Wonderful!

Yes, it is *astonishing* how much dance technique is hidden in relaxing that rigid feeling. But "relax" is about the most useless advice there is, right? Hard work, totally worth it.

When I begged my Flamenco teacher for the answer to that incredible upper body strength, she said I could either practice arms every day, do push ups, or both. Again: hard work, totally worth it!

Belly dancing newbie, here! I took 5 classes this Summer and have signed up for an ATS and Fusion class this Fall. I love it! The hardest part has been that I feel so rigid and I am having to learn to use muscles in a way I never have before. It is also surprising what an upper body workout it is. I'm excited to find this team and I look forward to learning more and more about this beautiful art.

My life seems to be a constant cycle of beginning again. I just tell myself that I begin again every day...takes some of the pressure off. :) We can be so hard on ourselves, can't we?

I consider myself completely new to belly dance. I took three 6 week classes about 7 years ago but then I got very sick and my doctor took me off any and everything for a few months. I felt awful for a long time afterwards and just never got back into dance again. I have been missing it though. I had so much fun! I am going to be starting in my living room with videos for now. Maybe I will be able to find some local classes (I also just moved and haven't figured out what happens around here yet) after a while but to start with just me and my little ones (my daughter demands to wear my coin skirt haha).

Ugh - coming back is WORSE than being a beginner. I feel for you!

When I took my maternity leave I was only out for about six weeks, and even then it was hard to get back to moving the way I had because everything was so tight and my abs were still recovering from being stretched out so much. Baby and I walked every day and I started back with three sessions a week, not teaching for about 8 weeks, but that was because of the winter holidays too. When I finally got through the "up every two hours to feed" stage, I took a couple of ballet classes a week along with my classes and that seemed to help.

What I always told my students was to start slowly, just ten minutes of practice a day, every day, and they would see a difference in 4-6 weeks, and that was true for me too. It's even true now, that I've been away from ALL dancing for almost three years. I don't have NEAR the flexibility or strength I had before I retired from performing, but a lot of it is coming back. :) I'm okay with not being 30 any more :)

Hang in there. With daily practice (even just ten minutes!) you'll get it back :)

Enjoying every single moment I can with my husband and little boy!

It definitely adds its own form of frustration. I have actually stopped during drills to exasperatedly ask my hips and legs, "You used to be able do to this just fine - what is the problem now?!" But it also gives me faith that, because I was able to do it well before, I will be able to master it again.

What an interesting perspective. Do you think it helps keep frustration down, actually knowing that you have had the technique and can master it again?

I'm recently returned to belly dance after a break of about 8 years, so I consider myself a beginner all over again. My biggest frustration is my body no longer seems to want to do things it did just fine the first time around! But I'll get there eventually, the hard part is being patient.

It takes so much courage to relax into being awkward at something new and not get caught up in the frustrating bits. I adore my beginning belly dance students!

Well, not the newest ... it will be two years in about one month ... and I dance withOUT most of the bells and whistles, I do have a coined hip-scarf and some (inadequate) starter zills ...

I just LOVE belly dance. It is the only low impact dance form that positively impacts my health ...

Nothing wrong with using a DVD, but I am finding I have to up-modify my SharQui Level 2 dvd greatly ... yes, for cardio dance fitness ... even the series of classes I took recently were not of the Dance Troupe in Training type ... YMMV, but be forewarned ... even in a sophisticated, upscale neighborhood where others (I live the next nabe over) could afford and have previously afforded ALL the bells and whistles (priced out of the class, NOW; that had been a loss-leader sale deal I'd gotten in on) they went from out-zilling and out-veiling every belly dancer in the neighborhood; because Zumba exploded over there! The belly dance teacher is of Latin extraction, too!

Don't ask, I won't tell you any more ... lol ...

So far, I have 3 of the Bellydance Superstars compilations ... I do my own routines to it ...

I don't care if I remain technically a beginner - for now ...
