Greetings and Salutations!

I started bellydance classes in the beginning of this year and loved them, but the class time recently changed and I can't make it. So I am seeking out new classes and friends. My dance background was jazz (a LOOONG time ago) and burlesque (a couple of years ago) and I want to build on those foundations as well as bringing in the new skills. I created the alter-ego Amethyst Kiss for a burlesque performance and since have shortened it to just Amethyst. I use that now for anything Dance related and in some communites I belong to.

Why Amethyst?
- It's one of the transformation stones. It opens up the third eye, brings clarity, and facilitates change. It can range from the palest shade to a dark deep vivid purple.

After 5 years of dancing, I finally decided on a dance name at the end of last year: Kalibasha. It's a play on the word calabash since I'm a gourd artist (among other things) and fits in with my online nickname of Pumpkin.

I've tried learning to bellydance twice... giving up without really trying to ever learn. But I have her pictured in my mind. It's how I feel every time I fantasize about naughtier times with my fiance, and how I make myself feel During those times.

As a quick explanation my legal name is Sarah. There's 2 other Sara/Sarah's in my family so I changed it up with something I found in a Tamora Pierce book: A goddess.

She oozes sexuality and just has to cast a glance to get the whole rooms attention. She looks gorgeous with or without clothing or anywhere in between and has her man hook line and sinker. She feels confident in every situation from speaking in front of a crowd to giving a sexy lapdance and isn't worried about what jiggles, what doesn't look toned or smooth or any other personal body problems.

Her name will be Sarra. The girl I've been trying to be my entire life and WILL BE.. soon.

Walk to Rivendell: 458 miles.

Hello Fellow Belly Dancers!

I haven't exactly named my alter ego yet, though I have tossed many ideas around in my head, nothing has just felt right. But her personality is strong, feminine, passionate, graceful. When she dances people watch.

Some day a name will just show up and I will be like, "Yes! That is her name!"

Hi My Fellow Sisters of Belly Dance,

I am so happy to have found this team! I have been fascinated with belly dance for over 10 years. I worked up the guts to give it a shot about 10 months ago. It is so amazing! I love it! I have even performed in a show that the studio where I take classes holds twice a year! What a rush! With that being said, my alter ego is, "Tygress"!

The name is not a traditional Arabic, Turkish, or Egyptian name; however it is significant to me. When I dance, I feel bold, sensual, strong, and graceful, and I feel the name "Tygress" embodies that!

Again, it is a pleasure to meet everyone!!

Be Blessed,
Tygress

These are all great! This may seem strange, but I haven't even started training in belly dance yet and I already have an aler-ego for myself in my mind. I tend to do that when I watch certain styles of dance/performances that I dream of doing...

Anyway, she doesn't have a name, but she is a gorgeous woman who encompasses all of the confidence, mystery, beauty, and well everything that I wish I had in myself. She is the woman who enters a room and everyone turns to look and simply must know who she is. When she dances, she is hypnotic. She casts magic with her eyes and stirs the spirits with her hips.

Yeah, that in a nutshell...LOL :)

My alter-ego took a few years to emerge. Her name is Ophelia. I was looking for a name that defined, but didn't constrain, me or my interests, but also made me feel beautiful and graceful. I can't walk two steps without tripping, but put some music on, and you'd never know it.

I don't have any alter-egos defined yet... but the idea is intriguing. I've tried to reinvent myself before by choosing a new name, so I can pretend to be someone more confident, but nothing feels "me."

Someday, the right name will come, I suppose!

I am Halimah, the Egyptian word for...well, something...I think it's grace or something nice like that. Neither of us has a very good memory! We dont' remember routines well, either, but we don't care, we just meander along, doing our own thing, we meander to the beat of our own drummer! She thinks we're both very sexy, althogh I know better. I allow her to have her way, and just prance around as she pleases, dressed in a way that I would NEVER dress in public!

