Good morning, I'm new to weight lifting. If someone would tell me a few years back that I would want to begin to lift weights I would have asked him what he was smoking. But I want to burn fat and add muscle. And I have to add muscles if I want to be healthy in my old age. I'm hitting the gym hard and heavy of late and enjoying myself. Yesterday I hit a new personal best for the chest press. So I'm on my way.

My Rewards!

1. When i reach 260 pounds, I'm buying myself a Civil War Book from Amazon.

2. When I reach 250 pounds, I'm rewarding myself with a new outfit.

3. When I reach 235 pounds, I plan on going skydiving. I also plan on shouting for joy in Praise to Jesus no matter where I am at.

Hello! I've been a member of Spark People since '09 but haven't been faithful with it until the last couple of months. I'm interested in building lean muscles and to get rid of this "pooch" that seems to linger and linger. I have a personal trainer and have made great strides in losing inches and I'm starting to see the muscle definitions; which I love. I want more! In the back of my mind I dream of competing but...right now, I need to stop making excuses & just do it!!

I travel a lot for my job so working out & eating right is a bit of a challenge but I'm trying to make better choices and I'm now bringing my Rip60 with me for the long extended road trips. I'd love to connect with anyone who have the same goals/inspirations/challenges as me! We can do this!!

Hello all! I'm newly committed after being gone from Spark for a loooong time. I found I couldn't find enough gym time with my Y membership, so bought a room full of weights and an elliptical. My goal is to actually use it all! I think I'm going to miss my gym time though....it always felt good to work out with no distractions, then leave. This home gym stuff may be a challenge...

Hello everyone. Ken here from Panama city, Panama. I Changed to a less stressful job three months ago seeking quality of life instead of money, bodybuilding wasn't actually between the things I wanted to do, but I got into a gym close to my office since I wanted to lose my beer belly. Started lifting weights just because I found cardio incredible boring. My body response was incredible after just one week, just as it were just waiting for me to do it. That motivated me to learn more about my body and the bodybuilding lifestyle. I've no personal trainer, just started reading and watching videos on youtube. So I'm interested both in advice, best practices and motivation by being part of this team. Have a nice weekend!

I'll be posting my progess at sparkpeople's blog, I'm also opened a page at bodybuilding.com.

Hi,
I have always been active and worked on my strength. I college I started lifting weights and have been doing that on and off (mostly on) since then. Never really able to get ripped. Recently I have paid closer attention to my diet and have been able to strip away some of the fat to show more muscle. Getting pumped now to build even more muscle and get leaner as well.
I live just outside of DC in Virginia with my wife and 3 kids. Other than lifting I also enjoy running, tennis and sailing. Want to try cross fit sometime. Would love to get back into racketball.

Bob

emoticonI've been on Spark People for a while but just recently got into weight training. I'm a beginner and still can't lift alot but I've started to see my arms and shoulders becoming more toned
emoticonand I like it! So I'm trying to step it up a little now. I hear muscle burns more than fat, lol, and I have about 20 lbs I want to get rid of. So I welcome input and ideas.

Ok about me, I'm married with kids. 30 years young. I like hiking, swiming, working out with Turbo Jam and my Gold's Gym. I love camping and doing anything and everything outdoors. I'm a recovering alcoholic... I used to do alot of naughty things in my past but I'm really trying to turn over a new leaf... I rekindled my hobbie to sketch as well as teaching myself how to play the piano and dancing. I really like rock music but listen to all kinds of stuff.

Please add me as friend. I also have facebook and I like playing at pogo.com [its fun to play and chat with ppl.]

Just stopping in to say hi to everyone. I'm new here at Spark. I was reluctant to join at first, since my goal at the moment really isn't weight loss, but to put on lean muscle mass. I am looking for friends who are into bodybuilding; mainly for inspiration, work out ideas, supplementation, and nutrition info! Well, I wrote an entry blog with most of my information, even on my workout - so check it out and add me as a friend!

Hi all!

Just joined the team and I'm glad to be here. My Spark journey started with tracking calories, and next thing I knew I was in the gym lifting weights. I had done some solo weight training before, but this time I knew I needed some help and hired a personal trainer to help me figure out a program, as well as show me the proper form on some of the lifts I had never done before.

