I'm glad you found a used one and hope you can get the other one fixed. We have a spare one for back up.

I am searching for new low carb recipes too. I am trying to stay on plan better too.

Looking back on here I see I mentioned trying to get a freezer. I did find a used one that is working pretty well. I have also gotten some things to try to fix my old one since I was reading questions on it and found the problem I was having had to do with the seal rather than the condenser, probably.. I have clips to put one seal back on and have to figure out how the other one goes on. The biggest problem is that the door doesn't want to close since I moved it to someplace where it doesn't wobble, but I might be able to fix that with magnets. Don't know, though.

I've been really bad about the carb amounts lately. When we were doing the Passion Play there were a lot of carbs at the dinners and I am having trouble cutting them down again. Not to mention that fruit is ripening. I have 10 pounds of peaches on order that I will be freezing. That should last me a long time, though, without me eating it like a pig.

I've borrowed a few books from the library to help me with getting my carbs cut and find more recipes I might like. Also to help with my IBS.

We don't have a food bank here. Just a food pantry run by a local church.

Pets can be so expensive. Our pets are our biggest expense.

Oh, the food pantry does have the unhealthy foods, but also has proteins, meat (if it isn't from Whole Foods it is usually still good), milk, salads, etc. Most is canned foods, though. They have fresh produce, but it is donated after it is rotten, so I don't get that there. They have some cut fruit in the cold food area.

They also have the food bank, but that is almost all pasta and rice. Not really worth going to unless you don't have anything at all.

I have been finding a lot of recipes I want to try, but often they are something that takes a long time and I don't have time to make them. I should start things first thing in the morning and then I may get them done.

Oh, I was looking at a freezer at Lowe's, but I ended up paying for surgery for a dog and a cat, so couldn't get the freezer. Now I am planning to look at the used appliance places. Still might be July before I can manage that. I don't know enough about them to go to a private party and be sure to get one that works.

It's important to find a good doctor like you have.

The food pantries around here give out too much unhealthy food like bread, pastries, and pies. I wish they would focus on veggies and fruits.

Have you looked for a good used freezer. We sold my MIL's almost new freezer for $75. People were fighting over it. LOL.

I'm a scratch cook too as I have to be due to dietary conditions I have. I just tried a new healthy recipe yesterday that another sparkpeople member recommended.

Most of us are addicted to carbs. It's hard to break the cycle. I'm a nurse who did some diet counseling and it was even hard for me. We don't realize how carb dependent we are until we try to change. It's not about just giving up sweets and candy. It's hard.

My doctor is one who keeps up with all the newest research. Maybe that is why the list she gave me is so much like what you listed. I buy all my food on sale except what I get from the food pantry, but right now I don't have any way to stock up. I was trying to get a small freezer because I want to be able to freeze some of the produce I get from the garden (if I get enough to preserve). I may be able to get one in July. All that I am growing is organic or non-GMO. I try to make my stuff from scratch, though there is some prepared since I don't know how to make some things.

Thanks for letting me know about the changes through research lately. Wish I could get my friend to understand that. All she eats are carbs.

Not too long ago everyone was still giving out bad info. This year the dietitians finally got on board the lower carb plans as they had no choice as patients were going to their doctors armed with a lot of info and were scaring the heck out of their uniformed doctors. The doctors, in turn, took it upon themselves to read the latest studies and literature. Some doctors do this routinely but others are woefully behind the times. My new doctor has learned a few things from me but he makes an effort to stay on top of things. We have a very good relationship and discuss the latest concepts at length.

45-60 gms of carbs 3 times a day plus 15-20gms 3 times a day for snacks is the Standard American diet and way too many carbs for someone with diabetes. 150gms of carbs is what most doctors are recommending as the upper limit and my doctor told me that is way too much for me as I have hypoglycemia.

The brain usually does run on carbs but they don't tell you that if carbs are not available then your body will convert fat into ketones for fuel after it runs out of glycogen stores. Though I don't recommend 0 carb diets they are not harmful. We have had several people in the groups on them.

The experts who say not to eat fat because it causes heart disease are wrong. This was a hypothesis put out years ago by a single doctor who had no scientific evidence to back it up. When they finally did start doing studies to prove his theory it was disproven but by then everyone was on board for the bad info, including myself. I was a coronary care nurse for 10 years during the low fat, low cholesterol craze. Eggs are safe and the latest recommendation is to not worry about dietary cholesterol. Most cholesterol is manufactured by your own body and only 15 percent comes from food.

Healthy food is expensive but then so is diabetes and renal dialysis. You pay now or pay later. I buy food when it is on sale and stock up.

Thanks Morticia. I guess the people I have seen around here (other than my PCP) are somewhat behind the times. They are not talking the diet where they did exchanges so much, though the diabetic educators do, but the dietitians say 45-60 g carbs at meals and 15-20 g at 2-3 snacks. That is way more than I normally ate (I think even more than the last couple months when I couldn't stop the cravings).

