to our team, Kathleen! I'm so glad you've found us!
emoticon emoticon emoticon

Be encouraged! Fasting is an individual thing. The husband and I are older too, and are finding that we can't totally follow all the fasting rules either. Our father confessor is very understanding. He told us a story of that one of our older Greek members (who has since departed this life) told him. She said that when she was young, her mother told her, "Fast when you are young. When you are older you probably won't be able to fast as strictly." Our priest says that if you can't fast as completely from foods as the church suggests, you can deny yourself other things. The point of fasting is to practice saying "No" to your desires, so that when you are tempted to sin you have the strength to say "No" and turn away from the temptation.

Welcome Kathleen! I too was overjoyed when I found an Orthodox team here at SP. I grew up and spent most of my adult life in the OCA, and I am now in the Antiochian Archdiocese. I am sure you will work out or have already worked out with your priest a way to fast that meets your health needs. And I am sure you will do the best you can. All of us are always learning about our faith. Looking forward to getting to know you and offering support and encouragement as we all travel this road together.

Greetings in Christ! My name is Kathleen. I decided to just check and see if there was an Orthodox team, and I am overjoyed to find that there is! My husband and I are new Catechumens in a wonderful OCA congregation in Kentucky. We are older, with health issues, and we will never be able to adhere strictly to some of the fasting, but we want to do the best we can. We are eagerly learning about Orthodox faith and practice. I look forward to having another community to support my faith!

The Lord upholds all who fall, and raises up all who are bowed down. Psalm 145:14

A monk was once asked: What do you do there in the monastery? He replied: We fall and get up, fall and get up, fall and get up again. - Tito Colliander

The Jesus Prayer helps to lift the whole life, body and soul, to a level where . . . the world is sought and known in the beauty of God, not God in the beauty of the world. - Mother Maria of Normanby

Welcome Diane! I am also a convert. My husband is Greek and we spend every summer in Greece since we are both university professors. I am glad to see so many new members coming to this team. Food is the one passion I need God's help to control. I look forward to getting to know you better.

Glad you are here Diane. I think Spark People has a lot to offer in general, and this team is a great resource for Orthodox Christians. I was born into the Orthodox Church, grew up in the OCA, and now attend a church in the Antiochian Archdiocese, about 25 minutes from our home. I think it is great that we can connect with fellow Orthodox Christians here at Spark People.
Welcome!

Welcome, Diane! I'm glad you found us! There is a lot of material here to read about Lent in "The Fellowship Hall" forum. I was just reading some of it this morning. I'll have to come back later, because there really is a lot!

I'm with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese (Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church in Santa Cruz, CA). How blessed you are to have lived in Greece! I have many Greek friends, as you can guess. I sing the Divine Liturgy in Greek and English every week.

Hi, I am Diane and live 62 miles away from our Orthodox Church. My husband and I lived 6 years in Greece, are converts also and need to learn a lot! We love this faith. I discovered this forum from an icon on someone's personal picture. God is Great and with his Grace I hope to gain more control over my eating practices. I'm thrilled to have found you all!

Welcome! Sorry this reply to your post is so late! We are honored to have a subdeacon on the team! Feel free to post anything of interest regarding either food or Orthodoxy. Don't we have a wonderful faith? There is always something going on -- some feast day or season to observe. When I was Protestant I always felt compelled to "share my faith" even though my faith didn't seem to make much difference in my life. It all felt so unnatural!

Now that I'm Orthodox, all I have to do is talk about my life, where I'm going, what I'm doing -- and I'm sharing my faith. It all happens so naturally! So feel free to share YOUR life, your thoughts on the different seasons of the year, and anything you find interesting!

God bless you and best wishes for success in your weight loss journey!

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever! Hi everyone. I am new to Spark and to this forum. I attend Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox in Lorain, Ohio, where I am a subdeacon. After a lot of halupki and halushki my cassock is a pretty tight fit so I'm hoping this will help me stay healthy. emoticon

Hi Aradane,

I'm a chatecumen too.... but no ETA on Baptism or Chrismation yet. It looks to be a loooong road for me, even though I know it's where I want to go.

I was thrilled to find this team on SP. Like many of you, I am a convert. I started out Methodist as a baby, then my family moved to a charismatic church. Finally, we entered the Christian and Missionary Alliance (CMA) and my family has remained in that church. In fact, I attended a CMA seminary where I received a master's degree.

My husband started out Baptist and became an Episcopalian as an adult. He was introduced to Orthodoxy while at a Protestant seminary in California. He was also the person who introduced me to Orthodoxy.

We were Chrismated together and, after an interesting journey, my husband was ordained a priest in ROCOR. He now serves in the small Western Rite parish that has become a home away from home for us.

I'm grateful to be among sisters and brothers here!

