Thank you for the welcome to the group. :)
I am back again to SP and have just recently "found" the low-carb lifestyle and it is working! I have struggled for years trying all sorts of healthy weight loss regimens...calorie counting, running (lots), clean eating...etc... I am thankful to have finally found something that is working for me.
I am early 40s, SAHM and wife to my best friend for 22 years.

Hi,
My name is Diana. I am in my mid 40s and still struggling with my weight. I lost about 30 pounds this last year, but am stuck and starting to gain some back. I am interested in eating less processed junk. I am not worried about being super strict on the carbs, so much as cutting way back on the refined/ processed stuff. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired, as the saying goes.

I love yorkies. They are one of my favorite dogs and so sweet and cute. I can imagine what that was like to go through. Hugs.

Hi,
I'm Judy, 64 years old, married to a wonderful man for 43 years, 2 grown children a man and a woman (now), 6 grands and a great-grand. Grands are 24, 17, 15, 12, 8, and 4. Great-grand is 5. Not pets at this time. Have had all kinds of pets all of my life, but lost my beloved yorkie, Sebastian, in 2001 and have no desire to have my heart broken that way again. I am ultra-low carb Atkins to bring my blood sugar under control and now that it is, weight is going easily! My hobbies are piano, word games (especially scrambled words and scrabble), reading, writing, drawing, painting, crafts, watching and laughing at funny movies, and I also crochet, knit, and sew (or did. So much going on no time now).

Hi, I'm Ana!

The only way I've tried successfully to lose weight is LOW-CARB. I did last year with excellent results, losing almost 30 pounds in less than 3 months. Then, different stress and drama sources got me and I slipped of the wagon too many "Just for today" times. I'm trying to eliminate stress getting far from challenges, drama and other things I can control, and getting auriculotherapy to stay calmed, quite difficult in this planet.

I'm following a strict low-carb diet, very similar to the Induction in the New Atkins, I slipped of the wagon once last week and regained some water pounds that, thanks God, I got rid of them. It wasn't nice, so I'm fighting to glue myself to the wagon, no matter how rough is the railroad!

I'm married, 54, have a teen son and a husband, both athletic, and my cat.

I want to get ready of obesity and THEN, I'll follow something similar to the Phase II of Atkins. Trying to eat as healthy as possible for my budget.

Have all of you a very nice week!

Thanks, God for all the Blessings that we have and all the Blessings that we are receiving!

Hi, I'm Lynne and I was recently put on a low carb diet by my doctor as a way to help with my anxiety. I have been on one before with really good results so it wasn't too hard to try again. I also have a very strong sweet tooth and was trying to figure out a way to cut down on sugar . I am currently trying to keep my carb intake between 30-50 grams a day.

Welcome to the team! It sounds like you are definitely on the right track. Maybe you will lose weight so well you won't even have to have surgery.

Good morning!

Thank you for welcoming me to the team!

About me:

I'm 53 years old. I used to say "years young" but this past year has left me feeling tired, achy, and OLD. :(

I have finished menopause and they found pre-cancer cells in my uterus. Two months ago I had a complete hysterecomy (sp?) and, thankfully, no further evidence of cancer was found.

The shocker to me was when the oncologist told me that it was most likely my obesity that caused the pre-cancer cells to form. Did you know that menopausal and post-menopausal women who are overweight or obese are at higher risks for certain types of cancer due to the excess fat cells? Apparently, they give off hormones similar to estrogen that triggers cell growth in the uterus. If they are pre-menopausal, those cells are shed when they menstrate. If they aren't menstrating as often or at all any more, the walls of the uterus get thicker and thicker. The average uterus is 4mm. At the time of my surgery, the walls of my uterus was 8mm.

The oncologist met with me again post-surgery as a follow-up. He wants me to seriously consider a stomach band implant to lose the weight. He said I am still at a high risk for other types of cancer (which I'm already at a high risk for due to family history) and he doesn't want to see me back on his patient roll.

