Thanks for the welcome LAVENDERLILY. I do need to watch my sodium intake. I try to drink a lot of water, too. Stress and anxiety will also cause my pressure to go up, like in the doctor's office.

emoticon I have found that when my BP creeps up, I need to track my sodium intake. Drinking plenty of water and watching the sodium high sauces, soups and processed foods works for me.

Dottee,

I do weight training with the videos here on SP. Unfortunately, when I went on vacation to my sister's home, I forgot and left all of that part of my workout down there. I also have a Richard Simmons DVD, called Tone and Blast. It's working with weights also, and he gives you some really good core exercises at the end of the 30 minute DVD. I'm champing at the bit to get my weights back to I can continue with the training on SP! My brother is going down to her home next week and my sister said she would send all of my workout items back with him. I also do step aerobics, zumba, Curves HIIT, Curves Body Basics, and Curves Smart Card workout. The more I exercise, the more my body craves, so I give God's Temple what it craves, in this aspect, because is all good! Those feel good endorphins really give me a rush, when I work out, and it puts me on a high, and I love that feeling. I want to feel like that all the time.

Dottee, your a step ahead of me, as I never ate well, when I was younger. I was always on some crazy fad DIEt and I really put God's Temple through some really rough times.

Don't be bummed about taking the BP med, as this is something that God ordained for you, as a wake up call. You now know the urgency of having a healthy lifestyle change, for the rest of your life, and since God had you off the BP medication before, He can do it AGAIN!!!

Be blessed,

Hi Nancy Jean,
I am so glad I found and joined this group. God led me here too. It was so inspiring to read your story and your helpful advice. Other than the steps what kind of workouts do you do?

I always ate pretty well (except for the occasional chocolate candy binge) and was at a lower weight when I was younger and even had low blood pressure at that time.

So far I have been on a new BP medication for 4 days and I have no side effects. But I guess I'm just bummed that I have to take it after I got off of one about 4 years ago and was just taking a water pill.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and encourage me.
Blessings to you too,
Dottee

Dottee,

You've been given some great advice, and I can testify that it works! My blood pressure was through the roof, but thanks to God giving me this lifestyle change, exercise, diet, watching my salt intake, getting the rest I need, and getting at least 10,000 steps a day in, and my workouts, my doctor has started weaning back my BP meds. I go back in April, to see if we can take it down by another pill. I was taking one BP med 3 times a day, that's the one we're cutting back. However, I do take another BP med, that my cardiologist put me on, when I was so MORBIDLY OBESE, to regulate my heart, and I just found out that because of what I did to my body, that I won't be able to come off of that one. Please be very mindful of what you do to God's Temple. I wasn't and now I'm paying the price. However, I've been educated, delivered, and inspired by His Grace, when he sent me to this site!

Be blessed,

- Nancy Jean -

emoticon Dropping the weight will probably help, but also try walking more. Aim for 10,000 steps. Also, try some strengthening exercises. The exercise may also help your anxiety.

Hi Gina,
Thank you for your helpful advice. That is what my strategy for now is to lose that weight because most of it is around my middle and I know I feel better when I weigh less. I do have to take that pill and I started it yesterday. Of course I was nervous about it, worrying that my blood pressure would go too low. LOL Instead was I surprised that it was actually higher than usual because I was so stressed about it.

MYBULLDOGS thanks for the encouragement!

You seem in great shape for 73. It is very common for BP to be higher in the Dr. office, it is called white coat syndrome. Losing that regained weight is your best bet for optimum health but if you do have to go on that pill just relax. I have had high BP for a long time and recently found out that the valve from my heart to my aorta is defective but eventually when needed it is fixable and in the meantime I do need to take meds to keep the top number down. Good for you being an author of children's books.

"The world is one country and mankind its citizens" one of the many truths spoken by Baha'u'llah and "Love is the light that guideth in darkness, the living link that uniteth God with man, that assureth the progress of every illumined soul."

I'm Dorothy and I joined this team last night. I live in upstate New York, am 73 years old, and have moderately high blood pressure. My blood pressure is always high in the doctors office but not too bad at home. i've been on SparkPeople for 5 years and the first year I lost about 20 lbs and was able to get off of one of my blood pressure pills. I have regained about 7 lbs. and now the doctor wants me to go back on another blood pressure pill. I was just taking a water pill for a few years.

So I came on here and found some great information about food and pills. I want to lose about 10 lbs and get my blood pressure back to where it should be. I walk about 6,000 steps a day.

I also have an anxiety problem so I'm very nervous about taking this pill but I will try to relax. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for listening.
