Hi All,

I am so happy to have found this group. I am new to SparkPeople, but I have heard so many good things about it. I have been all over the board with regards to weight and fitness, but currently, "Slow and Fat" pretty much sums it up for now. Moving is moving, right :)!!!

Hi, Robyn, and welcome!

That you can run for 8 mins at a time is awesome! But, you don't have to. 5 mins would be plenty for you.

Congrats on your HMs, and taking it slow during your training is just what you should do. Speed comes with time, strength and endurance.

Hi all: This team name pretty much describes me. I have walked 5 half marathons and am currently training for my 6th. I will never be fast, but would like to be less slow. LOL This summer I started SLOWLY working my way thru the C25K workouts. I can now "run" for 8 minutes at a time. I'm really enjoying pushing myself but, due to my age and weight, have to take it slow.

@ACORALSEA - the military (in my case US Army) requires all members to meet certain weight and physical training requirements. Failure to do so means that you are placed on restrictions and denied promotions (at least that was handled where I was stationed, about 11 years ago.) Continued failure can mean a military discharge. They certainly do try to "help you" become more fit, by requiring twice daily hour and a half (or more) training sessions. Unfortunately, that mostly consists of them yelling at you to try harder, rather than any actual technique. At the same time, I was being berated for being 5 pounds over what they considered to be my max rate. Ssg Johnson's advice for meeting the BMI requirements? Well, you see, I have wide hips, which was throwing my whole ratio off. His suggestion was that I bulk up my neck and forearm to give an overall impression of larger bone structure. Yeeeeeah....just what an 18 year old female wants of her body: bulky forearms and neck ( ;
I was training to become a translator/linguist, but they don't cut you any slack for having a non-physical job.

Welcome to all you newbies! I'm honored that you joined us.

Funny name, serious purpose, but I'm happy it makes you smile, even laugh a little. People do laugh when I tell them the name of this team, but, not when I say what we're all about. Then, they start asking how they can find us. Cool, eh?

T-shirts - I've been considering that. Would you pay for one? What would you like as a motto? For example, on the back of my marathon training team's shirt, we have "No whining." I'd have to set this up via our sister website.

I can't believe the military would discharge someone for being too slow a runner. I would have thought that they would help you become more fit, at the very least, and work with you to find a post where you could still serve and be of value. Sergeant Johnson - what were you thinking!

A lot of people run - even walk - faster than I, but that doesn't matter. There's a 70-something year old woman on my training team who is faster and stronger a runner than I, but she has been running marathons a lot longer, too. When people ask how well I expect to do at my events, I just say I want to finish before the 80-year old woman. I see so many of us putting one foot in front of the other for anywhere from 3.1 to 26.2 miles and the smiles on their faces when they cross the finish line - okay, when they get past that finish line and are met by family and friends proud of the athlete's accomplishment.

Yes, we're athletes, of all shapes and sizes, all ages and ability levels.

And I'm very, very proud of you all!

Thank you for being here,

emoticon

Wow...I have had one helluva crappy day (as I returned from buying medical supplies for my dying, renal failure cat I was served a summons to appear in court for unpaid (human) medical fees) but when I saw this group listed on somebody's page, I had my first smile of the day....even laughed a little!

Slow, Fat Runners. Awesome. Can we make t-shirts? No, seriously!! I am the embodiment of a slow, fat runner. I was discharged from military service for, essentially, being a slow, fat runner. I was shamed by this for many years, until my shame turned to anger, which eventually turned into a sort of defiant pride. Yes, your grandmother DOES run faster than me, Sergeant Johnson! And I don't care!

Thanks for the chuckle!

Hi new to the team, my name is Omeka. I have NEVER been a runner, so this is very new to me. When I was in Junior high, and High school I was the one who hid in the bathrooms and hung out with my friends while everyone else ran! LOL Well now I would love too run, but i have too much weight on me! :( So my goal is to lose 50 pounds and then start running. I am at almost 30 now so wish me luck! Love the treadmill at this point but have not tried running at all. SO way to go to ALL of you RUNNERS!! Enjoy it! :)

Hi all. I'm new to the team. I use to be an athlete but 2 kids and many years later the thought of running scares me. I start the training program on Jan. 1st but I'm going to sneak in some sessions before then. I hope to participate in my 1st half marathon in May (knees willing).