That was a month ago. Since then, I've been counting calories and trying to move more (LOVE my FitBit!). In a month, I have lost and gained the same 3 pounds. Worse, I feel tired all the time to the point that I've taken to taking naps on my days off from work. :(

Enough is enough. I know what works for my body. I know what it takes to feel better, have more engergy, have deeper and more restful sleep, and to lose weight. I need to cut out white flour products, SUGAR, and processed foods.

This week I am rereading "The New Atkins for a New You" and purging my kitchen of items that trigger binges. Monday is when I will officially set myself back on the smart-carb lifestyle path to better health.

I am so determined to make this happen that I have scheduled an appointment with my primary care doctor for August 9th. It is to discuss the recent surgery and the potential need for a stomach band. I'm giving myself one year. If I can't lose at least 1/2 of my excess weight in that time (approximately 75 pounds), I will give the surgery serious consideration.

My apologies for the lenghty post. Any and all support will be greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful day!

Joanne

Hi, I'm new to the team & new to doing low carb, but not new to Spark. I've been away for quite a while & have unfortunately gained back all of the weight I had lost & then some. I'm hoping some new teams will help get me back on track, since most of my old ones are inactive.

I seem to crave sweets often, especially when I'm stressed, so I thought trying low carb might break the habit.

Hi emoticon I am new to this forum but have spent the past week on SP. I guess that still means I'm just a newbie all around! I am following the Dukan diet. Today I started Cruising with my losin... Really enjoyed my big cabbage salad with a tsp of mayo and lime juice. (I know mayo is not on Dukan but a tiny bit of fat is better than a bit of carb!) I still don't have the book and so am winging it a bit. Down 7 lbs this week though so something is working!

That's a good amount and should give you some good choices. Maybe nix the beans and grains and the high glycemic fruits and you should do well. I have always enjoyed your friendship!

So glad you are back!! Keeping our carb intake down is very important. The easiest way is to concentrate on healthy foods like fresh meat, fish, eggs, lower glycemic load fruits and veggies, seeds, nuts, healthy fats, and maybe some dairy and legumes if your plan always that many carbs. Rarely some grains like quinoa or brown rice if you are allowed.

Welcome back! I love low carb. It's a great diet.

I love fish. Do you want a crispy recipe or savory?

I fix these crispy fillets - I take 6 tilapia fillets and dip each fillet in 2 egg whites or brush with mayo. I don't like mayo but many people use it. Take 3 ounces of crushed pork rinds and add a a couple dashes of smoked paprika, oregano, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, and pepper. Mix and sprinkle this on both sizes of the fillets pushing ir in. Bake on a baking sheet brushed with 1 Tbs of olive oil at 450 for 20 minutes.

I like this savory one.

2 tilapia fillets (6 ounces each)
1 tablespoon butter, melted
1 teaspoon steak seasoning
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon onion powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
Dash garlic powder

Put fillets on a greased baking sheet and drizzle with butter. Combine herbs and sprinkle on them. Bake covered at 425 for 15 minutes and then uncover and bake until flaky around 5 minutes longer. Sometimes I sprinkle some parmesan cheese on top too.

I am particularly looking for a flavorful Talipia recipe..
I promise to cheer for our team and to work hard to reach my goals.

Hello, I'm Kevin. (waiting now for the 12-step "hi, Kevin!" return 😀 ).

Not new to SP, but only about a year into 'serious.' Try to stay lower carb (less than 100/day), high lean proteins. Don't worry much about fats, eat lots veggies, drink lots of water.

And maybe some wine. Sometimes lots of wine. My bad... :)

Travel frequently, do all the cooking (for four) when home.

Best to all,

KB

Hi, new to this team . I have been reading a lot about low carb lately and have even tried it in the past . Not any particular program. I learned through experimenting that 20-30 carbs max seems to work for me for weight loss and that one way of sticking to it is to have a cheat day once in a while but of course not to go crazy. I try to keep it to a cheat meal though if I can. I haven't done so well since my kids have been out of school though. Stress eating and all but I feel that now I am ready to start again especially since all my summer clothes have become snug on me. emoticon

Welcome to the team! Most of us are on our own tweaked versions of lower carb too. It sounds like you have done well on lower carb. It is the only thing that works for me.

