Howdy!
Cycling is fun, I am a slow rider and my husband is a "goat". He will climb anything faster than the average bear. His doctor told him to buy a bike to lose some weight. Two months later he signed up and rode the Arthritis Coast to Coast Classic. Hence where he gets the name goat after climbing Big Sur and Solvang. I went along as a support group staff but I would love to be able to keep up with him one of these days. I do some riding but am focusing on walking the Avon Breast Cancer Walk. Someone said I should get in some rides for endurance. I like the Santa Fe dam in Irwindale because it's flat after the initial heart thumping climb up to the semicircle track.

Welcome to the site. If you would like to log your miles there is a free journal at bikejournal.com. SP also has a bike club there as well if you want your mileage to be recorded for the club as well

Hi I live in Little Rock, Arkansas and I love to ride my bike. I have a hybrid bike that I LOVE bc it gives me the speed and freedom my mountain bike never did. I am a fair weather rider who also loves walking hills and Turbo Jam. I rode every day last Fall and now that the weather is wonderful here, I'm picking it back up. I have my first race June 14th that I'm nervous but excited about!

hi everyone! i live in CT an have been road cycling for 3-4 years. I mostly ride by myself out of convenience but do ride with gal friends every now and then. 2 years ago i got my weight down to 115 and road Mt. Washington. since then, i have added 10 pounds and want to get them back off. I enjoy riding hills and not so much distance. it's nice to find others that share my enthusiasm and weight issue.

Hi,

I live in Oakland, CA. I'm a pretty new rider - I did my first 2 centuries last summer (then gained a lot of weight over the winter). emoticon I just started riding with the Oakland Yellowjackets - a fun, non-competitive group. But I need to get over riding my brakes on the downhills !

Hi! My name is Sandy and I live in Grand Junction, western Colorado. I have been a cyclist since I was a kid....work and related stuff have interfered with cycling in the last 3 years, but I am back to riding again.
My best year was a little over a 1,000 miles on the bike, I want to beat that this year.
I ordered a new bike and will pick it up this friday...it is the Specialized Ruby Expert Compact. I am THRILLED...my current bike is about 15 years old and I can't wait to get some miles on the new bike.
I am going to Oregon to ride Crater Lake with a friend this summer...hope to get in some long rides locally before then. I am registered for 2 60 mile events in May....

January goal: fit into ski pants by months end! Ack!

MILEAGE GOAL 2011:
1500 miles

Hi-

I'm Maria- 34 yo teacher in Boston. I'm recovering from my second knee surgery in 2 years (non-biking related)...my doctor says I can start biking outdoors again in 1 month. Excited to get back on my bike but nervous as well. The day before I blew out my knee 2 years ago, I had completed a 63 mile ride...it will be challenging to be patient and work myself back up to being able to do something like that again.

Glad to be part of the team

I have been doing spinning classes for a couple of months getting my self conditioned and finally got the money to get my bike on the afternoon of 22 APR. So far I have put about 40 miles on it. Getting a computer to help track miles more accurately on the 1st. I am already becoming addicted to riding and finding myself enthralled with the feeling of the wind and the glory of the outdoors. I am a happy heathen these days.

Hello!
I would like to introduce myself! I am not new to SP..but I was browsing and found this site! I have been an avid rider for years and I have been a competitor as well. I suffered a couple serious setbacks medically and I have been out of the loop for a while, but this is my summer to shine! I am familiar with RAGBRAI as I lived in Iowa for 6 years! I had bicyclists camping in my yard. I am one of maybe 25 people(that I know) to ride Pikes Peak non-stop to the top! I am glad to be here and I look forward to getting to know all of you !

Hi there everyone. I've been a spark member for awhile now and I just got a new road bike (Trek 7.3 WSD). My husband commutes on his new Trek everyday. I'm working on getting better since I'm still a newbie when it comes to serious riding. We've got a great 12 mile loop around our house and I did it the first time Saturday. It sure kicked my but though. I'm getting used to road bike seats as I have always had cushy mountain bike seats. Nice to meet you all and have a good ride!