Hello!
I am a slow, fat, inconsistent runner. I have been through the C25K program only to quit two runs before the finish, grrrr! I haven't run a 5K yet, but have plans to do a few in 2011.
I'm looking for motivating friends and accountability partners.
Good Luck with your runs in 2011!

The last run I did was on Sunday (very cold and windy). 3.25 miles in 46 minutes. I will be running in my first 5K on Sunday (12/12). I look forward to getting to know all of you!

First day here, I just started the C25K workout. It says it will take you from couch potato to running a 5K in just 9 weeks. I've always wanted to be a runner so I'm going for it. I started to say I'm gonna TRY it, but changed my mind. I'm gonna DO it!

Hi, I'm new to this team. I started running in May and have made slow progress. I participated in my first 5K last month and finished in 44 minutes. I really enjoy running and would like to find tips and support.

Hello Everyone I am Jean and a slow fat runner I have been a walker for more than 3 years. Now I would like to progress back into running (its been 15 yrs.) As silly as it sounds I can actually walk faster than I can run. I signed up to do the disney 1/2 marathon in Jan. I have walked 4 1/2's but would like to run this one.

No way! I happened to run across this team through a friend's SparkPage and this team is just so right up my alley. I started on a fitness trek about a year and a half ago, which was completely out of my comfort zone. Then, I got talked into running a race last August...the Muddy Buddy in Boulder, CO. OK, that really wasn't me, but the nice thing was, I didn't die! And I wasn't in last place! And I finished it! Since then have put running into my program and have been on a couple of marathon relay teams, but still struggle with how to do things better and improve my time and stamina. I want to get to the point where I can run and feel like I've tackled it, not run and pray that I get through it!

This is absolutely thrilling to find this team!!! I am looking forward to seeing what cool things everyone is involved in. I still struggle greatly with working on fitness and weight loss, and even though things are much better than when I started, still have quite a ways to go.

WooHoo!

Hi all! I'm Beth, just joined the team today. I've been working on C25k for a few weeks now, I just did W2D2 earlier today--I'm hoping to be able to run a 5k by October 2 for the AIDS Walk Washington in DC! Glad to find a group where people understand about being a slow, fat runner!
I feel fortunate in that I haven't gotten any strange looks or comments (that I've seen or heard, anyway) while out running since I started. I run on the W&OD Trail in Northern Virginia, where people are generally awesome. I don't have to worry about cars driving past (except when I'm crossing roads) and everyone else on the trail is there for fitness, too, so no judgment there!
As I continue to lose weight and gain endurance while running, maybe some day I'll aim for a 10k or half marathon! We'll see where my journey takes me!

Hi there,
Not new to SP, but new to this team. I recently walked my first half marathon and am playing with the idea of running a 5k...next year! :P I have three half marathons I want to walk between now and next April, but am intent on getting my time down. I expect I'll have to start racewalking and/or doing some jogging intervals. I have knee and back issues, and have never been a runner, but walking that half marathon has really made me think I want to do more. I'm a bit afraid of running, honestly, because I'm concerned about injury, not being skinny.

I hope I can take that next step to running and hope to learn from this team!

Hi. I am very slow and very fat. I tried jogging a little at the gym. Let's just say the walkers were faster. But, I'm determined and hope to accomplish becoming a runner someday. I'm looking forward to being part of this group.

Hi, My name is Ann and I am an old, slow semi-fat runner but I am a pretty good walker! I will be 55 this year and at 155 and 5'5" probably about 20 pounds over weight. My goal in 2010 is to try and run w/out walking for about 30 minutes. For some reason, I can walk fast but as soon as I start to jog, I stiffen up.. think it is "mental block". I like walking/running outdoors and in Central Ohio it is a little icy to do that consistently. I am excited to join this team. have a great day!

