That's the advantage of a small field. At my first 5K, I won my age group, even though I came in at 42 mins! That field was under 1000. Earlier this year, I won another age group category at a 5K, coming in at 36 mins in a field of under 100. Besides the fact that small fields are more fun, bringing home a medal or trophy is very uplifting - and encouraging to others who may be looking at you for inspiration.
So, there you go, inspire on!

The funny thing is that both times I came in dead last I won an award for my age group. Both were small races. One was a 5k and I was coming back from dealing with severe sciatica for a few months and was just grateful I could run. I got a 2nd place trophy because there were only 2 females in the age group. But I knew what it had taken for me to do it so I was proud anyway. The other time I got a first place because I was the only female in the age group. That was a 10k that ended up with only about 30 or so runners total.

Welcome, LindaKay!
Like you, I was in my 50's when I started running, and I'm sure I did everything wrong that could be.
There have been times when I've been close to the last of the pack, but managed to stay ahead of the sag wagon. One of my buddies would say, as she's right in front of the sag wagon, she's just making sure no one else is in the way.

I loved the name of this team too. I'm still overweight and definitely slow! At age 56 I just started running last year and have had a few setbacks but still working on it. I do love to run races just to challenge myself. A couple of times I have been dead last but love the quote by C. Hunter Boyd that "Last is just the slowest winner".

Welcome to all our Newbies!
Sure, a few of us are nearly "over" the "fat" part (I'm not, yet), but it's all relative. My daughter insists that I'm not as round as I used to be, but my belly is still hiding my abs and scoffing at me.
Some of use may be a little faster than others, but, we don't care what pace you run or walk.
It's all about the fitness and your choice of a healthy lifestyle and we're all here to help keep you on track.
Have fun here!

I just joined the team recently, too, and had the same ROFL that you did!

THIS was the group I was looking for, lol! I've been running off and on the past year, took the summer off because I don't like running in the heat. Yeap, I'd rather run when it's -10C out than when it's +30C, thank you very much! Then just as I started back I tore my calf playing soccer. Just getting back at it, doing the couch to 5K yet again, lol! And when I do run I run slow. My pb from June was 40 minutes and I was damn proud of that!
Looking forward to meeting y'all. :-)
