Hello!

I am Jill, 45 yrs old. I have had 4 spine surgeries and my neck is fused at every level except 2 and have degenerative disc disease. I have been dealing with chronic for many years. I have a spinal cord injury and nerve damage. Now dealing with another herniated disc l5-s1, so now have pain in my ankles/feet in addition to my pain from neck. I feel everyday is a fight to not allow my pain consume life as it has since 2010.

Hoping to get to know everyone and hopefully give support as well. Our loved ones try to understand, but they truly cannot grasp what it is like to deal with so much pain each day.

I am all in...one day at a time. I CAN DO IT!

Jill L.

Hi everyone! I am Kelsey. I'm 18. I have been suffering from chronic pain for just over 4 years. About 3 years ago I had to be pulled out of school. I've had two surgeries and seen about 20 doctors. We are still not sure what is causing it and the pain is getting worse but I am hopeful that we will find an end soon! I am a singer which is what I love most in the world. I am fortunate to have amazing parents that understand my situation and support me however they can. Because of my age, the chronic pain has been very isolating. I have been needing to find some people that understand that it is just more than a muscle cramp occasionally or a stubbed toe or something. Sorry if this was a bit of a ramble, I haven't slept in a few days so my brain is a little all over the place.

Hoping to be able to find support here and support everyone else :)

Hello everyone!

I'm Heather and I live in Topeka, KS. I have been suffering from post surgical chronic pain since 1998 as a result of several brain surgeries on the right side of my head. I had relief from seizure fr about four years before they returned, but the pain is constant. The only time I don't feel it is when I'm sleeping. It was five years before my neurologist found a medication that would give me any relief but he is rather cautious in what he would prescribe because most pain meds can trigger seizures and I would rather deal with the pain than have a seizure any day. It's been seven years since my last break through and I don't want to break that record! Thanks for listening emoticon

Hello All

I'm Shannon and I live in Rosebush, MI with my husband. Am 45 yrs old and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia about 3 years ago on a good day my pain is at a 5. Sleeping is almost impossible but the depression from the stress knocks me out till the pain wakes me back up. Nasty cycle.

Hi. I am a 45 year old mom who was diagnosed with RSD (aka complex regional pain) in 2009 of my left leg. I consider myself very lucky to have been diagnosed within 6 months of the onset, but it's a battle every day. I gained 40lbs in less than 2 months from lumbar injections that were mixed with steroids and I have been maintaining this weight ever since. Needless to say I stopped the injections! This weight has got to go, but the pain is sometimes so overwhelming I just can't move. I work full time as a paralegal in Manhattan, but I live on Long Island. By the time I get home I am so totally exhausted physical exercise is just not something I want to think about. I am about to join a new type of gym called KoKo Fit and I am hopeful I will be able to handle it. It is all low impact and designed for many different levels. I joined this discussion for tips on how to push through the pain to get this weight off and feel better!!!

Hi, I just searched for and joined the team at the recommendation of my SparkCoach. My name is Jan. I have been using Spark People for five years and was doing very well with my weight control until I was involved in a severe car accident almost three months ago that has changed my life. The vehicle I was driving was struck from the side by a truck that ran a stop sign. My vehicle flipped/rolled four times with my head hitting the pavement on each flip. I didn't fracture my skull but I have severe, constant pain at the base of my skull, in my neck, shoulders. I was also left with a scar on my shoulder, and permanent "chocolate-colored" eyes from the severe bruising that occurred after the accident. I've gained thirty pounds since the accident, and I'm feeling pretty low and despondent right now. I'm on medications for pain, and muscle relaxants. I don't seem to be able to stop "comfort eating." I am ready to take two steps forward today. I want to regain control of my life, even if I can't control the pain. Jani

Hello, I'm Carey. I have fibromyalgia, with symptoms starting when I was 19. (I'm now 30)
I also have an autoimmune disease that also cause aches & pains.

For a long time I've tried to deny the existence of these things. I thought "I'm a young person, I shouldn't have chronic pain, this isn't fair!" But then I realized that life doesn't always turn out the way we want. I'm still trying to find out why life led me to this. There has to be a reason.

I'm trying to exercise more, even taking an arthritic aqua aerobics class with a handful of 80-90 year old women (love them!) and just working on gaining as much mobility as I can & discover how to live the best life I can despite how I feel on any given day.

Gentle hugs to you all.

~Carey

Hi all, I'm Nina. I have degenerative disc disease in my neck and I have had surgeries in both shoulders due to an incident when I was a teacher. Because of both of these, I can not lift my arms over my head and even just reaching forward hurts. I have had 3 cervical epidural injectìons. They helped some, but I still have the pain and the limited mobility.

It is frustrating because I can't do any form of weight lifting or even raising my left arm during a workout. This makes it much harder to get my heart rate up. I basically do the treadmill and Walk it Out or a walking dvd. I also try to get to the barn to ride my horse 2x per week.

I hate feeling limited in what I can do. It is good to find a team where other people are going through what I am.

Hi, I'm Karen and I just joined this team because of having chronic pain with having Rheumatoid Arthritis. I'm on the best regimen of RA drugs that I can have I believe. I was diagnosed in 11/08. I'm on one of the strongest drugs for RA called Humira. It's a biologic to help slow down the disease and possibly even stop it for a period of time. I know that once this med. kicks in (it takes anywhere from 2-6 months or more to kick in) I will feel alot less pain and will be able to move around better but I also know that I will always deal with some pain and know too that some days will be worse than others. It does feel good to find a team where others are dealing with pain too and the problems that are caused because of not being to exercise like others can that don't have alot of pain.