Alter-ego? Well, I don't know her true name yet, but in my opinion she's the sexiest thing to walk the planet. She's the one I see myself as in my head, and then get completely disappointed when I look into the mirror and realize she doesn't materialize externally. She has a very old soul. Literally. She's been reincarnated several times and though she knows of her former lives, she very easily adapts to her new surroundings. Strangely enough I'm not sure I even believe in such things, yet there she is. I am probably the complete opposite of her in nearly every way. She's confident in who she is and what she does and doesn't care what others think of her; she realizes it just doesn't matter. She looks similar to one of the Vargas pin-ups. She's much older than that, but she prefers this style.
Dancing is her true passion. I think it was forbidden in her first life and so it gives her that much more excitement when she dances now. It is truly mesmerizing to watch. Every life since the first one she's been a dancer of some sort.
She's a very classy lady. Most say she's very exotic (probably the only thing we have in common aside from our coloring).
I'm still trying to figure her out. I feel more like her many times over great-granddaughter than a person describing an alter-ego. She takes care of me and keeps me out of trouble.

About myself, I am mild-mannered, shy, not very confident, and a bit hyperactive. I work as zookeeper, interacting with many exotic animals, including my favorites, snakes and lizards. I try to learn to belly dance, but no one will see it as I am very shy about it. I have an alter ego who makes herself known from time to time, changing my primary interests, before moving on to the next grand plan! While she has always been around---I've known of her and her 'behaviors', but I usually don't acknowledge them---she only recently allowed her name to be released. She is Daciana Andraste, of Romanian/Celtic descent. Her name Daciana is derived from a Phrygian word for "wolf", and Andraste is a Celtic Goddess known for being an invincible warrior.
Daciana is a green witch, although a novice, who studies the use of herbs and the earth's power for her craft, she dances to show devotion and receive strengh. She, like her second name is also a warrior, learning different martial arts and gaining strength there, as well. Daciana is proud of her sexuality, letting it show in her dancing--she is not an experienced dancer, but she certainly feels like one!
Perhaps, I will allow the alter ego out occasionally--we might have great fun together!

I am Sakura, which means Cherry Blossom in Japanese. While I am not Japanese, or of any eastern decent, nor does it have anything to do with Belly Dance, I fell in love with the Japanese Cherry Trees when I lived near Seattle. I was searching for the final touch to the tattoo I wanted to go down my spine right about the time the cherry trees started to bloom. Washington can be painfully dreary in late winter and early spring. Until the Cherry Trees Bloom! I get terribly excited to see them, a glorious puff of white or pink against the dreary grey horizon. They are everywhere and wonderful! Then they “shower” petals everywhere, like fairy snow, just like in the japanimation cartoons. My friend saw my joy in them and suggested it for my tattoo.
So I started researching. The Chinese name Cherry Blossoms the flower of love, of feminine power and beauty. The Japanese believe they represent the ephemeral or transient nature of life. That life is beautiful, even in its death. The beliefs of both cultures struck a cord in me. So now I have Cherry Blossoms showering down my spine from my shoulder blades to my tailbone, I have taken the beliefs to heart, and use the name to remind myself…I am female, I am beautiful and powerful, a warrior, and I must live life to its fullest now, because it will not last forever!

My alter ego is called "Thais." I know it's Greek, and i've seen a few different possible meanings ranging from 'beloved' to 'headband, usually the ones worn by courtesans.'

It's the name of a French Opera i enjoy about a greek dancer and courtesan, as well as the name of a famous courtesan who was a contemporary of Alexandar the great, and later a queen of Egypt after marrying Ptolemy I.

I chose the name because i admire the concept of being a beautiful, enchanting, and intelligent woman who uses her talents and wit to gain power among men.

I played around with many names the first few years I was dancing. Nothing every really struck me as the "right" name. But one thing they almost all had in common was that they all had meanings related to fire.

Then my troupe leader sent around a link of middle easter names and I spotted Souzan which is Persian for Burning Fire. It is also close enough to my real name that I won't forget to respond if someone calls me by it out of context. Oddly several other women in my troupe choose names similar but not exactly the normal name.

Good Morning Ladies! I have been belly dancing off and on for about six years or so. My alter-ego is Shefali, which is Indian for flower (specifically, a member of the orchid family). My name is Heather, which means flower, so it's really just a different form. I am excited to be here!

I don't have one yet. I asked my best friend her opinion, and she thought I should go with Roswenthe, which is the screenname and gaming name I use most often. It's Gaelic based for "white rose". I dunno yet. I have a lot of gaming names - Vayl, Carynna, Katerina, Indigo....

I'm still kinda trying to understand the whole dance name thing.

