Hello, I am Kathy, just started doing weight machines. I have been a Yoga gal for a few years. Just isn't cutting it. I want to do free weights as well, but I am shy at the gym. It is crowded in the weight area, and I try to squeeze in as much as possible. Not sure yet what all to do to get the better body. I am 147, 5'5", age 53. I have a trainer in a couple of weeks, but I want to be independent ASAP. I need desperately to know how to use the machines correctly.

Do I work on a part of the body until fatigue sets in? Is that how it works? I have been doing 3 sets of 10 with the heaviest weights I can handle.

Cheers
Kathy.

Hey all! I avoided the weight room for many years, not realizing what I was missing. About 1 1/2 years ago I quit making excuses as to why I can only do cardio and assorted classes and jumped in. Now I love lifting and from time to time I like to see how much I can do. My goals are to lose fat and build muscle along the way. I like to mix things up by using different variations of the main exercises. Anyway, I am in my 30's, married, I have 2 kids, a few assorted family pets and that's me.

Howdy Everyone. I'm Cujo. I am originally from Houston, Texas and I am currently in the Air Force so I pick up and move every two years or so. I have always been interested in weight lifting and bodybuilding. While I enjoy moving iron, my goal right now is to cut some of this bodyfat away so I can see the muscle. I would like to get my bodyfat down to around 12-14%. Hopefully this site will help me keep my diet in check and keep me focused on my cardio. I'm looking forward to "getting to know" you all and learning and motivating others as much as I can.

Welcome Christine. I admire you for trying to compete. I know I have seen a lot of articles where they say we "older" women (I'm 51 so I can say that!) actually can do better in some instances.
Good luck with your goals!

Hello Everyone, my name is John and I like to lift weights (alot). I also do cardio. I made an agreement with my fiance' that for every hour of cardio that I do I can lift weights for an hour. Needless to say, I end up doing alot of Cardio. I weighed myself today though and to my surprise I weigh 236 pound which would not be too bad if I was 7 feet tall, however, I am 68 inches tall so basically I am like garfield the cat.

Hello all, My name is Kyllian, and I am Libby Montana. I am 35 years old and have been interested in weightlifting and bodybuilding for a long time now. I did fifteen years in the Navy and was unable to persue my desires for bodybuilding, and was actually released from the Navy because I fail to meet the physical fitness requirements at the time. Now I am persueing my goals of becoming a professional personal trainer and nutrionest, and to one day compete in a the bodybuilding sport. I really want to see the look on my shipmates face when they see that I was in good enough shape to be on stage. After what they knew me as, it would be a huge shock to them, either that or just the sight of me in that bannana hammock that they all wear... lol.

I wish you luck with your program and two weeks is a long way for beginners. Keep up the good work and before you know it you will see improvement. Feel free to ask us questions as well as others on SparkPeople: everyone is here to give and get support.

As for you protein intake. Post workout is a great time to take a protein supplement. I take mine with plain Soy Milk I buy in bulk from Sams.

It sounds like you have a good set up for your personalized spin excercise. I'm very fortunate in that my company provides a gym membership subsidy. They believe that healthy employees are happy employees and there is proven evidence that fit employees save us ALL money.

Good luck,

Hi, I am relatively new to SP and weight lifting... I committed to following the Body for Life program, based on the pyramid system of lifting weights and using HIIT for cardio, alternating these for 6 days per week, with the 7th day being a rest/free day...

I have been on this program for 2 weeks and it is a challenge. I have never been as disciplined about wt. training as I am now, cardio was never a problem for me. In order to see results I am finding that it will take time to find that perfect balance between diet/exercise... this is going to take time. I have been yo-yo dieting for quite awhile, good intentions, workout daily, but I have a ferocious sweet tooth... I am a breast cancer survivor and my doctor has advised me to lose 30 pounds, she says that studies have shown that weight loss and regular exercise, while it didn't prevent me from getting bc, will help to prevent a recurrence; they did their part, so now it's on me...

RE: Protein supplement: I just bought Designer Whey protein.. I am trying to keep my calories between 1400 - 1500. According to my weight, my protein requirements is 70 grams per day. Does anyone have any ideas how I can incorporate this supplement into my diet? I drink a protein shake after I do my weight training, is this ok?

Please excuse my long winded introduction... I hope to get to know everyone... emoticon dee

PS: Jay, I noticed that you spin... Since I can't afford a gym membership, I spin at home, I have a Schwinn IC Pro spinner and I use Spinerval, Robert Sherman and Johnny G tapes... I love it!!!

K-Lowe,

I take different types of supplements and have been doing so since Dec 27 (07). I finished two 6 lbs bags of EAS Whey Protein from Sams. Make sure the protein you take has BCAAs. One was chocolate and the other vanilla. I went ahead and got a GNC Gold Card (20% off product the first week of each month) and started using the GNC 100% Whey Protein. I have one serving with soy milk first thing from waking up and another one serving with soy milk pre-workout and another two serving with soy milk post-workout.

I also take GNC's Creatine Pills after my workout with OJ. The sugar gives an insulin boost and gets the creatine into the blood stream and into the muscles. Creaine helps draw water into the muscles increasing strength.