Hi! My name is Lynn and I live in a small town in eastern Northern Colorado. I just joined SparkPeople earlier today, and I'm looking around the website to get to know it better. I have not yet started, but I'm excited to learn more! I have been disabled since 2008 when I had a bad car accident (a drunk driver slammed into the back end of my car and pushed me into the car in front of me emoticon ). I already had spinal stenosis and other problems resulting in two lumbar fusions back in 2003 and 2004. The accident caused severe whiplash, and I had two cervical fusions in 2011 and 2012. I have chronic pain in my back that doesn't go away, and I am very limited in my physical activities. I have been through several physical therapy programs, none of which have helped much. I would love to be able to do water exercise, but I would need to travel about 25 miles one way to a therapy pool, and I am unable to drive. Oh, boy! Do I ever sound as if I'm on the pity pot! Well, in a way I am, because I'm so frustrated with over 5 years of chronic pain and limitations! If anyone out there has any helpful advice on simple exercises that I might be able to do, please reply!

Have you tried water exercises? All of your joints and organs are floating and it takes an enormous pressure off your back. I've had a "bad back" for 30 years and the water aerobics class I take at the YMCA is the best workout and most pain free exercise I've ever done. Walking is great but it buts more pressure on those vertabrae and pounds on those discs. You should be able to get a prescription for aqua therapy if you can't join a YMCA. Welcome to the team, my name is Sandy Pudoff and I've only been around about a month.

Hi Michelle-Welcome! My name is Sandy Pudoff and I am a new member to Spark also. I am not new to RSD though, I have had it for 19 years in all 4 limbs. I know a lot about RSD having tried everything I could find, went thru Stanford and Mayo pain programs, had all the ganglion blocks, sympathectomy (RFL). I spent several years in a wheelchair because I had lost all the muscle in my arms and legs. The only treatment I haven't tried is a spinal column stimulator and that is only due to my severe nickel allergy. Medtronic made special leads for me that didn't contain nickel however the insurance company wouldn't approve their use because they weren't covered by the standard warranty. Turned out for the best for me. I used strong meds and exercises to get my body back. It took several years of daily pain, but I was in pain anyway and at least this way I was accomplishing something. You would never know today that I have RSD/CRPS in 4 limbs. In fact, I just completed the nationwide 2 mile walkathon to raise funds for research for RSDSA.org. I used to judge how my day was going by how close I could walk to my mailbox at the end of my driveway.
You will find several others with RSD/CRPS on this team who all have different ways of coping with their pain, disability, depression, and weight loss. Welcome aboard!

I am glad I found this Team. I am doing the best I can . I have a lot of faith that sooner or later I am going to get better. Or at least that is my desire more than anything else. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I started a month ago , but I didn't go nowhere.
Why? I am finding everything I do tiresome and very difficult. I am trying to continue and get somewhere with my fight for a better life. My health has been going down in the last 5 years. I am 73 and recently I am experiencing quite a bit of pain with this injury of a sciatic nerve. Of course that has nothing to do with my continued to eat things are not beneficial for me. I believe depression is the cause of wanting more sweets, is my weakne

Hi, I'm Janet. I'm using spark coach right now and this group was recommended to me. I have multiple issues that mostly stem from poor body construction. club feet, lymphedema on the left side, scoliosis with added problems of a bad car accident, arthritis pretty much everywhere else, hiatal hernia and the newest edition is a splenic artery aneurysm, which is the only one that doesn't cause me pain at this point, so I'm ok with that. I tend to self medicate with chocolate, which is not good for multiple reasons, bothers my hernia as well as putting on the pounds. I need to find better ways of dealing with pain. Any and all suggestions welcome. I do have, lymphedema stockings, a traction machine for my neck, orthopedic inserts for my shoes, a splint for my teeth to relieve night clenching and multiple therapy exercises. I have lost about 55 pounds since I was at my worst, which has helped but I am also getting older and age isn't kind is it. I need to lose another 50 but can't seem to keep the number moving down.

Hello, I'm Connie and I am 40 feeling 30 on some days and 80 on others. I suffer from chronic pain from fibro. and spine issues. I have had spinal surgery of which has left me with less nerve pain but also less feeling in places on my left side. I enjoy working out on most days of the week even though it causes pain because it gives me a sense of accomplishment that I won't let this issue get the best of me.... (well most of the time).

I am looking for a group of people that will understand more of what I am going through and may have suggestions and support as I will be able to give as well.

I am so blessed and o grateful that I found Spark People and this team!

Hello....my name is Michelle. I'm attempting to reignite my activity on sp and looking for ideas to increase my weight loss. I joined weight watchers in January and lost 15 pounds initially, but due to hip/leg/foot pain, exercise has been out of the question. Not only is my foot painful, it is so swollen, I can only wear flip flops. My year started with a severe case of sciatica, then peroneal neuropathy and RSD with foot drop, in that order. I just had a neurostimulator trial and will have the implant on Wed. While the pain relief was great, I'm concerned about how much mobility I will regain. I really really want to exercise, but putting shoes on is unbearable, and I don't yet know if the foot drop will resolve.

Good morning all. My chronic pain is mainly headaches. I suffer from migraines as well as sinus related headaches. Lately I've been having a lot of lower back pain as well. I'm trying to put off going to my regular doctor because I am trying to get in with the VA. I have an appointment at the end of next month and hoping I can wait until then.

Good morning! I am so glad I found this SparkTeam! I am 38 years old, and have major back problems. I have 3 bulging disks, degenerative disks, arthritis, SI joint issues, and lots of other issues. My back pain has made my life miserable, and my last Dr.'s appointment was told that there is nothing they can do to fix the problems, but they can keep me medicated to help cope with the pain. Blah!

I started my weight loss journey in January, and have lost 10 pounds so far. My main form of exercise is walking, and I have logged 157 miles walking a little circle in my garage! emoticon I also do stretching and some strength training with hand weights. This site has been an amazing resource for me, and I know I would have quit a long time ago if it weren't for Spark!

I look forward to meeting others, and making some new friends! God Bless!

