Welcome.

One of the things I do to stay on my low carb way of living/eating is to only buy foods that are 6 grams per 100 of net carbs or less. It really cuts out the high carb stuff, and reduces the mid range stuff.

I have a few exceptions, like unsweetened peanut butter, but I only have a spoonful or two of that at a time, not a cup full.

Hi y'all! I am Missy. I live in Louisiana. I am 51, married with two older teenagers. I have tried Atkins and it worked great until the holidays came along last year and I went off and now want to get back on it. I know it works even though I didn't go as low as 20g/day of carbs. I am excited to find this recipe board and try my hand at cooking them for me and my family. I know that this time I have to stick to the phases all the way to maintenance. My best friend wants to try it as well and I hope to get her here. Looking forward to getting to know ya'll and make some yummy low carb food.

Love thru Christ,
Missy

HUNGRYWON,
All calories are not the same. The term "empty calories" aptly describes carbohydrates. Typically pure energy and nothing else for "building" a healthy body.

Record what you eat and drink, especially record the grams of carbs, if you get below 60 a day you will see some dramatic changes with little hunger.

James

You may be interested in the new South Beach Gluten Free diet book. I have it and the gleten free cookbook. It's the latest south beach diet book and relies a little less on processed foods. I have all the south beack books and cookbooks. My son and I went on it in 2008 and he lost 120 pounds he moved away and went of it and gained part of it back. I'm sure you joined the South beach team too. The info on the food lists is on that team.

Hello,

I've been struggling with getting rid of 10-20 pounds over the past several years. This amount fluctuates between 10 and 20 and whenever I get close to my goal (145), I always seem to sabotage myself. My worst weight gain happens in my stomach, and I feel like I look 6 months pregnant most of the time.

My best friend has done South Beach in the past, and I saw dramatic weight loss in her tummy! I mean, it was truly amazing...so I figured I'd give it a try.

I'm at 163.4 right now (June 24) and in just over a month I'm taking a trip with my fiancι to Catalina Island and I want to be able to wear my cute shorts, sundresses and such like things AND buy something sexy and surprise my man (TMI?) emoticon

Anyway, I love SparkPeople regardless of what diet I'm on. I also love "clean" food - so I think if I can just tweak what I'm eating maybe it will help.

Any experiences with success on this plan would be more than welcome. I'm looking forward to getting to know those active in the group and getting support and advise and meeting my goal in time for my trip.

South Beach has a gluten free version now which is really nice. They also have a gluten free cookbook. Paleo and Primal are also good for gluten free and also minimal processed foods. I'm on a gluten free diet.

SUNNY112358,
I also had been trying to loose weight for as long as I can remember. I had tried a few different diets, but with no permanent loss. Two years ago I went on a low carb diet. Finally a plan to loose fat and not be suffering with hunger while doing it.

It also controlled my type 2 diabetes without medication after 9 years of pills. So, did not go back to carbs.

Here are a few links to treat recipies:

Hello, I joined a while ago but I don't think I've formally introduced myself. I've been trying to lose weight all my life and I'm fed up, so I've given myself a two-year goal to my 60th birthday. I have found that various versions of Low-Carb work best for me. I am currently doing the Dukan Diet to lose fast as I've regained a lot of weight recently, but I'll eventually alternate with South Beach Diet for maintenance, or Atkins if I hit a plateau. I'm also experimenting with Gluten-Free.
I love cooking, especially baking as I have a boy who wants treats but has also put on weight so I need recipes for low-carb goodies. I hope you can help.

Hi Everyone... My name is Deby...

I have been on a plateau for quite some time... and just recently a dear friend of mine (offline) told me about Atkins along with a great book Sugar Busters... so Last friday.. I started the low carbs by Atkins... I am happy to say I have lost 4 lbs. I am off my plateau... and feeling great...

I thought this would be a great team to interact with others who are sharing their LOW-CARB experiences

Wishing everyone ALL the Best

The only way I've been able to lose weight in the past two decades is to eat low carb. Sticking with it is my problem. Actually Sticking with anything is a challenge for me. I exercised (boot camp) regularly for 3 months and lost a total of 3 pounds. Once I miss a day, then getting back into it is difficult. Hope this site (SparkPeople) will help me to stick to my goals.

I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much.

