I've also considered carrying some bear spray, but it's easier to simply minimize the chances of an encounter. Give a bear an opportunity to go the other way, it will.

Once nice thing up here is as sections of the highways are rebuilt, DOT is adding bike trails.

And cold is relative! In winter, any temp above freezing can (and usually does) feel like a heat wave.

Psalm: Welcome to the group! I rode the Rockies in Colorado and Wyoming. I always wanted to go "North to Alaska" Johnny Horton made it sound so good! (COLD)! A wise choice you made to avoid MaMa Moose and the kids!! A cell is good. . . along with a good police whistle!

Over time, more & more cyclists are commuting in the winter up here. I get really irritated at many of them, though, because they do little to nothing to make themselves visible. Dark clothing against dirty snow in the dark does make it easy to see a cyclist on the edge of the road.

Day off today, going for a long ride but I will avoid the areas now closed in the wake of Sunday morning's bear mauling in a local park. I'm sticking to the paved trails instead.

Slim, that's awesome! 2005 was a very hot summer, unusually so. Most summers are not that warm (certainly this one isn't). And so far no major fires are smoking up the air, although a few months ago Gobi dust storms and Siberian fires made the air nasty.

The ride to Tok (and beyond) is a virtual ride. We're simply adding miles from our normal exercise runs.

Welcome! You definitely have challenges that the rest of us don't have in the lower 48. I'd be a fair weather cyclist, too, LOL!

Ah, I noticed in one of the other threads a mention of carrying a cell phone when riding. I highly recommend that. When I bought my bike back in 1996, my next purchase was a cell phone. There was no way I going out on some of those trails without a way to call for help if needed, especially since I like to get out early in the day. At one end of town, moose are frequently encountered and on the other, bears are a potential threat. Of course, moose or bears can be encountered anywhere in Anchorage.

So far I've only encountered moose, which is just fine by me. Some were placid, just standing on the edge of trail chewing away as cyclists passed by within arm's reach. Others get agitated. One time, an unhappy mama and her babies were blocking the trail. So I did a u-turn and rode several miles out of my way to avoid her. No way was I going to risk tangling with her!

Hi,
Welcome!
Alaska rules, and is the best.
I've ridden there twice. In 1998, rode from Fairbanks to Anchorage. In 2005 started in Fairbanks down the Richardson, Denali Highway to Denali N.P. Could really feel the climate change. It was hot and in the 80's, dry, rainless, cloudless, smoky with all the fires in 2005, kind of scary. Can't wait to go back, always thinking about Alaska.

Would love to hear about your ride to Tok and beyond to the lower 48. Keep us posted!

There are other sports besides bike riding. Not sure I would do ice biking either.

Happy riding!

Hi folks! I'm another Alaskan on the team (and in fact I found you folks by checking out an SP friends updated SparkPage).

I'm a recreational rider, sticking pretty much to paved (or so-called paved) trails and roads with a little bit of dirt riding so far this summer. I want to get offroad but have decided my current bike batters my wrists and hands too much for that. So a new bike is on the list, one with front shocks.

I'm also leader / coleader of two teams: Alaska and Anchorage Unite!. We have a biking challenge on the latter team: we're biking from Anchorage to the Lower 48. We're almost to Tok.

So far I'm a fair weather rider, avoiding winter biking. Why? dark, cold, lack of good plowing, drivers who don't see cyclists, no studded tires. Maybe some year.