The gym is a place I miss when I do not visit it at least 3 or 4 times per week. I miss the pump, I miss the challenge of mentally and physically pushing myself through those last, brutal reps that I have planned for myself. I LOVE the results I am seeing on my body, and I LOVE the increase in strength I have seen over the last 4-6 weeks.

I've stopped looking at my scale a lot because quite frankly I do not really care how much I weigh so long as the BF% is dropping and I am adding inches to my arms, thighs, etc.

One hour until I go hit the gym. 30 minutes before I take my Assault supplement. I'm psyched and pumped up to go, I may actually be staring at the clock and counting the minutes.

Great to be here! emoticon

Hi everyone! I just joined the team because I want to get ripped -- one of my friends on Spark says, "Muscle is the new skinny" and I couldn't agree more! I'm athletic and love outdoor sports and activities. I DON'T want to be one of those stick figure girls that look like they're about to break in half if you bump into them too hard. I'm a tough girl and I want to be strong and look strong, too. I'm going to start WT as soon as I find a good program for me. Good luck to everyone out there, I'm excited about this new challenge and the journey ahead. :)

Hello all,

I've been kicking around the last 5 of 10 pounds I wanted to lose and I'm done with that noise. I'm going to the gym, cycling, running, hitting the pool, blah blah blah with no real goal. Sure I've lost ~30 pounds in the last 18 months, but now what? So, while not really bodybuilding - I've decided that I am going to start powerlifting. My initial research tells me that I need to refocus my current lifting regiment before beginning a formal powerlifting training program. So, I'm here hoping to find tips, tricks, ideas, resources, and encouragement. Perhaps one day, I'll be cool enough to start the SP powerlifting group (I didn't find one - let me know if one exists). So ya, that's where I'm at so here's to pushing weight to push my limits! Cheers!

Hey everyone, I joined this team back in November, and then I got divorced, and I went through and found my original post and now I'm back! Yay! I want to start my DC training again, as it really helped me. Does anyone DC train?

Hey there - I too love lifting :) my challenge is I have set up a gym at home and need to get creative with what I have. Money and time being factors I LOVE my home gym. I have quite a bit of equipment, just no cables of large machines (leg press etc) I DO have dumbbells 5-45#; std bench; incline bench with bar stand and leg ext; plate weights 5-45#; Heavy bag/speed bag setup on a stand; resistance bands; 10# medicine ball; pilates ball; balance disk; treadmill; stationary bike....

Big enough room with floor mats and tunes :)

Looking for functional training ideas and what to do without cables (without getting bored. My goal is to maintain muscle tone, get my six-pack back and stay fit for good!!! I think if I really tried I could get "competition" build - my body seems to like muscling up, but not really a plan for now.

I am 34 years old and have a PhD in Human Nutrition - I work in weight management research primarily with obese adults. I also teach Nutrition at the college level

Hello,

I've been looking for a motivated team to join. I think I found it. I'm 31yrs old, turning from endurance events to getting massive. I've messed around with weight training for about ten years. Currently pursuing a Bachelor degree in Health and Wellness. My first ten username choices were taken. My next crazy goal is to gain about 40lbs!

Hi there!! I have always been interested in bodybuilding. I have always worked out, sometimes more than others. I am a SAHM of 5 (10,7,3 and 16 months old twins) and also have the privilege of home schooling! I started on the weight loss journey again just over 3 months ago. I still have a ways to go and keep coming back to bodybuilding! I'm just not sure if I can really ever do it- after 5 kids!? and the twins were a double c section! I'd love some advice!

Hi, I'm new to SP and love this site! My goals are to lose approx. 20 lbs of fat (1kg per week) and tone up the muscle that's underneath. I used to lift a lot and I worked out 5 days a week at the boxing gym as well, so I know I have a nice, firm body inside just waiting to get back out! I'm a vegetarian and don't eat tons of soy due to having breast cancer eight years ago, so my protein comes from carefully combining foods. Thanks for the support!!

