That was very nicely said Raven. The names we choose are used for dance, but they become such an integral part of who we are.

Well here goes, ya'll are gonna think I'm crazy.
I have two SCA personas per my knight and my father's request. My number one that everyone knows is Lady Alianora Blackwell. A lady in waiting to Queen Catalina Infanta of Spain.circa 1515 to 1520's.

My second that only my friends see is Ali the moondancer. A Turkish slave dancer. Inslaved to the Ottoman empire's Sultan's harem.Every romantic's dream. my friends laugh and tell me that she should fall in love with the sultan's eldest son.

ok so that's it for the SCA, here's my role player/ dancer. Talyna Moon or Lya. well actually she has lot's of stories so I'll let you decide what I tell just ask And I'll tell all.

My mundane is much less interesting my name is Allegra and I do my school from home. My name comes from the poem by Longfellow called Children's hour

Alianora~sqeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!~

Thanks girls....it's actually an ancient name taken from some well known Amazon warriors. When we chose "persona's" for our group, we all chose Amazon names since they personified the strong, beautiful women we all were. :) Xari was actually shortened from Toxaris (pronounced, as I understand, Toe-zar-es), which if I remember means "archer"...which I also am. :) But I thought that Xari sounded much prettier....so it was shortened. :)

Yes, I like Xari too. Another name that is unique. You should not run into another dancer, gamer,or SCA participant with your name.

May as well come introduce here too....
My alter has been Xari for quite awhile. I used to play with a re-enactment group (Realms of Avalon) and we started a group/house called House Oleander....basically a group of strong women out to promote being beautiful, strong, capable women. :) Most of us already danced, a few were trying to learn. So, I had my Oleander or dance persona...Xari.

You're thinking along the right lines. When you least expect it, the right one will more or less jump out and bite you. Listen to the way different people say different names - something will eventually please your ear. Heck - I even used this method to name two of my kids!

Hi everyone. I do not currently have an alter ego - although I can feel one wanting to come out!, and I am having a really hard time coming up with a name that suits me.

I've looked at a lot of name sites on the internet, but have had no luck.

Any other suggestions on how to choose a stage name - although lately I've been thinking the name chooses you.

:)

Any input would be appreciated!

My best tip for beginners is to remember to ALLOW yourself to be a beginner. None of us fell out of the womb doing bellydance (well except probably Isabella, Suhaila's daughter).

Give yourself time to first BE COMFORTABLE with the movements, then work on perfecting them and learning to actually DANCE with them. This doesn't happen overnight, and if you expect it to, you will get frustrated. Enjoy being a beginner. Don't rush it.

Second, take it SLOW!!! If you learn a movement very slowly you will almost always learn it in its proper form. Sure, you may WANT to do a lightning fast shimmy, but what good does it do you if you can only do it that fast for a couple of seconds before it falls apart? Take it slow. When you master a movement slowly, you'll be able to speed it up with FAR fewer problems later.

Think of your body in two halves. Keep the lower body, from your navel on down, rooted to the ground like tree roots. Think of all your weight being in your lower pelvis. Keep your upper body lifted up and away from the lower body. Think of lengthening your spine away from your pelvis, like you have a big balloon attached to your head pulling you upwards. That will help you learn to separate the body's halves and truly isolate your movements.

On our way to Mordor.

If you've got a Ross - Dress for Less store nearby, they've usually got a few belly dance DVDs on their shelves for excellent prices. Those are good if you're just getting into it, because you don't have to spend a fortune until you figure out what you like. In the beginning, you'll want something that emphasises basics while preaching good technique.

Keep in mind, too, that nothing beats live instruction, so looking for a teacher in your area would be a great idea.

In the interim, there are some fairly decent instructional pieces on YouTube and ExpertVillage.com

Okay....
#1...practice..lol...no really, woman that have been doing this for years, still practice, almost daily. Maybe get a good drill work out to go by...what you feel you need work on the most, do drills everyday, even if it is just for a bit, they help.

#2....Make sure you lift your rib cage up and out...that frees up the hips and isolates things for you...it takes strong upper abs, so that is just something you work on, I finally have a nice ribcage lift...after 4 years...lol...umm...practice.

Okay, so my first question is...
What is the number one most effective and helpful tip you have for a beginner like me?

And my second is...
Is there any secret in particular to isolating your muscle movements? For example, what's the most effective way to keep your shoulders from moving when you're doing a hip drop or any kind of hip movement?

Hi, there. I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm brand new to SP, and just as new to bellydancing, but I'm loving it so far. My name is Elisha, and I live in NC. My DH, Shawn, is a Marine in Iraq for now, and we're proud mommy and daddy to a beautiful little girl, Reagan (13 mos.)

I'm anxious to get to know people and to learn more about bellydancing, so if you have any tips for a newbie, pass them on!! :D

I've made up names for other things in the past, but I don't think it is a strong point for me! This requires more thought and further research...

