Hi, my name is Judy and I have one more pound to lose to reach my first goal of a healthy BMI. I would like to lose an additional 10 pounds next year, but my short term goal is to maintain through the holidays. Maintenance kind of scares me and trying to maintain during the holidays terrifies me. I have always been better at taking the weight off then keeping it off.

I did take a very different approach this time. I took it very slow. It took me over eight months to lose 35 pounds. I eat a balance diet and keep my calories at the high end of my daily range for 3 to 4 days a week and the middle of the range the other days. Also, I do at least 20 minutes of fitness everyday. In the past I would cut my calories way down and try to take off weight as fast as possible.

I have developed a lot of healthy habits that I hope will help me maintain. Once I take off another pound or two, my plan is to start increasing my calories to (1500 - 1600 calories) most days while keeping an eye on the scale.

Hi all, I am Tulika, I am soon to turn 50.(March 17,2015). My original goal was to lose 50 lbs (177.8 lbs-127.8lbs) by my birthday...of which I have already lost 28.6 lbs before joining this group.
I have set a new goal from today until my birthday 149.2lbs-111lbs).
I started in March 2014 by analyzing my food intake and found that though my quantities of intake were moderate, I wasn't getting enough protein. Being a vegetarian I had limitations. So I increased my intake of beans and my wt loss started. I lost 14 lbs in 4 months without much exercise.
With travel etc during the month of July, I gained back 3 lbs in one month.

I lost 11 lbs in the month of August by cutting off SUGAR, MILK &MILK PRODUCTS, FAT ( zero fat for 4 days a week), WHEAT, TEA & COFFEE. And added exercise to my regime.
I walk on flat ground and run up on slopes, cycle, run up steps ( now can do upto 113 steps with 2 breaks for water). This I do for 2 days. I soon plan to add swimming.
The next 2 days I go weight training and then the last 3 days of the week I do yoga exercises, and get body massage professionally 1 day a week and do self massaging for 2 days a week.

I walk and cycle 5 days a week at least.

Now with the new goal of 38 lbs more instead of the original 22 lbs to lose, I decided to join this group and learn more from experiences of people in this group.

Hi, I am kind of at goal weight. I want to go down 5 more pounds but I am kind of stuck so I figure I will just keep on trying to firm up and trim down.(hopefully)
I read all the intros and I feel like I'm home here.

I had an active page on Spark in 2010. It helped me lose 45 pounds and I have since lost another 5 giving me a 50 pound weight loss and keeping it off. When I stopped dieting (something I've been doing my entire life, weight up and down) and stopped eating out and learned how to cook delicious healthy meals at home, I lost the weight. I love to move my body and I'm a hiker.

I recently retired to the San Juan Islands and with this nice weather, only been using my bicycle to go into town. Even when I was gone from Spark, I would visit to read blogs. The blogs on this site is a big factor in keeping my weight off.

Looking forward to participating on this team.

Jac, glad to have you on our team.
Great words of wisdom from you. Those are the very same techniques I used to lose my weight. But, since getting a Fitbit that I wear 24/7 I have found I have gained back enough of my weight to no longer be comfortable in my clothes. I mention the FB because it actually encourages me to eat more based on my movements. It syncs with SP so they encourage me to eat more. I have just come to realize this and believe with your message here that I have got to go back to the 1200-1500 a day calorie intake no matter what FB and SP tell me.
Thanks for the nudge.

Hi Susan,
I read your plea for help and wanted to tell you that I use the Food Tracker on SP. It keeps me accountable. I journal EVERYTHING I put in my mouth. 1/2 tsp mustard, 1/2 tsp butter, etc. Personally, my target caloric intake each day is within the bottom 100 calories of the low end of the range they set for me. (Range is 1200-1500 so I eat around 1200) On occasion I allow myself to get close to the top end of the range but not often.
Secondly, I use the water tracker for my water intake DAILY since this is vital for weight loss.
Lastly, I track my fitness minutes. Set the settings so your exercise minutes "talk" to your food tracker. This will cause your calorie allowance to increase on the days you exercise.

