Great goals, all of them! Learning the mechanics of a bike, especially...one I need to do better with as I'm all thumbs mechanically. But have picked up a bit here & there...at least I can change a tube now! :-)

Some of you may already know me; I'm a pretty active participant in the generally message boards (especially the fitness and nutrition boards) and I've been around since September.
I used to be an avid cycler in college and high school; I was in the best shape of my life, and didn't have a car... I rode everywhere. 20 miles in a day just going places wasn't unusual.
Last fall, I got my bike repaired and was going to ride it, but wound up realizing there was a new problem with the gears that I hadn't realized it had... only shows up when riding, and I hadn't ridden it but once before the repair.
So I let it languish in the shed.
NOw, though, I'm ready to ride; the summer heat has made it tough to run, but I can bike in any weather, rain, shine, heat, or otherwise. I'm pretty fit, though I fell off the wagon in the last week. I'm planning on going today to get my gear problem repaired, and start riding it to the gym. The gym's just 3 miles away, so it won't be hard to get used to.
I can't wait to ride again. I miss it! I even bought a bike helmet (something I NEVER wore before) because I have too much riding on me right now to risk a head injury. :)
My biggest goals are to get back in the habit of riding daily, and use the bike for my close-by errands, and ride to the gym when I go, instead of driving. I also want to learn to fix my OWN bike, but I need to find someone locally to teach me! I've never been mechanically inclined, but I do need to learn.
