What I love about a guided self practice is that my very experienced teacher can spend time helping me make small adjustments that make big differences.

" And of course not everyone ends up in pain."

The "full expression" of the pain of my decades-long injured "bad" knee, resulting in torn meniscus, did not come from bad yoga practice ... it came from yoga practice plus teaching myself Bollywood dance off a video ...

The minor pains along the way came and went ...

VisionQuest - you are wise to include the 'don't likes' in your practice - that will certainly help. And of course not everyone ends up in pain. But I've seen a lot of long-time yogis (including me) whose practice - even though balanced in terms of types of poses - exacerbated imbalances in the body: old foot injuries that cause weight to shift to one leg or the other, or onto the inside/outside of the foot; hypermobility in elbows/spine/knees that create imbalance... Not every teacher has the eye to spot these issues, but feedback from someone who understands the difference between large-muscle strength and deep joint stability, and between adjusting posture by movement of head, arms, chest, knees and adjusting from the way weight is balanced on the foot, can be a treasure beyond price for many who develop chronic pain issues. It made a huge difference for me!

" Our bodies tend to work to use our strengths to protect our weaknesses, which makes our strengths stronger and weaknesses weaker until we end up in some sort of pain."

Not necessarily me. I always do the stuff I hate. Dates back from when I was second-guessing the studio that didn't like me but liked my money ...

If I did only the stuff I Liked, it would be three dozen chaturanga vinyasas ... windmills (from aerobic dance) and rapid-fire (Kundalini-esque?) twisting boats (about 25) ... in between bouts of sun salutes A ....

To some point we are all beginnners and we're always learning. that's what makes practicing yoga so dynamic.I liked the suggestion of an occasional workshop with small groups hopefully - so you can get some individual feedback.

Wow - good for you doing this with a baby. I wish I had started earlier but wasn't able to "fit it in" until my nest was nearly empty.

Enjoy!

Kudos to you Rach!

You might run into folks who have 'rules' about when & how to practice -- but you have found a way to make it part of your life - that is great, especially with a baby. You rock!

I agree with the comment about a private lesson once in a while, or if you can find a babysitter, a Saturday workshop -- some situation where you can get feedback. Practicing alone, it's very easy to slip into bad habits - Our bodies tend to work to use our strengths to protect our weaknesses, which makes our strengths stronger and weaknesses weaker until we end up in some sort of pain. Much easier for someone outside to see than to perceive this through our own proprioceptive sense.

Best wishes to you, New Mom!

Welcome Rach!

I like to think that we are all "beginners" :-) It is an ongoing learning process for everyone. I'm impressed with everyone who can have a home yoga practice. I simply do not have the motivation.... so my hat is off to you!

Nice to have you here!

I am glad you are back to yoga... I know how it enhances my life. I suggest if you can to find a RYT - registered yoga teacher in your area who would work with you for a couple private lesson. She/he could help you develop a personal practice that you could practice without needing the DVD's. Also check out the great videos on yogajournal.com.

Hi. I just joined this group today. I've done yoga on and off for about 5 years, but still consider myself a beginner due to the off times. I started with Hatha yoga mainly for stress management and flexibility after starting my first post college real job. Now after off time due to grad school and a baby, I'm finding time to work it back into my schedule. I am really enjoying vinyasa flow yoga right now and all off my practice is with dvds. Not a single gym or studio offers classes at 9:30pm and my schedule doesn't permit it earlier in the day.