I have lost 12.6 lbs in almost 8 weeks since I started 5/26. I do take Garcinia Cambogia and Green coffee bean extract daily but am not positive it is doing as much as it claims it will. I have just been really disciplined with my tracking journal for accountability so I give that the credit.
Hope this helps. Feel free to message me if you think I can help.

Hi all,
I joined SP in 2009 as a young widow that wanted to start taking care of myself for my children's sake. I met my first goal of 68 lbs that year. I originally maintained it for a couple of years but now have managed to gain back almost 25 lbs this past year. Now I am back ready to hit my real goal weight of 145 lbs and start maintaining that for life. I am a newly remarried 52 year old Mamaw of 6 Grandbabies! I am healthy and truly blessed!

Even in maintenance most of us gain a pound or two or three once in awhile and we need to lose them. Maintenance is just part of living ones life in balance.
Welcome and good luck to you.

Hi all! Glad to meet you. I've been on Sparkpeople for a little over 2 years now, and on maintenance for about a year. I just came across this team featured on a Community Highlight post, and thought, "that's me! Over 50 (and then some) and maintaining." so I joined. I hope to pick up some pointers on staying motivated and on track, and offer support when I can.

I look forward to meeting you. Happy 4th!

Well, I started to write an intro and it turned into a blog. So I guess I need to write a proper intro.

I've really been in maintenance mode for about a year, just didn't admit it to myself. This is foreign territory for me. I made it to within half a pound of my goal weight in Dec. then stalled out. But doggone it, I made it into the neighborhood! I have a normal BMI, have been keeping up a decent exercise routine, have used moderation in eating, only found 5 pounds while on a cruise...sounds official to me! So here I am. emoticon

I live in north Texas, but am a Wisconsin transplant. Crazy me, I'm planning to move back north when I retire in 6-7 years. Not looking forward to living in snow country again, but it will be good to live near family again.

OK, enough about me. I'll wander on over to the discussion threads to get to know more about you guys.

Hi
I'm Lynette from beautiful Calgary, Alberta, Canada, single mom of 2 adult daughters.
I have passed my first goal weight (i.e. I believed I could do it!) and am moving toward my "real" goal (Can I do it?). Maintaining at that first goal weight would be fine. My numbers are not large and losing a pound seems like a big accomplishment but now that I am just 3 pounds from the ultimate goal, I sure would like to hit and stick there!
Edit/Addition Aug: I made it!

Hi, I'm Karen, 57, from California. Back for a 2nd try at losing weight with Spark. First time was a little over a year ago and I lost 25 lbs. quickly and easily. Then I had hip replacement surgery and did some backsliding but… I'M BACK!!! I know what works and tracking food, exercise and information really works. Looking forward to meeting all of you on the team.

Hi all

Thanks for the welcomes posted on my page. :-)

I'm Kathie - a 52 yr old owner of a design & remodel firm in Portland, Oregon. I started my weight loss journey late in the fall of 2012 and reached my goal of 39 lbs lost in May of 2013. I went on to lose a little more, which felt like it should have been my real goal, and I've been maintaining within 4-5 lbs since then.

One of the things I did to help me reach my goal was take up running (with the help of the rookie 5k your way program). I've kept that habit, and I'm working on adding some cross training now. These are all very new to me, as I've not been athletic at all my whole life. I liked to walk and hike, but never in a million years thought I would end up being a runner! Spark People has been so good for me on so many levels!

I am here at Maintainers because I would like to learn how to feed myself properly for maintenance while running and adding the cross training, and also have and share encouragement with other maintainers.

Positive change is always good.
Small manageable goals that can be easily reached to propel you on to more of the same add up to big building blocks.
Good luck with your journey.

Losing and maintaining are both difficult and when one has injuries it certainly makes it more difficult. That's when my favorite saying comes into play: activity up - fork down.
Try to keep your attitudes good while going through difficult times.