Hi! I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. My name is Jennifer and I am married to an amazing guy (for 15 years in July) and we have two girls ages 8 and 6. Adam and I started low carb last year after he had to start on high blood pressure meds (age 34) and he decided to do something to change his habits. I want to lose about 20# and he has a larger goal. I look forward to learning from you, getting recipes, hints, and support. By the way, after the holidays, low carb is the only diet I have ever desperately craved getting back on! I feel full and when I don't eat this way I feel like crap. Amazing.

If you are on other low carb teams, you may have read this before.....if not..... well here ya go! emoticon

Hi All! I'm Diana, 58 and a Chicago cops wife. My kids are grown and have gifted me with 6 beautiful grand daughters and a very handsome grandson! Bonus! A great grand daughter too! I'm hesitant to mention the name of the plan I'm following...because the name makes it seem less legit. But I gave it a half heart effort in October and lost 11 lbs and over 13". I wasn't hungry, my body began function more regularly and I was sleeping better than I had in years. My lab numbers improved an my doctor was actually a bit giddy about the results. My husband went on furlough in Nov. and I wasn't ingrained enough in the program to keep it up. My routine changes a lot with having hubby home. The good news is no gains during the holidays. I'm guessing while I wasn't falling the plan, the info was in the back of my mind and influencing my choices here and there. Enough to keep me from back tracking. Yesterday I started the first phase over. An 8 week reset that allows plenty of neutral foods and a fair amount of counter carbs. Enough so I don't feel deprived. I'm looking forward to sharing recipes, ideas, successes, support and much more with you all!

Hi
I am new to this, I tried to be lower on carb for 2 weeks in late October (2013) and lost 2 kg (4 pounds) so I want to try to go all the way in. I have 100 lbs to loose and want to do so before end of this year.
I live in Iceland so my English isn't perfect but I hope you can understand me emoticon

I think most of us can relate. I am always glad when the eating holidays are behind us and the cold winter days are over.

I can relate. I once went to an required event where there was absolutely tithing healthy to eat. No low glycemic vegetables at all. And it tasted horrible too.

My goal is to lose 16 pounds by Christmas and another 12 by Easter. I am following Trim Healthy Mama's plan which has a lo-carb component. Due to PCOS, I know I need to keep myself in a lo-carb lifestyle in order to balance hormones and digestion. As I'm sure many of you know, lo-carbing is very difficult at the beginning. I'm just trying to find some good recipes that I can use for life and am trying to develop tools to take with me on the journey. Seriously, how do you do family gatherings when other people are managing their weight with lo-fat fake food? It's difficult to find real food and not offend by bringing an entire meal to the event!

Getting healthy is like getting through boot camp. It's a lot of hard work, and some days you want to quit. But when graduation day arrives, memories of pain and trouble pale in the light of the pride and accomplishment you feel. You made it! You didn't quit.

I am also limited to around 1200 calories a day. Depending on your gender, medical conditions, level of activity, and age this is often the recommended amount. You can easily overeat a low carb diet as many of us know, especially if your trigger to eat is not hunger but psychological.

Hello Debra Anne. I love the low carb lifestye and noticed you and I are the same age. My family history has all kinds of health problems that I am trying to avoid. Atkins.com is not a free site and offers tons of low carb ideas. I personally think you are eating too few calories to be doing low carb - its all about counting your carbs and sugars - then you appetite decreases.
1500 calories sounds more realistic to me. I have high cholesterol - my sugar is normal but keeps creeping up on me. I wish sugar and carbs did not surround me at home and at work.
I have found it is all about having the right foods realily available when I first feel hungry.

Take care. Mackie

I have been here for a few years and have fallen off the wagon more times than I can count but I have made up my mind that I want to do this once and for all. I am tired of being TIRED and feeling horrible because I am not eating right. I need all the encouragement I can get and finding friends that are in a similar place as well as those that have reached their goal or are active in making it happen is what I need. I know low carb works because I have lost 40 pounds in the past and have gained 18 of it back and I am determined to gain control of my life and be healthier and finally....finally...feel pretty :o)

My name is Amy, and I have 50-60 lbs to lose. I have been very successful in the past eating low carb, and haven't attempted to do so, however, for at least 5 years.

