Hello. Well, my doctor has never felt the need to retest my glucose levels since going on the metformin over a year ago. They have never retested my hormone levels again either, but they seem to be all over the place. I sometimes get the black blotches on my skin. Also, I used to be thin and super-fit and now I am overweight (poof just like that) and no matter how much exercise I do, nothing happens. I don't lose a pound. It is so frustrating that I often quit working out. I have stated again (last Friday--I have worked out 7 times since then doing at least an hour of cardio each time) and the scale hasn't moved once single ounce. Losing the weight is all I can think about and I don't really think that's healthy. I don't like looking this way anymore!!!! My doctor even gave me adipex, which is an appetite suppressant , and nothing is happening. I am also on Yaz birth control. Any help or advice for weight loss and maintaining my sanity is appreciated!

hi Laruie,
I am a bit late with my welcomes. haha...I live in philly, where in PA do you live?
I had a similar experience when finding out I had PCOS. I was not getting married, but the doc that told me said that I will be infertile and get cancer. it was GREAT....(read tons of sarcasm in that statement).
I just went to a new doc who is awesome (in philly) and I have started Metaformin a few days ago. I am still getting a bit nauseous, hopefully that will go away, but other than that no real side effects. hopefully it will work for me.

anyway, welcome to SP and welcome to the group!

Welcome! What do you mean by doesnt work that well? Is your blood sugar high, or do you mean you arent losing how much weight you want? The major purpose of metformin is to mantain healthy blood sugar levels, along with a healthy diet. It is also supposed to aid weight loss by kind of "normalizing" the way you body handles sugar, so it doesnt always make you lose, but gives you the opportunity. Some people who have trouble with metformin take cinamon supplements, but those are not recommended for people with acid reflux or any gastro problems. There are other medications to aid with irregular periods and hirutism, depending on what you need. If you have questions about medications many of us have tried the different options so please ask!

Hello. I am new to this site also. I am also from PA. I was happy to find people who I can relate to and the struggles I have. I also find that the metformin doesn't really seem to work that well. I am on 1,000 mg twice a day. Are there alternatives to metformin or is this it? My doctors don't really seem all that interested in me and my progress.

Thanks and good luck with your goals!

Hi Laurie! I know trying to lose weight during school can be tough but all the women on this team are very helpful and supportive. I was diagnosed while I was in school too, and I had a really hard time changing my diet. Now that I know more about what I SHOULD be eating it is a lot easier. Im not sure how much information your doctors gave you, but a low carb diet is really good for women with pcos. Especially if you are not taking metformin or any meds at this time. I was uninsured for a while(didnt take any medicine) until I got this job and I actually lost weight and reduced my symptoms just from a lower carb diet. I know a lot of girls have told me once they lost weight they had a much easier time getting pregnant. One step at a time, so just try to take good care of yourself while you are learning to care for others. If you really want to be a mother then it will work out for you. My mom had a really hard time getting pregnant but eventually it worked out for her. I think she has PCOS too, but no one ever diagnosed her. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! We are all here for each other. :)

Hey everyone. I'm Laurie and as you can already tell, I live in Pennsylvania. I was diagnosed with PCOS about a year and a half ago. I found out 2 weeks before my wedding day, which made me a complete wreck and I felt defective and felt sorry for my husband because he was marrying me. BUT.. after all the months of ups & downs, I have at least somewhat adjusted. I still feel defective once in a while, but I think that's just being human. I took Metformin for close to a year before my MD took me off of it because he said it wasn't doing anything for me. I then took Clomid for 2 cycles along with progesterone to give me good old AF. I absolutely hated the way that it made me feel and decided that I needed a break from all the baby stuff. I have since gone down to per diem at work and no longer have health insurance until I graduate from nursing school in May, so the Clomid is now not an option. ALthough, I have not given up hope (at least most days), we're just kind of livin' on prayers these days. There is nothing more that I have ever wanted in my life than to be a mother.

I am about 6' tall and I weight 284 pounds. I would be extremely happy with any weight loss, but my long term goal is 180 pounds. I can't even remember ever weighing that much. I'm a pretty big girl, so that would definitely be healthy for me. When I met my husband a little over 3 years ago and I was 225. See what husbands do to you? :)

Anyways, I haven't really been doing well with the weight loss thing. I start doing really well and then all of a sudden, I lose it. Also, like I said, I'm going to nursing school. That doesn't make anything easy if you add 2 jobs and a sick mother on top of it. I really need to get my life in order, though, or I'll end up with the same problems that my wonderful mother is going through now. She is a Diabetic. Also, even though she had no infertility problems, I believe she probably has PCOS herself. She has a lot of the symptoms.

So.. I definitely need a weight loss buddy if anyone would be interested.. just in simple chatting or whatever else.. I need to do this for myself and for my life. I want to be healthy and happy. I think that would be the best gift that I could ever give myself.