Hi!
A loud hello from an 85 year young Great-great-grandmom from India.
Been married almost 70 years.
I have severe mobility issues because of my over-weight. Have had a knee replacement 5 years ago and a nasty fall 3 years back. After which I have a phobia that I just can't walk unless a care giver is propping me. I use a cane but need myself to be held by someone on the other side. Blessed with a big joint family and a live-in nurse, but this is a phobia I need to conquer. I am on weightloss drugs too and an alternative therapy as well but need to control my diet & get a little more physical activity. Hence need all your support & encouragement

HI! Been on maintenance for a couple of years now. Still on Spark because I have NO willpower and need the accountability. Right now I am recovering from a knee injury induced by playing with small children, so no exercise for a few weeks. Keeping the weight off with no exercise - talk about a challenge!

The only restrictions any of us have in life are those we place on ourselves.

Losing the weight is the easy part. Maintaining is a lifetime of ups and downs and continual learning how to live life to the fullest and still maintain the exercise, activity, food balance.

I think this team might be what I need...I joined SP in 2007...lost all I wanted to lose in less than a year (30+ lbs), but just the last year or so have gained about half of it back...maintaining is difficult and I'm looking for something to help...I'm less stressed than I have been for awhile and that will probably help a bit. Thanks for helping me start again...Sharon emoticon

Good morning. I've been maintaining for almost 11 months, aiming for the "magic" year mark. I know it's not magic, but consistency, but still... (-: Anyway, am looking to learn from others trying to find their way on the maintenance path and look forward to being part of this team!

Hello, all!

I just joined the Maintainers team, and noticed this team.

I am 66 years old. I retired in 2008, and I guess I got lazy, and got bigger and bigger.

I weighed 127 while I was working. From laziness, overeating and inactivity, I got up to 152 pounds. I hated the way I looked and how my clothes no longer fit.

I joined SP, and then one day suddenly go discouraged and quit. It was very silly thing about my Nordic Trac treadmill showing that I had burned some huge number of calories per mile, while my FitBIt showed only 94 calories. I got so angry and frustrated that I have up, and quit SP! I had lost down to 138! Then I when back up to 152.

This time around, I have found a weight loss program that really works for me. It is fun, easy, and successful. Now have lost the 15 pounds to reach my goal weight of 137 since mid-April.

My new method is so easy, I have decided to now lower my goal again to 132.

I am interested in the support of others in my age range who are successfully maintaining.

I will NEVER again become discouraged, and quit.

So nice to be here!

Hello All. I've joined this team because I've lost over 60 lbs., and although I'm not at my goal weight I don't want to ever be that heavy ever again. It was horrible not being able to put my shoes and socks on without difficulty. I have many months before I will be at my goal weight, but it will come one day. I'm sure of that. Nice to meet all of you. God bless.

Don't feel like a failure, Susan. We all have our 'issues' when it comes to maintaining and sometimes it is seasonal.
Having eight children makes it difficult for you to not eat on the run and not get in regular just for you exercising.
I really don't have any concrete ideas for you other than to just get back to basics in your mind and on your table. Eat less of the meat and more of the vegs that you serve the family and don't eat out for awhile as you have no control what is in restaurant food (sodium and sugars hide in flavor).

Hi, my name is Susan--hit my goal weight on SparkPeople in April of 2011; but unfortunately, I have gained 20#'s! I'm SICK and this 'stinkin' thinking about myself is having a horrible adverse effect on my ability to even KNOW where to begin AGAIN! I feel like such a failure!

Can anyone help to direct me to the 'losing weight' path?? I KNOW what to do..I just can't seem to find the MOTIVATION or desire!!!! Any tips?

P.S. I'm 51--have 8 children 22, 21, 20, 19, 16, 14, 10 and 6.

I never set out to lose weight, because I hardly needed to. I needed to get my cholesterol and triglycerides down, and the weight loss was a side effect of the overall healthier diet. So as of today, I've hit my "goal weight" of 125. Not only do I want to keep off what I've lost, but I really don't want to keep losing. A few pounds variation, of course, is OK.

My regimen includes Aquacize 5-6 times a week, and eating only occasional simple carbs and added sugars. I eat anything I want, except simple carbs and added sugars. And I found that my desire for them dropped once I got used to not eating them. I've been a vegetarian for a long time, so the saturated fat was not a problem.

By the way, when my lipids were last drawn in November, everything was good except the LDLs, which were barely elevated at 113. And of course, the HDLs can always stand to be higher. So it's working, and I want to keep on feeling good.

