Today is my first day really looking around this site and I must say I feel so encouraged! One of the biggest challenges for me in my weight loss journey is the lack of accountability. Many years ago, a long time friend and I use to lose weight together. When you don't have someone to keep you accountable, it's easy to "do it tomorrow". For me ... Tomorrow is here and I cannot afford to wait another day.

emoticon NEURONURSE23! So glad to have you with us! And emoticon on the Couch to 5K... I am soooo jealous! I myself have never really been an athletic person but decided that this was going to be the year for me to run my first 5K and I downloaded the program too. I was on week 2 when I suffered a knee injury that has sidelined me for a bit (had NOTHING to do with running) but... fingers crossed... I'm hoping I'll be back on my feet soon.
My biggest advice... do your best to get off the pop completely. It's a hard habit to break but once you do and replace it with pure, cleansing water you'll feel fantastic. My monster was Sweet Tea! McDonalds Sweet Tea! My Sweet Tea! ANYONE's Sweet Tea! I LOVE Sweet Tea! Oh My God.... Yes... emoticon I'm jones-ing!!!
Anyway... Excited for you... emoticon so stay in touch and let us know how it's going!

emoticon NEURONURSE23! Having a positive attitude like you do is definitely the first step to getting healthy! The next step is to utilize some of Spark People's great resources like the food tracker. It has helped me out tremendously. As far as getting rid of the abs, the best thing I can suggest is to alternate your workouts and make sure if you do an ab workout, that you do cardiovascular first. That has always been my routine! It has worked for me and I have kept it off. Also, watch your sodium intake. I never used to do that, but this time around it's amazing how much definition my abs actually have! I wish you the best on this journey! Let me know if I can be of any help to you! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi, I am completely new to the game. I am a 42 year old married mother of a 19 year old daughter. I live in Coal City, IL and I am a Neuro nurse in Joliet. I have been considered "thin" my entire life but thin doesn't necessarily mean healthy. Up until 4 weeks ago I was a non-exercising 8-12 can a day. Mt. Dew drinker. Recently I have noticed the weight quickly adding on around my middle and decided if I am EVER going out to my swimming pool this summer I must do something. A friend turned me on to "Couch to 5K" and I have just completed week 3. I have never considered myself a runner but I can't tell you how great I feel when I accomplish a C25K workout. Some days I have mentally had to push myself to not give up and just walk. Starting March 10th I have cut down from my usual 8-12 sodas to 2 or 3 a day. Unfortunately I also have ADHD and the caffeine in Mt. dew, a stimulant, acted almost as an ADHD medication for me, so much so that I quit taking medication. I will be starting back on medication this week and I know it is a much better option than consuming all of those empty calories.

I am off and running on my new "healthy me" journey. I have actual exercise goals now. I want to be able to completely run a 5K by end of summer and hopefully lose some of my "c-section" roll that has accumulated over the last 19 years. If anyone has any advise on the c-section roll thing I would greatly appreciate it. I'm hoping being here helps continue to motivate me!

About six yrs ago I injured my shoulder pretty bad - rotator cuff. I went thru just about every doc in the ortho dept and finally landed with the head of the dept. He didn't want to do surgery so after a year of Steroid shots; pain mess; heat, elec stim, and physical therapy... I took the advice of my son and a very good friend of my sons... I joined the gym. Osric is a personal trainer there and we've known him just about his whole life so knew he would take good care of me. Got the doc to agree to at home therapy since I already knew all the exercises by heart and started doing them with my boys. Instead of $20 per therapy visit (2x a week or more), I pay $20 a month for the gym and go on my schedule. Started with very light weights and a very slow pace but it didn't seem to take long before Oz had me doing more reps and comfortable on the elliptical. My 10 mins on the ellip gradually increased and I finally was able to do a complete program of 30 mins. It's taken a long six yrs but I'm pain free in my shoulders, stronger, and so excited about what's next. Looking back I know I could have gotten here sooner but I did it at my pace.
The gym keeps me on track. It's on the way home from work. It's only $20 a month but if I'm paying for it then by God I'm going to get my money's worth. There are ALL different shapes and sizes there, everyone works at their own pace and I've found real encouragement there too. I am so motivated by the girl with the prosthetic leg who works out on the stair stepper! If she can do that then I can go another five minutes, I can go a little farther, I can try a little harder. I want to see the scale move and I want to see the inches start to melt but more importantly... my blood pressure is coming down, I can breath better, and I smile about going to the gym when I almost cried about going to physical therapy

Thanks DAWNDMOORE40... I'm very excited about the path I'm on.
There are sooo many things that I want to do and see and learn and I just got tired of making excuses for myself. I'm lucky enough to have a wonderful family and friends who don't "ride me" about my flaws but instead have always been supportive of my accomplishments. Truth is that most of my accomplishments were for them. Yes I benefited but my weight, my health, my peaceful heart are all really about me and I want this for me.
I think every once in awhile you have to be just a bit selfish and put yourself first so... my new mantra... emoticon ...

