Hi,
I moved to AZ from WA. And of course gained some weight during the move.

This team is quiet, I am hoping with the new year coming up that people will be more active and we can get more discussion going on to support each other.

I do kettlebells for my workouts as it is very effective (I want that) and efficient (I need that as life is always full). I love doing it, even when I hate it as the workout is hard. But I love the results most of all. I found a trainer locally I will start with mid January and going to start up again on my own until them.
If you want to know more about kettlebells, check out my blog (I just started on my kettlebell experiences) or one of the kettlebell sparkteams (I like the kettlebell challenge).

If you are interested in checking out kettlebells send me a sparkmail. I would love a workout partner, but I want someone who is serious about doing good workouts - e.g. wants the results and will work to get them.

Jane

Doing traditional kettlebell exercises, RKC style. Check out The Kettlebell Challenge sparkteam for more info - it welcomes everyone, from beginner to KB certified.

KETTLEBELLS PREPARE YOU FOR A HOST OF THINGS, BUT NOTHING PREPARES YOU FOR KETTLEBELLS.

Welcome aboard. I'm more active at my work spark than here. But do find time to stop by now and then.
Soon it will be the hot time of year for most of us around here and things will slow down. But this is the time I like to take hikes at night in the heat without the broil factor from that big yellow orb in the sky. I spend a lot of time in San Tan Regional Park and can usually be found on one of the trails, usually not close to the trail head.

Hello! I decided to join this group in hopes it is more active than my other one. I am a SAHM of three little ones, need some locals to talk to in hopes to help each other stay motivated, I had a drastic weight gain in 2004 and now I am starting to rise slowly again, need to stop it now. Hope to be part of an active message board. Have a wonderful Day! emoticon

Hello everyone :) I am currently part of the mesa team, as well as some others, I just saw this east valley deal in the weekly digest thing.. so here i am! I work out 5 days a week, I use the facility at my work as well as Ballys and I love it, I discovered a new machine yesterday and I am eager to see the results it promises. Happy Sunday!

Hi!
I am in east Mesa in the broadway/ellsworth area and I go to the red mountain center 5 days a week.
As someone posted below it is $4 a visit but if you get 3 months at a time it is only $24 a month, which is as much as most gyms but you aren't obligated month to month or stuck in a contract, so if you are sometimes short on money like I am its perfect!

Hi Everyone,

Dee here - been getting healthy since 2005 but had some 'challenges' the past two years. I'm in the east valley and love how the weather lets us get out and be active most of the year.

Hoping to meet some new friends and be supportive of your endeavors. Looking forward to getting to know all of you - have a great weekend emoticon

Welcome Al!

I have heard about the Red Mtn Center. I actually prefer walking out in the open air, and luckily my hubby is willing to go in the evenings with me so it's cooler (though still really hot some days). I'm open to meeting once in a while - a little extra time in doesn't hurt!

I am willing to go anywhere! I just thought that getting together like once a week would be some motivation (like going to meetings). I will see what classes they are offering this month. I think I might pick a time to go and anyone interested can come to the community center...then when it gets cooler maybe a park (maybe change it weekly so it can be convient for everyone). Just some ideas I have been kicking around. I started graduate school this week and need to get settled in so I will probably check on the classes next week. I'm so glad I found this forum

Hi Al! emoticon to the East Valley team! We look forward to getting to know you a bit better.

That sounds like a great deal at the Red Mountain center. I should see what classes they have to offer sometime. We are closer to the Freestone Ctr in Gilbert but have a Mesa address so they charge more.

I've managed to keep walking through the summer myself but am so-o looking forward to cooler weather when I can walk anytime of the day.

Hi, I am Al. I live in Mesa near Power road. I am a wife, a mom, I work, I am in graduate school, and I desperatly need to lose weight. Is anyone here interested in meeting once or twice a week to walk? While it is hot I prefer to exercise at the Red Mountain multigenerational center. It costs $4 per visit (unless you have a membership) but they have a gym and an indoor track and classes etc. When it cools down I don't mind walking at the park. For right now I am not doing anything crazy until I receive clearance from my doctor but I do have a lot of weight to lose so if anyone is interested in walking email me. Thanks emoticon

This morning's clouds made it easier to take a long walk, still hot but at least the sun was not beating down on me. I'm doing pretty good with 3 mile walks but would like to bump it up to 4, that means getting up earlier which means going to bed at a decent hour. I need to work on my habits.

Yeah it's easing up. I'm still not up to a long walk, but I'm getting there.

Yeah the tubing was local. It's on the Salt River. If you go north on Power Road 15 miles from the 60 freeway you can't miss it... It was a blast, but I'll have to be a lot more careful about the sunscreen (and I did have 3 applications). I'm very fair skinned. If my husband had put some on sooner, he wouldn't have burned - he has Mediterranean skin tones..