Good to be here! Today is Day One. I know the first 3-5 are the hardest, and then as long as I avoid sugar/baked sweets, I will do great.

Nice to meet you all. It's my first day on Spark, so I need to make some buddies for this journey!

I have many health challenges, and obesity is one I CAN do something about!

Hi everyone, my name is Amy...I'm new here but not to SparkPeople. I have done just ust about every diet known to man or at least read info about every diet...however I've NEVER tried Atkins I am excited and ready to make this work for ME once and for all.
I live in SC...moved here in 01 from PA and fell totally in love with the southern lifestyle ;)
I have 5 kids but between me and my hubby we have 7 kids, 3 boys and 4 girls but 2 of the girls and 1 of the boys don't live at home...the girls live with their mother in NJ and the oldest boy lives with his GF about 30 minutes from me.
The other 4 kids are 15 yr old boy that homeschools, a 14 yr old girl in 8th grade who goes to public school, a 9 yr old girl in 4th grade who is just like I was at her age....chunky....and a 7 yr old boy in 2nd who's your typical boy lol....
my hubby and I have been married for almost 13 years together for almost 17 years. He's got about 40 pounds to lose and me...well I have about 150 to lose :( but I'm excited and positive that with Atkins I can do this!!
I'm looking forward to getting to know y'all soon and give the support y'all need and get some as well....any tips for a NEWBIE are greatly appricated ;)

My name is Jim, I'm 53. Married for 25 years. 3 boys (see my picture) - ages 22, 19, and 15. The oldest (the one with the crazy smile) was married just this past May (May 5, as a matter of fact - Cinco de Mayo - yay). He was married by me, in my house, and now lives with us while he continues to go to school. We also care for my wife's older mentally disabled sister - who currently can manage to live by herself, with regular assistance. We have 3 cats - not exactly sure of their ages - but I think they're all less than 4. We named them Grace - a rather large Maine-coon; Buster - a very shy, stupid, but cute as can be Ragamuffin (we think), and Buddie - a black and white I-don't-know-what breed. We got them from the pet shelter. Hobbies - nothing serious.

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Hi. I’m new here and have been looking for low-carb foods. Bread, popcorn, potato chips, pretzels, etc. are some of my weak spots and I need to find some healthy foods that I can eat on a 1200 calorie diet. I have T2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol if that helps. Are there any alternatives I can eat so I wont feel hungry during the day? I enjoy cooking and baking, and have been looking for low-carb recipes to try. I welcome all advice and ideas. Take care and have a great day.

My name is Melissa, I live in Northern California Sierra Nevada mountains. I have been married almost 28 years, we have one grown son who is 25 and who has blessed us with a wonderful daughter in law and our pride and joy, grandson Cooper.
I have in the past done the strict Atkins diet. This time around I am changing the way I eat and trying to limit the number of carbs I eat. Looking to share low carb tips, tricks and recipes.
And hoping to make some new friends.

Hi, Carollee! Welcome!

I don't know what is considered low or medium carb. Atkins and some of the other low carb programs say to limit your net carbs to 20. Net carbs equals total carbs minus fiber. I've read other places that keeping your total carbs under 50 is usually enough to keep you in ketosis.

When you say that you felt like you were losing your mind, were you talking about feeling flu-ish? Headache, light headed, woozie, things like that? That's Induction flu, and it's common as your body adapts to eating low carb and especially as it adapts to dumping the water that is common when you start eating low carb and as you lose a bunch of weight quickly. Try eating more salt or drinking broth. They're both supposed to help. Or taking a small amount of potassium supplements.

I started this plan yesterday and gained 2 pounds so now I want to just eat a whole box of donuts. I love exercise my clothes don't fit and just plain disgusted. So far on track with menu for today and luch vegies at noon. at age 66 almost 67 I am tired of this yo yo not sure what I can do to make my life exciting but here I am.

Hello! I am NOT a chef lol, but am interested in doing better at cooking at home, so when I returned to spark (been here before), I was focusing on the recipe resources here and hence the user name.

I am not totally a low carb person but I tend to eat that way and am now on Day 13 of a modified (by me) version of the old Sugar Buster's program as a help in (again) living a sugar free life.

Anyway looking for low carb recipes because low to medium carb, free of added sugar, works best for my body.

