Hi, Dana, and welcome!

Yes, I think you're a Rookie Runner - for at least the second time around, since you used to run before.

Congrats for sticking to the treadmill for nearly an hour - I want off in 5 minutes, LOL! Now that you're getting back into running, is there a local group you can join?

Hi all!

My name is Dana and I've been working out for the past year or so, and have already lost 50 pounds. As the elliptical machine isn't doing much for me anymore, so I decided to give jogging a shot. I used to run with my dad when I was a teenager and ran pretty regularly back then, but that was also 15 years ago. I started walking and then I started jogging, for a minutes, then 5 minutes, then I decieded to run a mile...and I did it! Then, last week, I ran a "5k" on the treadmill...very slowly of course...but I ran nevertheless. I ran the 5k in 50 minutes and I was very proud of myself. I almost wanted to shout, "I ran a 5k for FIFTY MINUTES!!!" in the gym, but I restrained myself. emoticon

I feel like I'm a beginner, but I look at the beginner workouts in magazines and and I feel like I'm past that point, but I'm definitely SLOW SLOW SLOW at running. So, I guess I'm not a beginner, but a rookie? All I know is that I'm very new to this jogging/running aspect of my life, and I'm doing something that I thought I was too "fat" to do. I realized that it's mind of matter more than athletic ability.

My goal is run a real 5k, 8k, 10k, half marathon and eventually a marathon. I'm learning everything I can about running and how to do this new hobby safely, so that I don't injure or burn myself out.

I'm looking forward to the conversations and learning everything new about running with people who know that I'm a slow, fat runner! emoticon

Maybe we'll see you at the RNR next year! It all depends upon whether or not I do the Tri during Seafair with my sister. In any case, the RNR is on a good route, although our least favorite stretch was the Viaduct.

Good luck with your training. :)

Hi, Nicole, and welcome!

Congrats on your awesome progress, and I hope your training goes well. I see you're from around Seattle. My daughter and I have done the Seattle Rock N Roll Marathon since the inaugural, and decided to do only the Half, this last time around.

Let us know how you're doing with both your training and weight loss plan,

Hi, Nicole! Congratulations on these healthy decisions! I made a similar commitment on the 1st of July and am also getting race ready after knee surgery. I'm glad to meet someone with so much in common. emoticon Congrats on your weight loss! Keep up the great work! emoticon

Congrats on your 5K!! That's awesome. And, I know for me, having a long-term goal and some shorter term goals really helps with the motivation.

Welcome, it's nice to meet you!

I'm Nicole and I too am a slow, fat "runner"... I started a 1 Year Challenge to take off between 104 and 124 lbs on 06/08/11 and after a week or two found a 5K training program in Fitness magazine that I wanted to try. I had no intention of running a 5K, just wanted to see if I could do the program, after a week I realized I could and signed up for the Foster Kid 5K (completed last week in 42.01, not the last runner and ahead of all walkers). Before I ran my 5K a friend and I decided to take the year to train for a Marathon and do the 5K, 10K and half leading up to it. So I am in training, and have been for 7 weeks now, to run a Marathon in June 2012. I have read Jeff Galloway's Marathon:You Can Do It and am working through the Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer and for inspiration am finishing up Dean Karnazes' Ultra-Marathon Man! I registered for my 10K a few days ago, it is in 4 weeks and there is a 90 minute course cut off- which if all goes right I can and will finish in...

Today is week 10 of my Challenge (I weigh in later) and as of last week I am down 27.4 lbs! This week or next I should hit 30Lbs, 10% lost and my lowest weight as an adult!!! I am hoping to be less slow and fat by the marathon, but for now I am happy to just finish!
