Hey Team,

I'm back after taking an 18 month break to pursue a couple of marathons--MCM and NYC--I used to work here at SparkPeople (Coach Nancy) for almost 5 years, but looking now to reconnect with old friends and connect with new ones.

2015 brings me heading back to the race distance I love the most--the half-marathon--long enough for a challenge, but does not require the training that is involved for a full. Hard to believe in a few short weeks I will be celebrating my 9th running anniversary and will embark on my 10th year--the first time I have ever done ANYTHING more than a few weeks or month. I still love running today as much as I did back in the day.

HAPPY RUNNING!

Hi all,

I'm still figuring out these forums so if this isn't the place to introduce myself as a new team member my apologies. I'm 44 years old, soon to be 45, and live in Portland, OR. I run to clear my mind and stay healthy. On a good week I'm able to run 30-35 miles, I just completed the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in Las Vegas this past weekend, was a great time and I highly recommend the race. I also recently signed up for my first marathon, running that in October 2015 so plenty of time to train. Happy to be a part of the group.

Hi--I guess I'm a Master by age: 52, but certainly not at running. Have been running off and on since the late 80's, did one disastrous HM (ha) in '06 and am now training for another in the fall. Older and wiser, I think! Along the way I've gained some weight and would like to lose it. Glad to be here!

Hello Master Runners-40 and over,

I've been searching for a SP team that might help get me eventually running. I was a distance runner when I was much younger and would often wake up to a 5 to 10 mile run (just to start my day). I have dabbled with running on and off throughout my life would get in shape and run a 10k, do trail runs, and stayed in pretty good shape throughout most of my 20's and 30's. In my 40's although I had some medical issues (related to being a woman), went through menopause very early in life and have had other issues related to that, one obvious symptom being weight gain and a change in my metabolism. I just turned 50 this last June and when I initially joined SP I was the peak of my weight (I even weighed more than I did when going to the hospital in labor) Augh!

I intially lost 30lbs with SP but have gained back slowly 15 of those pounds when life got really stressful. I've recently returned to Spark People to lose more weight and to get myself moving. I'd love to be able to run again!! I'm feeling although that I really need to build myself up to this.. to walk, walk, walk, walk... first and lose weight to NOT damage my precious knees. I feel at times like I hear that gun going off and I just want to fly so I walk & then jog just a little just to get some of that adrenaline a chance.

It's like holding back a race horse. Just gotta get this weight off of me and be careful.. be safe.

So I'm glad to have found the Master's team. Hope I find myself running with all of you one of these days.

Thanx for the emoticon

You’ve got to stick with it. Change doesn’t happen overnight—not meaningful, lasting change. Practice regularly, whether it’s leg raises or gratitude exercises or positive affirmations. Make it part of your daily routine if possible.

You need patience (goes hand in hand with the persistence mentioned above). It’s seldom a straight shot to your goal. You’ll have setbacks and hit plateaus. But you’ll also have breakthroughs and make great leaps forward. If you feel stuck, don’t lose hope.

Hi, My name is Ann and am an inconsistent user on Sparkpeople. I took up running two years ago more for the challenge of doing it - have always hated running. Now at 58, I actually love it. Was sidelined last year with a torn achilles tendon that needed surgery to repair...not from overuse.. I was fooling around in a swimming pool and slipped and ruptured the tendon. Have come back slowly and just completed a 5K (First on the First) in 32:56. Am training for 1/2 marathon in May and depending on how that goes may try a full marathon in October.

Can't wait to meet all of you.

Ann

Dec 6,2014 - 5K Jingle Bell Run - Columbus OH

Hello... I'm new to the group back to running after a full year hiatus due to a back injury. I'm not sure if I could get back to running halfs but I'm excited to be back to running! Some days I know I'm just dogging it but I'm on the treadmill everyday. I love road running but I have to limit it because of my back.

Conquering instead of crumbling!

Hi,
I'm new to team as well. Signed up last week, now "introducing" myself. I've been a runner for awhile and took a 2 year break and continued to eat like a runner. I'm now trainIng for the New Orleans Marathon in February. It'll be my first marathon in my new age group (55+) and I have no doubt it'll be slow and not very pretty, but it's time to jump back into it. Looking forward to sharing "war stories" with you all !