Hi I'm Ranae, I have been on and off Spark for sometime now. I am exploring the Orthodox faith since two weeks before this past Lent started. Classes will not start up until the fall, so I am doing what I was told observing the Divine Liturgy. I can not express how much I love it. It has been a long path, born as a Roman Catholic, to United Methodist, ELCA Lutheran, to now the Antiochian Orthodox Church. I was lucky to find it through a wonderful man where I work, he did not say what he was, but it was his way of doing things, his total outlook on life, and I believe a few other things. When I asked he told me, and the talk started, now 2 years later I am attending church although not the one he goes to, but one that I feel best at, which he says that is what counts the most.

I am so thrilled to find this group, I hope to loose my weight and get help with my new faith too!

Welcome back!!! I'm afraid I wasn't on the internet this past week what with all the 5th week of Lent services and my work schedule. Wow -- I didn't remember you have 8 children! God bless you! And you homeschool! I don't know how you have time for Spark at all! I'm glad your pain has gotten better. I pray God continues to heal you.

Blessed Lent!

Hey! You all know me ~ I used to go by outdoorchick BUT I can't remember my log in info and my friend and I are starting up again together to encourage each other in our health journey.

I still haven't gotten a positive diagnosis on my upper right quadrant abdominal pain I started having last summer (when I gradually dropped off of sparkpeople due to pain just getting too bad to deal with). I've had all sorts of tests run, draining my pocketbook while I was at it, and they all come back normal. No ulcer, no gall bladder issue, liver looks great despite having elevated liver enzymes that indicate liver damage (can't figure out where the elevated enzymes are coming from)...... and so on. It hurts now only intermittently all the way through to my back ... oh and one scan they scanned the kidney as well and it looked great (dad had kidney cancer last year so they wanted to check). And now I'm without health insurance because husband was laid off at the beginning of March. (That has turned into a blessing rather than the curse it usually is :) ) So it will be awhile before I can go back to the doctor for some more testing.

Anyway, I just wanted to come and re-introduce myself to all the "old posters" and introduce myself to the new posters....
I'm Olga and my husband and I have 8 children (8, 10, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22) 4 boys 4 girls. The oldest is about to graduate college in May and DS18 is about to graduate high school followed by joining the Air Force. Homeschooling is going well and my own schooling is doing pretty good, too. I've discovered a few new orthodox websites that I love (orthodoxprayer.com or org, orthodoxmom.com, ocn.net, to name a few). I've been learning a lot lately and I am so thankful to God for directing my path and letting things just fall across my path at just the right times.

I hope all are doing well. I'll be seeing y'all around :)

Hi,

I'm so glad to have found this board. I'm not Orthodox, and won't be converting because family is very Reformed, and we go to a good, small Presbyterian church. We looked into Orthodoxy many years ago though, and I have never lost my love for the Orthodox church. I miss it, and download Ancient Faith Radio podcasts for my work commute. I also follow some Orthodox mom blogs.

Anyone here with a similar story?

Anyhow, thank you for having this group on SparkPeople.

Yep -- sad to say the team IS pretty quiet! Thanks for posting! Please feel free to post anything -- about struggles, about faith, or anything interesting you run across that you would like to share.

Sorry I didn't respond to your post sooner. I haven't been able to be on Spark a lot since I started working full time -- for the first time in about 30 years. I was a stay-at-home mom, but the kids have left home and now my husband has started his own one-man business, which meant I needed to find a job to get us health insurance. God has blessed me and I have found a job as an assistant preschool teacher for 3 to 5 year olds (the way I figure it, I get to be a professional gramma!) But that has really cut into my Spark time!

Yes I seem to be carb sensitive too. I am now following a diet that has me limiting my carbs. I didn't think that was possible on a fast days, but it is more possible than I thought! We kind of eat a modified low carb diet - we do include beans.

If you eat 4 oz. of protein and fill the plate with non-starchy veggies, you will have a full plate. Now -- on Fast days, what is the protein? Well, shrimp and crab, of course, but my husband and I also eat extra firm tofu (it has more protein than the soft), and some beans like black beans and kidney beans, and hummus.

I also bought a vegan protein powder to make smoothies. I mix it with unsweetened almond milk and I sweeten it with whatever low calorie sweetener is handy. I usually use a blender and I may add frozen strawberries and bananas, OR I may add a little unsweetened cocoa powder, instant coffee, vanilla, and ice cubes.

I also try to eat 2 fruits a day - usually I choose from the following fruits: strawberries, half a grapefruit, apple, or an orange.

Sometimes for breakfast we have tofu cubes, sauteed in a non-stick pan with a little sesame oil and soy sauce, then add in some green pepper and onion, for a scrambled tofu stir-fry.

DH and I do not eat rice, pasta, or potatoes now and only just a little bread. The only bread we eat is communion, and the bread after communion, and a very small amount of bread in the form of a melba toast or a cracker or a thin breadstick daily. It is important to continue to eat a very small amount of wheat so that you can continue to digest gluten. If you totally give it up you might have a hard time digesting it later. Since we are eating very little bread, it really makes holy bread taste special!