Hi I'm Angie and I'm from Tennessee. My husband and I bike mainly road bike but sometimes mountain biking. We just got started back this year. We didn't bike in the winter and then we are very busy until April 15th in our business.

I got my first ride in Sunday. It's a short route (16 miles) not too hilly but some. I also did this route yesterday. So this week I've got around 32 miles in. We ride together longer when we can get a baby sitter :) I usually save the longer rides for the weekends. My longest so far is 50 miles.

We have some pretty steep hills around here so we do get a decent workout. I also lift weights 3 days a week and run when I can't bike.

Look forward to getting to know you all.

Hi

My name is Jim and I'm from Oshkosh, WI hence a very limited of outside riding season LOL

I'm restarting on riding again. I was a casual rider thinking of doing mini-Tri's but am not a good swimmer and lost interest. But I had to have the good bike. I own a Raleigh Technium.

My wife and I back before kids entered into the Door County Century. She signed up for the 50 and I the 100 and we both accompled 75 miles. We were turned away for the last leg of the event because we missed the cut off time to start the last leg:-(

I have started this year I have 3 rides under my belt and I have done about a dozen spinning classes which kick my butt. I also did some riding on the bike machines at the Y.

I'm using this summer/year as a training year ... I do think I will enter in any of the events this year. I do not think I'm ready yet to get in one and be some what competitive ( Like finish at least in the middle of the pack) I might do the Door County Century if I can get some decent riding times in and training in?

Hi. My name is Beth. I am just starting out so I guess it is just for FUN right now. My husband likes to run but maybe someday he'll ride with me. I only ride about 5 hours a week for now, still building my strength and I would love to get an indoor trainer because the weather is so iffy still, ran into strong headwinds a few days ago and felt like I was going uphill FOREVER, lol. That and frozen fingers. I am a homeschooling Mom right now with 5 teenagers and a 5 yo. So I stay a little busy but most of the teens drive now so that helps. I've been married almost 24 years (WOW, already?) and I am hoping this is a new hobby for me but I need to find a road buddy! My 14 yo comes out with me once in a while. I'm only getting in about 7 miles a day right now but I live close (3 blocks) from open country roads and a nearby lake that I hope to explore. I live in gorgeous IDAHO!
That's me and I love reading your inspiring efforts. Keep it up!!

Kellie,

I started weights at my gym. Hubby is helping me. Making sure I do it correctly so as not to hurt myself. I did have a bike fit about 5 years ago. And you're right it does make a big difference! My old muscles and tendons are just getting tight with age. I have also started stretching every morning. Doing this for a week now and I already feel a difference. I was hoping to get out this weekend for a road ride but the weather man says SNOW!!! Now what's up with that? So Joe and I may just do a mountain bike ride or go to the gym.

Pedal On!

Hello!

I'm new to this team, but not new to Sparkpeople. I've been spending my winter learning to run, but Spring is here and I need to get miles under my wheels!

I have been a mountain biker for years, but not too much into it the last few seasons. (Hence a huge weight gain that I am working to lose)! Argh.

My husband is from Iowa and has always wanted to ride in RAGBRAI- a week long ride across Iowa in July of about 475 miles. We entered the lottery (will find out in May if we're in), bought two nice (for us newbie riders anyway):) road bikes last week (Cannondale Synapse 7 men and women)and are just waiting for the rest of the snow to clear from the streets.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you!

Jamie

Welcome to the cycling team. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your road bike. That’s awesome of your sister to take care of you. There are changes you can make to your mountain bike that can lighten it up such as putting on new, road tires.

If you’re having problems with injuries you might also look into getting your bike fit to you. A good bike fit makes sooooooooooooooooooooo much difference in your ability to ride almost (except for those darn sit-bones) pain free.

hi i'm ashley from athens!...i just had a fire lit under my @$$ to bike after watching my sister bike in the Little 500 in bloomington. it seems everyone there is HUGE into biking, so it really got me motivated...ive always loved biking, but i have a mountain bike and, unbeknownst to me, the difference between road biking on a mountain bike and a road bike is HUGE, so my sister is gonna check out the local places that refurbish bikes and see if she can find one for a reasonable price and bring it down for my graduation in may...i'm pretty excited and cant wait to get started!

