hi my name is marlene & i have just recently joined the sparkpeople forum. i have lived in ste. genevieve, mo all of my life. i am a nurse who currently works on a geriatric psych unit at a local hospital. i have been a nurse for over 20 yrs. while i know what i need to do to stay healthy i rarely do what i need to do. recently stopped smoking & now need to loose 30#. i have already lost 6# but need to stay motivated. i hope this forum keeps me accountable for what i put in my body & also that i exercise more;which i have a hard time doing. i live a very sedintary life except for work. i also have many medical problems which i hope by changing my lifestyle will improve. have had arthritis since i was 20. have had cancer 2 yrs ago. have chronic pancreatits r/t small duct disease & hyperparathyroidism & i also suffer from bipolar 2 disorder. hope you all can help me stay on track. oh by the way i will soon be turning 51. a message to Pat. i have found that if i consume 1 tsp of organic sulfar crystals twice a day in a warm beverage that it really helps my arthritis. pain free no but much better pain control. usually do not need to take any OTC medicines or prescribed pain pills. dr's wanted me to start taking methotrexate but did not like all the side effect associated w/ the drug. organic sulfar crystals as far as i know does not have any side effects & is not toxic to the body as it is excreted by the kidneys & does not build up in your system. let me know if you need more information.

Hi everyone! My name is Pat and I have been on Spark People for a little over a week. The first team I joined was "Challenged by Arthritis" and now "Missourians". I'm going to try to help this team get to the #1 spot.

I am in my early 60s and live with my husband, a cancer survivor with short term memory loss as a result of his biopsy, my daughter, her daughter, two Miniature Pinschers and a cat. I foster Min Pins at times and transport any dog along with a friend or two from one city to another so they can be safe at a no kill rescue or in a foster/adoptive home.

My decision to get healthy was made after I was diagnosed with arthritis in my lumbar spine. I had been working around the arthritis in my knees, although it slowed me down a lot. But the pain in my spine was excruciating and I became a couch potato. I am retired and this year my Medicare Plus insurance choice offered Silver Sneakers. Within a week of receiving my membership card I was signed on at the YMCA as a member and have been doing water aerobics and strength exercises 4 to 5 days of the week. It has been helping and I can now walk the dogs 1/3 of a mile without pain although longer walks require resting places mapped out before I can continue.

It is my goal to lose 90 pounds, be able to walk the dogs 2 or 3 miles at one time and start feeling better about how I look without carrying almost two of me in one body.

Had anyone tried the Spark Tracker and how did you like it? Is anything else better, more reliable or sturdy?

It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you don't stop. - Confusious

I'm Toni, I live in a fly spec on the map called Drexel. We sit right on the ks border.
I have been a member of sp for some thing like 5 years. I will do great for a while and then life gets in the way.
Well life has taken another road then what i was planing on so now i need to adjust. I have became a care taker to my better half emoticon . I need to find the strength and energy to get what needs to be done done. So im starting with getting me in shape.
I need to lose a whole person 102 lb(God that is a lot). But i know that it is just a # and i will just have to chip away at it in small bits.

Hello everyone! I am new here and just thought I would introduce myself. My name is Laurie and I am in the Sunrise Beach/Laurie area. Yeah, I got named after the town....

So anyways I am 43 and deal daily with depression, anxiety/panic disorder, insomia, and stage 3 kidney disease. My current goal is to gain 35 pounds because I am grossly underweight. Some people say they would give anything in the world to be as skinny as me...I wouldn't....it's no fun being sick all the time.

Now on to the not so depressing stuff... I am the mother of 7 beautiful, grown children, and grandmother to 1 1/2 (the other one will be here in May!). My interests outside of getting healthy are crafting (crochet, knit, rug weaving, and more) and genealogy.

Life is like money, SPEND IT WISELY!

Hi Everyone! Like Sarah, I have been in Spark People before, lost over 25 pounds, developed a healthy lifestyle, and am back again after a couple of years! So I know I can do this again. I lost several very, very dear friends of mine along with trying to do my program without much, now no support, here I am. I have a DH of almost 44 years, 3 adult girls, 1 dog and 2 cats, 9 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, and many "grand pets." I had a huge houseful for 3 to 7 days over the Thanksgiving Holidays so my DH and I are "listening" to the silence, although we loved all the noise when it was here. I live in Wildwood, which is a suburb in West County St. Louis, not too far from 6 Flags, if that helps!

My DH and I have many medical challenges but are positive and proactive in dealing with them. We are very close to an excellent gym (any advice about joining?) and almost to anything we could want within driving distance. However, after spending time living about 1 mile out of Washington, DC, my sense of driving distance is probably different than others?

Just glad to be here. emoticon emoticon Living one day @ a time!

