I have been on Sparkpeople for several years. I have weighed within 5 pounds of the same weight for about 30 years. I am now 51 years old and have so much more trouble even dropping a pound or two than I did when I was younger. A few months ago I was put on high blood pressure meds and gained 10 pounds in a month. I am off the meds and controlling it with diet, exercise and meditation...but I am still trying to drop the extra pounds. I am trying not to focus on the scale. I have weighed myself daily and taken my measurements once a week since I started gaining weight at 18. I am slightly OCD about it. When I stopped doing that in my former (unhappy) marriage, I went over 200 pounds, so it is still very important to me!

I have been trying to learn to love this body! I am good with most of if, but my stomach. I grew up on a ranch and I am very muscular....except for the tummy!

I live in Southern California and I have been happily married to an amazing man that doesn't care what my scale says for almost 15 years. I have two wonderful sons, one is 23 and in the USCG and the other is 12 and a sweet, incredibly brilliant boy. None of them have weight issues and I eat less than them. emoticon

I'm hoping this team can help me to focus of what is important!

Thank you so much!

Heidi

Not new to Sparkpeople - but new to the team. I'm Julie. At 48 I have decided that it's "About time..." to stop leaning on the excuses for gaining weight and make a concious decision to change my lifestyle for the better.

My husband and I are Salvation Army Officers currently appointed to Lake Havasu City AZ.

I have lost 20+ pounds since the first of the year BUT have gained and lost and gained again the same 1 or 2 pounds for the last 8 weeks. I HATE plateaus and that is why this team caught my eye.

Hello! I'm Nan and I just joined the team. The scale can lead me up and down like a kite on a windy day. When it's down, I'm up but when it's up, I'm down. It's really no friend of mine. I've joined the team in hopes of making friends and finding encouragement and a little of fun and humor too. I honestly feel I'm too old (less than a year to 60!) to worry about the number on the scale, but I am concerned about my health. I'd rather measure my weight loss by how my clothes fit, how I feel and my blood pressure staying down. Greetings to all and all for now!

Welcome Liz and Elizabeth and any recent newbies,
I help run this team but I admit I am a scales addict too, but have learnt its not all about numbers, I feel better , I actually enjoy exercising now and feeling clothes becoming looser nome. there is no magic wand to wave, there is no one way if eating to suit all. Personally I find saying I do healthy eating helps. I am not on a diet. That's my way you all may find another way, there are many who follow the sparks way if eating and tracking food helps them,
Do stay positive don't give up after a bad day. Believe me we all have those.
If we on the team can help at all do ask. Do
Keep chatting on here so we can cheer each other on and offer a shoulder to cry on too if needed, I am Ree from England emoticon

Hi! My name is liz and to tell the truth, I joined this team because my sister did. I want to be closer to her and stay connected since we live far away from each other. After reading some of the comments left, I must say I am intrigued, I am a slave to my scale, I weigh every morning (and sometimes at night). I know that this is crazy but habits are hard to break.

I just turned the big 5-0 and am tired of being overweight. I recently lost 28 pounds but they have begun to creep back and I want to stop them. I still need to lose about 20 more and hope that coming back to spark people will help me accomplish that. I have one son who is an incredible person and one husband (who is semi incredible- depends on the day). I am looking forward to being a member of this team!

Liz

Hi Michelle ~ Please let us know if there's any way we can help you, and feel free to vent your frustrations as they arise... unfortunately, that's inevitable. I know you're re-starting Spark, and that can be overwhelming! There are so many options, and so much information. My advice is take your time, and have fun exploring the Spark website.

I hope you'll find Spark to be as helpful as I do! To me, "Sparking" isn't a chore - it's where I find support, and learn every day; most important of all, it's where I have easy-to-use tools to keep myself accountable - to myself - toward my goals.

Let me clarify: our team philosophy ISN'T that we DON'T weigh in...
It's in how we USE what the scale shows us, and how it affects us.

It's important to understand how incredibly volatile our body weights are, and how easy it is for it to change; not just day to day, but hour to hour. To name just a few influences: the weather, your sleep schedule, if you have any inflammation or injuries; how much fiber and water, and when you ate them; your digestive process, your body's glucose reserves.

Depending on the circumstances, a person can weigh either up OR down from what would be considered their "real" weight. Fact is, that number on the scale is only true for that moment of time; that's why depending so much on what the scale says is so frustrating. I always weigh-in two or three days in a row, and average them to get my "official weight."