Hi everyone!
In a nutshell...I decided to join this group but I'm not sure where to start. I want to start running but where do I begin? My form of exercise right now is walking. I was walking outside until we got dumped on w/snow and ice and cold. I joined a gym and I am walking on the treadmill. Before when I was walking outside I was walking 3 miles...not doing that now though for some reason. It isn't the same on the treadmill..anyway I thought that running would help in my weight loss efforts....so that is why I am here. Where do I begin? Help please!

Hi Everyone... I am a very slow and fat runner! I did my first half marathon (power walk) this past September and immediately jumped into planning for a full one. I joined the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training and am planning to run/walk the full Rock'N'Roll marathon in Phoenix this coming January 17th. I am still pretty heavy so running has been a huge challenge for me. I will be happy with just finishing within the time limit. :)

Looking forward to getting to know everyone! :)

The Couch to 5K (C25K) program on coolrunning.com is a great program. It is great for easing you in to running, minimizing the pain and injuries. One thing that helps motivate me to keep running is a Pandora bracelet. When I reach a goal in weight loss or running I buy me a new charm. Last Saturday I ran my first 5K and did great so I am going to get a charm as a reward. Anything for a reward that you can add to works great. Good luck!

Hello everyone! My name is Shannon and I'm a slow, fat runner. I'm actually just returning to running after taking a hiatus; partially due to not having any time and largely due to being lazy lol. I love running, mainly because it makes me feel like Im *really* working out because I exert so much energy. I plan on running for at least 30 mins, Mon-Fri and taking weekends off. My normal time back when I was running everyday was around 11 mins per mile.

Today I ran for 30 mins at 4.5mph, which is obviously very slow but if I start out too fast, I get wicked shin splints. Im aiming to get up to 5.0mph by the end of Oct

Nice to be a part of this team!

Current goal: 205 pounds by June 1st

Goal for July 1st: 190
Goal for August 1st: 175
Goal for September 1st: 160 (Goal for now- when I reach this, I will evaluate how I feel at this weight)

Hi!
I am new to team. I have tried to complete a walk to run program more than a couple of times but have never stuck with it. I really want to do it this time, any advice on perservering?

I mentioned to my sister that I thought it would be cool to a 5k together. She ran with it literally, now partly due to my extremely busy schedule, FT work, FT School, Family etc...I am way behind her in training.

I would like to do a 5K on Thanksgiving day in a nearby town. I have given myself 9 weeks to get to the point where I can run 30 minutes straight. Tomorrow will be my Week 1 day 3. Any advice is welcomed.

Wow, that is rough! I really pay attention when I am lifting weights because I am afraid I am going to hurt something. Good luck.

I pulled a muscle in my lower back, it acted like sciatica with pain shooting down into my calf (I could not walk for a week); anyway, not a running injury- I was circuit training when it happened.

I am working up my courage to run again, maybe even tonight. Wish me luck!

Winnerinky - what happened? I hope it wasn't a running injury!

Welcome all our newbies!

Remember what John "The Penguin" Bingham says, "It's not about the speed."

Amanda - be careful running on an injury. I hope you either heal quickly or get some treatment. Finishing a 5K in 40-something minutes is an accomplishment!

Hello all! I am definitely a slow, fat runner! I just got into running this year. I completed the C25K program and did my first 5K in May. I haven't been running regularly since but I want to get back into it. Nice to meet all of you!

Hi all! I'm a back-of-the-pack runner and I'm training for my first half marathon. I did my first 5k on June 6th in my expected 50 mins.

I did my first 4 miles this morning.. it was HOT out there at 6am, sigh, and it was a looonnng incline - both ways! Really. LOL I walked most of it.. but I did it!

Hello. I am new to this team, and new to running. For some reason, at age 41, I have an urge to run! I have NEVER been a runner, so this is all new for me. I ran 2 miles yesterday, slow, in 30 minutes. My daughter came along to help me. She's trying to teach me how to breath correctly. Any suggestions for breathing techniques? Suggestions on anything would be appreciated. I did watch some youtube vids on running/jogging. OH and it would be EASIER if you posted your reply on my page...not sure if I'd ever find this again to be able to read since I dont check the box because it fills up my inbox. THanks
