Just a friendly reminder to all of the new friends and old friends too...

Per SP rules and regulations..we are NOT allowed to put our Etsy site as a 'link' in our personal signature..we can add it just typed in only. It's considered selling on SP and thats not what we're here for! If you have a blog you can link up your blog and of course there you can have your Etsy link..we love our SP..so lets make sure we're all on the same page.

OUR HEALTHY REFLECTIONS FOR THE DAY..did YOU read it? emoticon

The present is what slips by us while we're pondering the past and worrying about the future.

- Ziggy, cartoon foible

How do you keep everything in perspective?

Is there anything that Ziggy doesn't know? In the cartooning universe, he's often placed in hopeless situations, pitted against a world that doesn't make sense. He's an agreeable punch line for the quirks of human nature. Yet he's able to brush off his mishaps and focus on the opportunities that today brings. He can also look to the future with hope, knowing full well that more struggles may lie ahead. Most of all, he can look at himself and have a good chuckle. Do you make yourself anxious about things that might happen or stew over mistakes you've made? Don't let a preoccupation with tomorrow or yesterday rob your ability to face that crazy world with a smile. For Ziggy, today is today. It's not a good day; it's not a bad day. It's a day. And he knows that it's important to give that day the value it deserves.

I found a quick list of why it is important to eat a variety of colors of vegetables and fruits. I thought it was a good reminder...

-Red-Purple
Example: blueberries, plums, beets, grapes
Phytochemicals: anthocyanins (subgroup of flavonoids)
What they do: improve circulation, aid in cancer prevention, protect the brain

-Red
Example: tomatoes and tomato products, red grapefruit
Phytochemical: lycopene (carotenoid)
What it does: aid in cancer prevention, specifically prostate cancer
Example: cherries, strawberries, raspberries, watermelon
Phytochemicals: anthocyanins
What they do: improve circulation, aid in cancer prevention, protect the brain

-Orange
Example: carrots, pumpkins, apricots, mangoes
Phytochemicals: carotenoids, betacarotene
What they do: protect cells, neutralize free radicals, enhance immune system

-Orange-Yellow
Example: oranges, peaches, pineapples
Phytochemicals: carotenoids, vitamin C
What they do: protect cells, neutralize free radicals, enhance immune system

-Yellow-Green
Example: spinach, kale, collard greens, bell peppers, corn
Phytochemicals: lutein (carotenoid)
What it does: may protect the eyes

-Green
Example: cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts
Phytochemicals: sulphorapane
What it does: aid in cancer prevention

-White-Green
Example: garlic, onion, pears
Phytochemicals: sulfides
What they do: protect cellular structures, may lower LDL (bad cholesterol)
Example: pears, apples, asparagus, celery
Phytochemicals: flavonoids
What they do: may protect cell membranes

Note: For each group only one or two families of phytochemicals and nutrients are listed. Keep in mind that thousands of them exist.

Have a great "eating the rainbow" day! And NO, skittles or M&M's Do N

DIGESTION TIME OF VARIOUS FOODS
(approx. time spent in stomach before emptying)

Water when stomach is empty, leaves immediately and goes into intestines,
Juices Fruit vegetables, vegetable broth - 15 to 20 minutes.
Semi-liquid (blended salad, vegetables or fruits) - 20 to 30 min.
Fruits
Watermelon - 20 min.digestion time.
Other melons - Canteloupe, Cranshaw, Honeydew etc. - 30 min.
Oranges, grapefruit, grapes - 30 min.
Apples, pears, peaches, cherries etc. - digest in 40 min.

Vegetables
Raw tossed salad vegetables - tomato, lettuces, cucumber, celery, red or green pepper, other succulent vegetables - 30 to 40 min. digestion. -
Steamed or cooked vegetables
Leafy vegetables - escarole, spinach, kale, collards etc. - 40 min. - Zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, string beans, yellow squash, corn on cob - all 45 min. digestion time
Root vegetables - carrots, beets, parsnips, turnips etc. - 50 min.

Semi-Concentrated Carbohydrates - Starches
Jerusalem artichokes & leafy, acorn & butternut squashes, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yam, chestnuts - all 60 min. digestion.

Concentrated Carbohydrates - Grains
Brown rice, millet, buckwheat, cornmeal, oats (first 3 vegetables best) - 90 min.

