Don,
I completely agree with your statement about "nothing but bikes" when the roads aren't all ice. I probably won't do a 5K but hey, you never know, I also said I would never do a century ride and thus far I have done two....lol.

I am not a runner, but to mix things up I take a couple of months in March, April to prepare for my one & only official 5K in early May...then it's nothing but bikes, thank you! :-)

KA_JUN,
Although I have eyed some of those fat tire bikes and studded tires I do not think I want to do that just yet. I do ride in the winter, I take my Specialized Surrus Elite out in the winter months. I also use it for trips where I haul my trailer.
I am seriously considering taking up running for the winter months. The last time I ran I was in my 30's and I did not have a wrecked knee either. So I am a little nervous but serious. I will start out small...

Welcome! Don't get sad during winter, there are always fat bikes and studded tires!

As I wrote to Maggie, I may have to postpone it until next summer. Either way I will be going. Paperwork and deadlines are looming large. I have accepted it and am pushing through the leg work that must be completed even if I go next summer.

Hello Maggie,
Thank you for the added excitement! I am still in the process of figuring things out with my university here in the states. It is becoming a longer process than I first thought and it may mean I do not go this summer but next summer instead, if I cannot get all the appropriate paperwork done in time. But I will be going!
I love this team too!

Hahaha I know right? I figured admitting this very "terrible" problem would help alleviate it...however that is not the case. I just rode 30 minutes on the trainer as well as my other workout DVD that I do. I love being able to get on my bike even if it isn't outside (yet) but it helps.

How very cool! So much of Europe is so nicely cyclocentric! Looking forward to hearing all about your adventures overseas!

Thank you everyone for the welcome! I have been riding on my magtrainer everyday for a minimum of 30 minutes. It isn't like riding the road but it will have to do for now. This year is going to be epic for me. I am in school now (online university) and I am doing quite well. As a result of that I was inducted into the honor society and now have a chance to study abroad. The reason I am telling you all this is because of where I will be going, Rome, Italy. YES I am so stoked! My plan is to buy a bike while over there, ride it EVERYWHERE and then ship it home with me! I do hope it works out that way. Anyways, thank you for the warm welcome!

Welcome Christina! I have been a life-long cyclist with many centuries behind me but several years ago I began to sit on my butt and get fat!! I would get out on one of my bikes occasionally but mostly not. Last year I lost my dad to a heart attack and I decided shortly thereafter I was not going to let that happen to me. It took me a few months longer but in October I jumped back into Spark People and began making changes to my diet and lifestyle. I have slowly added more activity by run/walking and riding my bike again. I'm now riding on my trainer in the living room but as soon as the weather gives me some nice dry days I'm off riding again. Thanks for the inspiration!!

Another CyclePath, eh? :-)

Welcome to our SparkFamily! Road bikes rock! But yeah, winters are so TOUGH!

I'm in upstate NY...not enough snow for cx skiing, but too much cold & yuck for cycling as I'm a wuss for biking in such weather.

I am new to this team and have been more diligent with tracking on SP as well. I love the community feeling I get while on here. This time it is different for me.
I have been biking seriously since 2010 and have participated in two century rides. My first attempt was on a comfort bike in which I lasted for 67 miles. My second attempt last year I completed 100 miles on my new road bike. I love cycling, it has become such a huge part of my life. I get sad every winter (here in New England it gets freaking cold, snowy, and plain miserable) I do bike in the winter I just take my Specialized out instead of my Scott Contessa (my baby..lol). My dear friend, Jan and I take yearly trips with our bikes and the last trip we took was cycling down the Erie Canal (mule trail) with about 40lbs. of gear each and camped along the way. It was a pretty amazing trip and I recommend it to anyone. One tip: eat to fuel yourself and carry spare tubes.