Hello, Jill here from Central IL. Im in what Ive been calling My Practice Year 49, turning 50 in Oct... practicing to be 50 and practicing what Im going to perfect in the second half of my life. The women in my family tend to live well into their 90s and even 100s and not wanting to miss a moment with my family (and those on the way) I want to be as healthy and active as I can be.
I'm new to Spark but not new to dieting or exercise or change even. Grew up an ArmyBrat so change was constant and so was stress. Number 4 of 5 kids, I was always called "the healthy one"... code for the fat little one. As an adult I'm the one who takes all the pictures instead of being in them but Ive come to realize that changing my mindset is the only way I can change myself... my weight, my habits, my circumstances... you have to believe in yourself and believe in your accomplishments or else doubt will kill every chance opportunity that arises.
This past Nov my middle son got married. It was an absolutely beautiful wedding but I hated the way I looked in all but one of the pics. I felt like I was doing all I could but it just wasn't working. Not Any More! I bought a dress that I absolutely LOVE for my oldest sons wedding in May and it fits, looks really nice, but will look even better when I lose about 5 more lbs. My goal is to grow OUT of this dress. That may sound like I'm going backwards but not really. I want to grow in my accomplishments. I want to grow in my ability to make good food choices. I want to grow in muscle mass, in endurance, in Happiness with myself! Eventually this dress that I love will be too big because I'm focusing on how I feel about my milestones rather than the scale. I do still look at the scale and it's not moving as quickly as I would like but I'm not obsessed with it anymore and instead excited that I've grown from 10mins on the elliptical to 33mins to 50mins and now I've moved on to the treadmill. Started the Couch to 5K program last week and so excited about my first ever Run/Walk 5k at the end of April. My goal... to finish! I'm competing against myself and have every confidence that I will win even if I have to drag myself kicking and screaming across the finish line. I have grown stronger than that negative thinking person I used to be. And as you can tell Im excited to share my story and draw from all of yours ~

Afternoon!
I'm in Evanston and work from home as a web designer/manager. I signed on with Sparkpeople because my Fitbit tracker has shown me how inactive I am when I am home. Hopefully this site and the Fitbit will get me moving more often when I am not at the gym!

Hi! My name is Lea. I'm 23 and a stay at home mom. Although there are parts of my body that recovered after having my girls, my belly and thighs sure didn't. So I'm trying to shape up and lose some of the excess skin, fat, and flab in my belly and thighs.

Hi Terri!

Welcome to SP. There are so many great tools here, to help you meet your goals. I love the nutrition tracker, because it includes your nutrition information as well as your calories.

Plus SP has a great support system. There are teams for just about every thing. Groups for age, pounds to lose, hobbies/interest...just so many. Some teams are more active then others, but don't get discouraged. You will find the perfect fit, that's just right for you. You will meet some great friends here too. That's the best part, you'll be supportive of each other, every step of the way.

Most important is to stay active on SP. This is not a crazy fast weight loss kinda thing. It's a journey to being happy & healthy.

Welcome Kari & Lynn.

SparkPeople is a great tool! I love the food tracker. I'm able to track all my vitamins & minerals, as well as my calories. I'm finally starting to realize that, for me, it's not just about cutting calories. It's about a healthy lifestyle and fresh whole foods. That's when I feel my best.

Wishing you both great success in your weight loss journeys.

Hello I am new I am on a plan called Food Addicts in Recovery. I abstain from all sugar, flour products as I believe they are addicting in my system. I have recently begun attending meetings in the Chicago area. If anyone would like to learn more they can find it at foodaddicts.org. It is a spiritual as well as physical program.

I am new to this site, I started working out and would like to lose weight and keep it off I am 25 and very uncomfordable in my own skin. goal wise hope to lose 80 lbs by November. I believe having support gives you the motivation you need to work out and stay on track everyone that I have met that says they would like to work out we say we will but they never follow thru. I know I cant count on anyone else for my success but would like to have help with my motivation.

Hello, my name is Lynn and I am from Bloomington. I am new to this site. I guess I am here for the same reasons everyone else is. Lose weight, motivation. I have been on a eating plan for about 2 weeks. Saw a dietition the other day and she said I should watch my carbs ... I thought I had a good plan but now I have to change everything and I became frustrated. So I had pizza and loaded fries for supper last night. I feel bad because my sister is on the same program and I do all the cooking. So what I eat she has to. That's not fair to her. I feel a bit better today and its a new day. So I am starting over.

Hi, I just rejoined Spark People after being gone for a couple of years. I had a series of injuries and surgeries that derailed me a bit, but I am back on track. I like running, hiking, and yoga. Glad to be part of the team. Thanks for the warm welcome.

Hello! I am brand new, I still have my tags on :)

I am starting this program on this Sunday and I have so many different feelings. Of course I have the feeling of excitment and hope. But then I have the feeling of what if this doesn't workout, what if I am not successful on it and what if, what if, what if.

I have purchased the book and have enjoyed my reading so far. I am a new 34, just turned it last week and I have got to lose weight. I am 5'9 and would like to lose about 70 lbs but my first goal is to lose 50.

I want this so bad and just need as much support and new perspective as I can get.

I am also wondering exactly how you start this. What meal plan do you start with? The one in the book or the the one on the tracker?

Thank you for the welcoming hello's and have a great day!

Hiya everyone! Im back on sp to seriously get myself healthy. I have bounced around weight wise since joing sp years ago. I am disabled and have a hard time with exercise and end up just giving up. I am giving up that mentality and going to make my goals come true this time. Good luck to all

Hi everyone! I am in the south suburbs of Chicago, I am on a low carb, low fat way of living now. I don't go overboard on it tho, but try to live it in my day to day life. Lost 15 pounds this time and would love to lose about 10 more.