Legumes & Beans - (Concentrated Carbohydrate & Protein)
Lentils, limas, chick peas, peas, pigeon peas, kidney beans, etc. - 90 min. digestion time
soy beans -120 min. digestion time

Seeds & Nuts
Seeds - Sunflower, pumpkin, pepita, sesame - Digestive time approx. 2 hours.
Nuts - Almonds, filberts, peanuts (raw), cashews, brazil, walnuts, pecans etc. - 2 1/2 to 3 hours to digest.

Dairy
Skim milk, cottage or low fat pot cheese or ricotta - approx. 90 min. digestion time
whole milk cottage cheese - 120 min. digestion
whole milk hard cheese - 4 to 5 hours digestion time

Animal proteins
Egg yolk - 30 min. digestion time
Whole egg - 45 min.
Fish - cod, scrod, flounder, sole seafood - 30 min. digestion time
Fish - salmon, salmon trout, herring, (more fatty fish) - 45 min. to 60 digestion time
Chicken - 1 to 2 hours digestion time (without skin)
Turkey - 2 to 2 hours digestion time (without skin)
Beef, lamb - 3 to 4 hours digestion time
Pork - 4 to 5 hours digestion time

(Editor's notes
Note1: raw animal proteins have much faster digestion times than the above times for cooked/heated animal proteins.
Note2: The digestion times given are under an ideal situation of eating only one food, chewing well, and having efficient digestion, as is the case e.g. after a fast. They are digestion times for optimally healthy persons, with good eating habits. The digestion times are to a large part derived from Dr. Gian-Cursio's and Dr. Bass' practices.
Digestion times are much longer on a conventional diet, and for persons with non-optimized digestive systems, or persons lacking in energy, and for meals with many ingredients put together haphazardly = not in the optimum sequential order.)

After stomach emptying: Small intestinal tract Bearing in mind that the small intestine is 4 - 6 metres long, its motility is a very efficient process, as all its contents are moved right the way through in about 4 hours. In the immediate response to eating, the characteristics of motility are geared up to preventing movement of contents from the upper regions, so as to allow digestion and absorption to take place here. The rate of movement of the residual contents after these events is then very rapid.

Large Intestine Transit
Unlike the emptying of the stomach and the movement through the small intestine, transit through the colon is slow and in normal subjects it takes up to 48 hours for the contents to move through the ascending, transverse and descending segments of the colon to the rectum to defecation (potty time!!).

NOW THIS IS VERY INTERESTING..WONDER IF IT ALL WORKS

Subject: Interesting Stuff

How many of these did YOU know about?

A sealed envelope - Put in the freezer for a few hours, then slide a
knife under the flap. The envelope can then be resealed.
(hmmmmmm...)

========================================
Use Empty toilet paper roll to store appliance cords. It keeps them
neat and you can write on the roll what appliance it belongs to.

=============================
For icy door steps in freezing temperatures: get warm water and put
Dawn dish washing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won't
refreeze. (wish I had known this for the last 40 years!)

=============================
To remove old wax from a glass candle holder, put it in the freezer for
a few hours. Then take the candle holder out and turn it upside down. The
wax will fall out.

========================================
============
Crayon marks on walls? This worked wonderfully! A damp rag, dipped
in baking soda. Comes off with little effort (elbow grease that is!).

=============================
Permanent marker on appliances/counter tops (like store receipt
BLUE!) rubbing alcohol on paper towel.

=============================
Whenever I purchase a box of S.O.S Pads, I immediately take a pair of
scissors and cut each pad into halves. After years of having to throw
away rusted and unused and smelly pads, I finally decided that this would
be much more economical. Now a box of S.O.S pads last me indefinitely!
In fact, I have noticed that the scissors get 'sharpened'' this way!

==============================
Blood stains on clothes? Not to worry! Just pour a little hydrogen
peroxide on a cloth and proceed to wipe off every drop of blood. Works
every time! (Now, where to put the body?) LOL

==============================
Use vertical strokes when washing windows outside and horizontal
for inside windows. This way you can tell which side has the streaks.
Straight vinegar will get outside windows really clean. Don't wash windows
on a sunny day. They will dry too quickly and will probably streak.

==============================
Spray a bit of perfume on the light bulb in any room to create a lovely
light scent in each room when the light is turned on.

==============================
Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers and your clothes will
smell freshly washed for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels
and linen.

==============================
Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3
hours prior to burning.

===============================
To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a paper bag and add the
flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt
and leave your artificial flowers looking like new! Works like a charm!