I may have said something backwards on the dementia and alzheimers, but I know that I keep seeing articles that say that people with diabetes are more prone to them than ones who don't have diabetes. But then I read that the only thing that the brain runs on is carbs, which is confusing to me. Maybe it is because the insulin isn't working right.

There are still a lot of professionals that say not to eat much fats because they are what is causing heart disease. There are nutritionists and dietitians who still say don't eat eggs or use only the white because the fat in them causes heart disease. I do understand that it is the transfats that are really causing the problems, thus I try to eat natural foods (will eat butter rather than margarine).

The list you put seems to be much like what my PCP gave me. I am trying to get back to that (I did pretty well on it from September til the end of March), but having problems with it. The constantly different requirements they give drive me crazy, though. I wish I could afford all organic and grass fed, but I wouldn't be able to eat more than a week to week and a half with that.

I'm an R.N. and am not sure where you are getting your info from but most of it is not accurate.

The old diabetic diet was, just like you said, but that has mostly been replaced now by counting carbs. I live in a very rural area and even in my area most M.D. are not recommending the old 1800 calorie diabetic diet with exchanges. Most experts in the field, like endocrinologists, do carb counting.

High cholesterol is not what causes heart disease. High triglycerides are what causes it and that comes from carbs and processed foods.

Dementia and alzheimers are not caused by lack of carbs.

What you should be avoiding are transfats - they come from hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils and are limited to processed foods like backed goods and some margarines. They are being phased out by the USDA. You need to avoid excess sodium - most of it comes from processed foods, like bread, cereal, canned soup, frozen entrees, etc. High Fructose Corn Syrup and added sugar - both are exclusive to processed foods. Low fat and diet foods which replace healthy fats with sugar - check the label. Omega 6 fatty acids which come from certain oils, like soybean oil and corn oil. Preservatives and chemicals like sodium nitrate and nitrite which have been linked to cancer - they are used in processed foods like conventionally cured meat. MSG in all of it's forms. Canned foods like tomatoes as they contain bisphenol-A from the tins. Farmed fish because it is raised under filthy conditions. Any meat or by products with hormones or antibiotics. Foods grown with pesticides. Microwave popcorn which contains perfluorooctanoic acid. Soy products which mimic estrogen, High calorie, low nutrient foods like junk food, fast food, cereal, bread, pastries, candy, cookies, pie, cake, muffins, pasta, flavored yogurt, etc. Most people also need to avoid gluten. I would also recommend not eating too much artificial sweetener.

I'm not with it today so I'm sure I have probably forgotten something.

You need to eat grass fed meat, safer fish, eggs, organic foods/fruits/veggies, healthy oils like olive oil. Seeds, nuts.

I get totally confused with the different types of diet lifestyles. First off, I cannot understand why a person who is diagnosed with diabetes is told to eat more carbs than they were eating before when carbs are what turns to sugar in the bloodstream. So we choose the low carb eating. Then they say eating higher fat will cause high cholesterol and clogged arteries (I also have seen the reports that sugar causes clogged arteries). So you turn toward the high protein and are told that causes kidney problems. I also was told I need to stop eating protein because that is what makes people fat. The same person has told me I can't eat any fat. Of course, she hasn't studied anything on how different ingredients work. The only thing she says diabetics need to do is stop eating any sugar or fats.

Anyway, how is a person supposed to find what is healthiest when there is so much controversy. It doesn't seem like anything is healthy to eat. I know I can't go too low carb because I lose all energy, but too high carb causes the same thing. Nutritionists say you have to have higher carbs or you get dimentia and alzheimers, but then doctors say that diabetes causes more alzheimers. So how does a person stay healthy? (BTW, those I have known with alzheimers have been more who are slender or thin than heavy -- only one heavy of 5, those with cancer I am the only one who is overweight. I know slender is healthier, but I think that they go overboard saying that overweight causes those things).

I do a M.D.custom designed low carb diet. All low carb diets have certain things in common. I have done phase one of South Beach but not phase 2 officially. Too many processed foods for me. I have to limits carbs too. I try to stay below 100gms a day. If I am doing at 80% low carb I can be successful. Much more than that stalls me out.

I have actually done South Beach and have had success with it. I will do some Dukan research before committing to it - but I really do believe that the best way for me to stay on track with a healthy lifestyle is by at the very least limiting my carbs. I don't agree that staying away from any one thing and having much more meat is the healthiest thing - especially not for a lifestyle change ... I'm really looking to 'jumpstart a slump' ... but maybe if I'm totally honest with myself, my head hasn't been totally 'in the game' and that could be the MAIN reason for my slump.