In place of the rice, potatoes, pasta, etc... you can eat spaghetti squash, or cauliflower rice:
lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/lowcarbsid
ed
ishes/r/caulirice.htm

(I've never had good luck making cauliflower taste like mashed potatoes, but the cauliflower rice recipe is amazing, and even works in making chinese fried rice!)

Also you can put spaghetti sauce on sauteed zucchini and mushrooms -- on fast days add some beans, shrimp, soy burger, or sauteed tofu to the marinara sauce -- here's my marinara sauce recipe:
recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.
asp?recipe=1196045

Or you can try Shiritaki noodles: recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.
asp?recipe=858728

These are low calorie (if they are made with tofu)-- or zero calorie oriental noodles! They are made from an oriental yam and are just fiber (unless they have a little tofu - then they have a little nutrition). Find them refrigerated in an oriental food store or in a health food section of your grocery store.

So these are some food tips! Not good with the exercise though. Maybe someone else can post with what is working for them with exercise.

Yes, I've often thought about how the early Christians had such few food choices available to them during a fast. I wonder what the saints and fathers of the church think as they observe our attempts at fasting!

I don't know about a patron saint for the obese, but our mother, the Theotokos always hears us and intercedes for us!

Please keep posting and let us know how you are doing!

God bless you!

HI...nice to find other Orthodox here..!
But the team looks fairly quiet??

I seem to gain during fasts...since I got older the carb type food sticks no matter how little I seem to eat?
and it seems that the fasting just seems to set my metabolism even more off...
however...
while the early Fathers did not have our abundance or choice of foods I think and pray
I will find some sort of thing to work for me here...
this weight is beginning to affect my health..
both mental and physical...

its hard to walk and exercise right now...
anyone else out there struggling??

I am here to make a new beginning (with God's help)...do we have a patron saint for the obese?
thanks for listening...halfame

Welcome Nikki! It's wonderful that Old Calendar and New Calendar are together for the Pascha cycle! Although I tend to post New Calendar information, and I try to recognize both kinds of holy days (Old and New), I don't always remember. Please feel free to post Old Calendar info! We're so happy you are on the team!

We are old calendar Russian attending Church in the metro Atlanta area :) My signature lists my family. We're actually a pretty active bunch - both individually and as a family.

I actually love it when we have fasts because I find it easiest to eat healthy when we are fasting where as most people seem to find the opposite to be true for them. So I'm really looking forward to the Apostle's fast beginning tomorrow!! I eat so much cleaner and so much more fresh fruits and vegetables :) The kids and hubby aren't as thrilled as I am (well actually DD16 said she is looking forward to it) ... but that's ok.

Welcome Erica! I'm sorry to hear about the ongoing family disapproval -- that can be tough. Among my relatives it wasn't a big deal -- problem is it isn't important enough to talk about. None of them have any interest.

We're glad you've joined our team!

Hello! I'm so glad to find other Orthodox on here! My husband and I converted to Orthodoxy a little over three years ago despite ongoing family disapproval. I'm looking forward to getting "plugged in" on here to more Orthodox. :-)

Welcome, Chrisia! Yes! Truly He is risen! We're happy you've joined the team -- and great work tracking your Pascha calories -- I didn't dare. Maybe next year I'll be brave enough to do that!

God bless you,

Hello all,
I posted on the "What's for dinner tonight" thread first, and then saw this one.

I used the search engine on the "Team" page and put in "Orthodox Christian" and did not find your group....strange!

The way I found you was by opening the large list of all the religious groups and scrolling down. Glad to be here. My Orthodox name is Seraphima after St. Seraphim of Sarov.

Welcome! We're so happy to have you on the team! I see you are from the Chicago area. I lived in and around Chicago for over 20 years. Now we're up near Madison, WI but our son is in college in Chicago, (North Park University) and my daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids live right in Chicago, so we come down frequently.

I look forward to getting to know you!

Welcome, Debby -- we're so glad you've joined us! Yes, I must admit I use Lent as a reason to diet, AND a reason to clean my spiritual house as well, and get ready to celebrate Christ's holy resurrection. Don't worry about doing that -- I don't think there is anything wrong with that as long as dieting isn't the ONLY reason to observe Lent. After all gluttony is a sin that I know I constantly struggle with.

So glad you have joined us!

Glory to Jesus Christ! And I thank God I found Orthodox Christians on SparkPeople. I wasn't sure what I was thinking when I decided to begin a lifestyle change journey at the beginning of Lent, but maybe the two are meant to come together. Who am I to question the reasons things are put in my path.
I am an Orthodox Christian in Cleveland Ohio. I was a convert from the Protestants 19 blessed years ago. I try very hard not to use lent as a reason to diet, but I lose some of my best weight during Lent. I am looking forward to researching this site for "vegan" recipes.