Hi! My name is Pam and I joined Spark People about 4 years ago and lost 55 pounds. I suffered some setbacks and have not done anything for a couple of years and gained back 20 of the pounds I lost. I am finally ready to try again and have lost 10 of those pesky 20 pounds and hope to pick up where I left off. I have tried several of the low carb plans and found Atkins to be beneficial but too restrictive for the long haul that I have ahead of me. I am devising my own plan with high protein and low carb vegetables, dairy and some fruit. Your team looks lie it will fit the bill for me o am looking forward to learning and participating!

Every day is another chance to get it right.

Hey y'all, I'm Missy. I'm 53 with lifelong hypothyroidism. I am married almost 25 years and have 2 grown kids--1 in college and 1 just out of high school. I work as a special ed para and now out for summer. I am not really new to low carb eating. I slipped up on Atkins and just took it and ran away with it. I am now at my heaviest weight but going back to Atkins this week. Atkins is the only thing that works for me as I am a carb (mostly sugar) addict. I didn't exercise with Atkins before but still lost weight. I have neck and back problems and currently doing physical therapy. I have been sitting on butt watching tv when I am at home. My physical therapist and dr both said not exercising will make conditions worse so I gotta do something. I love walking and lifting light weights. Going to pull out the WATP dvds and get busy. Will be checking here alot for recipes. Ya'll have a great day!

I can't eat a lot stuff like that as they trigger me and stall me. I am not into them away. I love veggies and fruit so I tend to eat more of them than many low carbers do.

I went shopping today and I'll be all ready to begin on Monday. This isn't very strict either. She allows Gluten free wraps. It's not as strict as Atkins.

I do something similar to primal and paleo but not as restrictive. Once you choose a specific plan it becomes much easier.

I haven't actually started yet. I'm reading "The Primal Low-Carb Kitchen" by Kyndra Holley. It's very informative and the recipes look good. She also explains everything clearly. I didn't want to just jump into it without understanding the plan. I was so used to low-fat diets that I was very confused as to what to eat.

Welcome to the team! I've never done Atkins either for the same reason. It is a good diet though. Cutting out things like sugar, baked goods, pasta, cereal, and bread is often enough to give most people a good start. Actually cutting back a lot on processed foods really helps. I eat a lot of veggies, fruits, seeds, nuts, some dairy, healthy fats, meat, fish, eggs, cheese, and occasionally beans.

Hi. My name is Judy and I've been on every diet you can think of! I turned 70 this year and took a long look at what I eat the most of, trying to figure out why I can't lose and keep it off (I've mostly done WW). I realized that I always gravitate towards pasta, potatoes, corn, sugar and sweets. I looked into Atkins but realized it would be too restrictive for me to stay on. I really want to be on more of a low carb diet, not a no carb diet. Looks like this team would be helpful.

I'm Maribeth, will be age 56 Wed. 4.20.16. Nothing like a birthday to renew your goals. I was eating LC for a year and lost 40 pounds. Fall/winter 2015 (Sept.-Jan.) fell off my LC plan and gained back 40 pounds. I was so discouraged, I lost sight of my goals and support system of Sparkpeople.
Conclusion:
1. LC plan works for me with hypothyroidism and family Hx of heart disease and stroke
2. Committed to reach my goals
3. Sharing the Spark~~~give and receive support
Bright Spot emoticon Feb.-April I have lost 30 pounds on a LC plan
I want to learn how to make bone broth, kefir, soups and more soups. But not all at once.
First I want to get to know this team and learn from all the information already here.

