In my Oriental dance career, I used to be part of a big dance company, and then two smaller ones. One of the things I really miss is "suffering" together.
By that I mean, the seemingly endless and exhausting rehearsals, where we would be dripping with sweat and almost too tired to move afterward. But somebody would put on a piece of music and we'd all together use each other's energy to draw from, and somehow we'd leave the rehearsal studio with a renewed sense of our own power, and of course a sense of sisterhood. We suffered together, and we strengthened together. Nothing could stop us.
Life isn't so intense now, but there are times when I finish a workout, or an online class and think "Man, I wish my teacher or AD was here now to say, "Again. Do it again," to keep me focused. Or I wish she was there helping me stretch, or pulling that last little bit of emotion out of me. And I wish I had the energy of the group, pushing me along to finish the choreography or the drill. It's so easy to slack when it's just you and your TV set.
One of the hardest things about the kind of solitary journeys that we're all on is simply that they're SOLITARY. We don't have anyone but ourselves pushing us. That's where the group can come in.
Maybe we can all learn the same choreography and work on it? That way all of our "suffering" can be shared!
I have some ideas, but if you have not heard of Shimmymob,com it's a GREAT idea! And the choreography this year is cute.
Otherwise, how about we learn a choreo from a video? I'm fine with whatever style. I'm Egyptian mostly, but still love a good AmCab routine, or even a Tribal style one!
Hooray for dance workout DVDs! I recommend checking everything available in the online catalog for your local public library. Not only is it free to try out, but you can check out EVERY dance and movement genre in stock to find fun new ways to move.
One of the best new-to-me workout DVDs I found last year was the New York City Ballet Workout, amazing! Just checked today while I was typing this and found a new one called Booty Bounce. Why not?
I used to take classes and practice at home but I've gotten away from it. Taking classes again no longer works into my schedule but I want the dancing back because it . I ordered a couple of belly dance workout dvds that should be here on Tuesday (one with veil and one with shimmies) and I am going to incorporate them into my workout routine but I would love some recommendations and challenges.

I would like to be connected to other people who like dancing as much as I do. I would like help finding videos of dance workouts that are easy and fun. I like to try a lot of different things. It would be fun to do something different each day.