How often you weigh is up to you - whatever works for you, and that can change as your needs or wants change. Some people are more comfortable with getting on a scale once a month, but others weigh every day. I only weigh in at a specific time (for example, weekly) if I'm in a challenge that requires it. Otherwise, I put the scale away and don't worry about it.

Good luck! Elizabeth ~

Hello. My name is Michelle and I have been with Spark for a couple of years but I have not been consistent. I have trouble sticking with it when I do not see the scale move. I am praying that it is different this time and that this group can help me not be stuck on a number on the scale when it does not move. Looking forward to this new journey.

Hello! My name is Aubrey, and my mom is super active on Sparkpeople. She got me in a few years ago, but I was never really active on here. I'm hoping to keep up with it this time, and to lose a few pounds and get healthier.

I don't have the best body image, and I'm working on not looking at dress sizes or how much I weigh, but how I feel and how I look in my clothes.

emoticon Thought I'd better introduce myself, for those that don't know me.
I'm Vicki and I live in Florida.
I'm working towards making the healthiest choices I can when it comes to taking care of myself.
I want to make exercise a top priority as I have a couple of health issues that exercise would improve. Also it would definately give me more energy.
I am basically trying to keep all my nutritional numbers within a set goal I think will work for me. It's not strictly any one specific program. If I had to push it, I'd be more inclined to say it's a lower carb plan.
I'm working to lose about 100 lbs but have no set time to lose it in. I'd love to lose it over the next couple of years, but I tend to be a very slow loser. So I'll take it one pound at a time.

Hi there! I'm Bean. I'm rejoining....I haven't been on here since 2009. When my 6th child was born, she took priority over everything as all of my children have done. Now I am finding time for myself AGAIN!!! I am excited about getting in gear and taking off the "weight". So far in a week and a half I feel as I am kicking butt...my own! Exercising everyday and eating right! ANd the biggie...drinking 8 glasses of water a day! So anyway here I am emoticon

REJOINED/ Hi, I'm Vicki. I live in Titusville, Fl. I'm 55 years old and 70 lbs over weight. I've been trying for over a year to get my weight down and all I've done is yo-yo back and forth. I did lose 12.2 lbs in 2011. I've started a low carb plan like I did back in the 80's ( I lost 105 lbs in 13 months and kept it off for 18 years), and I'm hoping to get the weight back off over the course of the next 2 years. I'm not nearly as active as I used to be so I know the weight won't come off as fast as it did back then. Plus I've gone into full menopause so my body tends to have a mind of it's own. I lose motivation easily so I'm hoping the team will help keep me motivated to stay on track. Thanks for having me.

Hi Everyone!
My name is Catherine but some people know me as DJ HarleyQuinn in Second Life. Most people call me Cat, Catherine, Cait, or DJ. I'm 40 years old, married for ten years, no children yet.

I'm heading back to school to gain as many degrees as I can. I spent my life focused on making money when I should have spent my life helping people. I should have taken a cue long ago when I wanted to be a paramedic. So I plan on taking classes in Sports Psychology, Child Development, psychology, drug counseling, alcohol counseling, and languages.

I tossed out my scale this morning because really my goal is to feel better, look better, get of Diabetic medication, take less room in the dressing room, take less room on a train, bus...I think you can get the picture.

So Im really glad that I found this group and look forward to getting to know everyone!

Well, I am 25 years old, and my name is Julie. I've been married almost two years to my awesome, hilarious, supportive husband Ben. I come from Maine, in the USA, but am currently living in Western Australia and working full-time in the Marketing department at an art gallery. My husband is a civil engineer. I usually work normal hours, but events and exhibition openings sometimes means I work nights and/or weekends. I lost the first 40-50ish lbs by counting calories (although not all the time), becoming more active in general, doing DVDs at home (especially Jillian Michaels) and doing Les Mills classes at the gym (I love BodyStep, BodyPump, and BodyBalance). I am a dancer, but have yet to find a studio around here yet, which is very difficult for me because dance is a huge part of my life! I love the arts and learning about health and wellness, and herbal medicines.

Hi sparkies! I've been on SP for over a year and a half. At one point, I had lost almost 50 lbs, but I am back down to having lost just over 30 :( I went on a longggggg holiday, and had a hard time getting back into the spark. Recently, my husband and I have been feeling fat, frumpy, and lumpy, and found our sparks again! I wrote a blog recently describing new ways we were motivating with goals that AREN'T just scale related--they are everything from financial, to well-being, to nutrition, and fitness. Weight/measurement goals were just one of the many categories we had! So far, it seems to be working. I have always been scale obsessed, but I find that I become obsessed quite easily, which could be one reason I'm overweight. Hello, I love food. Happy to be a part of this group!