My name is Jacob and I live on a farm in the Lake of the Ozarks area, I'm 73 years old, I've had cancer, 2 heart attacks, 3 stents, a stroke, an artificial hip, diabetes, arthritis, it seems like I better do something about this extra 100+ pounds I'm carrying around ... I've been with SparkPeople 5 days now and have been pretty faithful in staying within or under 1500 calories a day ... My mom was the youngest of 13 kids, all 13 lived into their 90's and 100's, so it looks like I've got a few more years left, it would be easier if I was at a normal weight ... Plus, I've got 3 kids and 10 grandchildren to love ...
Obesity is a surplus gone to waist ... Definition of a surpus is: more than what is needed ...

Hello! My name is Sarah, I'm returning to SP after a few years. The first time around I lost about 30 lbs. with SP, so I'm excited to be back and to hopefully kick start my weight loss with motivation and accountability. I live in St. Peters, Mo with my husband and our pets. Looking forward to being an active member of this group! :)

I'm not losing weight, I'm getting rid of it. I have no intention of finding it again.

Yes, there are certainly different ways to communicate and ovaries teams from which to choose. There's no hurry though. The interaction helps us stay focused on our goals -- making small life changes that add up over time. Enjoy!

I loved the "Golden Rule" that was on our childhood rulers back in the 50s. It's as important today as it was back then:
Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Hi, my name is Karen and I live in St. Joseph. I had back surgery 4 weeks ago today, and am doing well. Just started back to work yesterday, & I'm ready to get on with life now that I'm pain free. I'd like to lose 40 lbs. because I think it would be a lot easier on my joints and I would just feel better all the way around. I'm looking forward to utilizing the tracker to keep me accountable. I also like to look at the forums to see what everyone else is doing, as well as to get tips on recipes, etc.

I'm not a very social person anymore, I've had 6 breast surgeries on the left & 8 on the right. I have been trying to stay upbeat ever since my health issues began. At 25 I had a partial hysterectomy, by 29 my first 6 breast surgeries had been performed. There have been numerous other surgeries & reconstructions done, but having 2 small little girls at home during all of this I remained unshaken & always moving forward in a positive way so as not to put my girls, husband & family thru any pity parties or additional stress. Becoming more intuned with my body over the years I have learned how to care for, do things and alleviate most new problems that arise. However the weight issue with health & medication restrictions was becoming more than I could do without the right help, education, influence & camaraderie. Numerous searches, apps, & etc. finally lead me to Sparkpeople!! In just this small amount of time that I've been with this program has been the greatest, most convenient, most comfortable, most rewarding program that I have had the pleasure to interact with!! I pray that I will be able to continue this wonderful journey of better health & education!! Thanks so much, this program has helped me more already than I can ever begin to express!! Sincerely, Mimiwalk2 Thank you all!!!

Hi! I'm Kelly and I live in the Lake Ozark area. Like so many others, I am a rejoiner. Lost quite a bit, but ate my way through my frustrations with a new boss almost all the way back to where I was. Got a renewed attitude. Got rid of the boss and am starting with a renewed sense of what I deserve.

A setback is only a setup for a comeback!

Hi Paula and Jenny! Welcome to the team. There are a lot of informative articles about making healthy food choices and so much more. A few of the exercise videos seem suitable for those with disabilities, for example there are some with seated exercises.

When I was in my 20's I did low calorie and a lot of walking. I lost 60 pounds. I wish it was that easy now at 59.

My name is Paula and I live in Ash Grove. I am disabled and hard to exercise due to chronic pain. I am going to have surgery to help lose weight. I hope as I lose weight it will help my pain.

Hello, my name is Paula. I live in Ash Grove MO. It is Green county. About 17 miles north of Springfield. I am at the starting gate here. I am reading articles and watching videos on this site. I need get my nutrition right, I have chronic pain and fibomyalgia. My pain is in my lower back and my right knee. Had a knee replacement done by a quack doctior. That was 7 years ago and there is nothing they can do for me. Both of these pains have me in a wheelchair or in bed. I plan on having weight loss surgery soon. It is still a lifestyle change and eating the right foods. Exercice will be hard, but I will Start out slow with chair exercises.

Hi Crystal, glad you joined the team! I'm from across the state in St. Louis county. Hope you find a neighbor here.

I loved the "Golden Rule" that was on our childhood rulers back in the 50s. It's as important today as it was back then:
Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Hello.
My name is Michelle & I live in Salem. I have a two daughters (2 & 7mo) & have been married since 2011. I'm a local photographer & Nursing Assistant at our small hospital. I've been a little overweight since I had my oldest daughter in 2012, but I'm ready to get back in shape so I can keep up with her. :)

Hello.
I'm Mary, I live in St. Charles. Mother to a 19 y/o daughter and an 8 y/o son and 1 y/o puggle. Overweight all my life. I've done different things, lost for a while gained it all back. Sometimes more. I'm too old for this and I'm ready to do this for me. Even if just for today, I'm taking control of MY life.
Thanks to each one of you for being here. You encourage me.
Mary

Hi! Im Peg. Never too old to get healthy, right. Had 8 months worth of surgeries last year, and now I am learning to eat a whole new way. At my age it will be a challenge. So I will depend on this site to help. I already get daily Pinterest stuff, so a great set of recipes and exercise to get me started. Look forward to finding out what having "team mates" to help really means. I am a university instructor, solet me know if you need any help studying english, communication, or folklore! My husband of 30+ years and I live in Springfield, or actually Strafford. Looking forward to a great and change filled summer!