Hi,
I have recently joined a gym, Planet Fitness, to get in the best shape of my life. I was on hiatus for the past decade due to being a father of 3 very rambunctious but adorable kids. I have always wanted to look and feel like a bodybuilder. They in my opinion, have this air of self confidence about them. They don't let life keep them down, when they get knocked down. When they are in the gym, going to war with the iron to carve and sculpt their bodies, it's just amazing to see the results of such dedication to one's dreams. The one recurring thing I've been seeing over and over again, is how important, your mindset is in achieving your dreams. I look forward to corresponding with people who are resolutely dedicated to being the best they can be. I need help working on creating and maintaining an iron will in sticking with something once I have decided to do it. This is what I want to teach my children. To find what they are drawn to and go for it with everything you got. As Will Smith's character in The Pursuit of Happyness said to his son, "If you have a dream, you go for it, and don't let anyone tell you can't do it." Of course, I'm paraphrasing for anyone who saw the movie recently, but you get my drift. Anyway, thanks for having me.

I recently posted the above message on the general boards. I just wanted to say hello to you guys.I have a lot of questions and I'm confident that they will be satisfactorily answered here. I'm pleased so far and look forward to learning everything there is to learn about this team and the website in general.

Thanks and God Bless emoticon

Alright!!! Took a little break from sp but now I'm back. Recently gained back all of the weight I lost, now trying to get back on track. My routine is HIT twice a week with a couple of days of cardio as well. Always looking for a training partner, anyone around Orlando, FL hit me up! I am currently attending The University of Central Florida earning my bachelors in sports and fitness specialising in fitness then plan on going to grad school to earn my masters. When I am done I want to be a strength and consditioning coach at a 5 star football program. I can't wait.

Hi gang,
I am 46 years old and am a total gym rat. I love the challenge of pushing my body beyond the limits. I went through some bad times for a bit and now am ready and able to get back in shape. I am working toward my CFT with ISSA. It is a challenge since I hate exams. My goal is to be in the best shape of my life.

Hey everyone, I want to be part of a proactive team, as I am losing fat while gaining muscle. I'm into light body buildnig, nothing too heavy. I want av-shabed back, chiseled six packs, the outer sweep of the quads, the half moon of the hams, and defined arms. While I know is going to take a LOT of work, I am down 25 lbs with 22 left to go as far as fat/weight loss goes. Then I will really be beelining in on sculpting. But I"m doing as much as I can with what I've got.

Hello Everyone, I'm new to this site and Forum. I'll just tell you what my goal is for now and we'll go from there. I want to gain 15lbs. of lean mass by 4/4/10. I believe this is reasonable goal as long as I'm watching my diet closely using the nutrition tool on this site. Happy Thanksgiving

Hello everyone, and thank you to JACKTHEKNIFE and ENIGMANUPE who welcomed me to the team when I joined last week.

My name is Lexie, just turned 29, and I have recently decided that I needed to start lifting heavier and eating clean to finally reach my goal of not just losing weight, but having a tight toned body.

I am no stranger to diet and exercise, I have loved working out since I was 16, but I also loved food. I have fluctuated so much throughout the years, but I have never gotten down to my goal weight: 135-140 in my entire adult life.

I feel like I work so hard and then ruin it, and have to start all over. I am so done with being fat! So I am looking for motivation and the right information to make sure I am on the right plan.

I have read too much because it seems like I have gotten conflicting advice. I need to follow a plan for my body; not just throw exercises together to make a plan. It seems that I've been doing the same exercises for 10 years - so no wonder I don't see the results I want!

I look forward to participating in the forum and welcome any advice. Hope you all have a great day!

Dropping by, saying Hi! Totally new to SparkPeople and of course, new to the team. I got into weight lifting three years ago, but school kinda got in the way, so I've been lifting on and off, on and off, on and off. It's really annoying since I'll lift for a month, then do nothing for two months (and lose everything...) and then lift for 2 weeks and gain some streghth/size back, then do nothing for a month and lose everything again...
I wanna get back on track and be able to lift continuously, so here I am :)

Welcome, Jarvistin. It's OK to have fat in your diet, in fact it's great to have fat in your diet. Here's the catch-- it should be mostly healthy fats-- think olive oil, nuts, and some dairy. A healthy diet has a good mix of all macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, and fats). I personally follow the 40:30:30 rule in which 40% of calories come from carbohyrdates (mostly complex ones found in fresh fruits and wheat flour), 30% proteins and 30% healthy fats.