We wouldn't do nearly as long a walk if we weren't together. I wouldn't feel safe doing our normal route without him with me.

The sunburn sounds severe, hope it's easing up by now. You must've had a good time tubing. Was that local?

That's a nice long walk you all are doing, I don't usually get over 3, the heat makes it hard. And at night when the sun is down, I usually just take 1 mile walks unless one of my daughters is with me.

We've only just started walking in the last month or so. Our doctor wasn't happy that I gained all the weight that I lost last year back when I was in to see him last month and when hubby went the doc was equally unhappy with him over some issues... We'd been talking about walking for months (hubby was working 70 hour weeks for most of that time so walking wasn't really an option), and decided it was time to just get up and do it.

We have a 3.5-4 mile route we usually do around our neighborhood in the evenings 3 nights a week. We've not yet started with hikes, and when we do it'll be combined with our camping trips more often than not. We'll be going for 10 days to the rim at the end of August, and will be fishing and hiking up there.

Consistency is going to be an issue this week. We went tubing over the weekend and both came back so burned we could barely walk Sunday, and yesterday could walk enough to do the mandatory things (go to work, do some grocery shopping). Today is better yet, but I'm not sure I'll be up for making up yesterday's missed walk... We've given ourselves permission to not walk until we're healed (no longer than until sunburns start to fade). I also can't see my results - I'm retaining water because of the sunburn and so when I stepped on the scale for my weigh in yesterday I was quite a bit heavier than I was last week. It's too painful to use the tape measure as well...

emoticon CLYNN! I agree, spending time on the site (with the tracking tools and mutual support) really helps to keep me focused.

What a great thing to have your husband exercising with you! It can really make a difference to have someone so close helping you to stay accountable. Do you all ever take any hikes in the Superstition Mtns or even Silly Mtn? I hope to do this more when the weather cools back down.

Wishing you much success with consistency this week, and I will be working on the same, especially with regards to exercise.

I've been sparking for a little while, but just got down to looking through the message boards and found the message about this team. I had gotten off track for a while, and have started spending more time here to help get and keep me more focused on my goals. I live in East Mesa.

Ultimately I want to lose about 60 lbs. My husband and I started walking in the evenings 3 times per week in June and I monitor what I eat pretty carefully. I'm working on adding things in slowly and being consistent in doing the things I've already committed to so that I can continue to build and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Sorry it has been so quiet around here. Some of our team members are no longer on Sparks, and I recently returned from a trip. After today, I will have a little time off from work. Anyway, if you have any questions at all or ideas for the team, please share them. I would love to see our team really take off so we can support each other while we work towards our goals.

I will let my physical therapists dictate what I can and cannot do till I'm all healed, but I did express the desire to go forward to more challenging exercises. Today I began to do more aerobic activity i.e. stationary bike, resistance bands. I feel invigorated already! I'm looking forward to being able to walk in the mornings again, especially since the weather here in AZ is starting to cool down. I used to walk a mile and a half every morning......and I will again!

hisgrace, they measured my progress in physical therapy yesterday and that gave me a boost....I have doubled and tripled my range of motion (depending which action they were measuring). So I'm out of my funk now :)

Welcome, SASGAL, and thanks, HISGRACE

I had surgery on my cervical spine (neck) in July and am so frustrated because my "spirit is willing but the flesh is weak". It helps to be able to talk it out, and to just keep in touch with others who are working on their weight. Thanks for being there!

emoticon Welcome Vintagewillow!

emoticon Welcome Sasgal!

It's great to have you two join the team! My hope is that we will indeed 'spark' each other on...perhaps some challenges to kick it in gear. I was doing really good when I was regular with logging on each day and keeping track of my exercise and food here on the site. It really is a great tool but sometimes I get lazy.

I hit my high weight of 178 three years ago just a few months after moving here. I have lost about half my goal weight and now have been stuck at the same weight for about 5 months.

Anyway, I'd better run, must work today but am off the next few days. Looking forward to us getting to one another!

Hi! I just joined your Team. I'm from Queen Creek (Power and Ocotillo so right on the edge of Gilbert). I joined sparkpeople about a year ago, but didn't really do much with it. I just joined again a few weeks ago and hope to do better this time!

Looking forward to getting to know you all (or both at this point)!

hello, hisgrace

I've just joined your group. I joined SparkPeople before I had to have emergency major surgery. I'm continuing to recover at home, but I am feeling the need to be in contact with other 'Sparkers' to get and stay motivated, especially since I don't get out into society as much at the moment. A girl's still gotta eat! And that's where I need the help. It's so easy to fall back into bad eating when one is not feeling up to par and is forced into social isolation. I thank God that most people do not have to go through this! Anyway, it's nice to meet you and I welcome any new 'Sparkers of the East Valley' who might join!