Hi,
I'm Teri. I'm a very sloooow runner. Some people can walk faster than I can run. I did complete a 5 K 2 yrs ago. Time 46:34. I never walked, believe it or not. It was the Portland Me old Port half & 5 K and it was about 9,000 degrees that day in July. In credibly the 5 K starts out going up a hill! Anyway, now I want to run a 5 K again and I signed up for the Run like a Diva 5 K in Myrtle Beach in April. My daughter might run the Shamrock Marathon in March and if she does I might "do" the 8 K - meaning walk/run. They say they are walker friendly.Right now I'm dealing with a sore knee so I mostly walk and run a little. Today I did a practice 5K and got 47 min with more than half walking. (But it was perfectly flat) So that's me.

Hi,
Started running again around last October and have done a few races here and there. Not new to SP, having been here about 2 years ago, but am definitely in a better place to take in the information given. Glad to have found the 'not so young, at least in years' team. Hope you all are injury-free and your runs are smooth ;-).

Hi everyone! I just turned 45 (yay me, new Age Group!) and I've been running for 4 1/2 years. I've completed 5 full marathons and 30 half marathons and just got certified as a Running Coach. I enjoy races and helping people achieve "their first" My next goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon at the New Orleans Rock n Roll Marathon in Feb. My husband's a runner too and he'll be doing that race to qualify as well. The running community is awesome!

I'm hanging in there! Running/walking every other day and my legs feel as strong as could be. They feel like they could go and go and go. No problems at all there. My lungs are probably my problem (lifelong asthma) ... coupled with the hot flashes. But I'm working on that. I've been keeping track of my blood pressure and heart rate and they are amazingly good considering past heart trouble. Blood lipids are good. I passed a stress test with flying colors. I just need to work on cardiorespiratory endurance and I'll get a little better each time I train. My first 5k is June 23rd, my second July 13, my third July 20th. I'm doing the 5k distance in 42-52 minutes now, depending on how I feel.

And in my head I'm definitely a runner, no matter how slow I might be, because I have decided that's what I am. I'm currently reading Hansen's Marathon Method.

I am MOSTLY having a great time. I am very excited to have found something I love to do. I am disappointed to have to racewalk when I get a hot flash or a bout of nausea, though. And yesterday I had to outright stop because I was so nauseated. (I'm not pregnant!) I haven't exercised hard in a long time and I'm that age... so I just need to learn how to deal with it. It may be that dehydration (as Owl20 suggests) has something to do with it and I should not drink coffee since I go in the morning before it gets hot. I will try to figure it out.

Hello. I'm Larisa. Just discovered in the last couple weeks that I am capable of jogging and I am hooked. I am going to go out and get some good shoes that won't hurt my super-wide under-pronating feet and start training for my first 5ks and half marathons. I am 47, almost 48.

Hello!

I'm a runner who started running two years ago at 41. I just recently completed my 4th half marathon, am thinking about a marathon, and am looking for another couple of halves to have fun with this year. I'm also working on improving my speed, and weight loss is part of that plan. As I am currently between races and as I find it really difficult to follow a training plan and diet, especially during those months when my mileage is higher, I thought it would be a good time to focus on my weight loss goals.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here.

Hi.... I'm a returner to spark people but have been running on and off since last year and after my first 10K in October I was hit with recurrent illness, so with a 13.1K tomorrow, thought I would sign back on here. I haven't been able to train as well as I would like, not lost as much as I would like and am in need of encouragement and so.. well I am here.

I have 3 1/2 marathons booked for this year, a tough mudder later in the year and really would like to do a Marathon if I can step up my training.

Oh and I turned 40 in January.

Not new, but back like a bad penny. I took a hiatus from the Team as I had little expectation of running through the worst of winter, but I've now signed up for the Sun Run, a 10k in Vancouver, BC, so I'm back in Runnerville and glad of it! I've done two Dreadmill training sessions and one outdoor run/walk, yesterday. Only 5k, but it feels good to be back at it. Thanks, PDQ1203, for the poke!

My name is Jeannie and I'm 43. I have been running for 11 years. My favorite races are ultras, because I love running all day at a comfortable pace through the woods, and the aid stations and camaraderie are great. My favorite road race distance is the 10-miler, mainly because in a half marathon at mile 10, I think to myself, "Hmm, if this were a 10-miler, I'd be done now!" However, I've done a lot more half marathons than 10-milers, and I enjoy all the distances. My soon-to-be 11YO daughter and I are beginning to train to run the 2012 NYC Mini (10K).

Hi, I'm Eileen and I was officially a Master when I began running 25 years ago. My daughter joined her HS cross country team and I wanted to see how far I could run. The answer was 30 seconds. Yes, seconds. That was completely unacceptable. It took 6 months but I ran my first 5K in 30:51. As they say, you always remember your first time. Both my daughters became marathoners and I've accompanied them to Boston several times as a spectator.

