Hi! My name is Chris and I'm a newbie trying to figure out all the things that are available with Spark. Even though I have been overweight for a number of years, my blood pressure has been low to normal so I felt there was no problem. Ha! Just had it checked and it's jumped to 147/90. My triglycerides were so high that they couldn't calculate my cholesterol. So...the wake up call has to be answered. I'm trying to not only lose weight but do it without artificial sweeteners and processed food and have tried to exercise every day. Now I just need to keep my head on straight and not mentally sabatoge myself.

Usually it is best to pick a weigh in day and use that day for your official weekly weight. I use Fridays but I do weigh daily just to keep myself in check.

Hey there! I, too, am a returning Spark member. I've fallen off the bandwagon a few times but the first thing I've done every time I've decided to start back up on a healthier lifestyle is to immediately head to sparkpeople. It's such a wonderful site with so many useful resources. I'm excited to be back! emoticon

Hi and WELCOME BACK to SparkPeople!
I used that excuse for YEARS ... 12, to be exact! It's great that you're getting a handle on YOU, now.
This is the SP Class team of 2008 - you may want to join the 2010 class as they're going to be more active. This team has dwindled down to just a few, as everyone's found teams that are more suited to them.
Good luck on your weight loss goal and your quest to a HEALTHIER lifestyle!

I am committed to get back to my old self AND to live a healthier lifestyle! Can't wait to meet everyone!!!!

Good Luck class of Jan 6-12!

HI Mandy and WELCOME to SparkPeople!
I have a thread where most questions that can be asked about SP or any other thing has been asked and answered. Please check out: www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes
sa
geboard_thread.asp?board=0x15627x223R>67750

I spent a LOT of time getting that thread together!

My advice to everyone is #1 UP your water intake! "They" say to get at least 8-8 ounce cups water in each day, but the "rule of thumb" is 1/2 ounce water per pound body weight. That's not really all that much. In your case, you'd want to be drinking about 10-1/2 cups water each day. That's just to FUNCTION. For every 15 minutes that you sweat, you lose a cup of water, so it's very important to REhydrate as well.
Yep, I'm a "water pusher".
emoticon
This team hasn't been very active for the past year -mostly because the members have found other teams that suit them. I think that team support is essential in our journey to a healthier lifestyle, so check out the teams here on SP and get INVOLVED - but not so much that you lose YOU.
And finally, don't kick yourself if you slip a little or totally fall - we all do that! Just make sure you don't wallow too long when you do!
GOOD LUCK on your weight loss goal and your quest to a HEALTHIER lifestyle!!!

Hi there! I'm a 29 year old from Texas! This birthday was the eye opener for me. Have always struggled with my weight, and since quitting the medical profession i actually have lost a few pounds but not enough to be healthy. I'm 5'2 and topped out at 170+. I say plus because i stopped weighing for a while because i didn't want to know. I'm actively involved at a fitness center and would love any advice or comments to keep me going! Thanks! emoticon

Hi all - You wouldn't think that almost two years after this group was formed, anyone would still be introducing themselves, but here I am. I've been lazy, lazy, lazy this summer. After last summer, which was just as bad, one thing that really helped was getting involved with a fairly active group (Leaving 160-ville, which I'm thankfully no longer qualified to be an active part of!) I really like the challenges this group is offering right now and look forward to taking part in them and being an active member of the community here :)

Good Morning All and Welcome to the Newbies, I am a returning Sparker of this group and have had a bit of a down turn but enjoy the program. So stick with it and as you will find out it is a positive group and full of good advice and caring.

emoticon Ms. Honey: You just gave me a pile of info and right off the shoulder that I should apply to my program. Thank You.

Rainy day in the Wet Coast of Canada. Good day to do all the house work things I deplore, like cleaning cupboards, love to do large things, vaccuum , move things but taking articles out of cupboards...yuk.

All is well, heard from the specialist that I have an appointment now that I have had an MRI on my arm. Now I will find out what is going on.

Have a good day, all for now.

