Thanks! I'll check ebay!

I have class tonight and my teacher is going to let me use the one I am thinking of purchasing. I'll play around with it and decide.

Hi, Shona!

I really enjoyed your story, so I told it to my husband. He suggested that you might consider using the name of a star as your dance name, because many stars have Arabic names. He did stress that you need to check out what the name means -- for example, there's one that means "North Scorpion Claw" and another means "Armpit"! It may be that none of the star names sounds feminine enough for you, but I like the idea. After all, a star is sort of an island in the heavens, eh?

It is the mind that makes the body.

That's possible! Though at present, my muse is throwing design after design at me. Where she's planning on developng Samyra's story is beyond me, but she's got five new bellydance costumes plus a few other not-bellydance costumes onto paper, colored and all!

Except for this one I'm drawing now... she quit halfway through. I have a top, but nothing for a skirt!

That's so true Felicia. One of the best things about the persona is watching the story evolve. They take some interesting twists and turns as they evolve.

And Sarah, Samyra's evolution may be your story! Your muse may have an interesting way of working.

E-Bay is fabulous. Also, Google belly dance hip scarves. You'll find them in every price range imaginable and every single style.

on ebay LOL. I just got some awesome harem pants,
super comfortable, very nice quality for 99 cents a pair. They have petal skirts and all kinds of accessories on there too, for cheap. I just bought
a 24 karat gold plated necklace, with matching looong earrings, and the piece that hangs down on your forehead (like a bindi) for 20 bucks.

Hi everyone!
I am new to this team and to belly dancing. I signed up for an 8 wk class (already completed by 2nd week) and we will be learning a candle dance. I am SO excited! My name is Cassandra and I live in PA. I don't have any hobbies and really haven't tried anything new so I decided to pick up belly dancing. I love it thus far! Quick question, where do you guys buy your hip wrap/scarves? My teacher is selling them but I wanted to shop around and price other outlets. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

All right. I haven't invaded yet. So here I am, newly named and all:)

Everyone knows me as Sarah. Plain old boring Sarah. Twenty-two, sales representative, dresses fairly conservative. Goes to church weekly. Likes to sing and loves Frank Sinatra. Likes to read. Loves to design. Catches herself daydreaming and doodling when she oughtta be working. Mom to Jonas. Girlfriend to Charles.

Now the alter-ego: Samyra. She was supposed to be the main character in a new story, but as soon as I got her out of my head and onto the paper, my muse disappeared and the plot went with her. Typical. So I have this little snippet of information about Samyra, and I'll share it.

She's young; early to mid 20s. Thin. Long wavy black hair; blue eyes. Her costume is a metal halter-style bra top with heavily beaded cloth cups with clasps where ties would be. The skirt has a wide metal hoop around waist that clasps at the back. Three four-panel cloth skirts in varying colors and lengths are attached to it. The longest layer is dark green, almost hunter-green. The middle layer is a red-brown; somewhere between brick and mahogany. The shortest layer is sea-green. She drips with jewelry from head to toe. There is a chain headpiece that circles her head with a chain running down the part in her hair, which is always worn down. In her left ear is an ear cuff with chain to peirced stud. There is a peirced stud in her right nostril. A metal choker/collar with decorative chains with jewels adorns her neck. Each upper arm has an armband that matches the collar, and a matching wrist cuff is on each wrist. She has a slave bracelet on each hand and a ring on her right pinky. Her navel is pierced, with jewelry chain encircling her waist. On her ankles are cuffs that match the collar, and she has a slave anklet on each foot. In addition to the jewelry, she is marked. On her right eye is a tattooed "Egyptian" eye decoration. There is a tattoed snake coiled around her left ring finger between top two knuckles, a tattoed paisley on top of left breast, and a tattooed sun around navel.

I don't know her story yet. I know what she looks like, and I just figured out her name a week and a half ago. I know she (like so many other alter-egos here) is enslaved, but what I'm not certain of is where.

My Alter Ego is Mistress Eventide. Eventide is an old english word to represent twilight or dusk. the time between day and night. That magickal time when things are not always as they seem. Mysterious, yet calming. The most brilliant colors in the sky are just before twilight. My name, "Melanie" means darkness, blackness, or evening, and twilight is my favorite time of the evening. The "mistress" portion has to do with part of my spirituality, and does not mean I am into S and M LOL!!! It has to do with some Egyptian culture I have recently gotten involved with.