Hi! My name is Debbie. I live in Sacramento, California.
I'm a heart bypass survivor. I had a heart attack 11/08.
I'm in chronic pain with my right knee & leg. This is the leg the Drs harvested my vein from when they did my bypass surgery. My knee swells up & makes it hard to sleep because of the pain. Drs are recommending knee replacement.
I also have had 2 carpal tunnel surgeries & have pain in my hands all the time.
A lot of my health issues & pain are related to my being obese. Standing on my feet & legs is hard- I use a cane for balance.
I've been on SparkPeople actively since Dec 2012- I am losing weight-slowly, but surely.
I woke up in a lot of pain this morning, so I am here! emoticon I get most of my support from SparkPeople! I'm also educating myself on various conditions I have been dealing with-Diabetes, NASH. COPD, Asthma, heart Disease, kidneys...
I sure am glad I didn't have all these health issues when my 4 older children were growing up! But it has limited my enjoyment of life with my 2 youngest (20 & 17) children & granddaughters!
I'm currently not on any pain medications due to my kidneys & liver. I am using Thermogesic which helps! it's a cream like BenGay.
Happy to be here! emoticon

Be~Happy~!

Hello, I am Chistine from Minneapolis. I have been dealing with chronic pain for a long time now. I had Chiari Decompression surgery in July of 2010. Before my surgery and they found out what it was, I was having horrible neck pain, right arm pain and headaches. After surgery some of the pain lessened but I have never been completely pain free a day since then. It's always something, whether it be a headache or pain in my neck. I was in two car accidents this past fall/winter and that made the pain in my shoulders and neck worse. I am dealing with that now. I get headaches again pretty bad. I know that some of the pain has be increasing because I haven't been doing any working out at all. I found that in the past when I was more active I would feel better and be able to sleep better. So, I need to start working out and eating right because I know it helps. Also, stretching daily will help a lot. I need to get back into that. I deal with the pain pretty well, but I am on depression meds and have been having a hard time dealing with things lately. Hopefully my new start will help sooner than later.

Hi Wilma! My name is Jane and I have been living with chronic pain for several yrs. I was in a car accident a few years ago and it left me in a coma for 3 days with severe head concussion, fractured cheek bone, torn muscle to my left shoulder, fractured pelvis, and nerve damage to my spine that effected my left leg. After all the bruises and fractures healed, I was left with chronic neuropathic back and shoulder pain. I managed to work for several years, by changing careers over the years to compensate for the increasing pain and physical disabilities. But the last 10 yrs. things become so debilitating, that I finally have to quit.
For the most part, I manage my pain quite well....however some days it gets the best of me. My major concern is that I'm on Lyrica that has caused me to gain weight and with my physical disability, I find it hard to lose weight. Anybody have this problem with Lyrica or other meds? And what worked for you?
Thanks! Jane

Hi, I am disabled as a result of a car accident of 2003. A car T boned
our car on the passenger side, where I was a passenger. He hit the
front car door. It broke a vertebrae in my spine. I was almost beyond
walking for over 3 yrs. because of the excruciating pain I suffered. In
2006 I had spine fusion. It took a full two years to heal. It was a
blessed relief to get rid of some of the pain.

My back never completely stopped hurting. As I have aged, I now have
pain with an infected bursa in my hip, and my SI joint. I have found that
the injections for my SI & the bursa, may or may not work. Most of the
time now, I feel bad.

I can't stop running though. My Mom went into the nursing home first
week in Aug. It has been a very stressful ordeal to go through. Too
complicated to explain. I go nearly every day to visit Mom. She is 93
and still has good mind and looks great. However, she fell in her apt.
and can no longer stand nor walk.

I had breast cancer Nov. 2010 and had a mastectomy. Because of the
incidence in getting cancer back in the other, I decided to have a
mastectomy on the other 08-'11. I feel very good about my decision.
There is always the chance that I can get it back in 5 other places
in my body.

Hello all! My name's Addy and I'm 30 years old. I have an arrythmia (SVT), high blood pressure, and Graves' Disease. I was recently hospitalized for chest pains, trouble breathing, and high heart rate; it was there that I was diagnosed w/SVT (Supra Ventricular Tachycardia). They put me on a beta blocker for the tachy and the arrythmia but my chest pains have persisted these past 5 months. My doc thought it was GERD/heartburn so I made some small changes, i.e. not eating past 8 pm (I go to bed at 11 or 12), avoiding spicy food, but the chest pain persisted as I went to sleep and when I awake in the morning. It it now persisting all day throughout the day and I'm at my wit's end. :( I started taking aspirin but it did nothing (in fact I think it made it worse) and then I tried tylenol (which did nothing). Finally, I tried ibuprofen and voila, no more chest pain. I hope this is a temporary situation as I would really not like to be taking meds for the rest of my life. I'm young and I take care of myself this is so frustrating to be in this position.

I really want to get the SVT treated but my doc wants to take a wait-and-see-approach it seems. :P What do you all think? Anyone here with SVT and chest pains? Did cardiac ablation relieve your chest pain symptoms or do you think I have something else? I feel that since ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory medicine and ibuprofen relieves my pain, my pain must therefore be inflammation-related, wouldn't you think so too? Who knows, it could be unrelated. :( Then I'd be back to square one. Anywho, just thought I'd introduce myself and see if anyone had any advice. Nice to be here and excited to meet you all!

See you around,

Addy

Hi, VJH-W65! emoticon
I have looked into wheat allergies. While I am not allergic to wheat, I am slightly Gluten intolerant (like some people are lactose intolerant). It only seems to have an effect on my digestive system. When I tried eliminating gluten completely for 6 months, there was no change in my pain, unfortunately. But I do hear that some people have had great success with it. Any relief from pain is a blessing!

You might want to try King Arthur Flour's website for buying gluten free products. They have several gluten free flours and mixes. And Living Without and Delight magazines both have lots of GF recipes. There are lots of GF blogs out there as well. Best of luck!