Hi, Didi - sorry it took me SO LONG to get here, but we've just moved and we've to internet issues BIG TIME, but I have been to your page
emoticon
My mother went on the Atkins Water Diet back in 1974. She was pretty hefty for a 5'2" lady. Anyway, you will NOT get the nutrition that you require by solely flushing your body with water. The "rule of thumb" (which I think I told you on your page already) is to get half your weight in ounces of water every day, and for every 15 minutes that you sweat you lose 8 ounces, so not only is it important to HYDRATE, it is also important to REhydrate as well.
And don't forget about the importance of a well balanced nutrtion. I have found that most people are over on calories, carbohydrates and sodium and are SORELY lacking in fiber and protein. Don't worry - we were ALL there! A woman requires a MINIMUM of 1,200 calories TO FUNCTION,so don't go eating LESS thinking that you'll lose weight faster - oh no, the opposite will happen. You'll put your body into what is called Starvation Mode. You should be eating small "meals" throughout the day to help speed up your metabolism and help your body realize that food IS coming. See, in starvation mode your body will store EVERYTHING ... as fat. We don't want that!
OKAY! so I'm climbing down from my soapbox now ... whew! I hope I didn't throw too much at ya, but I was making up for being late in saying

HI! and WELCOME to SparkPeople and the SP Class Team of January 6-12, 2008, aka Honey's Busy Bees!

Welcome, Didi!

Oooh, don't go on a water diet. :)

Just drink water along with your normal healthy eating habits. You won't BELIEVE how much good you'll do for yourself just by upping the water - fewer aches and pains, more stamina for EVERYTHING, fewer illnesses ... it's NOT just about weight, water really IS the miracle liquid!

And this is just *me* ... wait till Rita notices your post ... :D

Cheers,
Maya

Hi, I'm Didi. I just joined SP after a friend convinced me to join. I normally don't take advice from friends, just from family. However, I'm looking forward to this adventure. I just don't know how I'm going to handle drinking all this water. The last time I went on a water diet I spent half the time in the ladies room. emoticon

Hi Dolly and WELCOME! Sorry it took awhile to get here, but we have just moved from home and haven't been able to get online!
Varee hit it RIGHT ON by telling you to just start using that tracker. After a few days you'll see where you're too high (probably fats/carbs) or too low (protein/fiber) and you can start tweaking your eating habits.
Water IS the most important ingredient in helping you to reach your goals. The rule of thumb is to get in half your weight in ounces of water each day. BUT if you're only drinking 4 cups today, I sure wouldn't aim for 10 tomorrow - take it easy and bump it up a cup every 3 or 4 days until you reach that goal. Your body WILL learn how to utilize the water that you give it and the potty runs will become less frequent ---- HONESTLY!
Those Peanut M&M's are my downfall, so I know where you're coming from! I did succeed in "hiding" them from myself (okay, they were in a drawer) and stayed away for an entire MONTH - it can be done if you are determined, use that willpower and your desire to succeed - make them STRONGER than that call to the candies!
Again WELCOME and GOOD LUCK on your weight loss goal and your quest to a HEALTHIER lifestyle!

Hi Dolly.. would it be possible to get your hubby to buy you oranges, apples & grapes instead and let him know you'd rather start eating a little healthier? It's just a suggestion. Don't forget to check out the nutrition tracker and for a week or 2 instead of trying to diet, just track everything you eat and a lot of things you will be able to look at and see where you could have made better choices. Oh, and Water! Drink lots of water! It will help so much.

Good Morning and Welcome:

I am with this group and find it very helpful, looking forward to the motivation I find in this link. I too have a problem with limiting my food, but it is not cookies, it is bread and butter, lots of it so I have to freeze my bread. Keep on trying, I have and hoping to overcome it one day.

Hi LaTasha. Like you I started out with good intentions last year, this year I came back knowing that it wasn't going to be easy, but I am worth the effort. I'm glad you've found your way back and rededicated yourself to making changes for a healthy future.

My name is LaTasha. When I joined this website I did it thinking it was going to be a piece of cake. I would probably log into my page maybe once a month and for a few months I fell completely off. I have decided that 2009 is my year. I have rededicated myself and am looking forward to make good progress one day at a time.