Hi. I'm Jason, I'm 30, and I've been commuting to work (3.5 miles each way) for a year now. In that time, I've only missed a handful of days, either because of ice or scheduling issues with the job. I also like to get 20-mile days in over weekends, if I can. I'd guess that I got about 1300-1400 miles in between April to Dec. of last year, and this year I'm shooting for 2k. So, wish me luck!

KJeanne,

I am going to check out your weight training in cycling coach page. I do need to do weight training. I always put it off but lately I've noticed I've been injuring myself (pulling muscles, knees hurting (that never hurt before), stiffness and just plain soreness) and I believe it's because I do no weight training. Besides turning 54 this year I need it for my bones!

Thanks I'll check out your posting tonight when I get home from work!

WOW! We have a lot of new folks. Welcome: MAMAJENNY007, CANOELOVER, SUE1326, THECATSMEOW8008, DESHRINK, MERRY.PINK, RENA1965, and 2DUWAH
This is a great team for sharing stories and advice, having fun and getting encouragement.
We all have the cycling addition in common!

MERRY.PINK
Concerning the strength training with your hubby: typically cyclists have different seasons where they focus on strength training. That would be Oct – Jan then they go into the racing or competition season. During the winter (Oct -Jan) season the focus is on building muscle then leg speed.

My cycling coach had me on killer regime for strength training Look at the thread cycling coach, under general team discussion, for more information on my training. There might be something useful you can use with your husband.

2DUWAH
When are you doing the MS 150?

RENA1965
WOW! Great weight loss!!! Way to stick to your goal over time!

THECATSMEOW8008
The figure out what mileage goal to set, you might want a cycling computer. If you go to your local bike store, they can install it for you. When I set my 2007 goal, I decided how many miles I would ride each week them multiplied it by 52 then rounded it up. My goal was 3000 miles and it was hard work to reach that goal. I did make it with 2 miles to spare!

SUE1326
I want to go on one of those bike tours too. My hubby & I are looking into a Canadian lighthouse tour this fall.

Hello everyone. I just got into cycling last Fall and this past Saturday I rode in my first organized ride. I rode 22 miles and fell off my bike 4 times! (apparently you are supposed to clip out before you stop). All in all, it was a great experience and I can't wait until my next ride which is the MS 150. I probably won't ride the entire 150 miles, but I'm going to do my best and enjoy the experience no matter what! I am officially hooked on cycling.

Hi my name is Rena and I have lost 176lbs and been doing my life style change since week 46 back in 2004. I do a number of different types of exercise as have a cronic spine injury. I run any where up to 14 km, power walk 90 mins, and other days go to the gym. I got given a bike a while back as the owner was too heavy for it. He ain't over weight just 6" and weights 100kg, and it is a ladies bike. Well we got this fixed up yesterday and I took it for a spin today. I made 7 km's over to my husbands grave, was feeling great so biked another 15 kms to town and took a small rest and biked another route home 16 kms. I am feeling pretty good about myself, as it seems quite easy. I have another bike but it's a heavier mountain bike and my son needs this when fixed as he is joining me on lossing some weight.
I love to chat with people so your welcome to drop me a few lines. kind regards Rena P.s I bike walk and sometimes run when I get alarm calls at work. I clock up around 15,500 if on foot daily.

Hi everyone!
First let me say I feel like an impostor. I don't ride! But, my husband does and I am his trainer (I am studying to be a PT). He love his mountain bike, but also has a road bike for training.

He rides 5 days a week and we have just started strength training 3 days a week. I love body building, so this is is the one area I know, but I need to learn more about his specific needs. I get him to do most of his work on a swiss ball or bosu so that he works his core lots. He thought pilates was girly, but he's learning to appreciate what it does!