I also take a pre-workout Nitic Oxide supplement called N.0. Explode. It causes Vasodialation and other things ultimately giving you an incredible rush of energy and focus. It contributes to serious stamina in the gym and really helps you push for those extra reps to fatigue.

The last two are not recommended unless you are serious about increasing muscle mass. I have been doing it for just over two months and have made serious gains in both size and strength.

I'm thinking about adding an L-carnitine type supplement that aids in fat metabolism.

All these supplements definetely help but you have to be able to afford it! This stuff has been adding up. I also take other vitamins and minerals, fish oil and garlic.

So far I have made great strides in my fitness and nutrition goals in a short time.

Best of luck!
Jason

Hi everyone, my name is Rena and I have lost 176lbs. I will be honest I have been 306lbs, but since sept 04 I have lost all my weight and had a extreme tummy tuck to remove 35 cms of skin. I have worked my way up to running 8-14 km, and do regular workouts. Now I am maintaínced I want to go a little harder efter tone if it is possible for a person whom looks like a Chinese Shar-Pei.
I have gotten over never looking perfect, but I now wanna be the best looking chinese Shar-Pei and get more balance in the cardio and the weights.
cheers Rena

Welcome to bodybuilders, I am also new to the team. I am not sure there is alot of communicating going on, as I haven't received any email stating there is something going on. So to all the "Bodybuilders" on the team how about some stimulating conversation. Let's get this team as active as alot of the other teams. It is pretty quiet over here.

Can a team member drop a note here to let us newbies know what is going on within the team????

Huzzah! Hope no one minds if I hop aboard this team although I may lurk a bit for awhile to get the feel of things.

I was happy to see the discussion of the benefits of lifting for women, especially as they age.

I am of a certain age myself but I do not tell anyone what that is, so don't ask. emoticon I have considered myself a sort of bodybuilder for a long time and love weights and exercise of all kinds. Right now I am only lifting twice a week as that suits my goals and the place I am in now.

Karen, your pic is awesome! I want to be you when I grow up!

Thank you and you better believe it. Women are still so afraid of myths of lifting and if they only knew what it would do for them. Truthfully I think the older women have the greatest look, mostly because of maturity, but they are taking the stage by storm in many competitions.

Hi to the Bodybuilding Team - I have been taking time to see what teams were here and I definatey want to join this one. My name is Karen and I have already built my body. I don't have intentions of female bodybuilding but have competed in figure at the ripe old age of 52. I intend to compete in April 2009 at the ripe old age of 55. So I am body building either way we look at it. Check out my spark page and see where I am in my journey and I just want to continue to get even better. Look forward to being a part of the teams.

Today i tried an EAS Myoplex Protein bar and it was really good. I was shocked. I've been drinking the GNC Whey protein shake, orange cream flavor, and it is nasty but i still take it 3 times a day. I've been doing this since the beginning of the year and I wish I could see some results. I feel stronger but I don't see any changes. I guess I'm just impatient.

You can get 2 pound jars of protein powder at Target for around $12. Tastes pretty good. 2 brands. One's $1 more than the other and both are pretty good. If I had a Walmart closer I'd check there too.

Hi, my name is Kim. I am a 35 yr old mother of 4 boys. Ihave been interested in bodybuilding for a whie but never got serious about til now. We got my 2 oldest sons a weight bench for Christmas and I have been in the basement more then them. My 13 yr old is very athletic and this is something I'm trying to get him into because he is 6' and weighs around 175 and I am hoping once he sees how into this I am that soon he will also enjoy it as much as me. Plus if he gets into this more he'll be even more of a beast on the football field.lol I was wondering if anyone takes any type of supplements or drinks protien shakes? I've been asking this question in my other team forums and I guess nobody does. I'm hoping to get some input.

Thanks, Ryan.

I am currently around your weight class. I am 253 (as of friday) and trying to get down to about 215-225 with 10% body fat. I started tracking my weight and meals with SparkPeople at the beginning of January and have made great strides. In about a month, I've lost 13 pounds.

Please keep me informed on your progress.

Hello.

Seems this group needs some posts.

I'm male, 41, ~165 lbs, 5' 10", 32 in. waist.

My goal is to be strong. Specifically, I'd like to press 100 lbs overhead with either hand and be able to ride a bicycle century. (not simultaneously)

Happily married with 2 boys, 9 and 7.

Hello! My name is Teresa and I am in Snellville, GA. I am less than 20 miles outside Atlanta. I've been interested in bodybuilding for years and have dabbled in it here and there. I have never competed and I am not sure that is the direction I want to go, but I am definitely game for taking some sexy bikini pics when I get my body where I want it to be!

I am surprised there wasn't more interest on Sparkpeople and that it took this long for someone to start a Bodybuilding team. I am not typically one for posting on the boards but I will make an effort to check in and contribute as much as I can.

I am currently working on my new training plan. My plan is to lose 50 lbs of fat and get some definition in my arms, legs and abs.

Hello, my name is Damond Nollan and I live in Smithfield, NC. I am 32 years of age and very interested in bodybuilding. While I have not competed in any event, I would definitely consider it for the future. In the meantime, I am focused on sculpting my body.