Hi! My name is Elizabeth and I'm FINALLY stopping by to introduce myself. I joined this team a few weeks ago, but had a few bad weeks during March. I love the first day of the month because it feels like a fresh start. So here I am, looking to knock April out of the park! As for me, I am 25, recently married, living in North Jersey. My goals were simple when I started this journey, to really just feel better about myself and have more energy. Well I definitely achieved that! So now it's on to more specific things. I am going to Hawaii in mid August and I would like nothing better than to wear...no wait....FLAUNT a bikini!! So this is a big hello and hope to see everyone sparking around!

HI Allison! Welcome BACK and CONGRATS on your rededication to your goals!
If you've not begun to, use the nutrition tracker - it's a great tool to see where you're going "wrong". Most of us find that we're too high on things like sodium, carbs & fats, and too low on fiber and protein.
Of course, aim for half your weight in ounces of water daily, not only to aid you in weight loss, but water has SO MANY other benefits as well!
Again, WELCOME & CONGRATS!

Hi...I'm Allison and I signed up for Spark last year, but kind of got lost in my weight loss journey. I have been hard at it since January and figured I should finally introduce myself. I have two wonderful boys ages 12 & 9, a great job that I love to go to everyday, and I am finally ready to lose the weight!

Lailas, this thread doesn't seem to be getting much action - head on over to the General Team Discussion Forum and get in on the action over there - start up a new thread to chat, or go ahead and chat on some of the existing threads!

Good to hear you're heading back to the SP game - it's fun here! :)

Cheers,
Maya

emoticon I'm Late for the most important date, my checking the links. Had a migraine and wow, but now I am on the road, rain and mixed weather, should have known it yesterday, but that's okay, with Spark's messages I am hidden in a room by myself and getting the best of the Spark motivation and stop feeling sorry for myself, not that I do it very often.

All for now. Have a Great Weekend and Enjoy Whatever You plan to do.

Hello Everyone:

I have been lax in not messaging and have to get back in the groove. Had a lot of family things going on and need to put this first after them.

Trust all is going well with the group and congrats to all who have lost, encouragement to all who have maintained and good luck to us who have yet to loose.

Hockey on to-nite so I will be reading messages and get motivated.

Welcome Wayne. We are happy to have you join our team. You will find that this is a very supportive team. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Also you can read over the question thread as well. There you will find so many questions other team members have asked with detailed answers. Have a great day.

So I think this has been a year in the making, but better late than never? I copied this letter questionnaire from another thread, so forgive my lack originality!

1. Name: Wayne

2. Place: Sheldon, IA

3. Birthday: March 26th, 1983

4. Beginning Weight: 270

5. Target Weight: 185

6. Marital status: Single

7. Children: None

8. Grandchildren: None

9. Pets: None

10. What are your strengths: Determination, Loyalty and Communication

11. What are your weaknesses: Willpower

12. Are you currently using a weight loss program, i.e-South Beach, Weight Watchers: No

13. What do you consider your fitness level: Intermediate to advanced

14. What are your favorite active activities: Running, biking, elliptical and weights

15. Have you set any short term goals? If so, what are they: Lowering body fat percentage (the thought occurs to me that if I put an actual NUMBER down, it would be more effective, ha!)

16. Have you set any longer term goals? If so, what are they: I would like to be down to 185 lbs and 10% body fat

17. What motivates you and keeps you motivated: I am motivated by my progress. When I first started my lifestyle change last year, I was at 270 lbs and 36% body fat, I am now down to 205 and 17%. The fact that I am a stones throw away from my goal keeps me going! That, and friends who will pummel me if I ever fall of the wagon!

18. What are 3 things you want us to know about you: I was always the big guy, all of my 25+ years on this earth and now that I have begun getting healthier, my total perspective on life has changed! It's really been one of the greatest things I've ever done. I've actually been a part of SparkPeople for a year now, but was kind of lazy on the giving end, so now I'm trying to make up for it! And, let's see, one more thing...oh, I talk for a living, which is the LEAST active job ever, but probably the most fun! Thanks for reading!