Some recent studies have ever show that saturated fats can be good for you when consumed as part of a whole meat (the source article discussed steak directly). Some fats like omega3 and CLA have been show to speed up the metabolism and actually help dieters shed weight. Some food for thought...

Anyway, if you skipped over the rest of what I said, here are the take home points. Eat a balanced diet with healthy fats, complex carbs, and whole unprocessed meats. In fact, go with whole foods as often as possible, your body will thank you.

Every night, and every day a little piece of you is falling away. But lift your face, the western way, baby-- build your muscles as your body decays.

Hi everyone, I'm not new to SparkPeople, have been on here a yr+ this time, thought I would have lost the post-pregnancy weight by now in addition to being back @ 145 lbs, what I weighed once upon a time....

anyway, I have worked out w/JM videos, Jari Love videos and I have Taebo...I have tried various changes to my diet, sticking to none of them for very long; however, after going to the dr and finding out my cholesterol is screwed up, they has been incentive to get my food under control...I am now implementing the sparkpeople food log and workout log, and realize I have got alot of fat in my diet...I am counting calories and want to lose the weight, but I want to have a low % of bodyfat and not be just skinny fat...I want a healthy, toned body...I am slowly building a home gym from used exercise equipment and we'll see...

God carries me when I can't walk.

Fat (sorry to say) is the most calorie-dense food. And there are healthy fats that you can nosh on throughout the day to help bring up the calories, such as nuts and sunflower seeds (easy to carry around an munch on), Olive oil is good to cook with and add to salads, pastas, etc., cheese is high-fat (although with cholesterol problems, you don't want to go overboard with it). I can't even imagine eating that many calories in a day! When my trainer made me go from 1500 to 2200 I thought I would choke. Sorry I don't have more to offer, but that's what I got.

-Do have a concern regarding the cream, I have borderline high cholesterol. Do cheat on weekends. Have had some 5600 calorie days, but that was with cake and fast food, not exactly muscle building food.
-I do consume 4 tablespoons of natural peanut butter a day and your advice is almost identical to my meal plans. I consume 1 cup cottage cheese and 10 egg whites prior to bedtime, found great product, international egg whites (pre-cooked egg whites) consume 20-24 egg whites per day, price wise not too bad. Any other calorie dense foods? I tend to get so full at times that I get sick if try to force feed every 2-3 hours.

Try having some heavy cream on berries, in coffee, etc.
Peanut butter is a good balance of fat and protein, and quite calorie dense.

Do you use the 90% rule? If you are eating 90% clean, you can have 10% junk. 550 calories of junk can add up fast, but it might be what you need to get those extra calories in.

And eating right before bed if you aren't already. Cottage cheese and casein protein are appropriate at bed time. I am drinking a metabolic drive casein shake right now (I work third shift and am about to go to sleep).

Thanks for the positive feedback. I have gained 30 pounds of lean muscle over the last year (9% body fat), My photo is now on my spark page. I agree with your comments 100%. I found an excellent "diet" currently eating 5200 calories with 6-7 meals a day, very clean, chicken, egg whites, potatoes, rice... all natural and mostly organic. Trying to increase calories to 5500, but stomach can only hold so much, and feeling like wanting to remove the food from my stomach is not very pleasant, working on finding new ways to comfortably get to 5500-6000, to get to 240.

I thought I was a hard gainer until I realized that I just wasn't eating enough to gain muscle. I am not doing 4500-5000 calories a day to gain, 4000 when I am losing fat, and getting a 40:30:30 ratio of carbs:protein:fat. When I cut, it's mainly carbs and some fat that I remove from my diet. Why? Carbs make me hungry, protein and, to a lesser extent, fats make me feel full. You have to know your body.