I've been lurking on SP for 3 years reading and learning but only became active last month in my 145th week of maintenance. Something just clicked and I've come out of the shadows.

The race is not always to the swift, but to those who keep on running.

Maggie welcome to the team! 2 of my daughters ran cross coutry in high school and swore they would never run again. The oldest has run 3 half marathons and the 2nd one is going to run a half marathon with me next July! Both have said it's much better to run for yourself rather than a coach. I am proud of both of them!

WELCOME TO THE TEAM!!!!

My name is Maggie and I am a 41 yo that is about to run my first marathon in March. I ran a lot of X-country in high school (20 years ago), took a very long hiatus and then picked it back up again before I turned 40. Found this group through some mutual SP buddies.

Welcome Paul! I was going to say you look like a very young 41 year old, but that must be your 6 y/o in your pic! LOL!! Welcome to the team! I never thought I would say this, but I enjoy running. Started last spring (at then age 53) and yesterday I did about 6 1/2 miles. Me!
I wouldn't even run across the street!

This is a great team with some wonderful people! Welcome!

Hi, I am Paul! I am 41, married and have 4 kids (6, 4, 22 mos and 5 mos). I am in the army, currently going to grad school at UMass, Amherst. I have always been active, but started seeing my activity slow down and my weight and waist line creep up. After our 3rd child, I was up to about 210 lbs and did weight watchers with my wife to get back down to a reasonable weight. After our 4th child, I was up over 200 again and needed to change some things because I was heading in the wrong direction.

I joined SP shortly after our 4th child and started getting serious about eating healthier and exercising more. Since then, I have lost just over 20 lbs and 5% BF, as well as fitting in clothes that I haven't worn for a long time. My running and swimming have improved substantially as I have gotten lighter and stronger and developed more endurance.

I am signed up for a few 5ks this fall. I would like to to a few more 5mi/10k/10mi races and maybe build back up to another marathon. I ran Portland, OR in 4:03 when I was 30 years old and ran Lincoln, NE in 4:25 at 36 years old.

I try to swim twice a week for a total of 3-4 miles and run 4 times a week for 20-25 miles. Last month, I made it over 100 miles running and am on track to top that again this month.

SP has really given me focus to improve my nutrition, eating and exercise. The community is great and very supportive.

Happy running to you all!
Paul

Hello Team! Just joined sparkspeople today and your group today. I am 52, and have been running for about 8 years, but took the summer off with the heat. Now I need to get serious again and lose the summer "blub". Ran the Phoenix Marathon (1/2) last March and registered for the half again next March - so need to get my training in high gear. It is my goal to also lose 30 extra pounds. Keeping active hasn't been my struggle, but keeping my weight in check certainly has! Looking forward to keeping in touch with all of you! Best wishes with your running and your health goals!

Hi, I'm Natalie. I've been running for a few years and am currently using the Galloway program to train for my first HM in December. I'm 46, do dialysis research and love to bake.

I'm with you there. The best I get is a feeling that the experience *is* going to be fun after all once I've battled my way past the first kilometre mark : )

Welcome Debby! I can *so* relate to your post. I'm a lifelong walker who gradually took up running in my mid 50s. I can comfortably run 12 minute miles, but would really like to get into the 10 minute range.

I also have never experienced a runner's high - except when I crossed the finish line of my first all running 5K (that was emotional though - not endorphins!). I was elated for days after that! emoticon

Welcome to the team, Debby.

I've never experienced the "runners high" either. I suspect that I'm either not running fast enough, or I'm not consuming the correct liquids to bring on the "high". emoticon

Hi everyone! I have always been a walker and just added running to my workout last spring at the age of 53. I never thought I could run. I use the Jeff Galloway method and have worked up to a 12 minute mile that I can usually maintain for a 10K.

I have to admit, though, I have never experienced a "runner's high". I don't think it exists. But I do feel good when I'm done!

Hi! I'll be 50 on Saturday (half a century!) and I've been running since October 2011. I run three days a week, so I am less likely to injure myself. I usually run 15-20 miles per week.

Atm, I'm doing the "improve your pace" program on Jeff Galloway's Easy 10K app by lolo. Starting week 9 tomorrow. My longest run, 12 miles, was Friday, and I did okay. I'm no speed demon, but I have endurance. Which is good, considering one of my main goals is to burn calories.

I'm looking forward to seeing the challenges.

Hello Team.

Looking forward to joining you all on our running journey. I have been a walker all my life. I started running at the tender age of 55. DH and I ran a 5K and I was hooked! I'm now running very slow 10Ks and looking to improve my time.