Patti, you may be in NE Texas but isn't it wonderful that through the internet you can make friends throughout the world? I've met in person members of my long term (8 years) on line BC support group called Dancer Cancer at dance festivals, Faires, and even at LA International Airport. (She lives in Canada, but had a lay over between flights.) In October I plan on driving to Arizona to meet another member. Who knows, you may attend Rekkassah (spelling?)West one day and meet some of us then.

One member of our SparkTeam actually is a student of a gal who once was a member of the troupe I belong too. It's such a small world.

Hope to meet some of you soon.

I'm jealous - all you people are close enough to get together. Not fair! I'm stuck here in NE Texas all by my lonesome - Well, except for Leslie511, who has seemingly disappeared under her workload.

Faatima - brilliant way to go with the name. An no, you're not too late. This is an on-going thread.

Well, hope I am not too late to get in on the fun of name-explanations!!

I chose Faatimah. You will recognize her as the favorite daughter of the prophet Mohammed in the Muslim religion, or as the name of the village in which the Virgin Mary made the sun circle in the sky in the Catholic faith.... Each a good reason to choose, the name. However, those of you who know your history will find that I have simply taken the real name of a famous dancer named "Little Egypt" and given it an Arabic spelling....

I find it a great way to introduce the history of the dance to people. Most people (non-dancers) won't ask "so, what is the history of bellydance?" They will, however, ask "What on earth made you choose that name?" or "Where did you come up with that?" And then, they are hooked!!

For Peace Day on 21 September...
I will meditate on lovingkindness. I will spread the joy of dance. And smile, man....its free.
What will you do?

For those on this site who are not from California: SLO is San Louis Obispo, an absolutely charming town on the coast.

I've never been, as I have not done any Tribal style dancing, but now I want to after reading the posts and viewing a video on YouTube. My son is getting married in Los Angeles that weekend. emoticon Sad to miss this event but happy emoticon for my son and future daughter in law.

Anyone planning on attending Ojai Pirate Faire next month? The troupe I belong to will be performing Sept 22 & 23. I always have fun at this faire. It's not that long of a drive from SLO or Long Beach emoticon . Guest dancers are often welcome to perform with us. I just hope the Zaca fire doesn't get too close and damage the park.

It was Tribal Fusion and Wendy is nearly finished with getting everything together for this December. Its so amazing that something so incredible happens in our small community. I just love all the talent that comes here to perform and just really hang out and chat.

Monibelly.....that was at the Tribal Fusion Fair last year....in slo.....love slo....I was there and am going again this year, we should try to hook up...! I ran into a few of my SLO friends this past weekend, that is the next big fest for us tribal sisters.

And I have to say it was the sweetest and most touching moment of the fest.

I also have to agree, I was one of those that hung out in the smoker section, saturday detention...all the time...lol....the only one with hot pink hair with black tips...lol...this was the 80's, not a lot off Goth kids back then.

Maybe I should have posted with a warning - "Funky Mood On Board" or something like that. Ever have those days where one minute profound is popping out of the box and the very next minute all is silly??? Could be sleep deprivation - or oxygen deprivation considering the ragweed here.

But yeah Monica - I do know about that daily mask. Only, on the adult level, it's put it on or do dastardly things to the evil co-worker. LOL

Me... profound??? Pro round maybe!!! I love the mask/hide reference... its kinda how I see myself as a teacher sometimes. There are days you just feel like crap, but my four-year-olds... they didn't sign up for the crap teacher... so I don the happy preschool teacher mask and perform.

And that dang Rachel... just sweet. Took a workshop, not being the least bit tribal and what an amazing teacher. I felt that I got my tribal on that day!!!

Wow, how profound. Do the very things that allow us to feel sassy also provide the mask we need to don/hide behind in order to be free enough to let go???

For the record - valedictorian of the HS class in a very small school, had Mom on campus (which was actually very cool), twirler, newspaper editor, too many others to name. It was kind of the edge of the geek squad without actually being in it. Guess I had a strange setup. LOL

Kudos to Rachel to have used an embarrassing moment to make other women feel good.

I, as of yet, do not have a "dancer's" name. I keep waiting for the perfect fit. Its funny as I read the alter egos of everyone, because I do know that I am not the same person when I dance. I could never get up there... but the spirit dancer in me can. Rachel Brice performed something totally off the cuff last year here locally. She ended up getting her spiked shoe caught in her costume and we caught a glimpse of the "real" Rachel. But what she said was afterwards really touched me, because it went something like this... "Who was not accepted in high school? Who was part of the geeks, freaks or nerds?" So many of us clapped in agreement. "Well, bellydance is a forum for all of us to be accepted. Its not about who does tribal or cabaret, folkloric or goth... we are all family here." Of course she gave a big "screw you" to her former high school. But its true. This dance form allows us to explore who we really are and take that chance no matter what size we are or what we look like. Hey... nothing like a pair of false eyelashes, wig and a hip scarf to make a girl feel sassy!!! emoticon

Prettyshelagh, I googled the name of your teacher, bacause I was curious if she was related to Nadia Gamal. How sad that a beautifu, talented, woman should pass away so young. She was only 33. My prayers are with her children.