Hi there!
Well I am not ready for maintaining but since it is the crux of why I have yoyo dieted most of my adult life I thought I would join at the start looking forward to when I reach my goal. I have no trouble losing the weight. I can do it and eat healthily but need some help when I get there. So what better way than introducing myself to you now. I am a cup half full girl and this time I will make it. emoticon

I joined SP 2-12-07 and took weight off steadily for several months...Lost about 30 pounds and 2 jeans sizes...felt really good. Now I am gaining and can't seem to get back on track. I start each day with high hopes, knowing it is doable but lose my motivation by late afternoon...I just need a fresh start and some motivation. I want to get below 140 and STAY there this time...

I changed the setting on my personal page to allow everyone to open it up. I have been with Spark People since January 2007. I finally got to my original goal weight last July. My goal now is to keep the weight from coming back on by maintaining the healthy lifestyle I have had for the last few years. Logging in daily to Spark People helps me do that. emoticon

Welcome to the team, Sarah. Congratulations on your weight loss. I definitely think you have the right idea about continuing to track food. I do that and I also weigh regularly. Both those things have helped me keep the weight off.

Looking forward to getting to know you.

Sarah, Again welcome to our team and to getting to where you are now. You are right in taking off the pounds slowly so that you establish good habits that become easier as time goes to becoming routine.

Hi! I am 54 years old and have been on SP for about a year and a half. I reached goal weight last week and now I am looking for advice/ideas/tips on how to maintain for life! Not too much to ask? emoticon
I took the weight off very slowly so I hope that by doing what I have been doing I will be able to keep to this weight. If I lose a few more pounds that will give me a little room for Xmas but I will continue to track every morsel (even at Xmas) as I know this works. In the past I always put weight back on when I stopped tracking.
I love cycling in the English countryside. I love dancing too! I occasionally go to the gym. I hate running! There! I have said it!.....but I admire people who do. (My DH ran in the Great North Run half marathon last weekend) I love all animals , particularly dogs.
Looking forward to being part of this team. Love Sarah

Thanks for sharing your story with us. You are so close to maintenance you aren't too early to join us. You will learn from most of us that there is no secret code to maintaining. Really!
Life is still there to get in our way, it's just that mostly we have learned how to not let it sabatoge our health.
We each have our own way we do this and I am sure that if you participate in our 'How are you doing today' thread that you will see this.
Again, glad to have you here. Keep up the great work.

Hello! I'm new to the group. Here is some info about me:

I began losing weight in 2009 due to the beginning of some medical issues - high blood pressure and high cholesterol. My doctor suggested losing weight to help. Well long story short I joined Weight Watchers and over 15 months lost 106 lbs. I got my lifetime membership. I was able to maintain only for about 2 months and then weight started to creep on. I kept trying though. But it continued to slowly creep. Then WW changed to the Points Plus. Great I thought, that will give me just the kick start I needed. Well, for me the Points Plus was a bust. My weight continued to creep. They adjusted the Points Plus. Again I thought great, now things should happen. Well I kept gaining an losing the same 4 lbs with the adjusted program. Don't misjudge me here. I think the WW program is fabulous. I learned a lot about eating healthy and dealing with emotions and eating situations. I would recommend it for anyone starting out losing weight. But the Points Plus just did not work for me with my eating style and habits. So, in June 2012 I finally quit WWs and came full on to SparkPeople. After doing SparkPeople for a couple of weeks I figured out that the WW program didn't work for me because I can't handle the "free fruit" option.

In June I had 28 lbs to lose to get back to my goal weight. I have 15 left to go, but thought I would check out the maintenance team early. I just turned 50 last December (I don't feel 50 though). I will get back to my goal weight. I know I can. I believe maintaining is possible, I just need to find what works for me. I'm hoping I'll get some great ideas here on this team site.

I thought that tracking calories was going to be hard. But I'm finding the SparkPeople tracking is actually easy. I track almost every day! SparkPeople is working for me.

Here's to you maintainers! You are the envy of us all!

Hi. I didn't just turn 50 or just enter maintenance. I just noticed this team and since I fit the criteria, I thought I would join.

