Hello everyone! My name is Pam, I am 56 and I have been a SP member since 9/2011. I browsed and even posted a few times but never got active here until I reached my goal. At that point, after posting on another's post I was invited to a 'Transition to Maintenance' team here on SP and decided to join the forum to keep the motivation going while trying to maintain. Maintenance has been a priority in my planning and process since I began losing weight this last time. I am planning on making this the LAST time I have to lose 100+ lbs. (This is my second round--20 years apart).
Back to the Frugal and Simple living . . . I love being with like minded people and believe that this forum reflects my values and lifestyle choices to some degree. My husband and I were married in 1977 and were part of the 'back-to-the-land' movement so prevalent at that time. We planted a garden, raised most of our meat and eggs--organically. We've bought our wheat from a local farmer and ground our own flour and made our bread products. We can, dry or freeze our produce. We even tried the outhouse and drawing water from a well, although after about 3 years decided to add plumbing and running water and a bathroom to our home that we built ourselves. Most of the house was built paycheck by paycheck--it took us 10, highly committed, years to do so. In the end we had a nice 2000 sq. ft. house and NO mortgage. We borrowed just enough to pay off the piece of land we had bought a few years earlier, dug a well, put in a septic system, added plumbing. It took us only 5 years to pay off the loan. It is not always an easy life, but the rewards have been worth it. When I see a new generation embracing our same values, it is an even more precious reward.
Someone coined the phrase of "walking softly on the earth" and that has been my mantra for these last 36 years. I have made it a habit to consider most of my actions and how they affect me, my family, other people and our planet--in word, action and deed! My husband and I believe in using less, reusing what we can, repurposing and recycling.
I am looking forward to learning and sharing periodically, and hope to make new friends along the way. Glad to be here.