===============================
To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or
two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to
a boil on stove top.

===============================
Spray your TUPPERWARE with nonstick cooking spray before pouring
in tomato based sauces and there won't be any stains.

===============================
Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will
keep for weeks.

===============================
When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring out the
corn's natural sweetness

===============================
Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half, and rub it on your
forehead. The throbbing will go away.
(I prefer to soak the lime in Gin and rub it on my tongue first)

===============================
Don't throw out all that leftover wine: Freeze into ice cubes for future
use in casseroles and sauces ........ Left over wine? What's that? :)

===============================
To get rid of itch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the area
and you will experience instant relief.

===============================
Ants, ants, ants everywhere ... Well, they are said to never cross a chalk
line. So, get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever ants
tend to march. See for yourself.

===============================
Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still,
leaves a lovely smell to the shine.

===============================
When you get a splinter, reach for the scotch tape before resorting to
tweezers or a needle. Simply put the scotch tape over the splinter, and
then pull it off. Scotch tape removes most splinters painlessly and easily.

===============================
Now look what you can do with Alka Seltzer........
Clean a toilet. Drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets, wait twenty minutes, brush
and flush. The citric acid and effervescent action clean vitreous China.

===============================

Clean a vase.
To remove a stain from the bottom of a glass vase or cruet, fill with water
and drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets.

===============================
Polish jewelry.
Drop two Alka Seltzer tablets into a glass of water and immerse the
jewelry for two minutes.

================================
Clean a thermos bottle.
Fill the bottle with water, drop in four Alka Seltzer tablets, and let soak
for an hour (or longer, if necessary).

================================
Unclog a drain.
Clear the sink drain by dropping three Alka Seltzer tablets down the
drain followed by a cup of Heinz White Vinegar. Wait a few minutes,
and then run the hot water.

===============================
Do your friends a favor. Pass this timely (and some not-so-timely)
information on to a friend! I just did.

Makes you wonder about ingesting Alka Seltzer, doesn't it?

DID YOU KNOW that YOU SHOULD NEVER JUDGE

Never Judge.....

'Some people!' snorted a man standing behind me in the long line at the
grocery store.

'You would think the manager would pay attention and open another line,
said a woman. I looked to the front of the line to see what the hold up
was and saw a well dressed, young woman, trying to get the machine to
accept her credit card. No matter how many times she swiped it, the
machine kept rejecting it.

'It's one of them welfare card things. Those people need to get a job
like everyone else,' said the man standing behind me. The young woman
turned around to see who had made the comment. 'It was me,' he said,
pointing to himself.

The young lady's face began to change expression. Almost in tears, she
dropped the welfare card onto the counter and quickly walked out of the
store. Everyone in the checkout line watched as she began running to her
car. Never looking back, she got in and drove away.

After developing cancer in 1977 and having had to use food stamps; I
had learned never to judge anyone, without knowing the circumstances of
their life. This turned out to be the case today.

Several minutes later a young man walked into the store. He went up to
the cashier and asked if she had seen the woman. After describing her,
the cashier told him that she had run out of the store, got into her
car, and drove away.

'Why would she do that?' asked the man. Everyone in the line looked
around at the fellow who had made the statement. 'I made a stupid
comment about the welfare card she was using. Something I shouldn't
have said. I'm sorry, said the man.

'Well, that's bad, real bad, in fact. Her brother was killed in
Afghanistan two years ago. He had three young children and she has taken
on that responsibility. She's twenty years old, single, and now has
three children to support,' he said in a very firm voice.

'I'm really truly sorry. I didn't know,' he replied, shaking both his
hands about.

The young man asked, 'Are these paid for?' pointing to the shopping cart
full of groceries. 'It wouldn't take her card,' the clerk told him.

'Do you know where she lives?' asked the man who had made the comment.

'Yes, she goes to our church.'

'Excuse me,' he said as he made his way to the front of the line. He
pulled out his wallet, took out his credit card and told the cashier,
'Please use my card. PLEASE!' The clerk took his credit card and began
to ring up the young woman's groceries.