My real name is Gia, but it's pronounced Zhia. People have a really hard time with it, they like to throw out the hard G when they say my name. So my "alter ego" is the correct pronounciation of my name. Zhia. I have a really hard time calling someone by a stage name when I actually know their real name, I feel weird about it. So it's only natural that I pick something that's not to far off from the original.

Since I started out in Tribal Belly Dance in a troupe I never had a dance name. Our turbans made us pretty inconspicuous. After dancing for some time and going into other styles of belly dance I had a couple of instances where a dance name was needed. So here they are... When I joined a theatrical belly dance company here in Alaska (Echos of Middle Earth) I had to come up with an alter ego for ren fairs and theatrical gigs so I turned myself into Maurelle (it is elvin for Dark Elf) When I was doing some urban gigs I called myself Absinthe. So that is it for alter egos... mostly I go by Amy :)

I came up with a bellydance name! Actually I learned what it was. A couple months ago I learned my great grandmother was a bellydancer in Lebanon, so my bellydance name is her first name: Fahimi. Fahim means "scholar" so I assume that the extra i just makes it feminine. :-)

Everyone chooses their name in a different way. Some folks just have something in mind that they like. For me it was a process.

I looked at lists of Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Armenian, and Greek girls names (Google baby girl names). I eliminated anything hard to pronounce, I didn't like the meaning, or that didn't sound pretty. Then I asked a Middle Eastern friend to read the lists of finalists to hear the correct pronunciation.

Good luck!

Hi Gang... On the subject of Alter-Ego's --- I've been Davina for over 25 years now.. Wow.. My alter ego is old enough to join the army, buy a round of drinks and vote! Back in the 80's when I started dancing, it was clear that my very English name Dawn didn't have the smooth soft feminine quality needed for my new career. Davina, is a reworking of my last name, Devine. Davina means Beloved in Hebrew... You know you've been dancing a long time when your luggage is monogrammed, your mom calls you by your dance name, and your DBA allows you to accept checks... I'm even my own domain... www.davina.us... Happy Costuming! ~ D

I'm a belly dancing, costume making, book writing, pinterest obsessed research fiend! If you wanna know more about me, my books and projects you can visit my website.

So I am VERY new to belly dancing so i hadn't even thought about a name but after reading everyone's posts and doing some research I have a short list of names I like.
Shemei - Egyptian meaning desire
Mohana - Hindi meaning bewitching
Indira - Hindi meaning beauty
Lavanya - Hindi meaning beauty, grace
Nisha - Hindi meaning night
I really like all of these names but i think i like Mohana best, i think it really sums up belly dancing for me.

Oops! Sorry...I got excited talking about ATS.

About your alter-ego...what do you want to be, what do you want to project, who do you want to become?

To get naming ideas, you might want to try websites specifically made for girl's names...Muslim, Indian, Indonesian, African or even Celtic girl's names! There is no limit to your selection, and there are no rules as to what you name your alter-ego! In fact, 1 of my tribal sisters has an alter-ego with a Celtic name!

Good luck!

When I first started tribal, my mentor suggested I use the instructional tapes of Carolena Nericcio of Fat Chance Belly Dance. I found the teaching method easy to follow, and I really enjoyed watching the instructors dancing at the end of the videos. Also, Carolena Nericcio put out a tribal style combo DVD/dance book about 2 years ago. Although it is geared to tribal-style dance, it is labeled as a bellydance instructional book. It comes with paste on body jewels and a cheap pair of zils. I can't remember the price, but you would probably be able to find it through the internet.

I encourage you to find a tribe in your area. The tribe is about our connection to each other and the strength and power that we have when we are together so that when we are apart we can carry that strength with us in our separate lives.

You will have a really, really good time learning American Tribal Style dance!

AMBERHUDSON4,

Shira.net has a number of video reviews as does Tribe.net. Your library may have a few that you can check out for free to give a try.

Good luck!

I have been a dancer all of my life, but I was recently diagnosed with MS and things have gotten harder for me. I want to do this and I am going to do this. I am determined. I would be grateful if someone could give me a name to start my alter ego. I also need a bit of help starting my dancing. I cannot find any belly dancing videos to get me started and this is really a new area for me. It is something I have wanted to do for a long time, but I never got the nerve to do it. So here I am!