Thanks for letting me "listen in".

Hello everyone. I'm glad this group is here. I'll be taking my bike north this summer.

I miss biking and the fitness and shape of me when it's a regular part of my life. The season is very short here. It's below freezing today and we've had a few short snows so the roads are only clean temporarily.

Some hard-cores here use snow tires. My hybrids are OK for rough roads, but not for snow unless I've kept with it. Too many variables.

Still, it's about time to set my bike on the porch.

It was a long winter and I gained 10 lbs.
Lots of work to do.

Hello team!
I'm Cari and I'm new! I have always been a fan of bike riding. I have a franken-bike now (a bike made of many other bikes) but it gets the job done. I would like to participate in the 2008 mile challenge but I have no idea what a realistic mile goal would be. I don't even know how many mile I do per ride. I usually guage it by the hours and/or minutes. Any help with that would be appreciated. I usually ride for an hour a few times a week. I havn't had the bike out this year yet because the weather has been horrid here in the midwest. I plan on riding my bike to work as soon as the weather gets warm(er). Thanks for any help and I'm excited about the new team!

I joined yesterday and forgot to introduce myself. So here goes. I am an avid cyclist. I have been mountain biking and road cycling for years now. I am happily married to my hubby of 30 years (he loves to cycle too). We have two kids in college. Our son will graduate this June and our daughter next June.

I work in a middle school as a library media assistant and building tech so I have my summers off and ride ride ride!

I try to do at least 2 big rides over the summer. This summer I am riding in the RAMROD (Ride Around Mount Rainier In One Day) 154 miles plus over 10,000 feet of elevation gain.

I usually ride 12 months a year (mostly mountain biking during the wetter winter months and road cycling when it warms up. But I also mix it up and ride some epic mountain bike rides in the summer with our mtn bike club) but this past year was bad for me. Surgery plus bad weather forced me off my bike for quite some time. I am now attempting to regain my cycling fitness and lose the 15 pounds I gained this winter.

Hubby and I hope to do some traveling when the kids are finally out of college. I would LOVE to do a bike tour to Tuscany Italy!

Pedal On! And looking forward to reading everyone's posts in this forum!

Sue

Hey everyone! Just joined this team today!
I live in Belgium and am a college student, so I ride my bike every day to and from class, about 20 minutes total. Then there is going to the store too and such. I have always enjoyed riding/cycling (as well as watching it on TV) but the problem before was that my bike was not very good and did not have any different speeds.
Now i bought a 21-speed 2nd hand bike, and it rides a lot better! Still trying to figure out how to change speeds since there are 2 different places to do it instead of one!
Hope everyone is doing well, and keep riding! with spring here the weather is perfect! or should be better at least!

Hello! My name is Jen. I am a 29 year old mother of 2. Tyler is 6 and Isabelle is 2 1/2. I have been married to my DH for 7 years. I just bought a bike with the idea that I would ride it to and from work toting the kids behind me in a carriage. Well, I rode the bike by my self around the block and it wasn't easy at all. I was actually very surprised and embarrassed to find that when I was done ridding I could hardly breath and I felt like throwing up. It actually scared me a little. I never thought it would be this hard to ride a bike. So much for riding to work with the kids. I guess I will have to build up to that. I want very much to ride my bike with ease. How did I ever let myself get this way? Will I ever be able to ride to work with the kids? I really hate feeling like this.

Thanks Ladaun. That's about what we came up with for calories, but I do think it's probably more with the mountain biking. Too bad my weight loss isn't showing it. I find the harder I workout, the hungrier I am. :( So I'm hoping this website will help me get all that figured out.

Hi Charvonne. The guy at the bike shop is right. Part of it is getting used to it, but I used a seat gel pad all last year and that worked great. Switched to biker shorts this year. I'm too self consious to wear the spandex version, but to my relief they make bike shorts that look like regular shorts! It took a couple rides to get used to having all that padding, but now I love them. Beats the alternative. Good luck and happy biking.

