Good luck on your training! You mentioned in another post that you had plantar and you had custom orthotics made for you. Do you go to a doctor for that?

Hi, Amy, and welcome!

If you've never done a 5K, I highly recommend you get one in sometime during your training program; you have plenty of time. That way, you'll be able to predict how well your 10K should go, all things remaining the same, and you'll be better prepared for the distance.

No one really cares how you get to the finish line except you; it's your achievement. Just go out there and have fun!

Alysia :)

I'm very new to all this too. For the most part, I'm walking, with a little jogging in there. lol I'm signing up for my first race on the 4th of July. I thought I'd do the 5k if I didn't feel like I could make it the whole way for the 10k, but after this last week, I'm feeling confident, so I'm going for it! Granted, there may be very little walking, and the sun may set before I'm done, but I'm doing it!!!

Have a great weekend everyone!

IGNITE THE LIGHT AND LET IT SHINE!!!

I WILL get back on track and make forward progress!!!!!

The phone is just a tool, I get more out of the piece of paper where I write down what I did and the shiny sticker on ther that says WAY TO GO! Positive feedback from friends and coworkers really boosts my esteem and helps create motivation. You gals are doing a great job! I am so glad I joined. :-)

Keep on slogging!
Anna

It comes down to a simple question: what do you want out of life, and what are you willing to do to get it?

You made me laugh. I sometimes order books from BetterWorld Books. They sell new and used books online and every purchase benefits a charity. Each time you put a book in your basket the little pop-up says "Good choice!" and I somehow feel even more interested in reading the book.
I need to get a phone that does all those things and encourages me too....

I have a C25K app on my phone too. I love it because at the end of each run interval the "voice" says great job keep up the good work. Now I understand that the lady has no idea if I did a great job or not but it works for me :)

Nothing that keeps you motivated is silly if it works. You sound like you have a great system for making this work for you. Welcome to the team!

Jennifer, Way to go! It's not easy as I am finding out. The hardest part is putting on my runners and getting out the door...jeesh! I am a bit of a tech junkie so I have downloaded apps for my phone and use it to create my intervals and record where/how fast I run/steps/distance, etc. It's cool to write it all in my journal and I even give myself a sticker (way to go, super, etc) when I have completed every run. Sounds a bit silly, but we all need a bit of reinforcement for a job well done.

Keep on slogging!
Anna

Hey thanks for the advice :-) My goal is to complete the fun run whether I run walk or crawl. (there is a 5k option too.) I always find myself last every Sunday when I run with the training group. It doesn't bother me as I am happy I am not sitting on the couch. I do 2 sessions for homework during the week which are far less intense (3min jog/1min walk/x7) I do as much as my body will allow and then back off. I really like the outdoors even if it snowed here 3 inches last night.

Welcome, Shaundafino!

My concern is that you're taking on a relatively long distance in a relatively short period of time as a newbie runner. Please try to not push too hard too soon as, realistically, you don't have a good base to begin with.

So, as a coach, I highly recommend that you focus less on how much running - or slogging - you're doing and more on building the strength and endurance you need, so that you truly can have fun at the run and want to do it again.

Keep it real and you will not be disappointed. Just have the goal to finish standing upright and smiling for the camera - injury-free.

Have fun during your training!

Alysia :)

I have recently started running too. I'm doing a couch to 5k program but I can run now for 90 seconds at a shot and that is truly a feat. I'm so excited to hear that you have been using a similar program and are doing it. Awesome!

Hi All,
Here I am at 46yrs old, never having run before and packing around over 220 lbs. My friend says," wanna join the 10K training program with me?". Foolish me said, "sure, why not?" Well I am 6 weeks into the interval training and am proud to say I have gone from not being able to jog for 1 minute to slogging for up to 10 min and walking 1 minute. I look forward to exploring the forum, making friends and finding the motivation to carry on through to the fun run in May.
Cheers!