Happy walker, I see that you are new to LC. Also that you are 71. Well I am 77. I have been strictly LC for nearly 2 years now. I have maintained a 54 lb loss that happened in 6 months. I find this to be a miracle diet and I am not going to quit! Ever, Please God

Hi, I'm Violet and I have done low carb before and had success but couldn't stick with too low a carb count so I have been experimenting. Right now I am trying to stay mostly gluten free but eating between paleo and low carb. So basically I try to stay away from Dairy but am not too strict about it. I am trying to keep my carbs between 50-100 a day as that is easier than 20-30 and seems to work. A little slower but that's ok as I am not trying to lose weight quickly as it won't stay off that way.

Hi team, I'm totally new to low carb, as carbs are my lifestyle. I'm tracking all my food and going for a gradual reduction in carbs right now. I'm 71 and active in the good weather days but slow down at home in winter (except for shoveling snow). I have a lot to learn. This team looks like a good place to start. I'm graphing my carbs and hope to blog that once a week. Shirley in Indiana

I am searching for new low carb recipes too. I am trying to stay on plan better too.

Looking back on here I see I mentioned trying to get a freezer. I did find a used one that is working pretty well. I have also gotten some things to try to fix my old one since I was reading questions on it and found the problem I was having had to do with the seal rather than the condenser, probably.. I have clips to put one seal back on and have to figure out how the other one goes on. The biggest problem is that the door doesn't want to close since I moved it to someplace where it doesn't wobble, but I might be able to fix that with magnets. Don't know, though.

I've been really bad about the carb amounts lately. When we were doing the Passion Play there were a lot of carbs at the dinners and I am having trouble cutting them down again. Not to mention that fruit is ripening. I have 10 pounds of peaches on order that I will be freezing. That should last me a long time, though, without me eating it like a pig.

I've borrowed a few books from the library to help me with getting my carbs cut and find more recipes I might like. Also to help with my IBS.

We don't have a food bank here. Just a food pantry run by a local church.

Oh, the food pantry does have the unhealthy foods, but also has proteins, meat (if it isn't from Whole Foods it is usually still good), milk, salads, etc. Most is canned foods, though. They have fresh produce, but it is donated after it is rotten, so I don't get that there. They have some cut fruit in the cold food area.

They also have the food bank, but that is almost all pasta and rice. Not really worth going to unless you don't have anything at all.

I have been finding a lot of recipes I want to try, but often they are something that takes a long time and I don't have time to make them. I should start things first thing in the morning and then I may get them done.

Oh, I was looking at a freezer at Lowe's, but I ended up paying for surgery for a dog and a cat, so couldn't get the freezer. Now I am planning to look at the used appliance places. Still might be July before I can manage that. I don't know enough about them to go to a private party and be sure to get one that works.

It's important to find a good doctor like you have.

The food pantries around here give out too much unhealthy food like bread, pastries, and pies. I wish they would focus on veggies and fruits.

Have you looked for a good used freezer. We sold my MIL's almost new freezer for $75. People were fighting over it. LOL.

I'm a scratch cook too as I have to be due to dietary conditions I have. I just tried a new healthy recipe yesterday that another sparkpeople member recommended.

Most of us are addicted to carbs. It's hard to break the cycle. I'm a nurse who did some diet counseling and it was even hard for me. We don't realize how carb dependent we are until we try to change. It's not about just giving up sweets and candy. It's hard.

My doctor is one who keeps up with all the newest research. Maybe that is why the list she gave me is so much like what you listed. I buy all my food on sale except what I get from the food pantry, but right now I don't have any way to stock up. I was trying to get a small freezer because I want to be able to freeze some of the produce I get from the garden (if I get enough to preserve). I may be able to get one in July. All that I am growing is organic or non-GMO. I try to make my stuff from scratch, though there is some prepared since I don't know how to make some things.

Thanks for letting me know about the changes through research lately. Wish I could get my friend to understand that. All she eats are carbs.

Not too long ago everyone was still giving out bad info. This year the dietitians finally got on board the lower carb plans as they had no choice as patients were going to their doctors armed with a lot of info and were scaring the heck out of their uniformed doctors. The doctors, in turn, took it upon themselves to read the latest studies and literature. Some doctors do this routinely but others are woefully behind the times. My new doctor has learned a few things from me but he makes an effort to stay on top of things. We have a very good relationship and discuss the latest concepts at length.

