After a year since my previous post on this thread, I have tried the naratriptan, (generic Amerge) and found it to work well for me. I am still using up my Maxalt, but have used the naratriptan several times now with good relief of pain after about two hours. I did have one episode in which I got very nauseated, with blood pressure a little elevated - like 149/90, but this finally resolved and I eventually went to sleep, though it took much longer than usual. It was a little scary, since I had also started taking an SSRI medication, and have been concerned about potential interaction and the "rare" possibility of "serotonin syndrome". My doctor and pharmacist convinced me it was very unlikely to develop this problem, citing many other patients using both medications. I'm still a little wary, but so far so good.

I was so surprised (and thrilled!) when the generic Amerge came out! A 'script for 9 pills went from $70 to $12 for me. THAT was a great thing!

Take care,

Kelli

Insurance sucks! Sorry to hear that. I was excited when they came out with the generic, but it doesn't cost much less. But it works for me, so I won't complain!

I've had good results using Maxalt, after having unpleasant side effects with Imitrex. Now I have new insurance and doctor with my new job, and was told they don't cover Maxalt at all, and I will have to take generic Amerge. I haven't tried it yet, as I still have plenty of Maxalt. I hope to find the naratriptan (Amerge) to be good for me. I don't mind trying it, but don't like the idea that I don't have a choice without paying out of pocket for something other than the naratriptan. There is no way I can afford the Maxalt without the insurance. I also have to get a 60 day Rx so it costs the same for a few pills as for 16 pills. I wish I could get a sample to try before buying the 60 day supply. I hate to waste things, especially when they are so expensive and can help someone else. My current doctor's office has a policy of not accepting samples from manufacturers at all, so I can't get it that way. I thought of calling my previous doctor to ask if she has a sample she could give me, but not sure that is ethical. I'll have to see how this goes when I actually need it. Maybe I should get the naratriptan Rx well before I run out of the Maxalt, just to make sure it will work for me. Any opinions are appreciated. I'll let you know when I actually try it.

Good to hear it's working for someone else. None of my friends have ever heard of it so I was wondering if many people used it.

Amerge (or the generic) is the ONLY thing that will get rid of my headaches once they happen, usually within an hour. It works faster if I am able to lie down in a dark/quiet room.

Take care,

Kelli

That isn't one of the triptans I've tried. I did read where it has gone generic now, so I may check into the cost of the generic version. I know the triptans are an absolute Godsend for many though! My dad uses Imitrex (sumatriptan). I've tried Imitrex and Relpax, before finances forced me to look into other options. Sure glad you've found one that works well for you!

My doctor has had me on Amerge 2.5 mg for about 10 years now. It is a naratriptan. I have had migraines for over 35 years. This usually works within the first half hour for me. Anyone else using this with success??