Thanks for the suggesting of getting a doctor's 'OK' ... I do plan to check this out a little more before committing to it.

Dukan was a popular diet a few years ago. It's another spin on the low carb diet. I have known a few people on the teams who have followed the diet. Since you have someone close to you who does it, it might be a good option for you. I haven't seen a lot of support for it on Sparkpeople but the site isn't really into low carb diets. I think at one time there was a Dukan team. You might see your doctor first and get his okay - make sure you have no existing kidney problems as initially is is mostly protein. In my opinion there are much better low and lower carb diets such as Primal, Paleo, Atkins, South Beach. There is a lot more support for those diets.

At first glance the Dukan diet looks interesting. Another low carb diet of sorts, and I'm all for that. I myself started low carb three years ago to loose weight, and stayed on it not so much to loose weight but because my health is better eating this way.

I've managed my blood sugar this way for 3 years, with good blood tests and my doctor's approval. I might add that as a type-2 diabetic it was 12 years of pills before that, and my blood sugar is actually better, on average, than at any time during those 12 years.

So yes, ... for my health.

Hello everyone ... I've been a member of SparkPeople for several years. I was at a party yesterday and my sister-in-law went on the Dukan plan (due to health concerns) and has done GREAT with it. I'm actually looking around and looking for some information on this before I 'commit' to this lifestyle change . . . (you know, everything in moderation and all that) - but ... what a GREAT way to 'kick-start' a slump that I have been in for some time.

Oh ... about me - like I said, I have been on SP for quite a few years now. I'm a leader/member of the 5% Challenges that I do periodically ... but I always keep trying to learn/do new things and am very interested in meeting all of you and getting to know you and learning some tips/tricks from you! ~ Heidi

My name is Fran, a 72 yo WeightWatchers member trying to get rid of my last 10 pounds. There are several things at work here - first and foremost - Attitude! I am sick of tracking and obsessing about food all the time. Carbs are my addiction and know a high protein, low carb way of eating works best for me, so am going to see if being an active member of this team might help me stay focused on just this for a time.

The other is age - it simply is not as easy at it once was. And also, those first pounds are the easiest - motivation is at its highest, plus cutting back a little here and there makes an impact. Later, after those first pounds go, it takes more cutting back and exercising to keep it going. I feel like I have cut back about as much as I'm willing to, but also feel if I could get to my goal, I could maintain it. So, new year, ready to make a stab at it.

Started out at 199 10 yrs ago. Lost the first 25 pretty readily, then 5 more that come and go - and at the present have come back again. My goal weight is 155 and I am currently 164.4.

So, here goes! Wish me luck.

A thoughtful conversation between friends.

I eat the same way for the most part - I try to avoid grains, sugar, and other highly processed foods.

Hi all. I joined this team some time ago, but I don't remember if I introduced myself and looking through posts I didn't see where I had, so doing so now. My name is Darlene and I am working on eating a bit lower carb than I had been since I have diabetes and IBS so that I can't take the metformin anymore. Currently I have been told NO grain, no white potatoes. Can have meat, eggs, veggies and fruit as long as they don't mess up the IBS. Other than that the list allows dairy, nuts and stuff like that (lost my list, so I'm not sure all the once a day or a little more list). I'm trying to find recipes that I can use that will keep me from the grains but I can make some things I enjoy similar to them, but don't cost much.

Darlene

Welcome.

One of the things I do to stay on my low carb way of living/eating is to only buy foods that are 6 grams per 100 of net carbs or less. It really cuts out the high carb stuff, and reduces the mid range stuff.

I have a few exceptions, like unsweetened peanut butter, but I only have a spoonful or two of that at a time, not a cup full.

Hi y'all! I am Missy. I live in Louisiana. I am 51, married with two older teenagers. I have tried Atkins and it worked great until the holidays came along last year and I went off and now want to get back on it. I know it works even though I didn't go as low as 20g/day of carbs. I am excited to find this recipe board and try my hand at cooking them for me and my family. I know that this time I have to stick to the phases all the way to maintenance. My best friend wants to try it as well and I hope to get her here. Looking forward to getting to know ya'll and make some yummy low carb food.

Love thru Christ,
Missy

HUNGRYWON,
All calories are not the same. The term "empty calories" aptly describes carbohydrates. Typically pure energy and nothing else for "building" a healthy body.

Record what you eat and drink, especially record the grams of carbs, if you get below 60 a day you will see some dramatic changes with little hunger.

James

You may be interested in the new South Beach Gluten Free diet book. I have it and the gleten free cookbook. It's the latest south beach diet book and relies a little less on processed foods. I have all the south beack books and cookbooks. My son and I went on it in 2008 and he lost 120 pounds he moved away and went of it and gained part of it back. I'm sure you joined the South beach team too. The info on the food lists is on that team.