45-60 gms of carbs 3 times a day plus 15-20gms 3 times a day for snacks is the Standard American diet and way too many carbs for someone with diabetes. 150gms of carbs is what most doctors are recommending as the upper limit and my doctor told me that is way too much for me as I have hypoglycemia.

The brain usually does run on carbs but they don't tell you that if carbs are not available then your body will convert fat into ketones for fuel after it runs out of glycogen stores. Though I don't recommend 0 carb diets they are not harmful. We have had several people in the groups on them.

The experts who say not to eat fat because it causes heart disease are wrong. This was a hypothesis put out years ago by a single doctor who had no scientific evidence to back it up. When they finally did start doing studies to prove his theory it was disproven but by then everyone was on board for the bad info, including myself. I was a coronary care nurse for 10 years during the low fat, low cholesterol craze. Eggs are safe and the latest recommendation is to not worry about dietary cholesterol. Most cholesterol is manufactured by your own body and only 15 percent comes from food.

Healthy food is expensive but then so is diabetes and renal dialysis. You pay now or pay later. I buy food when it is on sale and stock up.

Thanks Morticia. I guess the people I have seen around here (other than my PCP) are somewhat behind the times. They are not talking the diet where they did exchanges so much, though the diabetic educators do, but the dietitians say 45-60 g carbs at meals and 15-20 g at 2-3 snacks. That is way more than I normally ate (I think even more than the last couple months when I couldn't stop the cravings).

I may have said something backwards on the dementia and alzheimers, but I know that I keep seeing articles that say that people with diabetes are more prone to them than ones who don't have diabetes. But then I read that the only thing that the brain runs on is carbs, which is confusing to me. Maybe it is because the insulin isn't working right.

There are still a lot of professionals that say not to eat much fats because they are what is causing heart disease. There are nutritionists and dietitians who still say don't eat eggs or use only the white because the fat in them causes heart disease. I do understand that it is the transfats that are really causing the problems, thus I try to eat natural foods (will eat butter rather than margarine).

The list you put seems to be much like what my PCP gave me. I am trying to get back to that (I did pretty well on it from September til the end of March), but having problems with it. The constantly different requirements they give drive me crazy, though. I wish I could afford all organic and grass fed, but I wouldn't be able to eat more than a week to week and a half with that.

I'm an R.N. and am not sure where you are getting your info from but most of it is not accurate.

The old diabetic diet was, just like you said, but that has mostly been replaced now by counting carbs. I live in a very rural area and even in my area most M.D. are not recommending the old 1800 calorie diabetic diet with exchanges. Most experts in the field, like endocrinologists, do carb counting.

High cholesterol is not what causes heart disease. High triglycerides are what causes it and that comes from carbs and processed foods.

Dementia and alzheimers are not caused by lack of carbs.

What you should be avoiding are transfats - they come from hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils and are limited to processed foods like backed goods and some margarines. They are being phased out by the USDA. You need to avoid excess sodium - most of it comes from processed foods, like bread, cereal, canned soup, frozen entrees, etc. High Fructose Corn Syrup and added sugar - both are exclusive to processed foods. Low fat and diet foods which replace healthy fats with sugar - check the label. Omega 6 fatty acids which come from certain oils, like soybean oil and corn oil. Preservatives and chemicals like sodium nitrate and nitrite which have been linked to cancer - they are used in processed foods like conventionally cured meat. MSG in all of it's forms. Canned foods like tomatoes as they contain bisphenol-A from the tins. Farmed fish because it is raised under filthy conditions. Any meat or by products with hormones or antibiotics. Foods grown with pesticides. Microwave popcorn which contains perfluorooctanoic acid. Soy products which mimic estrogen, High calorie, low nutrient foods like junk food, fast food, cereal, bread, pastries, candy, cookies, pie, cake, muffins, pasta, flavored yogurt, etc. Most people also need to avoid gluten. I would also recommend not eating too much artificial sweetener.

