Hi,

I'm new to this team too. Welcome and hello to everyone else.

I'm not new to living simply/frugally. It is a happy lifestyle.

Good morning everyone - I'm new to this group, and happy to read some of the posts. I retired last April and it's been so challenging!! As I summarize it: "bad marriage, bad divorce, no pension, no assets, four kids (who are great!) including one son I live with who has schizophrenia". We're pooling our limited resources in order to manage, and it's working out fairly well. We both lose some privacy, but we talk about it when it seems to be a problem to either of us. As for frugal, I'm still finding ways to pinch a penny wisely and with a sense of humour too! Ahhh, beans, my favourite new friends!! Of course, the great outdoors is my free entertainment, along with spending time with my friends - who needs a latte when a simple coffee will do!?! Right?? Cheers, - Celia

emoticon New Members..oh yes it is a real challenge learning how to live the simple life. I have been spoiled throughout most of my life :) and now I live alone with limited income so I am learning alot of new things. The hardest part for me is eating the correct foods when $$$ are short. I know I will get it through my thick skull one of these days.
Have a great day friends..Smile along the way helpsemoticonemoticon

Hi, I[m new to the team. Actually joined because I have 4 and wanted a fifth to get that extra point each day. This one looked interesting, because my husband and I live quite frugally. Not sure just how I will fit in, but will read some of the postings and see.

My name is Martha.

Good suggestion with Monster.com, Lesa - I've heard positive feedback about them.

Judy, Judy, Judy! Is it any wonder that an exasperated Cary Grant had to intone your name not once, but three times? I have visions of you roaming the streets in search of quarters while your husband, dressed in not much more than a loincloth, delivers you lemonade!

And just because I wear that hood doesn't mean I *am* one, lol!! emoticon Oh, the visuals you evoke, you naughty girl!

Well what we can do is pray. We will get by Lesa, I just know it. I am glad you got a laugh. We have to stay positive. I just told my daughter too. That is our strength as we are helpless in this economy. But when you least expect it something will come up. We can support each other. In fact Sara has a whold closet of beans so we can just go to her house. Try on Monster.com My daughter has had good results with it. I'll have to check with her to make sure. Hugs, Judy

Judy, my husband worked in home construction for about 10 years and made doors for a building supply wholesaler for 11 years. It's hard to find any jobs related to housing right now, so he is looking for whatever he can find.

I've been a SAHM the past four years. Prior to that, I worked in publishing for 20 odd years (some very odd!). I have a part-time job in the field of adoptions, but it's contract work, so it's not a steady income. I'm looking for something, too.

Thanks for your witty post; you made me smile.

Thanks Sara but it is you that is the delight.
Lesa this too will pass and we will get through these times. If not, we just rob a bank. No problem! lol Why do you think Sara has a hood? She is the ringleader! On a serious note. what does your husband do? Monster.com works sometimes.
I tried to get mine to be a male stripper but bikini pants didn't fit. So instead I am going to walk the streets looking for quarters and he is going to deliver me lemonade so I won't die of thirst.
Hugs, Judy

You will just love Judy, Lesa! She's such a sweetheart! emoticon

And Judy...the frugal approach does get easier with time. I started with this stuff around 2001, and once I saw how much we could save, I've pretty much stuck with it. There's always something more to learn, too. Back in the beginning, I checked out lots of books from the library on this, one of my favorites being The Tightwad Gazette, because Amy Dacyzcyn's money-saving creativity is a delight to read about!

We're definitely going to get through these tough times, I know. Our parents did, Judy...and Lesa's grandparents probably did, too. But it's a wonderful thing that we've all got each other!

Hi Judy! Thanks for the encouragement. Together, we can learn to be frugal and love it. LOL.

Take care,

Hi Lesa,emoticon Hi Sara!!
I am so sorry your husband lost his job. Things are pretty tough right now but with faith and prayer we will get though them.
My husband is sick and out of work and I am as well.
I am in such poor condition I don't think I will be able to go back to work. So I guess I should learn to be frugal. It just isn't in me. I am going to try to learn. :) Hugs, Judy

You are so right. As a former English major, avid reader and lover of words, it's the word that bothers me more than the concept. I've never, ever been anywhere close to being a "high maintenance" girl. I love finding bargains and prefer eating simple meals at home to dining out (most of the time).emoticon

emoticon Lesa! So glad to see you here!

I'm so sorry about your husband's job. We live in such difficult times right now; this would've been unimaginable, say, five years ago. We all live in fear of that axe nowadays :(

I smiled when I read that the word "frugal" doesn't excite you much :) It does sound a little "tightwaddish," doesn't it? But simple living has a lot of appeal, plus it sounds like an easier way of life. I really do prefer that approach or view!

It's so nice to have you here :)

I'm new here, too. Like Judy, I haven't always been the most frugal person, but I need to learn because my husband just lost his job. The word "frugal" doesn't excite me much, but I am very into learning to live more simply. I'm so glad that sparkpeople has formed groups like this one to help us all get through this recession. It is so nice to have support!!

LOL!! Judy...you know you're in trouble when you want to be me when you grow up! Be careful what you wish for! I didn't know about this WW beans and rice side but hmmm...yeah, I can see how that would "harmonize" nicely with the McDonald's chicken nuggets...if you get my drift!

Maybe not all that frugal, but you know it's the beans that count!