New issue Monday I went for tests onn my feet,
I had no clue that 3 inch needles would be inserteds into my leg muscles and zapped!
OUCH! yes needle was thin but still it hurt like the dickens
electrodes and the zap was like being flipped with a rubber band all over my feet !
Was bearable at the time but since then my feet are hurting badly.
I have a high tollerance for pain I'll never do that test again.

Too funny Judy 'concealed weapons'
I call those 'sheet shredders'
@ $100.00 + for a set of sheets trimming nails are just the wise thing to do.
I plan a monthly Day one as my pedicure pamper every month
Sometimes an early time opens up and I just do them.
I can do my right foot but the left I must snag someone to cut them,
My DH does not want to learn how to do them,
I ALWAYS get an ingrown toenail if he does it his way!
So every 3 months i must go to a foot doctor to have my left foot toenails trimmed

Speaking of toenails I had to do mine today or register them as weapons. It took me 30 minutes to get up when I finished. I now have 4 bloody toes since I can't see as well since my cataracts were removed so thank god I don't have diabetes or I really don't know what I would do about my feet. since I live in a very small community with few amenities and no public transportation.

Hi & Welcome Carrie,
Have you checked the wheat allergies ?
I have read that gluten free has helped lessen fibro,
Cutting all gluten for a week then add it back
My reaction was seriously horrible. food poisoning flu like reactions.
I am in the process of going gluten free
My friend is sending the GF flours to me [small town here]
With so little help yes we must explore on our own.

Hi Judy nice to meet you sounds really bad
we are all really pluggers because that fuels our hope!
I think that if i keep going then i will lose weight and
then i can trim my own toenails
and the twist in my spine will have less torque
As it was it would have just became more painful with no hope a'tall.

Hi. I;m Judy . I am 69, have had a stroke, a heart attack, stage 4 CKF, advanced degenerative disk disease in my lower back and neck (had surgery on my neck but the trouble is back now) and bad arthritis in my hands knees and hips, as well as a numb left foot. I hope no one here is going to encourage me to run a 5k because it ain't gonna happen. I do chair exercises every day and try to watch what I eat but I have had more and more of those days when I wonder if I really want to be here. I must because I am still plugging along doing my exercises and a whole lot of needlework.

Hi, my name is Carrie. I am 32 and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia 12 years ago. I also have degenerative disc disease and just had 2 discs fused this summer. Despite treatment, I seem to still be in CONSTANT pain and no one seems to know how to fix it or even seems to think it matters very much. I am really happy to find a group of people who understand! emoticon

My name is Kaitlyn. For over a year now, I have had chronic, at times debilitating pain in my pelvis. No doctor is really able to tell me what is actually wrong. I have had more diagnosis thrown at me than in a medical textbook, and yet some days I still feel like nobody listens to me. I gained almost 50 pounds since the pain started, and was unable to do much of anything, without falling over. About 3 months ago, I woke up and decided that I should probably use the gym membership I bought. I have lost 25 pounds since really starting up again, and I feel better now than I have in a long time.

Hi everyone. I'm Samantha. I'm 27 years old and deal with chronic pain daily. A couple of years ago I broke a peice of a bone in my foot and went to long under the wrong doctors care- I ended up losing that part, since to much time went by, it couldn't be reattached. Yes it was small, but it had great impact on how I walk- leaving me with foot, leg and hip/ back issues. To this day i'm on 'bout 3 different meds. trying to combat my issues and still they leave me with barely touching the pain I face daily. I keep thinking if i'd lose some weight then my issues would lessen so here I am! Concentrating on eating better currently, with as much exercise as I can handle. But some days I go to work and come home and go to bed- because I'm in so much pain. All support and advice/suggestions welcome! Thanks for reading..have a great day! ~S

Hello all I'm Carol.... I have fibromyalgia. I'm 64 years old, live by myself but try like hell to make the best of every day.
I'm on Lyrica and Vicodin just to be able to "go" each and every day. I hurt when I move or don't move emoticon
But..... I know once I get all this excess weight off this beat up body... things will be better!
I started at 232 Lb. 5/6/12 and as of today I'm 204 Lb. .....looking at "ONEDERLAND" right around the corner. It's crazy but with the 28 lb. weight loss I feel "skinny" already !! emoticon
I go in and out of depression, have anxiety, lots of stress (worrying about my 90 yr old mother in assisted care facility, and she's mean to me, ugh), never enough $$$$.....etc...... So the chronic pain is included in my vicious circle of all the above.
I try to stay positive, cuz I like it!!! Most people don't even know how much pain I'm really in, so I get no sympathy whatsoever.....whatever!!
Anyway, glad to join the team with fellow sufferers, but hopeing to accomplish a better attitude and some ideas from you all.... God Bless You All.... SPARK emoticon

Hell-o I am Vicki a 65 yo 28 year stroke survivor, crushed left arm attached only by the skin
bathing, walking, coughing and sitting cause the bone pieces to shift and spasm,
Spine is twisted neither ca be fixed
Arm fix would be $350,000.00 for a stroke arm that does not work.
I live in Indiana
was a toss up, join depression team or chronic pain?
Chronic pain is why i am depressed, so here i am.

Hello. I'm Tiny. I have rheumatoid arthritis, another recently diagnosed autoimmune disease and possibly 2 other autoimmune diseases (according to my rheumatologist.)
I know pain by its first name - very well. And also depression.

But I believe in a strong sense of humor and dry wit!

I joined SP 5-29-12 and have lost 19.4 pounds since then. I have 27.6 more pounds to lose - and the PLATEAU has moved in!

I also suffer from impatience! I should've lost all this weight by now!! emoticon

I'll just emoticon !

Blessings to all of you!