My name is Sue. I lost a total of 75 lbs. I took me over a year to lose it, and I have kept it off a long time now. I decided to get healthy when I turned 50. I am now almost 66 and am still working out every day and eating healthier and healthier all the time. I have become pretty fanatical on eating healthy!

At 40 I looked more like 60, and now I feel I look much younger than in my before picture from 1988.

First I just got strong. I had never lifted a weight in my entire life. Then after I got strong and older, my bucket list got a little crazy--trying some really off the wall fitness stuff defintely meant for a much younger person. However, I love doing the crazy stuff. After doing just the gym for a long time, all this other stuff is quite refreshing. It is also harder than lifting weights.

I still do traditional gym workouts too (weights and cardio). I will be 66 next month and just filling you my application for social security. I really feel old now--but very healthy!

I will never go back to being heavy as long as I can move my body, I will! I say I will be the one in a wheel chair in the nursing home still trying to lift weights.

Along those lines, I did become a fitness instructor and do teach some classes for seniors. I still teach other less traditional fitness as well.

Hi, I'm Marilyn. Just joined the team today. I reached my goal weight about 6 weeks ago and then immediately went on vacation and had tons of other parties and celebrations in Aug. Now I am back under control and want to learn how to maintain.

I just turned 59. I am a retired librarian, which means I love to read and use PC's. I love my new IPad. The down side is that most of my pleasures are sedentary. I do love nature hikes, though and we have a great local park system. I just celebrated 31 years of marriage. No kids or grand kids. Love camping modern style (no more tents these days), but camping season is winding down in Ohio. I do watch quite a bit of football. And I just joined a Biggest Loser team that starts in 10 days. Looking forward to meeting everybody!

Keep Sparking!
Marilyn

Greetings,

I reached my goal weight in April after almost a year on Spark, losing 57 lbs. Since then I've been gaining and losing the same 3-4 lbs, hovering around goal weight. As others have said, I believe it is harder for me to maintain than to lose. At 63, I've lost weight before, but never been able to sustain the loss before finding SparkPeople.

After 4 months I have hope and healthier habits. As a retired teacher, working part time, I also have more time for me. My husband and I have 4 kids, 9 grandkids, and try to travel as much as we can.

Hi team -

I turn 50 next month and am looking for an active maintenance team. Today is my one year Maintenance Anniversary! It's been an interesting year, with a lot of consistency and a few pit-falls. I am learning as I grow, and am proud to have mostly stayed the course.

I look forward to getting to you you folks!

Hello all! Just a flyby as off to the store but wanted to note that I am returning to spark, have been here before (a few times lol) but had computer problems recently and a hiatus and now am back. Anyhow, I am a 50+ maintainer of a more than 100 pound weight loss that took really decades and have been lower than I am now and higher. Currently had been working on 25 pounds put on quickly over the last two years when I've had some problems. Had briefly gone below that but I only want to reach 125 pounds now with the goal being December 30. I consider myself ALWAYS a maintainer as for me, relosing small gains is a HUGE part of what maintenance means regarding weight. Now approximately 14 to go.

See you later, must away!

Hello everyone. I'm Ev and I have been at goal weight for three weeks now. I didn't think I'd ever see the day! I'm 65 and this journey has been a real challenge for me. I'm in the habit now of having good healthy food and doing exercise. I believe I'll be able to do so since it is now second nature. Visit my Spark Page to find out more about me. From NE FL have a wonderful week and remember to make good choices and smile!!

I'm new here. I'm 70 years old, and I am happy to say that I'm healthier and in better condition at 70 than I was at 30 and 40. I do Jazzercise and Curves, and I walk 10,000 steps a day. I'm giving up my couch potato ways, and I feel much better.

Hi....I've been maintaining on Spark for almost 4 years now....just ran across this team. Guess those of us that are older than 50 do have special challenges in maintaining, so belonging to this team appeals to me. I'm 73 and trying to remain active as well as eat a healthy diet.

Glad to have new members. It is an indication that people are making their goals and want to maintain them.
Maintaining is not easy but it is doable if you keep you eye on the process and don't slip back into your old ways.