Hello,

I've been struggling with getting rid of 10-20 pounds over the past several years. This amount fluctuates between 10 and 20 and whenever I get close to my goal (145), I always seem to sabotage myself. My worst weight gain happens in my stomach, and I feel like I look 6 months pregnant most of the time.

My best friend has done South Beach in the past, and I saw dramatic weight loss in her tummy! I mean, it was truly amazing...so I figured I'd give it a try.

I'm at 163.4 right now (June 24) and in just over a month I'm taking a trip with my fiancé to Catalina Island and I want to be able to wear my cute shorts, sundresses and such like things AND buy something sexy and surprise my man (TMI?) emoticon

Anyway, I love SparkPeople regardless of what diet I'm on. I also love "clean" food - so I think if I can just tweak what I'm eating maybe it will help.

Any experiences with success on this plan would be more than welcome. I'm looking forward to getting to know those active in the group and getting support and advise and meeting my goal in time for my trip.

South Beach has a gluten free version now which is really nice. They also have a gluten free cookbook. Paleo and Primal are also good for gluten free and also minimal processed foods. I'm on a gluten free diet.

SUNNY112358,
I also had been trying to loose weight for as long as I can remember. I had tried a few different diets, but with no permanent loss. Two years ago I went on a low carb diet. Finally a plan to loose fat and not be suffering with hunger while doing it.

It also controlled my type 2 diabetes without medication after 9 years of pills. So, did not go back to carbs.

Here are a few links to treat recipies:

Hello, I joined a while ago but I don't think I've formally introduced myself. I've been trying to lose weight all my life and I'm fed up, so I've given myself a two-year goal to my 60th birthday. I have found that various versions of Low-Carb work best for me. I am currently doing the Dukan Diet to lose fast as I've regained a lot of weight recently, but I'll eventually alternate with South Beach Diet for maintenance, or Atkins if I hit a plateau. I'm also experimenting with Gluten-Free.
I love cooking, especially baking as I have a boy who wants treats but has also put on weight so I need recipes for low-carb goodies. I hope you can help.

Hi Everyone... My name is Deby...

I have been on a plateau for quite some time... and just recently a dear friend of mine (offline) told me about Atkins along with a great book Sugar Busters... so Last friday.. I started the low carbs by Atkins... I am happy to say I have lost 4 lbs. I am off my plateau... and feeling great...

I thought this would be a great team to interact with others who are sharing their LOW-CARB experiences

Wishing everyone ALL the Best

Most of us can relate. I can lose on other plans but it doesn't address my medical problems and low carb does.

The only way I've been able to lose weight in the past two decades is to eat low carb. Sticking with it is my problem. Actually Sticking with anything is a challenge for me. I exercised (boot camp) regularly for 3 months and lost a total of 3 pounds. Once I miss a day, then getting back into it is difficult. Hope this site (SparkPeople) will help me to stick to my goals.

I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much.

Hi! I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. My name is Jennifer and I am married to an amazing guy (for 15 years in July) and we have two girls ages 8 and 6. Adam and I started low carb last year after he had to start on high blood pressure meds (age 34) and he decided to do something to change his habits. I want to lose about 20# and he has a larger goal. I look forward to learning from you, getting recipes, hints, and support. By the way, after the holidays, low carb is the only diet I have ever desperately craved getting back on! I feel full and when I don't eat this way I feel like crap. Amazing.

If you are on other low carb teams, you may have read this before.....if not..... well here ya go! emoticon

Hi All! I'm Diana, 58 and a Chicago cops wife. My kids are grown and have gifted me with 6 beautiful grand daughters and a very handsome grandson! Bonus! A great grand daughter too! I'm hesitant to mention the name of the plan I'm following...because the name makes it seem less legit. But I gave it a half heart effort in October and lost 11 lbs and over 13". I wasn't hungry, my body began function more regularly and I was sleeping better than I had in years. My lab numbers improved an my doctor was actually a bit giddy about the results. My husband went on furlough in Nov. and I wasn't ingrained enough in the program to keep it up. My routine changes a lot with having hubby home. The good news is no gains during the holidays. I'm guessing while I wasn't falling the plan, the info was in the back of my mind and influencing my choices here and there. Enough to keep me from back tracking. Yesterday I started the first phase over. An 8 week reset that allows plenty of neutral foods and a fair amount of counter carbs. Enough so I don't feel deprived. I'm looking forward to sharing recipes, ideas, successes, support and much more with you all!

Hi
I am new to this, I tried to be lower on carb for 2 weeks in late October (2013) and lost 2 kg (4 pounds) so I want to try to go all the way in. I have 100 lbs to loose and want to do so before end of this year.
I live in Iceland so my English isn't perfect but I hope you can understand me emoticon

I think most of us can relate. I am always glad when the eating holidays are behind us and the cold winter days are over.