Hi, Amy - Welcome emoticon I'm so sorry to hear about your pain. I was blessed when I had my cancerous breast tumor removed in 2011 because there was nothing in my lymph nodes and so I had only radiation. My DH is a 2X cancer surviror and he has gone through very aggressive chemo twice. He has a lot of aches and pains that I'm sure are effects of the chemo. I have very bad joint pain and chronic back pain as well as stiffness in my hips and a right hip that can be downright painful most days. Part of my pain is caused by my after cancer medication that I have to take for another 3 1/2 years and the rest is from a messed up skeletal structure caused by a fall I took a year ago. I know that all of us who suffer from pain have a hard time getting motivated to get out and exercise, but for most of us it is the best thing we can do for the pain.

As for losing weight, here is my best advice - not complicated and it works: 1) Use your Nutrition Tracker faithfully, every single day, and print out the daily report on that page so you can make sure you are getting the proper balance of fats, carbs, and protein. This will keep you honest and accountable for your choices. Checking your report each day is critical - you want to make sure you are getting the right % of nutrients and not just eating empty calories. Remember, it is possible to stay within your calorie range eating "junk" but that isn't going to promote weight loss and it certainly won't maintain it in the long run emoticon ; 2) Find a few exercises/activities you actually ENJOY doing and then do them 3-4X a week. If you like what you are doing the chances are much better that you will stick with it emoticon ; 3) Stay active with your Team(s) because this is the place you will get encouragement, motivation, and support - including hugs on those days when things are especially tough! emoticon and; 4) Try to have fun with this journey to slimness and better health! It's a given that if you enjoy something you will stick with it! emoticon

One last thought: it isn't important how fast or slowly you lose your weight. This is one area where 'slow and steady wins the race' is more then just some old cliche emoticon . Spark teaches you a new lifestyle and you need time to re-educate yourself and develop a new relationship with food emoticon

New to this group, not new to Sparkpeople - been struggling with my weight for many years and chronic pain since childhood. Every year it seems the pain is worse...I can't even walk to the corner and back without having to rest because the pain in my lower back and pelvis are so bad. Would love to hear of any solutions other have - I've already cut caffeine out of my diet, as well as MSG and many preservatives. Working on cutting down sodium.

I stretch every morning before getting out of bed, and try to stretch throughout the day. I know that if my weight was less, my pain would be less, but the pain is so bad I can only do a few minutes of activity at a time.

It will be nice to talk with others who understand.

emoticon Heather and Carol-

"I am sorry to be whining when I know my pain is so minor compared to some" = not to worry
hey, pain is pain. it truly helps to get it out. You have been thru a lot don't you deny that.

I have learned oftentimes we find our own answers when we dump the emotional heaviness of the physical pain!

Carol -- I have lupus. I have not taken Cymbalta but I have taken muscle relaxants and Prozac with Vioxx (before it was removed from the market) and the combination worked wonders for me while I was in the working world. I am retired now and I take 4 Aleve which is the prescription strength dose of naproxen, as needed.

I can relate to: 'Basically, I was told, "learn to live with it and don't do any one thing too long'. I really resented it when the health practitioners said that to me.

emoticon

then I heard a joke: You know the one where the patient says 'Doc, it hurts when I do this." and the doc says 'Then don't do this.'? Not real funny but it made me realize I had truly unreal expectations about the level of cure available from the medical community. I haven't given up just realize their limitations, too.

now that I am retired I find it easier to accept these small limitations in exchange for less pain. I use the natural solutions like hot baths, cold compresses, gentle stretching in the AM to prevent injury early in the day that can ruin the whole day. and I don't have to take as many meds.

and to all in pain today, I have learned that if I can prevent ACUTE pain, I can usually abate the chronic pain as well. It is still a daily struggle.
emoticon emoticon
I hope some of this helps.

Hi, I am not new to Spark but am new to this team emoticon After reading some of the posts from team members, I feel almost ashamed to talk about my pain because it seems so minor compared to what others are dealing with.

I started having bursitis-like pain in my right hip back in my 30's but none of the doctors I saw really could say with certainty it was bursitis. It acted like it was about the best I could get from any of them. I didn't worry about it too much because most of the time it was fine. If I walked it would help - almost like loosening up a screw that was too tight. In 2009 I started hiking in the mountains near my home and was doing much better with the hip. Then in Jan. 2011 I had a cancerous tumor removed from my breast and follow-up radiation. I was put on a Rx drug that I have to take for 5 years - one of the side effects of which is stiff joints emoticon I was fine until Aug. 2011 when I slipped on my tile floor while mopping it in sandals - dumb thing to do. I fell flat on my back with my left arm under me. I broke my left wrist and was in a cast for 3 1/2 months. It was after this fall that I started noticing the joint pain and having more frequent pain in the hip and a lot of lower back pain. I went to physical therapy for several weeks and it did no good at all. The physical therapist couldn't name what was wrong - arthritis? bursitis? He didn't know either. I also went to the Chiropractor. He didn't see any evidence of bulging discs, etc. and I was given heat therapy and told to use ice several times a day - and not to walk on hard surfaces like concrete too long or sit or stand too long. Basically, I was told, "learn to live with it and don't do any one thing too long". Great advice but totally impractical because we can't always control the situations we find ourselves in. I was given a Rx for some pain medication and I take it when I absolutely have to - mostly at night so that I can sleep a little better. The problem is that I fall asleep but then I wake up because after I've been lying on one side, or even my back, too long it starts to ache. The Chiropractor also told me the pain that radiates from my back to down the buttocks and side of my thigh and into my knee is classic sciatic nerve pain. So, I'm thinking that when I fell on my back I probably knocked something out of alignment and am pressing on nerves. I am hoping that losing my excess weight will help some.

I'm wondering if anyone is taking Cymbalta or Celebrex and how that is working for you? I will be seeing my doctor next month and I was thinking about asking her if she thought one of those might be an option for me. I like the fact that Cymbalta is non-narcotic - even though they advertise it with a laundry list of side effects that sound worse then the condition I'd be taking it for emoticon Of course, every single medication from plain aspirin to the most potent of drugs comes with a million warnings now. I'd certainly be willing to try something if it would make me feel even 25% better!