Welcome, Phil! You have arrived at the right place. The funny thing about people who "complain" about high metabolism is that they aren't eating nearly as much as they think they are. Here at the Bodybuilders team, we've come to know that the more muscle you have, and the more you move those muscles the more fuel you will burn. It's very scientific and mathmatical. With the help of our glorious leader, Jacktheknife (who loves to do extensive research and reading on the subject), I've written a spreadsheet that will calculate how many calories you need to be consuming in order to gain, lose, or maintain weight. There are also recommendations for what your balance of micronutrients should be (protein, carbs, fat). email me at marvelousmom2@yahoo.com and I'll send you a copy. In the meantime, out of curiosity, how many calories are you currently consuming?

P.S. Welcome to the team!

I've been using Sparkspeople to track my nutrition. Unlike most people, I have a very high metabolism and have a hard time gaining weight! (sorry) Would like to network with anyone who may have similar issues with weight gain and those that appreciate an intense body building workout. Enjoy clean eating (alot)! Would love to compete again by age 50.

Jack, looks like she's on about 15%, which is what my trainer had me at for all the time I was with him. I pretty much picked his brain for information, and the only reason he gave was that it was part of some magic formula that he apparently learned in trainer school. I think the 30/30/40 ratio is probably relatively new thinking. When you first introduced it to me, I had my doubts because I'd had such good results with the other formula, but now that I've been on yours and shed the last few pounds I wanted to get rid of, I see that it works.

I think the theory of the 15% rule has to do with carbs fueling the muscle and the muscle burning the fat. I think this is a way to both build muscle and burn fat, which is what he did when I was losing weight (I gained 10 lbs muscle and lost 30 lbs fat at the same time--over 6 months time or less).

At least, that was the theory when I had a trainer.

The simple rule that Jen Heath www.jenheath.com uses is that you should eat half your bodyweight in grams of fat-- for you that would be 73g. I normally use the 40:30:30 rule that says your diet should be 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat.

Anyway, its much easier to get rid of fat when you are consuming it. It sounds weird because that is the opposite of what we all have been taught, but the root of the matter is that when you aren't consuming fat, your body stores the fat you have because it doesn't know when it will be some again.

Of course, your trainer may have a specific reason for your lower fat intake, you might want to ask. Hope this helps.

Are you asking why does he have me eating so little fat? If so, I am not sure. I am new to this. He asked what my goals were and my main goal is to get lean. He did some calculations on my goal weight and went from there. I'm not sure if this answers your question or not. In your opinion should I be eating more?

Hi Jessica.

Out of curiosity, what does your trainer have you eating so little fat?

Thanks everyone!!! I am 5'7" and weigh 146lbs now. I lost 1lb last week, YEAH!!! My goal weight is 135lbs. My trainer currently has me on a diet consisting of:
goal calories 1687
" protein 168
" fat 28
" carbs 189

6 meals a day

Not sure about the date on the 5K. All of the future runs are on weekends and I work weekend 12hr shifts on nights. Still trying to work around that one.

It's really nice to meet everyone and I look forward to getting to know you better! I really appreciate the good humor!

Welcome, Jessica! You're on the right track with your trainer and exercise program; keep up the good work. You didn't mention if you have any weight issues that you're also dealing with, and how soon you're planning on the 5K. What kind of nutrition program does your trainer have you on?

Hi everyone, my name is Jessica. I am 28 years old. I am a single parent and just started working out and using the SP last week. A little over a month ago, I decided some things had to change in my life and bought myself an elliptical machine for home and I love it! I bought a gym membership last week and started working with a personal trainer doing cardio and strength training. I have also started focusing on eating more nutritious meals while getting all the nutrients my body needs. I would like to get toned and live a much healthier and enjoyable life! I was diagnosed with three herniated discs 10 years ago and have not exercised very often since then. I am now trying to strengthen my muscles and overcome my injury. I would love to be able to run a 5K in the near future! I know with God all things are possible!

I would love any ideas or suggestions!!!

What do you mean by "come this time of year"??? Is this an annual thing like with bears, that you do, or has this time of year just motivated you?