I think using her name, perhaps with a slight variance, would greatly honor her. Some possible suggestions: Isha, Isharan, Isharana, Mishara, Misharan.

Shona - your given name is divine. It's definitely exotic enough to use for dance.

And yes, it MUST be Shimmy McCurves! That's just TOOOOO good!

PRETTYSHELAGH honoring your former instructor is a lovely tribute. I'm so sorry you lost her.

Hi dancers... I do not have a dance name either. I will be coming up with one soon! my wonderful teacher was Ishara Gamal... I would like to honor her somehow... she passed away this past spring. I guess I will see what comes to mind.I have never really performed in public, except for group events in a big group. it was great. Hope to keep working at my dancing anyway. emoticon

My best is yet to come.

Shona,

I like your given name...at least as a base on which to let your imagaination work. I agree with you...just add a middle eastern or exotic twist. Maybe you could find out what the Persian, Egyptian, Trukish, or Arabic word is for rose or flower, or find an adjective in these languages that would describe a flower and add that to Shona.

Good luck and have fun with your self naming.

I've been thinking about dance names a lot recently, as I'm intending to perform a lot more over the next year or so, and maybe you ladies can help me out with this?

I feel as I'm a relatively new performer, the way to go is something quite humble and similar to my "real" first name - Shona, but with a middle-eastern/bellydance "twist".

Accordingly I had my heart *absolutely* set on the name "Shoshannah", which is (a) close to my real name, and (b) works with my usual nickname of "Sho". I also love the meaning of the name - it's Hebrew for a rose (my favourite flower), or just flower, generally. As one of my "trademark" thangs clothing-wise is floral prints and particularly rose prints, AND as the rose is a symbol associated with my city, Glasgow (because of famous art deco designer and architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who I adore), it seemed the absolutely perfect choice for me.

Problem? There's another (very, very lovely) dancer and bellydance costume designer in my city already using the name for her business. Poo. And I've never been able to find any other name which even VAGUELY strikes a chord with me for the purposes of dance/performance..... two other possibilities from online bellydance name lists I've found that I quite like are below:

Samira/Sameerah (sah-MEER-ah)
= one who narrates stories in the night/ story teller/entertainer

Shabanna
= belonging to night, 2) young lady

The other thing I thought about doing was just using "Shona" as it's a reasonably exotic name in its own right.... my parents picked the name following on from an old tradition on my father's side of naming girl children after Scottish islands, they literally sat with an atlas and tried out names of all sorts of Scottish islands which might work as a baby girl's name - I'm lucky that they found the Eilean Shona before they came across Muck or Egg islands, lol!

a

Anyone with any suggestions for a possible dance name for a poor Scottish soul would be much appreciated!

In other "dance alter ego" news, I've decided to do a burlesque workshop at the end of September and one of the tasks in the workshop is to invent a "burlesque name", and so I've been idly thinking through a few ideas to be starting with:- so far I've come up with

"Shona Legg" (tee hee! a teacher at school used to call me this! )

or "Shimmy McCurves", which I REALLY like, as it's got a bit of bellydance reference and a bit of Scottishness to it, too.

Any other suggestions for "burlesque babe names" ladies?

I am a Lobby Girl. They call me Chelle. We are a an Art gang, a band of gypsies, roving pirates, & friendly witches with a loose grasp on reality. We build worlds and personas as a hobby.

There is Fleur DeLise, the pirate queen of eleven seas. She rules over a small archipeligo and fights the good fight against oppressive tyrants. She was banished from her home by twin sister.

Also ther is Helvette, the foul witch queen of seven castles, She is Fleur's twin sister. She rules her island kingdom from towering mountain peak. She is wild, dark, and hedonistic.

Then there is Anaraheli, or Nar for short. She travels with a band of gypsies travelling the world in their vardo. They found her when she was very young washed up on the beach. She dances around her family's camp fire and at the great festivals. She sometimes dreams she is a mermaid.