Hi everyone! I'm new to this team, but not to Spark. I was doing well for awhile last year until the winter came. All that cold weather and snow make me want to eat more and exercise less...the worst combination ever! Anyway, I'm finally back on track and I was looking for some new teams to join and found this one.

I weigh myself everyday, but I try not to think about the number too much except for on my official weigh-in day. This time around, I am really focusing on hitting all my targets for nutrition and exercise. As long as I hit those targets, the scale should cooperate and then we can be friends again. LOL!

Mine was all of a sudden. I had been tracking my calorie intake with spark for a couple of months, but I was still gaining weight! I had been getting closer and closer to my lower daily limit and weighing every day, on the idea that I had been set too high a limit. For several days each week I was well under my limits, and still nothing. It got to a point where I was afraid to eat, and I still wasn't loosing much weight. I was still half a stone over what I started at. It was taking over my life. The first fortnight on the Paul McKenna program was torture. I was convinced I would be putting weight on instantly. I was amazed when for the first time, after that fortnight I lost. But I went straight back to weighing myself daily! Which started The cycle again. That was when I ditched the scales. I was probably helped by the CD. It does motivate me marvellously.

Eve I do admire your stregth of character in dumping the scales. Did it happen all at once? I want to do that, but can I cope.?
How do others feel ?
Can you dump the scales yet?
I will start a new challenge. Plase do join in
First say how often you weigh in? Are you happy with that? Would you like to weigh in less often?

I wil start teh challenge by saying I weigh in every day!
So my first step in this challenge is I will use the scales every alternate day emoticon

Hi I'm eve from London England. I also have that obsessive personality. I found that all the time I weighed and tracked my calories, tracked my exercise points, and weighed myself daily, I lost no weight at all. It would throw me into a tail spin, trying to work out what I was doing wrong. It was only when I started the Paul McKenna thing, that stitchingnan knows about that I mostly learnt to let go, and the weight started to come off! Even then I couldn't stay off the scales, although it was against the rules! I finally had a really bad week and felt hopeless, all because of some stupid number! So I took the battery out of the scales and binned it! The scales sit in a corner of the bathroom, but they don't work. Occasionally I borrow a neighbours, but I have been unweighed now for several months. The world hasn't ended. I have lost another dress size. I'm content!

Hey everyone! I struggle with that number on the scale quite a bit. If it doesn't say what I want it effects my day in such a negative way! I have quite a hard time losing weight ( possibly due ot my diabetes-type 1 for 28years). As of recently I have been lsoing some inches, but even with that I get so negative cause the scale doesn't. I really am trying to let go of that scale. I only way once a week, but the few days following that weigh in are hard.! Time to put it away atleast for a few weeks at a time.

Age is only a number!

The best inspiration is to not outdo others, but to outdo yourself.

One day at a time!

In order to want it you have to be it!

Hello Brandi! Welcome! Usually the initial weight loss is always due to loss of water so its not an accurate measure of how much you've lost. If you've been eating healthy and staying within the calorie limit for weight loss, then you can probably attribute 1 or 2 pounds from that 5 pounds to actual loss of fat. I would suggest weighing yourself (if you must) every two weeks. Otherwise, stick to measuring tapes or how your clothes fit!

Hi...my name is Brandi and I need some encouragement NOW!!! I've been living this healthy lifestyle for less then two weeks. The first week I lost 5 pounds...this morning I hopped on the scale to see that I have gained two pounds. I'm an emotional eater, so of course I over ate today. Could it be muscle growth or am I really gaining weight?

Hello! My name is Krish. I have been struggling with weight issues and eating disorders for a long time, and its always because I obsess about the weight and not about the things that really matter like health and fitness. I'd like to change all that now, and hope to find support in this team! Thanks for starting this btw!

Hi - I am Lee - lost 25# with SP in 2009 and have maintained, but am not consistent in exercise or diet. I watch the scale most days, and unless I have gained a few pounds, I don't make any changes.

My goal is to get fit in 2011 - I decided to give up the scale in December and weigh in January 1. I plan to focus on walking, strength training and moderate eating. I have found that for me, there is no purpose in making stringent resolutions that cannot become part of my overall lifestyle.

Once I publicly committed to "No Weigh" on my blog, I searched for and found this team for support!