I'm not with it today so I'm sure I have probably forgotten something.

You need to eat grass fed meat, safer fish, eggs, organic foods/fruits/veggies, healthy oils like olive oil. Seeds, nuts.

I get totally confused with the different types of diet lifestyles. First off, I cannot understand why a person who is diagnosed with diabetes is told to eat more carbs than they were eating before when carbs are what turns to sugar in the bloodstream. So we choose the low carb eating. Then they say eating higher fat will cause high cholesterol and clogged arteries (I also have seen the reports that sugar causes clogged arteries). So you turn toward the high protein and are told that causes kidney problems. I also was told I need to stop eating protein because that is what makes people fat. The same person has told me I can't eat any fat. Of course, she hasn't studied anything on how different ingredients work. The only thing she says diabetics need to do is stop eating any sugar or fats.

Anyway, how is a person supposed to find what is healthiest when there is so much controversy. It doesn't seem like anything is healthy to eat. I know I can't go too low carb because I lose all energy, but too high carb causes the same thing. Nutritionists say you have to have higher carbs or you get dimentia and alzheimers, but then doctors say that diabetes causes more alzheimers. So how does a person stay healthy? (BTW, those I have known with alzheimers have been more who are slender or thin than heavy -- only one heavy of 5, those with cancer I am the only one who is overweight. I know slender is healthier, but I think that they go overboard saying that overweight causes those things).

I do a M.D.custom designed low carb diet. All low carb diets have certain things in common. I have done phase one of South Beach but not phase 2 officially. Too many processed foods for me. I have to limits carbs too. I try to stay below 100gms a day. If I am doing at 80% low carb I can be successful. Much more than that stalls me out.

I have actually done South Beach and have had success with it. I will do some Dukan research before committing to it - but I really do believe that the best way for me to stay on track with a healthy lifestyle is by at the very least limiting my carbs. I don't agree that staying away from any one thing and having much more meat is the healthiest thing - especially not for a lifestyle change ... I'm really looking to 'jumpstart a slump' ... but maybe if I'm totally honest with myself, my head hasn't been totally 'in the game' and that could be the MAIN reason for my slump.

Thanks for the suggesting of getting a doctor's 'OK' ... I do plan to check this out a little more before committing to it.

Dukan was a popular diet a few years ago. It's another spin on the low carb diet. I have known a few people on the teams who have followed the diet. Since you have someone close to you who does it, it might be a good option for you. I haven't seen a lot of support for it on Sparkpeople but the site isn't really into low carb diets. I think at one time there was a Dukan team. You might see your doctor first and get his okay - make sure you have no existing kidney problems as initially is is mostly protein. In my opinion there are much better low and lower carb diets such as Primal, Paleo, Atkins, South Beach. There is a lot more support for those diets.

At first glance the Dukan diet looks interesting. Another low carb diet of sorts, and I'm all for that. I myself started low carb three years ago to loose weight, and stayed on it not so much to loose weight but because my health is better eating this way.

I've managed my blood sugar this way for 3 years, with good blood tests and my doctor's approval. I might add that as a type-2 diabetic it was 12 years of pills before that, and my blood sugar is actually better, on average, than at any time during those 12 years.

So yes, ... for my health.

Hello everyone ... I've been a member of SparkPeople for several years. I was at a party yesterday and my sister-in-law went on the Dukan plan (due to health concerns) and has done GREAT with it. I'm actually looking around and looking for some information on this before I 'commit' to this lifestyle change . . . (you know, everything in moderation and all that) - but ... what a GREAT way to 'kick-start' a slump that I have been in for some time.

Oh ... about me - like I said, I have been on SP for quite a few years now. I'm a leader/member of the 5% Challenges that I do periodically ... but I always keep trying to learn/do new things and am very interested in meeting all of you and getting to know you and learning some tips/tricks from you! ~ Heidi