In the meantime, I'm going to my first ren faire this Saturday, which happens to have an ARABIAN NIGHTS theme, including a belly dance contest!!! I'm excited!! Unfortunately, not only am I a rank beginner in the art of Raqs and therefore completely unpossessed of the skills to even THINK about competing, but I also severely strained my calf muscle Friday night, and can barely walk, let alone dance. :( I hope to be better by Sunday, in time for my regular BD class. (Fingers are crossed!)

There are not always another dancer with a name. My teacher from about 12 years ago made up her name, Jenza. Her daughter also has a name that no one else has, Elayssa (the beautiful and fabulous dancer from Desert Sin). My dance name is a word that I learned from Jenza. It is a term of endearment that Elayssa's father used for her when she was little, "Shouva". It translates from the Romani language as something like, " my little dearest one" or soemthing to that effect. Elayssa's father is a Rom, (or gypsy).

So you can feel free to make up a name that sounds interesting or choose a word from a language that can describe you. I know a guy from SCA and Ren Faires who's chosen name for these venues is "Adaven". It sounds period and from an olden time, right? Well, it's Nevada spelt backwards. He was wearing a sweat shirt from Nevada State University and read it backwards in a mirror one day.

So get creative with your name...but remember, Shouva is taken.

Shouva Vanusha of Tribe Roman Morga Renaissance Gypsies

That's really cool about having a "mirror" personality and finding a name that fits.

Don't worry that there is another dancer with that name. There's ALWAYS another dancer with EVERY name. If it bugs you, add a second name to it.

I haven't discovered who my alter ego is yet, though I'm thinking about the name Amira. (However, there is already a bellydancer named Amira, so I may go with sth else.) I like it for 2 reasons: it's the feminine form of Amir, in honor of Amir Derakh, one of my favoritest guitarists; and because it sounds like you're saying "mirror". I find I mirror people unconsciously, whether it's sayings or small gestures, to being talky with a talky person or quiet with a quiet person. I haven't figured out if this is good or bad, or even how I feel about it. And who knows, maybe it's perfectly normal!

** Is your alter ego having more fun that you are?

It was, until I remembered that it's ALL me. I've actually started consolidating... You'll notice that I mostly go by Romilly... it's my surname in the SCA (which is where it came from).. when people started calling me that, I added it as my art and design signature (I was originally Gretchen Goodfellow, and my cousin, also an artist, is George Goodfellow, and we both signed stuff Goodfellow or G. Goodfellow. So I stopped. He's older. He had seniority!)

Last month I moved from being Zahra to Romalie, which is just the way everyone seems to spell Romilly when I leave them to their own devices.

So I guess I'm fewer people now than I used to be! Allira, now? She's just weird. :P

Romilly, don't you mean, "What do WE win?" (multiple personalities, you know). emoticon

Ooooh! what do I win?
Other than a confused husband, who complains that ALL my friends have too many names.. and I use them all interchangeably. He can't keep track of who's who. LOL

Alter ego, huh... Which one?

The dance ego - Zahra Simin, now Romalie. Very much me. :)

The legal ego - Gretchen. Works as a technical writer. Used to be painfully shy and retiring. The nickname Romilly's taken over everywhere but at work. :)

The art ego - G. Romilly Mueller. Textile and mixed media artist and needlework designer. www.stitchingwithashimmy.com Yup. I'm working the bellydance into this, too...

The SCA persona - Martine deRomilly. 12th century French widow, attended the crusades in 1147 with her husband (who was subsequently killed) and Queen Eleanor. Teaches medieval/renaissance dance and medieval embroidery. Picked up raqs sharqi while in the middle east. Yes, in the SCA I dance in bliauds instead of middle eastern garb. If I ever go back to playing (lack of time) She's about to morph into Martina vonRuppa, wife of landsknect (cannot for the life of me remember my husband's persona name... he picked it and then promptly we didn't have time to play!!) Which means German renaissance clothing NOT as easy to make or wear as my 12th century garb. emoticon waah.

The Amber gaming ego - Allira of Amber... if you play and want to know, I'll tell you about her offline (Amber Diceless roleplayers are an obsessive lot.) She's actually the reason I became less painfully shy. I did a lot of "what would Allira do" there for a while. emoticon

My alter ego is known in Alaska and Ohio as Yasmin a'Naar, transliterates as friendly fire, don't get too close boys or you'll get burned. emoticon

She is very playful when dancing for a mixed crowd, but very serious when performing the sacred fire/fertility dance. Her element is fire, born under the sign of the scorpion, her animal spirit is the Tiger. All in all, beautiful at a distance but deadly in close quarters emoticon .