Hello everyone new to the team and bike community. Did my first ride Saturday of 4 miles. It felt good getting outside and riding with my daughters, however what do you do about a sore tookas...guy at the bike shop said I will just have to get used to it - any suggestions?

I have biked Sunday and Monday as well and plan to bike today. Joined you guys so I can get new ideas and tips on what is good as far as working out on a bike.

good morning sunshine, That is a lot of miles! My calorie counter say that the calories burned on my 12 mile ride in 1 hour is about 650 calories! I hope that is right. Mountain biking probably burns more, not sure. Welcome to the team!

Hello everybody. I just joined Spark a couple weeks ago, but the more I look around here the more motivated I'm becoming. I am so thrilled to find a cycling team!!!

I live in Colorado and my husband & I started mountain biking in April of last year. We love it. I find it hard to determine how many calories we burn, but have a feeling it's lot! I logged just under 1500 miles as of the end of November last year and then the weather turned on us. Just starting to get out again and longing for warm days everyday.

thanks for being here!

Hey everyone, I just joined SP and since I'm an avid Road and Mt. biker, this looked like a great team page to join. I typically bike 4-6 hrs/week and consider myself a decent rider that doesn't realize my full potential due to the extra weight I carry. Especially on the hills! My goal is to lose 25lbs by October in preparation for the ICEMAN mt. bike race in November.

Good morning everyone, I'm losebabylose. I've decided that today is the day. I once was very active, but I slowed downto a crawl. Now I've gained so much weight that I hardly recognize myself. I'm hoping that Sparkpeople.com will help me.

Spring is here! Ya think? It is supposed to turn back to winter today. Utah has 2 seasons winter and summer. I am up for summer right now.
We did get a ride a few days ago. I am ready for summer! Have a good one.

Spring is coming, EvilPanda, even to MPLS! I live there, too, and it's been a long, cold winter!

I've done more riding in the past but have been off the bike for a year or so. I've lost weight over the frozen months, so I am eager to greet Spring and get pedaling!!

hi. I'm new to sparkpeople, but not to cycling. I've been riding ever since I had to get a 'real' job. In the winter months, in MPLS, I try my best to commute, but a winter full of days below 10 degrees F foiled my plans.

My goals this year are to drop weight, because climbing is super hard at my weight right now (compared to my weight 2 years ago. GRR.). I'm hoping to ride consistently throughout the summer, race at the velodrome, and thusly, not suck as badly this fall during cyclocross season. Maybe I'll attempt another road race and a couple of crits this year. I'll definitely try to hit up more summer alley cats, since those are fun, cheap, and in the city.

But mainly, right now I'm hoping the crap gets off the road, so I can take the new road bike out for a spin.

Hello I am new to this group.
I thought winter was receeding here in Michigan, but alas 5-6 inches of snow on Friday and through the night. Went on a nice snow hike Saturday though!

Get out and enjoy life

Hi Robin and LSWilkins and welcome!

Robin - Never using the car is wonderful. Where do you live? Are you in a large city or small town?

LSWilkins - Wow, riding across the country. I hope you write in your blog about your experience as you work to achieve that goal. I bet it will be an amazing journey and one that I would love to follow. There are several experts on this message board so feel free to ask questions early and often as you progress.

It has been 15 years since I rode my bike to work etc. and 70 lbs. later!! But My husband is getting back into biking and I want to ride with him across the country before we get too old to do it! He used to race when I met him, almost 30 years ago!! Time sure flies when you are NOT having any fun!!!

I am up to a 4 mile ride and not getting sore so I am going to increase my rides when I get out again. He has an 11 mile ride that he is trying to get me to go on. I think that I am finally ready and no more excuses!!

I look forward to your coaching, comments and encouragement as I overcome my self to find my spot on the road! Or trail as we will also be doing the Mountain Biking thing for the first time!!

Winter is finally receding here in Iowa and it's time to get back on the bike! I didn't do much on my indoor trainer but I'm hoping to pick up where I left off last fall...never using the car!
