I have a route to work mapped out but have yet to attempt it. I work at 7am and it's still dark at that time. Before I attempt riding in the dark I'll try to get more used to riding with traffic. I live in the burbs where there isn't a lot of traffic. I drive the freeway to work each day.
Recently I did purchase a really cool light for my bike. I enjoy spending money on cycling.

I know what you mean about the trainer. I bought one three years ago used it for around two hours and don't even know if it's still in the garage any more.

I live in a pretty small town, but am close enough to be able to ride into the city and get some good mileage on those streets. My work commute is also all city riding. They are good compliments to the country rides I do when the weather is better.

It is very nice to have so many different types of riding available. City, path, country, waterfront. It 's biking nirvana.

Hi, Rookie...

The inside/outside problem is one that everybody seems to share. It's just not the same...!!

What I do to kill the boredom is to turn on the TV in front of my exercise bike and watch one of my favorite shows. There are also some good videotapes/dvds of old bicycle routes and races out there...

Good luck with the Ohio ride if you make it...

Your New York ride sounds a lot easier than the ride I was thinking about in May here in Ohio. On Mother's day weekend they have a bike tour that is 100 miles on Saturday and 100 miles on Sunday. My longest ride to date is only 35 miles. I'm thinking the 40 miles sounds about my speed. It's so hard to prepare for a ride when it's cold so late in the spring. I did just get a trainer a couple weeks ago, but for some reason riding in the garage just isn't the same as being out on the road. emoticon

Hey, Cape...

Sounds like an interesting event, hope you enjoy it. But don't count me in - I'm just not a city guy. I was raised in Wyoming, and even Denver is getting a bit too big and busy for me!

Looks like you're getting a good start on the same sort of weight loss I've experienced over the last couple of years. It can be a little tough at times. I enjoyed the additional exercise, especially once a few pounds had come off, but I really had to discipline myself about food - quality-wise as much as quantity.

But what you'll get when you get the weight off is worth it... More energy, a feeling of satisfaction, and a lot of friends and acquaintance you haven't seen in a while who don't even recognize you any more!!
Take care!!

Leonard

Today I registered for the www.bikenewyork.org/ ,Five Boroughs ride in NYC in May. Although the event is a really fun 40 mile easy ride, the day before is the highlight. Spending Saturday in Manhattan, walking over the Brooklyn Bridge and having lunch in www.frauncestavern.com/index2.htm a tavern built in 1762, completes a great weekend.

Over the years we have talked about meet ups with different groups. Some work out, some don't.

Anyone want to join in?