Again, I am sorry to be whining when I know my pain is so minor compared to some emoticon Any information or advice would be appreciated.

Carol emoticon

Hi I'm Heather. I'm a 31 year old stay at home mom and online college student. 9 years ago I was in a car accident that ruptured 5 of my disc and pinched 2 of my nerves. I have never had proper medical treatment for my issues. Because of my age the one dr I spoke to refused to consider any procedures. I am currently off of all my pain meds because I hate who I am on them. I had a good 2 years where I had little to no pain, i was a spark people member and lost nearly 30 pounds fast. I walked and worked out hard. But then one night I woke up in sever pain and paralysis. One of my ruptured disc had disengaged apparently and my vertebrae are now crushing each other. They call this degenerative disc disease. I gave up..on life pretty much. I have no self esteem and gained back all that I had lost. I now live where there is no safe place for me to walk, on a busy street no side walks for me to stroll my 2 year old (whom my dr told me not to lift ever by the way) Not sure what I can safely do. My instructions were vauge and i no longer have a dr. I also dont drive so we are stuck inside most of the time. I am glad to see this team, I could use some support. Also willing to share my support.

He is giving me straight to fight every day and to survive day after day and I am so happy for all HIS HELP.I think I make wrong decision to go under knife but I didn't know what else to do.I didn't pray God to show me way and to get me in right direction and I am guilty because I know he will help me decide.Depression was all over me and this is demon who was trying to kill me,and I know it still does so I have to pray God and ask for help.He is Miracle and He can do everything, only HIM nobody else.Thank you so much my dear friend for all your positive energy and wonderful letter,God Bless you all your life!!!!!!

I am a very strong woman. (here you can read the word STUBBORN!)
emoticon

anyway, I was in such pain at one point, and refused to take the medications, as prescribed, because I didn't want to get addicted or reliant on drugs. So, I took only one pill in the morning instead of 2 in am and 2 in evening.
so when I was crying from the pain, I heard a very small voice deep inside, saying 'you do not have to suffer like this. take the meds as directed. you will get better. there is a time for everything. later, you will not need to take the medicine.'

at first I thought the voice was
emoticon
then, I just thought, wow I am going crazy.
and then a friend told me a story.
I can't remember the exact story but this is what I do remember.

this guy is standing next to Jesus in heaven.
and the guy says to Jesus 'why did you leave me to drown in the hurricane flooding?'
Jesus says sadly 'Why did you not take the help I sent you?'
emoticon
that was when I realized that the doctors were trying to help me. So I began to listen to that soft quiet voice in my heart. I took the medicine as directed. and yes, I was a bit loopy and dragging around a bit for awhile. eventually I was able to reduce the amount slowly, as directed.
emoticon
emoticon
my lesson is to be careful when I get so head strong that I don't hear the voice within.
and pain is a noisy resident. sometimes I have to 'take the medicine' to hear.

Slada69 -- please maintain your sense of hope. This too shall pass. you are surrounded by the white light of love, health and healing.

hi, I'm Veronica. I am 61. I was a type A personality diagnosed at age 27 with Lupus.
I never thought I would live this long. And am quite glad I have.
I eat healthy -- just way too much -- for my sedentary lifestyle.
Meds have side effects: increased appetite, weight gain -- go figure!
Disease is controlled but still plagued with extreme fatigue. Some days I choose to walk the dog -- then need to nap (read: ‘sleep for 2 hours!’) -- just to recuperate.emoticon
The pain is similar to Fibromyalgia.
This summer I am at my heaviest weight and decided that fact actually compromises my health and more importantly my sense of humor. (I am a hippie/flower child of the 60's!)

So, I found this site rather by chance ... looking for a calorie counter.
And I found way more than that. In another group I have met some very nice and caring people who are encouraging me to keep accountable.

looking forward to sharing tips and learning how you cope.

Hello, my name is Karen, I will be 37 on the 23rd. I have been over 300 lbs. since high school and am currently @ 350. About 5 years ago I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease in my lower back, but I have been diagnosed and sometimes misdiagnosed with arthritis in my knees, hips and hand several times for over 15 years. I have peripheral neuropathy in my arms and legs, carpal tunnel/tendonitis in my wrists, have had several foot and ankle surgeries, and was just diagnosed with tendonitis in my left ankle and given a cortisone shot yesterday when I went for my diabetic foot exam. I have severe pain in my hips and lower back because of pinched nerves that where not helped my cortisone shots in the past. Sometimes vicodin helps with the pain, but i try not to ask for it too often because i don't want to become dependent; OTC meds and ultrum have no effect. I think my pain tolerance is fairly high because i've had to deal with severe pain for so long, but sometimes it still gets so bad all i can do is lay flat in bed and hope to sleep through it. I know movement is supposed to loosen things up and make you feel better, but it's so hard for me to get started when i know the pain will get much worse before it starts to get better. I could really use some encouragement in this area and i look forward to seeing how others with pain like mine find ways to work through it.

Hello, I'm new to this group. I have been at SP since May 5/12.

I suffer with an workplace injury (May 7, 2011) to my elbow. It goes from just aching in the elbow to a hot burning pain in my arm and numbness in my pinkie finger. I'm taking meds (Gabapentin) but I still have bad days and nights.

I have alot of "downer" days where my pain and my circumstance dictate my mood. I can't help it, I can't get away from it no matter how hard I try. I have my first appointment with a Sports Med DR in 2 weeks. I am hoping he can pinpoint the cause of the pain and what will correct it. Yes, I am more than willing to have my arm cut open so it can be fixed. I've googled Youtube for DIY elbow surgerys but couldn't find any (sorry that's my sad attempt for humor)

My family is tired of listening to me complain about my elbow and the fact that we are now down to one income is taking a toll on my partner and I. (I have now exhausted all avenues of income and is waiting on a Chronic Pain award and for the long term disability company to reply to my appeal of their denial) I had became unemployed a few months back when my employer refused to accommodate my weight restrictions.