Welcome Miss Toni (et al). Have you done short solos as part of your troupe presentations? My troupe does an introduction piece in which each dancer does a 30 to 40 seconds solo. We often do a "competition dance" during which 3 dancers first do about 1 to 1 1/2 minute solos. Each dancer then repeats a solo of about 45 seconds...then they all dance together. These are great ways to get over the "nerves" of dancing alone.

My pant size has stayed the same all Summer emoticon . I've been too busy working and working on 2 vacancies I have in my rental properties to even try and follow a diet. Last month I gained 5 lbs while working on an out of town property and sleeping on an air matress emoticon . No refridge meant eating out most meals. New tenant moved in on Saturday so I'm back home and back on my modified Atkins. Down 2 1/2 lbs since Sunday. emoticon Now I MUST get down before the Fall weather sets in. I threw away all of my size 18's & 16's for cool/cold weather and only kept a couple size 14 pants. Right now I'm still in 16's or 14's with elastic waists. Gotta shop for my mother of the groom dress by November too.

On the subject of Alter-Ego's: Accompanied my closest friend car shopping yesterday. (We met 12 years ago through dance.) Introducing ourselves to the salesmen became too long of a process so I abreviated it to parts of both our names: hers: Sharon + mine: Mary became Shar-Mar (pronounced share- mar (as in Mars). She said, "That sounds like a dance name. I've never had a dance name." I replied, "Well, you do now." Now she just needs to work on her dance persona...and her alter-ego is on it's way.

Well Mom/Toni/Miss Toni/Melita - you sound about like the rest of us with all those names. Fits right in.

Your classes sound great. Bet it's a blast working with the little ones.

We'll add your 2008 solo to the list of things for us to work toward. We need goals, and working as a team helps.

Hmm, which is my alter ego?

Hi, My name is Toni. I am a wife and a mother of two (plus various friends of my two that call me "other Mom"). Um, I have a neurotic black cat named Midnight. Oh, and I wear glasses. (This will be important later on)

or

Hello, My name is Miss Toni and I am a belly dance teacher. I am slated to teach 1 of each below listed classes at each of the two dance studios owned by my bosses; a kids class ages 5 to roughly 11 or 12, a teen class up to age 15/16 and a Mother/Daughter class. I have been studying belly dance for 10 years and will begin my 3rd year teaching in September. Miss Toni also wears glasses. I also dance with a performance troupe (and that leads to.....)

Melita Om Abi, or simply Melita. I have been dancing with Mystic Movement for 5 years and have yet to do a solo, although I hope to in 2008. Melita is a visually impaired dancer and often needs to be led on and off darkened stages by troupe mates, simply to be warned of anything on the floor that could be tripped on. (I do not dance in glasses and refuse to wear contacts). Melita means honey bee, Om means mother of and Abi is my daughter's name. But, the meaning of Melita becomes more obvious in my favorite online game.....

In Ultima Online I am Melita deGermain, second wife to Roland, co-wife to Marisal. Marisal is an angel (literally, wings and all), light, good and so sweet natured. I am the darkness to her light, mouthy, sassy, cranky and a kick butt warrior fey, yet with a sweet side, protecting those weaker than me and loving to fly amongst the flowers like the butterfly my wings suggest. Just don't make that me mad. *L*

Alianora, I have pretty bad nueropathy (nerve damage)throughout my body, and it hurts to even walk, yet I dance. It's the heel to toe vs toe to heel thing. although I have not walked that way very often,as it can propel me forward quite rapidly, I think I'm going to do it more often. I'll get there faster, and in less pain. Who cares that people will stare? Shouva sure doesn't.

I've had that happen my older brother. My brother and I went to Las Vegas earlier this year and people would look at me funny when, in talking to my brother or my friends, I started slipping in to a spanish/english accent or when my own southern accent got extra thick. I love to see the look on people's faces when I change from southern bell to english lady or turkish dancer. It also is a shock to them if you suddenly go from walking heel to toe to walking toe to heel.

My son says he can tell when he receives and email from "Shouva" vs one from "Mom". Without even signing off as "Shouva" he knows "she" was the author of the email, not mom. The styles of writing and sentence structure are even different from one persona to another.

I have had people (strangers) look at me kinda strange when I may suddenly go into my "Shouva" persona, Russian/Rom accent and all. I'll do this to make a point, or to get a rise or laugh out of them. It does get their attention, that's for sure.

In our group - especially among the drummers - it is very rare for anyone to be called by a given name. It also bleeds into our everyday lives such as work, etc.

How true, Nandini/Patti. Out chosen dance names and personalities become so much a part of us. In my dance troupe/renaissancwe faire group two of our past members were NEVER called by their given names.
