Thanks so much, I'll give it a try.

Ive heard that you can become immune to the medication for GERD after awhile so this would be a good thing then.

Off for my walk. I am finally well enough to go for a little walk a day and it feels great.

You have been very helpful to me and I really appreciate it.

Hi,

No,I didn't get it, unless I didn't recognize it. I'll go and make sure I haven't deleted it. I get so many emails from sparkpeople that sometimes I delete them but never a private message. I could have done it by mistake.

Hi. Just checking to see if you got my private note I sent a few days ago? I hadn't heard back from you so didn't know if you got the messages or not.

I guess socialized medicine is good in some ways because rich and poor can afford medical care. It's just the quality of the care, because Canada does not pay there doctors very well so most the good ones go to the U.S. We have a real shortage and this also applies to nurses.

What other site are you referring to regarding the organic vinegar?

So glad you are doing better! I guess I'm lucky I just get a stomach ache mostly.
I've had several times it was burning my esaphagus. That was awful!
I think that's what some want for us here in U.S. is socialized medicine.
Did you read the other site about the organic vinegar?
That seems to help some people.
Have a good evening.

It all started one morning when I woke up with a horrible taste in my mouth. It took me all this time to get diagnosed. The medical system in Canada is very poor. It may be free but I wish I could pay so I could get better care.

Actually, I am feeling a bit better than I did. At one time I could barely get out of bed.

Thank you for your blessing.

Well, I don't have trouble with most things just acidy foods and too much food too near bedtime.
Wow, it sounds like you have it bad! How long has this been going on? Since June?
Bless your heart.
I wouldn't want to lose weight like that either!
I think I'd be worrying too if I was going through that.

I thought GERD and Hiatus hernia sufferers weren't supposed to eat seeds. Or is that just for ulcers. I'm so confused.

I'll check out Hungry Girl. At this time I can hardly eat enough to stop from losing weight. I've lost 35 pounds since June just from my stomach problems. After struggling with my weight for years, I have to say that this is not the way to do it. I still have some to lose and I am struggling one day to eat enough, and the next day not to eat too much.

Life is an adventure and I'm just glad I'm still here to enjoy the ride. After being sick for long I was worried that I wouldn't be on that ride much longer. I'm such a big worrier I drie myself nuts.

Yes, it can happen. We all get regimented at times in our lives.
If you leave the skins on those spuds it's added fiber too.
I like lots of goodies in my bread. Seeds, flax, etc. 7 grains. One of the hardest things for me to give up was butter! I use the spray now...not nearly as good but better than nothing!
Have you checked out Hungry Girl? I get that daily online and love it. Lots of good tips about where the danger is in eating out and ways to cut the fat & calories in about any of those restaurant faves that we try to avoid now.
Life is such an adventure isn't it?

Hmmmmm - actually that is a good idea. I'll have to try frying them in Pam or maybe olive oil. I guess my doctor was so adamant that I stay away from greasy foods that I am getting carried away.

Tried glucose-free bread today. Yuch!

Why? I use pam spray to fry them. But, I don't really fix myself fried potatoes as I might want to eat too much! That will have to be a once in a while treat!
Something almost as good but one can have 2nds is fried cabbage & onions. Hmmm...I'll have to pick up some cabbage next trip down the hill!

When my stomach gets really bad I microwave a potato and eat it with just salt or maybe a little Olivio. I may eat some steamed spinach with it. Spinach is a very alkaline food and seems to neutralize the acid.

Oh, I'm Nancy BTW, and I just joined this team.

Hey. I survived! The past 2 days I haven't had the sore tummy! I eat a lot earlier now and stop when I'm full! No citrus yet though and just started having 1 cup of coffee a couple mornings ago.
I never want to go through that again!

Hi. I'm new here. I have acid reflux occasionally..last night it woke me up. My upper stomach hurt terribly. I got up and walked outside thinking that would help....didn't! It got worse..so bad that I was doubling up from pain. My stomach felt tight & bloated..like I was going to explode and the pain was everywhere even my back.
I took some Pepto Bismo & finally vomited. My other half was searching online to find help for me. He searched our car until he found some old tums. I threw those up too. Finally drank a tsp of baking soda in water and it started easing up!
Sorry I'm so graphic so early in the morning but that was the worst case I can remember having! Horrible pain! I've learned my lesson about eating late! I like to wait for my other half to get home from work and eat with him but no more of that!
My stomach is so sore from the acid this morning that it hurts to drink tea! Not even going to attemp coffee for a few days! Does anyone have any tips for diet for next few days? Right now I'm afraid to put anything in my stomach! I get it about leaving spicey food alone & acidic. I will drink water & tea today. Thanks, R

I'm glad you brought the point up about the water. I had forgotten to list that. My doctor and dietician both told me to only take tiny sips of water with the food because it stirs up the food. Wait for awhile after your food has settled to enjoy the liquids.

Welcome to the team!

One thing my doctor told me about water, or any beverage, is that if you have GERD, it's better to drink your fluids after a meal instead of with the meal, that way the food isn't floating around in your stomach. I always wait til I'm finished with my meal to drink my glass of water; and if I do get a little thirsty before my meal is done, I just take little sips.

You're on the right track. Good for you. I've talked to my family doctor, my new family doctor and my gastroenterologist and they all warned me about the chocolate and peppermint.

I know how frustrating this is. Been there, done that! I hope your naturepathic doctor can give you some new insight.

Bonnie, thanks for your reply. I do have my bed elevated, and try to stay away from fried food and spicy, as well as soda. I didn't know chocolate and peppermint are culprits.

I try to eat smaller amounts of food.

However, about the water. I do know that we need lots of water to help digest our food better, so it makes sense. I am not pleased with myself for ignoring this, when I am intelligent enough to know that I should drink more.

I do not like to take drugs. I do, however, occasionally take a Pepcid. I prefer not to though. I am going to ask my naturepathic doctor what she recommends for an herbal supplement.

Thank you for your advice. I appreciate it, and good luck with your endoscopy.

Be kind to yourself! I've never heard that not drinking enough water adds to the difficulties of GERD.

In my case it has everything to do with wrong food choices, too much food at one time, going to bed on a full stomach, not avoiding chocolate, carbonated drinks, peppermint, spicy or greasy food, etc.

Also it's so important to sleep with your bed elevated or, if you're having a really bad episode, sleep in a recliner.

I'm so sorry you're suffering so. My doctor gave me Protonix to take 2x each day to neutralize the acid in my stomach. It's working very well. I am having an endoscopy done this Friday though to make sure there's nothing else going on.

Best to you on your journey,
Bonnie

I joined the drink 8 glasses of water a day team. I do not drink enough water at all. Could this be one of my problems with the GERD? I did think this was a problem, but I never made the effort to try to drink more water. I am such a jerk.

Life is a journey. Enjoy the trip.