Looking forward to getting to know each of you. emoticon

Hi, Can an Oldie join in? I was looking at teams on SP and this one lept out at me. I am a scales addict and let it rule my life. I have lost about 30lbs but there it has stuck.Its stupid to blame the scales but I do. I hope to find out more of the aims on here and get to know you. I am Ree from England. emoticon

Hello All- Just joined the group. I haven't used my scale in almost 9 weeks... I was once obsessed with using it every week and based my success or failure on what the scale said... Atlhough I haven't used it I also am scared to death to check my measurements because of what I might NOT see.... I've been struggling with not losing any weight since I joined SP in March, however recently found that it might have something to do with medical stuff.... Frustrated? YES!!!! Hopeful? YOu betcha!!! Not gonna give up emoticon

hi there. part of the reason i let the scale rule my life, is i gotta keep mindful of my goals. the moment i quit weighing in, i lose sight and quit exercising. but the moment i quit logging into spark i quit paying attention to what i eat. so the two go hand in hand.

i am jessica. i am 31, a mother of 2, and married for 12 years. i work full time, volunteer when i can, shuffle kids between activities, mystery shop, and exercise as much as possible.

my last hurdle for the weight to come off... being mindful of my eating.

Hey Everyone! I see it's been a few months since someone last posted on this. My name is Kirsten and lately, I have been a scale addict. I really don't know why I keep getting on that to see how my weight has changed. My goals are mostly performance oriented goals, but I got hooked on checking the scale all the time. Anyway, very happy to find this team to help keep me accountable :)

Keep on Keepin' on!

Hi, I just stumbled across this team and I was happy to find a group of people who are trying not to focus on the scale so much!
I sometimes weigh myself two or three times a day and then get frustrated when I don't see my weight going down. I know it's silly, but I just can't help myself!
I have joined the Spark Your Body Bootcamp and I'm finally seeing some results that have nothing to do with the scale, and I'd like to continue to focus on health rather than just weight.

HI all!!
My name is Tara and I live in New Mexico.

I joined this team because I am tired tired TIRED of trying my arse off and feeling like I'm not making progress just because of what the scale says.

I am SOOOOOO ready to try something new, and to actually focus on all the good things I'm doing and not just on one number.

Lets DO THIS without dissapointment emoticon

Hello, My name is Jessica and I am a recovering scale-o-holic.

emoticon

Not to make light of twelve-step programs, that's truly my child-of-an-alcoholic sense of humor showing.

emoticon

So anyway, I just wanted to say I'm now able to be active in the team and wanted to introduce myself, mention my goals, yada yada.

I'm becoming more ready, slowly but surely, to accept the fact that I'm having a hard time holding myself accountable to ME(because who else could I do this for, really?).... and that going it alone(for the most part, no "heavy" support) hasn't been working for me either.

For me there's a contradiction to my aiming for health and still measuring it with a scale, but it's such a ritualistic, societal thing that it's hard to walk away from. It became habit at some point to measure my self-worth by the numbers on my scale or clothing tags. I will still buy clothes more often(though I buy thrift, but that's another story) if they are listed as a "medium" or "large" rather than an XL if they run kind of big, even if it doesn't fit as well as the larger size would have. It shouldn't bother me so much, I'm 6 feet tall! Of course I might have to wear XL in some things, I am an extra tall woman(and a little overweight.) But man can that be hard to remember, eh? I did USED to be a "medium" at my thinnest, or rather still a little large on bottom(I got some junk in my trunk, what can I say? :)

It has seemed in the past that I will end up feeling overwhelmed because of my busy life, or just lackluster because of back & knee pain. These things I have used as excuses/reasons, and I have not kept myself, and my health, at the top of my priority list. Mostly because these thoughts and emotions have been unaddressed for some time now, or at least mostly ignored.

Today is going to be a unique day, in particular, for me.
It's the first day of the rest of my life, and my journey to good health.

Hi.I'm Gloria and I'm dreading my next weigh in already. Even though I've been working hard at eating healthier. Last night I made a recipe of Spicv Peanut noodles that I got from the site. I'm worried because of the carbs. So ridiculous...

I weigh myself several times a day and have decided that enough is enough.

If I weigh myself and weigh less than expected, I think I deserve a treat, usually something with empty calories.

If I weigh myself and weigh more than expected, I get frustrated and start to binge.

I am not sure how often I am going to weigh from now on, but it will not be daily, or even weekly.

Hi, my name is Jen, and I'm a 28 year old mom to 3 great kids! Since being here on Spark, I've lost some weight and have also gained some too! I'm ready to get back into it hardcore and get the rest of the weight off. I always weighed myself everyday, until one day I didn't like the results so I decided to forget about the scale! I waited about a month to step back on, only to find I'd lost 11 pounds! emoticon I'm really looking forward to being a part of this team and getting to know everyone! Have a emoticon week everyone! emoticon emoticon

Hi Everyone

My name is Deby... I am 51 years old... I am on Top
of the Hill... Taking this time to look back over my life... and able to see clearly the direction I would like to take now...