I guess what I need is someone out there to talk to about what is going on, how I'm feeling and be able to hear from someone that everything is going to be okay. Also if anyone else has had a Ulnar compression or other injury to their elbow I would love to talk with you about what you do for relief.

I hope everyone out there is having a "good" day.

Hi All; Newbie here. I've had arthritis since I was seven (that was a really long time ago), fibro for 12 years and peripheral neuropathy (non-diabetic related) for the last 5 years. I have found that a good neurologist and a pain specialist makes all the difference. Currently I'm on morphine for pain along with high doses of B6/B12 for the neuropathy. I've been on most of the seizure meds used for neuropathy and they've either not worked or can't be tolerated. The only thing I haven't done to feel better is to lose weight so as of today I'm on my way to better health and becoming more mobile whether I like it or not. I'm determined to feel better physically and emotionally.

Hello all!

I'm 29, mother of two, and was forced into inactivity for a while due to back pain. When I was pregnant with my youngest, she put pressure on my sciatic nerve for the last trimester. I was assured that the pain would let up after she was born. When it didn't, it was assumed I had mild-moderate nerve damage.

Finally, 3 years after she was born, I was referred to a physical therapist. Turns out the pressure she had put on me pushed my hip out of place, and I had been walking on a rotated hip for years. To make matters worse, because we thought it was nerve pain, when I started hurting, I just popped some pills and kept going - which only pushed it further out of place.

Now I'm learning to listen to my body again. It says "ouch" and I stop. I find something more gentle. I make myself stretch.

While it's frustrating that it took so long for doctors to figure things out, I'm grateful to know now, and can finally start making improvements.

Hello, I'm Terri. I am 44 years young, a wife, and mother of 4. I have been suffering from a mysterious pain disorder since 2004, that has taken me from pretty active to pretty sedentary. I have seen every specialist known to man, and they thought I had fibro until I started presenting with strange "bruising" on different areas of my body. I try my best to not let it get me down because I still am a mom, and they still need me. I purchased Zumba for the Xbox 360 a couple of weeks ago, and was doing rather well until my body decided it really wasn't. I hate the fact that all the work that I built up to, is quickly fading away while I lay here on the couch wishing someone would shoot me. But hopefully soon I will be back in front of the TV dancing it up!

Hi Connie I can relate to you I have osteoarthritis to in both legs and I have a compressed spinal cord and 3 disc in the neck bulging so I know the pain isn't easy. For years all I heard from my doctor is that if I lost the weight it would relieve most of my pain. But like you I can't do most of the exercises I have to do so I decided this time I am going to start out slow with just walking a little each day they say that the best thing you can do when you have osteoarthritis the more you move they say the less pain. I been on so much pain medicines that I can't wait to get off them I was on 3 of them now I am down to 2 and working on coming off that one to at the beginning they helped me now 3 years later I am in so much pain everyday of my life so I have to get moving and get the weight off so hopefully it will ease my pain. Congratulations on losing 14lbs I hope you succeed and meet your goal. For now I am going to set small goals and work my way to a healthier life style. I have a friend who lost a lot of weight just by walking so I feel is she can do it so can I. Maybe we can keep in touch and let each other know how we are doing okay good luck with your challenge I know you can do it you are strong keep the faith and don't give up on yourself. emoticonemoticon

I need to be able to keep up with a very VERY
active10, and 11 year old.
I may not weigh in much for I do not own a scale for they end up maken me stop for I dont see the results I want as fast as I want. Yes I know its not the scales fault but I also do not want the 11 year old to think that a life revolves around a number on a scale, Yes she is on the heavy side so I am hopeing that once she is here we can work out together even if it is just walking the dog, or walking around our neighborhood.

I am 57 yrs old and work the 4pm - midnight shift as a 911/police dispatch, which I've done for 39 years. I have always been a caregiver and recently lost my Mom who was my best friend on Christmas Day, 2011. The last several years she had dementia. I'm lucky to be married for 39 yrs to a wonderful man. It seems like I have been dealing with pain for many years..especially the back/neck area and severe headaches. I finally realize I've got to try and take control to find some kind of solution, even if I could just get some relief for a bit. This is why I think I need to talk with others who really understand how frustrating it is and who knows, maybe I can find some answers here. Anyway I wanted to introduce myself and look forward to sharing thoughts and feelings. Have a good day!

With the exception of some major back issues, until May 2001 I was a healthy 130 lbs; loved running; looked the best I had in years. Then..in May 2001, I fell and broke the upper portion of my left femur. In the three months I was on crutches, I gained an unbelievable 45 lbs!! Since then, I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to lose that weight. I swore I would be back to a healthy weight at the ten year mark. That came and went. Now I have my age, increased back pain and heart issues (unrelated to my weight) working against me. But since starting the Spark program and being confronted with what I am truly eating, I've already lost 9 lbs since 1/1/12!emoticon

Hi I am aria. I am 40, and have been dealing with Fibro for about 5 yrs now. I have been dealing with neck and back pain issues since 1998 when I was in a major car accident.

I am on a variety of meds for my chronic conditions - Sleep apnea, Fibro, Poly-Cystic Kidney Disorder (PSKD), High Blood pressure, asthma and the list goes on.

I have good days, I have bad days... and I try my best to do the basic household chores and chase around the 3 step daughters, and my autistic son (Asperger's Syndrome or PDD:NOS)

I am working on losing weight slowly... and if the scale doesn't move that's ok... so long as It isn't moving upward either.... I have been between 286 and 296 for the last year. I am currently at 293, and hoping to change that during the month of Feb but I will not be upset if I doesn't come off as quickly as I wish.