Gosh! You ladies have soooo much confidence! I want to get that feeling back again! :(

I haven't even tried to do any middle eastern or tribal dancing for 3 years now. Hard enough to do a maya or barrel turn and still try to look and feel graceful! I was large when I began the dance, and then got larger. Although my tribe tries to get me to return to the dance, I just can't bring myself to get into any of my dance costumes or tribal gear. The only thing I am comfortable seeing on my body is my turban or my hair jewelry. Even wearing my Kuchi necklaces make me feel fat.

But...I digress.

My alter-ego is Nur Ali Bhitor. Nur which is "light" which is for Helen. And Ali Bhitor from my great-great-Grandmother's name: Juana Ali Bhitor.

My dance name was kind of built in from my mom's side of the family.

Thanks! I was wondering. Have you considered altering the spelling of Manar to avoid the prononciation problems? Like maybe a more phonetic spelling like Manahr. Or maybe Manaar. That might help.

I don't really have an alter-ego. Probably because I grew up in a dancing family. My name, Talamar, means the palm. To my family it means oasis palm. That is probably due to a difference in dialect, I once went through a period when I wanted to sound more American and used the name Deborah, which means the bee. But I have become more secure in myself since then. And I no longer worry about having a name that people have a hard time remembering at first.

Skylark is my alter-ego because it is known throughout for its range for the song, which is delivered in hovering flight from heights of 50 to 100 m, when the singing bird may appear as just a dot in the sky from the ground. The song generally lasts a few minutes, but it tends to last longer later in the season and for longer periods and so demonstrate that they are likely to have good overall fitness. I thought that described me to a "T". I am older and wiser and more sexy and sensual now than in my youth. I am not dancing in public but I am learning and perfecting my craft.

I have several alter-egos, but other than "Madame" (my faux-british self) none have really told me their names. emoticon I'll have to start asking when they pop up.
When I drummed, my father called me Esme -- that's what he originally wanted to name me, but mom overrode him and I got landed with a name most people seriously mispronounced until the arrival of the Harry Potter movies. Now everyone just asks if it's really my real name. Really?

Esme would have been perfect for me, it means emerald -- my favorite stone and the color of my eyes....

Cheers!

I don't have a "dance name" as of yet. I currently just use my real name; I'v been going by it for three years, and when I tried a stage name out last year it just couldn't stick, and it was a disadvantage because people who wanted to see me at events kept missing me because they didn't recognize the name T.T" I'm looking for something to add to my name to make it more exotic (and memorable) but haven't as of yet...

I had a stage name once that no one could pronounce. Perhaps it was too long and perhaps it confused the brain. Abbisynnia. It no longer fits me, that name.

So, I switch out to a name that very few people can actually pronounce properly, but at least they don't butcher it. Dlinthe. It has no meaning. It was a word/sound/thing that wormed it's way into my head when I was looking for a unique email address that it was guaranteed no one else would have. And then, until I used it, it would not leave me. I guess it's my name, and who am I to fight that?

Just run the d and the l sounds together like you would with a gl sound and you'll be just about there.

Welcome, all of you!!!

Some of us here have developed our "alter ego's" to the point where they almost have a life of their own. (No multiple personalities here, right? ;-P)

If you have, too, feel free to "let her out" and speak to us directly! Look at some earlier postings, and you'll know what I mean!

But, above all, welcome!!! :-D

I don't do any dance preformances yet... as I am just learning. My first name is Jamie, so I think I will just add a "s" and a "n" in there to get "Jasmine" for the first name. My last name is actually Money, but I think I will change that to "Moon". Yeah, I think I'll go with "Jasmine Moon" for my bellydance name. I can use that name if I ever start doing Mehndi for extra $ as well :)

My dance name is GwynCara, which is Welsh for White Diamond. It took me a while to actually find a dance name. It wasn't until I went to England to visit a friend that it came to me to pick something from my heritage. I never felt comfortable using "traditional" middle eastern names. Being blond haired and blue eyed just doesn't say middle eastern to me.

Wheee! I love dance names! Naia is actually my stage name, my irl "day job" name is Natalie. Call me either. emoticon My troupe sisters started calling me "Little Naia" or "The Naia Child" ever since we started working on the "Evening in Transylvania" choreography a few months ago. We all got to be bellydancing vampires, and I was the "child" vampire.

I picked Naia because it's meaning has something to do with water, and seeing as how I'm a cancer and grew up on the gulf coast... it just kinda felt comfortable.