Last Aug. 2008 I weighed in at 215 lbs. and said no more.......
I started Spark People Feb. 5 2009 weighing in at 192 pounds....

I would love to see the 140's or even the 130's again and also to fit into
sizes 5/6 its been over 20 years ....

I Have never Exercised like I have now... so I am not sure of what number will
suit me on the Scale.... so when I hit the 150's I will re-Evaluate where I am...

I was weighing daily then changed to weekly now I have made the dicision to weigh in only on the first and fifteenth of each month... since I am making this a life style change not a diet...

I make sure I do my daily jog/walking, of 60 - 120 min. daily ... in the beginning was mostly walking now able to mostly jog... I wear my pedometer and do at least 10,000 steps per day... (in beginning could barely make 5,000)

I have a ONEderful Hubby and 3 grown sons.
My middle son has blessed me with grandkids.
~~~I LOVE MY FAMILY~~~
BLESSings ALLways
Deby
Hello
My name is Llyvonne, from Ashhurst New Zealand.
I don't actually own a scale so it is quite difficult for me to track things, I usually only get weighed when I go into the doctor.
I joined spark people at the beginning of the year but am trying to get back into the swing of things. I struggle with strength training.
Look forward to getting to know you.
Llyvonne
Hi! I'm Chris and just joined this team yesterday. Yes, I guess the scale IS deceiving. And I DO get frustrated every time I weigh myself, it changes from day to day. So, instead, I am gonna measure myself.
A big emoticon to you both. It's greate to have you join us.
Scales are deceiving. SP tells us that the scale can show up to a 8 - 12 pound difference in a day. Many reasons for it, water, meals, meds, health issues, TOM, etc. so don't rely on it. Pick a day you want to weigh in and then do it then.
That way your nerves don't get shot. Too, take your measurements and enter them in on teh section for it on your Start page. Use your Spark Points page as your daily map to the site and for the links to do everything.
Water is very important for us. We may, and I do, require more than the 8 glasses a day. The link goes to a water calculator I use to see what I need for my current weight. Mt requirement has dropped 9 ounces due to weight loss. Yipee!
Hi Everyone,
I am new to this team and I am so glad I found it. Since I have decided to change my lifestyle, I refused to stand on a scale because of the emotional ride I experienced in the past from its fluctuations.
Just today I have decided to weigh in once a month...compared to once every three months.
I was wondering If anyone else here weighs in once a month. And is it realistic to think that a person could lose 10lbs a month. All thoughts are welcomed. Thanks a bunch team, and I look forward to meeting everyone.
Hello! I wanted to join this team since I am addicted to the scale. I jump on the scale 1,2,3x a day and it frustrates me when the scale doesnt go down. I know its not all about the numbers but I feel like I am not making progress when the scale doesnt go down. I hope to get support from this team!
Thanks Crotty. It is good to be back. Now I have just five Spark Teams and if I add one it will be for a good reason. I am better at small anyways. Small is more my style. The bigger things get, the more out of control they are. I like to get to know people and it is hard to do that with twelve teams. Next to near impossible to get anything out of it. For now the search is over. Unless I get a personal invite.
LOL.
I left this team a few days ago without saying anything. I have been really mixed up lately. I tried out a bunch of Spark Teams. Right now I am sticking with the ones that work. This team has helped me a lot. And helped me get to know what teamwork is about. Sometimes I get overwhelmed easily by things in my life. I guess that is why I let the scale bother me. I am giving mine away this morning. Because I know when I have really messed up badly or when I am really doing very good. There are indications either way without the scale. And I have an eating disorder counselor who can tell me what my lean mass, fat content, and water weight and pounds are once a month. I really don't ****NEED**** to know anymore than that. I need to get back into the swing of things. Like recommitting to some basics after talking to my eating disorder counselor this morning. But, I want to try to fitness everyday at least a little and stop binging. The last few days I have been binging. My emotions have been out of whack and I have been upset. I am sorry I left and I hope to make better use of the team now that I am back. I will try not to add a lot of new teams and utilize the teams that I have and make the most of what I have got. And try not to get too overwhelmed. Thanks for all the support in the past. It is good to be back.
Sounds like a plan. Mine is on a week's vacation, full board included. Sounds like a good deal to me.
Hugs Wispy.