Hope this helps you get to know a bit about me....

aria

Hello everyone! My name is Mary. I am retired due to being disabled (you will read why). I live with my daughter, 4 yr old grandson and 5 month old granddaughter. I'm just getting back online after finally getting my new computer. I have been a member of Sparks for a while but didn't even remember signing up (sometimers...lol). So, this is all new to me. Because I no longer work I don't have the social contacts that I used to and have lost contact with most of my friends (hard for people to relate or understand why I can't do the things I used to) and have no real support. I am looking for motivation, support and hope to make a few friends. Help Please!?! I'm not sure how or where to start. I was probably in the best shape of my life (working out 3x a week w/personal trainer at Bally's Fitness Center) had dropped 2 dress sizes when a series of life events (taking care of my step-dad during and after Colon Cancer...only after losing him to complications following surgery on the arteries in his neck; a house fire...2 days before the closing that would have made the house mine; then having to live in a hotel for 5 months w/my teen daughter while waiting for the insurance company to cover the claim (don't even get me started) I went to get up to go to the bathroom and couldn't straighten up...after 3 days of being off work due to the pain I went to my Dr, then a specialist, (after months of PH which only made it worse) then a surgeon and 2 back surgeries later (lower and cervical w/fusions) I'm worse now then when this all started in March of 2003. I have High Blood Pressure, Osteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia, Spinal Stenosis and my knees are bone-on-bone so this will be the next specialist I go to (who knows what else). This completes my ramble for the day...sorry!

~ Hugs ~ emoticon

Hello all. Joined the site just before the new year and have had a tough time staying on tract with everything/ staying motivated, so starting to take the time to join a few groups, so I can hopefully meet and friend a few people. Am currently looking for another job/ unemployed, ever since a foot injury 'bout a year and a half ago. Unfornately due to bad care- went 'bout 4 monthes until I got a second opinion after the first doctor said I was tip top and knew I wasn't. The second opinion doc. said if his nurse hadn't told him- he would have just thought it happened. Needless to say had surgery 'bout a week and a half after that and currently still have a lot of pain / sensitivity in that foot. Hips and back haven't adjusted themselves to normal either- from the crutchs to cast boot, etc I feel- even though doctors think I should be a ok. Would love to chat with people even, if you've had a close experience like mine. Sometimes I feel like i'm crazy! With people all around telling you one thing and you feeling another...you know?! Anywho- sorry, can be a blabber mouth at time. Looking forward to what this group has to offer and to hopefully add a little goodness to it if I can help! take care all ~Samantha

Hi
Well, where to start. I have been dealing with pudendal nerve damage and pain with chronic pelvic and back pain since giving birth almost two years ago. I'm currently on medical leave. I've been in counseling, physical therapy, had one surgery, and have had two procedures done a the OHSU pain clinic (in portland oregon). I have at least two more procedures that I'll have to have done. I'm also on an assortment of medications. Pain makes it hard to live and hard to exercise and no one quite understands it unless they too are dealing with chronic pain. So I guess I joined this team for support because you all are there and dealing the best you can.

Thank you for friending me, Sheila! I saw you were leader here, and as my chronic pain is just in my way all the time, I thought this might be a good place for me, too! I hope I can learn some things about dealing with pain without meds. I'm managing without them most of the time, now, thankfully, but I've been on them too much with all the surgeries. I hate that.
I joined SP back in 2008, I think? Maybe 2009? I have reset myself to start as I've been offline quite a lot the last two years.

Could have sworn that I introduced myself months ago, but I'm just getting back on track at SP so I thought I would say hi. I'm Tammie and I'm 41 years old, with 3 boys (20, almost 13, 8) and 1 girl (10).

I have degenerative disc & joint disease, uncovertebral arthropathy, facet joint arthropathy, and myofascial pain syndrome (plus chronic sinus infections). I was diagnosed with the degenerative disc disease in 2005, but last year it hit a peak and resulted in a cervical anterior discectomy and fusion for C5/C6 due to herniation and high grade foraminal stenosis late last October. My most painful level has been repaired and things seem to be going well with it, but I still have many trigger points and C4/C5 was beginning to collapse when I had my MRI last May. My joints are pretty stiff, my muscles in my right shoulder girdle are atrophied, and I haven't started rehab yet - hopefully in February.

But I have been cleared to get moving again and, while some days I'm sore and achy, I know that moving will help reduce some of that achiness and tightness.

So emoticon.

Hi all!

I joined the group a couple weeks ago, but I didn't get around to doing an intro.

I'm Joanna and I'm 36 years old. I'm married with two boys(12 and 9).

I began having severe chronic pain when I was in my late teens. At age 20, I was quickly diagnosed with fibromyalgia(although most of my pain was only on the right side). Since then I've had scoliosis, sciatica, and arthritis added to the list. My neck goes forward, there's a twist in my upper back, my lower back is compressed, and my right hip is farther up than my left. Most days I feel exhausted before I ever accomplish anything. My knees hurt me all the time as well as my back and fingers.

I went from being skinny and in the gym to being worn out and fat. I had managed to stay no more than 167 until 2003 and then I quickly gained 100 lb. I am now staying steady at about 240. I do NOT like this fat suit I'm wearing, but I do not know how to manage doing enough to get the weight back off. I hope this time I will stay motivated to do what I can.

I have a condition called Chiari Malformation, which basically means my skull is too small for my brain. It has caused my cerebellum to herniate down into my spinal column and press on my brain stem. It results in severe headaches, high intracranial pressure, dizziness, vertigo, balance and coordination issues, difficulty swallowing, and a host of other issues. It has also caused my high pressure and headaches to increase any time my heart rate increases (due to exercise or stress). I had brain surgery about 4 months ago and it has really improved my pain levels. Although they are not gone, and the condition will always be part of my life, I think I'm finally able to do what I need to do to lose weight....and I've got a lot of it to lose. So glad to be able to give and receive support from people who understand the chronic pain issues.