My dance name is Auzha, my teacher picked it out. My 17 year old daughter dances with me, she picked out the name Sanura, which you know means kitten. I was trying to find something that would mean "mother cat" but the word for cat is "mew".. I kept looking for something else that would be suitable, like the word for Lioness or similar but didn't really like what I found. I thought of using something that started with an "R" since my regular name does...but still didn't find anything that "hit" me. I went to class and told my teacher I was at a loss for a name and she said "OK, that's it, your name is Auzha." so no significant meeting, I guess through my dance I'll give Auzha a meaning.

I don't have a name, but I can tell you who I am.

Deep down, I am a Healer. Healer in all aspects of the word - mind, body, spirit, heart. I am deeply connected to the Earth and all things that inhabit it. I am not afraid of any animal, although I respect their power and the fierceness that they will protect their young. I love watching storms, and have never felt fear, even as a young child - although my heart will race with excitement.

Sexuality is a part of this Earthsense, and I can feel the music in my soul. It moves my body and my heart. It can make me cry with laughter or with sorrow. The heat and power of the Dance, of the untamed wildness within us... it is a heady drink, indeed!

I am also your Herbal Woman - your Wise Woman, your Teacher.

This is who I am.

My first solo performance is coming up, so maybe I should get on this stage name thing. My full name is already stage-name-like, although I've been thinking of going by Rose or something along those lines...

My stage name is Nabeeha. It was my great-grandmothers names. When I was little my mom use to joke with me that she was going to name me that when I was born. Little did we know that would be my name. I don't remember off the top of my head what it means.

My stage name is Halema (hah-LEE-mah). I was given this name by my belly dance troupe instructor. I was pregnant, and very huge when it came time to perform after months of lessons. I was told Halema was Egyptian for Earth Mother. I have always continued to use that name in my spiritual path, also. However, one day I was talking to a young man while I was working at Wal-Mart, selling phones. He was Middle Eastern. I asked him what that name meant in his country. He pronounced it differently ~ ha-li-MAH. He also laughed and said it meant "nipple". So, I guess Earth Mother *could* mean that as I did nurse all five of my children.... HAHAHA So, now I feel that I am developing that personality side of me, coming into the "Earth Mother" aspect of nurturing and caring and protecting like a She-Bear. (Grizzly is my Native American Animal Totem) I just have to work on the part of not intimidating. I still feel a bit awkward since being *Earth Mother* does not conotate the beautiful and sexy images of other professional dancers. So, I've tried a bit of Gypsy and I like that: I'm a bit more covered in the belly area since I have tons and tons of stretch marks and plenty of hips! hehe Plus I really enjoy playing with my tambourine instead of zils. I just can't seem to get the rhythm of zils too well. So, I am Halema, Earth Mother, Gypsy Tambourine Dancer. I can also read your fortune in your hand or in the cards.......

I haven't picked a stage name. I started thinking about getting one when we had someone here who was stalking bellydancers! Before that, I was content to use my own name.

I keep coming back to the the Manar (mah-NAHR), which means "lighthouse." However, I'm worried people will pronounce it "Manor" (like a large house) and that's the biggest thing that keeps me from adopting it as a stage name.

I have a character of who I'd like to be. Her name is Zephyra. Its Greek for wind I believe.
That can't be my alter ego though... I'm naming my first daughter Zephyra.

My alter-ego is called Jamila (ja-mee-la). I don't remember what it means. My instructor asked if she could "name" us. I liked it so much I kept the name. (Some of the others didn't)

Upirygirl - I think it sounds beautiful just the way it is, too.

Thanks for sharing Sanura with us. She sounds delightful!

My alter-ego is Sanura, pronounced sa-NOO-ra. It took me a while to settle on this name, which means "kitten," but once I found it, it just fit. I volunteer at the animal shelter with cats, and my specialty is "taming" feral kittens that have had little or no contact with people. I totally relate to them because at one point I was SO painfully shy, I was afraid of people too! lol. I admire my cats because they're so contradictory...small and adorable yet fierce, strong yet dainty and delicate. Sanura emulates these qualities. She's cute and coquettish but if you rub her the wrong way the claws come out. ;)

When I reach my weight goal and get my stomach as toned as I want it, I plan on getting a cat tattoo on my stomach. I'm hoping to do this while I'm still 30 since it's sort of a landmark year. It's one of my main motivators!
