We don't use the steam bags, either. I just can't see how cooking in plastic can be good for you. I've read that it's particularly bad to use plastic or saran wrap when heating foods that have fat/oil in them, as the chemicals from the plastic are more likely to "leach" into high-fat foods (like meats, cheese sauces, veggies with oil on them, etc.). I do sometimes steam veggies in glass bowls in the microwave if we're pressed for time. I try to do it on the stovetop b/c like kellkat said, the microwave is not a great option and will destroy many of the nutrients in your veggies.

Sorry I wasn't more clear...

By denature I meant that it kills the nutrients in your food. Remember how years and years ago rumor had it that the radiation from a microwave was dangerous to our bodies - like if we stood in front of it while it was running? Well, that probably isn't so true, but the radiation IS dangerous to the food that is inside the microwave being cooked by the rays. It kills your food! Does that make sense?

Denature? I'm sorry that's a new one for me. Please, elaborate. THanks! :)

DH and I just bought a water distiller and are bottling our own water now - only in glass. We used to go buy distilled water at a place downtown and had to use 5 gallon jugs for it. We thought the #7 jugs we had were the best but recent postings here on SP and other websites - and lately even on the news - showed us the light. I think the only safe containers are glass, ceramic or stainless steel.

BTW, those steamer bags are for use in the microwave, and microwaving your food denatures it, so they're a bad idea anyway.

Question: With all the hype about not eating any food cooked inside plastic or covered with plastic or frozen in plastic, are those Steam fresh packs so healthy??? Anybody know?

I wonder how we can find out. Is it only certain plastic?

I hear if you look on the bottom of plastic water bottles (probably any plastic container) #'s 1,3,6 & 7 are not healthy to drink from.

I wonder how we can find out?