HI LIz and congrats on your rededication! Have you had a chance to check out the trackers? They're wonderful tools to aid you in your weight loss goal.
This team is GREAT. We've got a LOT of supportive people here!
If you haven't yet had a chance, swing by the POPULAR QUESTIONS threads for anything you may not quite understand yet. When this team first got up and running, there were a lot of questions asked and answered and you'll find most of them there.
Again, CONGRATS on the rededication and GOOD LUCK on your journey!

Rain to-day so I will be out with husband getting the car checked. Like us, the battery runs out some times, will be hitting the pool to-morrow and get back in the program. Love the water and can do much more walking and feel great after.

Take care

Welcome back, Ladonna! Tell you what, instead of digging through all of SP at one sitting, how about you promise yourself a particular amount of time every day? Say 20 minutes to start with. Just enough to log your foods and exercise for the day.

That *alone* will help you stay on track - if you have to write it down where others can see it, you'll be more likely to stick to your eating and exercise plan! :)

If, after you're done tracking, you still have time left, then go read ONE article (Health? Nutrition? Fitness? Motivation? Wellness?) that would be of interest to you (don't forget to click on the "Get Your SparkPoints" button - you get 3 points per article, but there is a max of 9 points per day.

Even if SparkPoints don't motivate you, reading the articles will give you great insights on what yu're eating, how your body reacts to different kinds of exercise, how to prevent injuries, how to stay motivated, etc., so they are well worth reading! Most of the articles are short - just a page or two, sometimes more.

You'll be doing something GREAT for your mind and your body! :)

And don't forget to participate on your teams - that community support is one of the BIG reasons why people find it easier to stay on track when they use SP!

Cheers,
Maya

Hi everyone. I've been very bad. I joined SP and was active for awhile and then I went away and then I came back and was active for awhile and then I went away again. Now, I'm back again and trying to really stick with it. I'm sorry that I have not been a very good team player. I guess part of my problem is that there is so much information on SP that once I log in I'm here for hours. Sometimes I don't have hours to spare so I just don't log in at all. I'm really going to try to do better and get involved and do my part :) I found out the other day that I may be having a 25 year class reunion in September of this year so now I REALLY want to lose the weight and look good! Help! :)

Spun 25 on the wheel of fortune so that makes me happy. Will try to get on the H20 program to-day, after I drink all the tea and lemon to bring down this achy breaky feeling. Take care

Thank you. I started out getting sick. Something that went around and was close to being phnuemonia. Everyone at work got it. Then I returned to school and that was really rough. I'm still in school and working now, but have gotten used to it.

Getting better at this food plan stuff, when I thought I knew it all, once again somehow I am thrown a curve, not my curvey body but guess the extra cals do make my bod more curvey.

You're doing JUST FINE Lailas!
Those meds CAN be difficult! My DH (Dear Husband) is diabetic, has high cholesterol (hereditary) and high blood pressure. The HBP *was* under control when he joined me on SP for a few months in 2007, but he's not been on and that HBP came right back up! The sedentary lifestyle that he is chosing to live is NOT helping him.
Ah, but what can I do, eh? I can only do so much for him, the rest he needs to do for himself. So, I put more effort into ME!
Yes, it IS all about "ME"!

Hi all and Jewellery Lady:

Been drinking all day then put on my favourite music, Handel's "Water Music" how appropriate for the challenge. Needed the extra jugs of H20 as I am watching my husbands numbers as he is a diabetic and dr. took him off some meds and the numbers are going up. Usually I hit the fridge, but to-day hit the bottle - water that is.

Learning to use the message boards and such. Still not sure about my web page. Take care.

Hello everyone. It has taken me awhile to get here. I am not computer illiterate, I just couldn't figure it out.

I am a 55 year old woman with 58 pounds to lose and I want to do it by the end of the year. That's not unreasonable but I really need daily reinforcement to help me get there.

I hope I can help others as you help me and we can all get there together.

I am on Team C but I am clueless about how to find them. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Cathy

Hi Everyone,

Well I'm 1 week in and so far so good. I feel great and I'm feeling very motivated. As with Ruby..It's good to know that I'm not in this alone and that I have support from not only my husband and family but from others that know what I'm going through.

I look forward to learning from others that understand what it's like to want to lose weight.