Yasmin's earth bound host (Tess) is fathered by a descendant of Ireland, her maternal family is Italian/German. She married into a French/ German family.
Where's the emoticon of the melting pot??? emoticon

Naturally embracing diverse customs from all the ancestors, the term "cultural pilgrim" found its way into her soul. The endless crying of the wind haunts her, calling her to visit far off places, especially Asian cultures, whether it be the Fertile crescent, the SubContinent, or as far east as Japan ...

The rhythms, music, and beauty of those foreign lands awakened something deeply hidden within that slightly cloistered child, and lo, Yasmin a'Naar came forth.

She is bold and fierce, where I am afraid. She is proud of her stretchmarks and muscle control, where I am amshamed to even wear a bathing suit. She gets to wear gorgeous sparkling adorments with her fine sheer garments, when I wear conservative, yet flattering street wear.

If Yasmin a'Naar could live in my plane of existance 24/7, she would quickly tire of chipping her nails, and cleaning the house, so she is glad to come for a visit every so often. emoticon

I enjoy life, in moderation, and chocolate, well ... that's a love affair!

I like to dance with swords, fire, and finger cymbals, not poles or gogo cages (grimace).

Why did Patti know that the Gypsy's story would be as convoluted as Nandini's????? LOL She's quite inspirational, and Nandini knows just what it's like to kick the body's butt and make it go.

These stories are great ladies - thanks for sharing, and c'mon Rissa - spill it! We'll help you flesh that persona out, but first we gotta know who she is!

Hula dancin' belly dancer - love it!!

Isn't it amazing how those alternate personas become such an integral part of who we are as time passes?

My alter ego is Shouva Vanusha, a Russian gypsy from the Renaissance period and a member of one of the 3 families that makes up Tribe Roman Morga Renaissance Gypsies. TRM performs as small ren Faires in Southern California. Although the body which Shouva must share with the mundane known as Mary Margaret has many ills and problems it is the spirt of Shouva that keeps the body going. Shouva often drives the Vardo when Mary Margaret is too tired to make it to a faire 150 miles from the shire within which they reside. Shouva will take no guff from anyone, Royal, Mundane, or authority. She will just as soon spit in their face and then place a curse on them. When Mary Margaret feels like giving up due to financial and health problems, Shouva makes her get up and get going again. Shouva is a driving force, the push that Mary Margaret needs to keep on going.

The members of TRM often will read email posts from Shouva, not from Mary Margaret. Shouva's grammar in not correct and her English is poor....but.....

"What you say! Shouva not speak correct? Shouva speak English most beautiously! Shouva must again make the Mary Margaret pay attention. Without the Shouva she would be lost on side of road, never to finish life journey. HA! Shouva is good, strong influence. Yes? Yes!"

Shouva Vanusha and Mary Margaret...two women in one body.

Actually, I am using bellydance to try to reconnect with my alter-ego! I vaugely remember her; strong, confident, sassy, quite a bit more fit, and not afraid of much! Willing to dress up, stand out, and take on challenges. She was someone who *liked* being in her body and was proud of it. I think she went into hiding sometime in college due to an abusive relationship.

I'd like to find her again! Now that I'm in my 30s I figure I can learn bellydance *just for myself* and without the pressure that was on me in younger years. I'm hoping with dance, exercise, medicine, and maybe therapy I can find my "spark" again!

It's so lovely to meet you Aziyade. Meri nam NandiniSuhana, an Indian-born kidnapped dancer in the custody of the drummer known as Shaymonyu. Since my kidnapping, we have recorded the births of the Three Sons of Shaymonyu - Sameer Hanuman, Vasfa Dina, and Dunnah Do Dat. Nandini is part of the traveling gypsies performing under the banner of the Dream Harem with music provided by Yulssuvy Pa-Gu-Ba.

In her spare time, Nandini directs Hawan Hindustani, assists with direction of Indo-Tribal collective, and performs with the Inspyre Fire Trybe.

Believe it or not - most of the time Nandini is what keeps Patti sane! LOL Maybe that's because our group has such a wild sense of humor - or is it because Nandini keeps stuffing Patti back into the box????

I'm not quite sure I have one alter ego...well, I kinda do but she hasn't exactly gotten in touch with the dance just yet...more of a dabbler.
Her name is Tivia. We met when I had this fascinating nightmare where I/she were bound in a cavern by an alien who was going to consume us. I wrote that part of her story in the days following the dream and that's actually how I ended up dancing (years later)... but she really has had a hard time coming into it...she never struck me as the shy type (that would be me!), but she hasn't really wanted to be named when dancing. Is that odd enough for you? LOL

*bounce!*

My alter ego is Aziyade, who is a sexy Turkish-style red-headed bellydancer who's desperately in lust with Neil Gaiman, a drummer named Carmine, and a crab fisherman named Capt. Phil.

Or wait, is that me?

Performers, be it dance or otherwise, bring something new to the table - a legitimate case of multiple personalities. So those of you that have a second persona, introduce us to that side of yourself here.