Hey, I'm not-so-new but it's been a year or so, so I thought I would re-introduce myself. I live in St. Louis MO and currently joined a gym (Planet Fitness) so figured I would sign back onto Spark to help my progress. I have gained all the weight back that I lost, or more. I no longer have a scale so that's next on my purchasing to-do list. When I figure that out I will reset things so I can have a more accurate view of my transition to healthy living.

Hi, my name is Susan. I was born in Kansas City, grew up in Belton, and returned after many years to live in Hermitage and then Springfield, which I now call that my 'hometown.' I recently retired from Federal Government service after 36 years but ... have failed at retirement as I just took a part-time cashier position at Home Depot. I celebrated my Medicare birthday last year, am happily married, mother of one daughter (stepmom to a daughter and son), and have two Chihuahuas and a Siamese Cat. My goals this year are to completely rebuild a healthy eating habit and to exercise more. Currently live in Utah and loving it so far!

God never ignores knee-mail!

Hi all. My name is Beverly. I'm learning moderation and seeking balance. I'm happy to say I'm to the final 10 pounds but they are on/off. I'm in my 50s, a happy wife and proud Grandma of 10; I'd just like to complete getting fit without the layer of protection that cushions me. So my goals are the last 10 pounds with common sense eating and/or lower body fat to a healthy 22-24%. All the best to all of you,
Beverly

Hi everyone, My name is Stormi, single, 38 yrs old, live in southwestern Mo., and my goal is to be fit by 40. I am not saying that I will be skinny by 40 but fit. I have over 100 pounds to lose and I am tired of not being healthy enough to do things. I want to fit in an airplane seat and not have to be uncomfortable the whole ride or ask for a seatbelt extention...I have to do this..but need lots of motivation.

Hello, just starting setting up my account yesterday, but I joined the site over a year ago. I'm a busy stay at home mom with two kids down in the Ozarks. I'm loving the spring weather we're having and look forward to spending more time outdoors with the kids. I, too, have bad knees (had arthroscopic surgery at a young age) and find quite a few typical workouts to be too much. However, I have found that you can burn just as many calories walking on a treadmill at 2mph than you can on the higher levels (faster speeds put more pressure on your knees because your body weight is compressing on each step). The trick is to increase the incline, which works your leg muscles more, and, I believe, helps to strengthen the knee over time. I've only been a member at the gym for 3 months, but I can already feel a difference in my flexibility and balance and strength, even if I haven't lost any weight yet. My motivation so far has been acknowledging the small victories. Good luck to you.

-Jolene

HEY TEAM! New to Spark! Started a wellness program at work and a co-worker suggested coming here! yay! If I can just remember to get on here and track! haha
Reside in North KC!
Always was thin and great shape - then i hit mid 40's! bad knees. Busy schedule. (working and coaching.) between being busy and worrying about bad knees, I put on the ugly weight, and now I am going for it - just need to feel happy about myself again. I miss being in great shape. I am excited to be motivated by all of you and have my family supporting (helps a lot!)

GO TEAM! emoticon

Happy St. Patrick's Day! emoticon

My name is Mel and I'm like many of you - not new to SparkPeople, but back and trying again. I'm an-almost 33-year old, single mother of one.

I've had success with weight loss in the past, but then I get "cocky" and lazy and it all comes back. I can't say I have a hard time "finding" the time to workout, I have a hard time "making" the time to workout. I'm guilty of giving in to the Winter Doldrums and absolutely LOVE when spring finally arrived because it means MORE. TIME. OUTSIDE.

As my daughter gets older, I do find that it's easier to workout because she can do a lot of things with me. We're planning to start doing some C25K training once the weather here in MO figures out what it's doing (anyone else tired of Mother Nature's Bi-Polar Weather Disorder?!).

In the meantime, I try to commit to walking the dogs for 20-30 minutes after work (when the weather permits) and am currently altering some eating habits.

Good luck to all! WE GOT THIS!

Baby steps will get you where you need to go. . .eventually...you just have to start out by taking the first step.

Hi Everyone! I am not new to Spark, but I am about to "re-new" myself and weight loss struggle. I am 62 and live in Branson West. 10 years ago, I had Gastric ByPass and lost well over 150+ pounds. As a 10 year post op, the old struggles come back and as the pounds inch back up, I renew my "plan" and bring it back down to a number I am willing to not go over. I will NOT ever go back to my old life, but every now and then, I need that "kick" to get back on the right path. I am committing myself to remain on the right path and get back to the loss that I need to strive for.

I am 58, married, mother of 2 adult children and friend to my pet yorkie Lily. I work full time as an NP. I would like to lose about 5 stubborn lbs. I have completed exercise boot camps in the past, but I think I might be too old to push this. I run, jazzercise, work out at a gym. MCB
