I didn't know that illegal drugs was a subject allowed on here, along with the usual other subjects not suitable for "family viewing" ... if I weren't desperate for knowledge I wouldn't have brought it up ...

how lucky to have good bones! Interesting comments.

Thanks VISION_Quest2 for the link to the article, it has been all over Yahoo since yesterday. If you have access the original article published in The American Journal of Medicine: The Impact of Marijuana Use on Glucose, Insulin and Insulin Resistance among US Adults is quite interesting: the conclusions were marijuana use was associated with lower levels of fasting insulin and the the users have smaller waist circumference....

Yup, I'm a female -- although I have been accused of "thinking more like a male" -- at least by people of my generation -- probably because I'm something of a numbers/computer geek.

DUH! A lesson in proof-reading. I didn't quite understand what was so impressive about my time in headstand and why someone was concerned about the effect on my bones until I re-read my message -- make that FIVE minutes in a headstand, not 15 -- apparently my fantasy took over my fingers there.

And, by the way, if I was out of line here talking about the boss ... let me add that he just hadn't been any more relaxed or slipshod despite most likely smelling from it, having had the toke at lunchtime ... he really was just acting his usual self ... he was very close to the chest and never let loose one bit, so it's not like we were publishing High Times - but this is not to say the the envelope edge was not pushed creatively ... with or without the stuff ...

I don't know if Spark finds posts like this offensive. I'm going to cut it out!

Here is the story, from a pretty reliable publication:

healthland.time.com/2013/05/21/marij
ua
na-the-next-diabetes-drug/

They admit that it wasn't a controlled study ...
they claim that over time, the current users fight off the munchies ...

I think - as illegal as the drug is, it is thus expensive - you have more affluent people indulging in it regularly.

I also think these people tend to be more social; and in their own countercultural way, definitely more fashionable, guaranteed--which goes a long way to explain how pot "controls" weight ... not religiosity, and not avoiding booze either ... I think they don't want to talk about the elephant in the room here ...:

There was a sort of working class back in the 80s that was the real thing - no family money to fall back on (how I was living); and the more activist, avant-garde "temporary" kind (at least where I'd been living at the time) ...

Many thanks for the reply and information. I will definitely join in the monthly challenge. I used to practice Asthanga, mainly the primary series, but with the onset of my autoimmune problems I changed to Hatha as my joints can no longer move fast enough for Asthanga or Vinyasa. I do an occasional Yin class at my gym but my daily practice is Hatha, strongly influenced by the Iyengar school. I generally do a few weekend workshops a year with an Iyengar teacher. I'm a long-time subscriber to the Yoga Journal but have not been on their website much. I'll have to look for the challenges.

Hi,
Hm, about weed -- first thing you have to know is that it is a VERY successful example of selective breeding. Marijuana today contains about 10 times higher concentration of THC (the psychoactive ingredient) as when I was using it in the 60s and 70s. Despite having lived in Canada for about 20 years (where it's use has never been as serious an offense as in the States) I have only had the very occasional hit in the last 30 years are so. And during that time I have learned so much about the effect of all drugs --including alcohol -- on the neurotransmitters in the brain that I would now be very reluctant to use anything regularly. Also, as it happens I now teach peer health educators at a university about the effects of many drugs, including marijuana. On the one hand, it certainly should not be a Class 1 drug, which is reserved for highly addictive, no medical benefit drugs, but the medical benefits are not yet well established -- because so little research has been done. Don't know where you heard that stuff about marijuana use related to type 2 diabetes, but I monitor the medical literature on drug use very carefully (because it's part of my job) and have never seen anything like that.

I have exceptionally strong bones (nice to have something in my body that works well since my joints don't) as does my 89 year old mother -- after her last bone scan, her doctor told her that her bones look better than most 60 year olds. I actually find that I have to be more careful in shoulder stands than headstands -- in headstands I keep a lot of the weight on my forearms.

Hippie, huh? Could you also tell me anything about weed?

I only tried it a few times ... about 4 decades ago.

But now I hear that frequent CURRENT use (it is legalized in a few states, some even from recreational use, you know?) can prevent diabetes mellitus type 2; and that EVER having tried it - even one time (and unlike Clinton, inhaling) makes you more susceptible to diabetes, which I now have.

My lifestyle and brief marriage had never brought me in contact with anyone who approved my use of this drug; continuing to this day; but I once thought I smelled in on my boss' breath ... (was tangentially in publishing industry then ... certain fields, welllll ...)

Nix on that headstand for me. From the beginning. it always hurt my neck, and now I am too weak/sick, etc. to have it. I suggest - if you are a female, particularly, frequent bone scans at your age, doing it for that duration. There are plenty of links on the web about preventing yoga injury.

emoticon impressive time in a pose. So do you practice Vinyasa, Hatha or Yin Yoga?
We are many in your age range, I'm 62 going to 63 at the end of this month, feeling great thanks to the Yoga practice and Meditation.

We are just finishing the Mantra Meditation, maybe you would like to check the last mantras. (see the post and go to the link).

We usually try free 21-day challenges from Yoga Journal (Yoga)and the Chopra Center(Meditation). Join us in the monthly challenge too. Inspire and be inspired.

Namaste.

I'm 65; an old hippie who has been practicing yoga -- with varying seriousness -- since my mid-20s. About 6 years ago, I was diagnosed with a systemic autoimmune disorder, probably lupus. Since then I have been paying close attention to the quality of the food I eat and I have become very serious about my daily yoga practice. I love SparkPeople but only just learned that there is a Yoga Lovers team. Definitely a team for me. Yoga has mainly meant asana practice for me but I am slowly paying more attention to the other 7 limbs. Meditation remains a challenge for me -- often the more I try to slow my mind down, the more it resists. Last year my asana goal was a solid 15 minute headstand -- which I have achieved and thereby greatly impressed my grandchildren. My goal this year is handstand -- long way to go to get there. Namaste