Hi, I've been lurking for a while but I'm trying to get back into the groove of actually posting and focusing better on my structure. I have been doing an adapted version of 'medium carb' I guess, about 50 to 80 carbs a day, I eat higher carb fruit after a meal with plenty of protein and higher carb veggies sometimes too but I only eat at most one high carb treat with flour, corn, sugar, rice or potato a day (sometimes I manage to skip it) and higher carb food always as dessert after a meal with protein and fat and low carb veg. I need to lose weight really slow because I've been yoyoing so much and this is the only way I can think of to prevent it. I must have lost 1000 or more pounds over all my dieting life and gained every one of those pounds back and more. And when I try really strict low carb the books say my cravings should go away, but they never do. So my strategy right now is to work out the healthiest kind of eating pattern I can manage for the rest of my life and eat like that. Weight loss is slow, half a pound per week, but it's working so far (13 lbs down) and I feel I can do this the rest of my life. I use the low-carb recipes for the healthy meals that fill me up before I eat fruit so I can be sure I don't overeat :)

I have found eating more protein and less carbs helps... have hard boiled eggs ready and grab one or 2

Welcome, Fluffy
Since you love veggies this should be easy for you. You can eat lots of veggies and be under 20 carbs if that is what your plan recommends.

Hi all, I apparently have to stay low low carb - I finally hit a trace of ketosis on bioidentical hormone replacement and 5 carbs a day.. weight started moving back down too... slowly-
I can do this but I do love veggies .... even my thyroid book says to do low low carb .. 5 day no carb.. but tracker says a few on things...
so I thought I would join if I get down in weight- add other foods every now and then.. but stay under 20 ?

Hi! My wife and I have made the decision to go low carb for our health (both sides of the family have a slew of health problems we'd like to avoid) and so far so good! We've found great recipes and only one was a dud. Support & encouragement from family is sparse but this is something we're going to do and there's no going back! :o)

Hi Gang! I am going to try l/c diet. I have studied up the last few days, have a friend who has lost a tremendous amount of weight in no time by l/c diet. I did hcg back in 2010 - then had a hysterctomy the end of that year. I maintained quite some time but I have gained back 20 lbs and would love to get them off fast. I blame the weight gain on the surgery but Really know it was my eating habits. (junk) so here we go. Wish me luck. Never done this diet before.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hi , new to the team but not to low carbing. Tried the protein power plan in college and lost a lot of weight but then fell off the wagon and never came back until now. Now I am doing it my way by giving myself weekends off because if I didn't I know that I would "fall of the wagon" completely and never go back. This way if I crave something really bad at least I know I can have it on the weekend as long as I don't go overboard.

Hello everyone, I'm Elly. Just taking some first tentative steps toward trying out low-carb eating. I think it will help if I can make some delicious recipes so I don't feel deprived! Also I LOVE sugar so I am expecting some major withdrawal symptoms, so if anyone has any tips on how to ease in I'd appreciate them. Looking forward to sharing recipes and encouragement with you guys!

Maybe it says that because you add them in after a long stretch of keeping them very low. She recommends something she calls 5x5 foods--Food items that have less than or equal to 5 gm NET carbs not more frequently than every 5 hours. So if you have that at a mealtime, you cannot have more at a snack. It can only be 5 gm at least 5 hours apart. Her mission is to send your pancreas and liver on "vacation", so these small amounts only cause a small rise in blood sugars and resulting excretion of insulin to deal with it. After 8 weeks of that + 30 minutes exercise a day, you begin to add in more carbs, 11-20 gm per meal. I started this last Wednesday, knowing that I'd be giving up sweets for Lent, so maybe it wouldn't be too hard. A few years ago, I committed to the "Core" plan on WW which involved eating only whole grain, high fiber, low glycemic index carbs and no sweets. I did OK for the 6 weeks of Lent and lost about 10 lbs. Figured I could give this a try as I now have the midlife menopausal barrel belly--ugh. Need to give that up immediately!

Welcome to the Team! I haven't heard of that diet. Breakfast doesn't have to be eggs. I think they help keep you full and there are so many different ways to fix them. I have leftovers a lot for breakfast. Or just bacon or sausage so days.

BTW, I did a google and it says "Metabolism Miracle ... eat carbs and still lose" so I am confused? Tell us more about this diet, please.