Hold on,' said the gentleman. He walked back to his shopping cart and
began loading his own groceries onto the belt to be included. 'Come on
people. We got three kids to help raise!' he told everyone in line.
Everyone began to place their groceries onto the fast moving belt. A few
customers began bagging the food and placing it into separate carts. 'Go
back and get two big turkeys,' yelled a woman, as she looked at the
man. 'NO,' yelled the man. Everyone stopped dead in their tracks. The
entire store became quiet for several seconds. 'Four turkeys,' yelled
the man. Everyone began laughing and went back to work. When all was
said and done, the man paid a total of $1,646.57 for the groceries. He
then walked over to the side pulled out his check book, and began
writing a check using the bags of dog food piled near the front of the
store for a writing surface. He turned around and handed the check to
the young man. 'She will need a freezer and a few other things as well,'
he told the man.

The young man looked at the check and said, 'This is really very
generous of you.'

'No,' said the man. 'Her brother was the generous one.'

Everyone in the store had been observing the odd commotion and began to
clap And I drove home that day feeling very American.

We live in the Land of the free, because of the Brave! Remember our
Troops of Yesterday and Today !

HERES SOMETHING ELSE INTERESTING!

Good afternoon!

We wanted to let you know about two new changes we've made to the Nutrition (Food) Tracker, based on feedback and suggestions from our members.

1. Now you can copy meals from one day to another. This has been a long-standing request from our members who eat a lot of the same (or similar) foods and meals day-to-day and week-to-week. It will help you save time when tracking! Once you track at least one food for a meal, a Copy this meal to another day link will display next to the meal name. Click the link and a calendar will pop up, where you can choose which day to copy the meal to. It will automatically copy that meal onto the day you choose.

2. You can also adjust your grocery list to provide for up to 8 people. To see this, click on the grocery list for the week (near the bottom right of your Nutrition/Food Tracker page) and you will see Number of people serving in the upper right hand portion of the page. Change the number (from 1-8) and click Update list and you will see it change the list.

We hope you enjoy these new Food Tracker improvements!

I'm passing this on per Coach Jens request

****************

Hi Everyone

We've started to have more of a problem recently with "chain" messages. For example, you're asked to send something along to 10 of your friends, and before you know it you're getting this same message (or a similar one) from lots of different people.

I think a lot of these are very nice, but not everyone wants them. So we're going to ask that people stop forwarding these along- either as SparkMail messages or comments on SparkPages. Please pass the word along to Teams you're on and individuals if they send them to you, letting them know that we're trying to discourage it. Also, if you get one of these messages, please do not "reply all" when responding to the sender, since that just multiplies the emails for everyone else.

If the problem continues, we'll make a formal policy against them. But for right now, we're hoping this will help.

Let me know if you have questions! Thanks!

Coach Jen

THIS JUST CAME IN FROM COACH JEN!

Hi Everyone!

In addition to all of the exercise demos that you can do from home, we now have demos of gym equipment too. That's been a common request from members, so we're happy that we could get it done!

These demos can be found in the Fitness Resource Center, the add-a-exercise functionality in the fitness tracker, and they will also be included in the randomly generated routines generated by the fitness page.

Thanks!

Coach Jen

SP HAS GIVEN US A NEW TOOL..USE IT!

We launched a new feature today called SparkStreaks, where you can challenge yourself to reach certain goals every day (or week or month if you'd like). We know that members track streaks on their own, so we wanted to create this feature to make it easier to track. Streaks are a great way to give you extra motivation to reach your goals.

You can view and manage your SparkStreaks by clicking on My Home/Start, then finding a link to SparkStreaks in the "myTools" section on the left of the page. When you click to your Streaks page, you'll see all the Streaks you are tracking. We made it so everyone has a Streak for logging in to the site and spinning the SparkPoints wheel and for drinking 8 cups of water a day. You can click the "Start/Manage Streaks" button to decide what goals you want to track a Streak, and to choose if you want to share your Streaks publicly. You can share Streaks on your SparkPage, and for SparkTeam goals you can share your Streak on your SparkTeam goal page. When you share on your SparkPage, your Streaks will appear on left side of your SparkPage under your main pictures.

To track your Streak you simply track your goals as your normally would. You can click the "See More SparkStreaks" link on your Start page to see details of your streaks, including:
- Your current streak length for the goal.
- The longest streak you ever had for the goal.
- A consistency percentage for the goal. Even if you drop off a streak, you can still see how often you did the goal. So, if you did the goal 9 of 10 days, you'd have a 90% consistency rate. If you want to re-start this counting to today, just click the "reset" link in the Consistency section.

We hope you like this feature and that it can help keep you motivated to reach some amazing goals!

Thanks!

Hi Everyone!

We wanted to let you know about a new feature available in Teams, that was a request from a lot of members.

You can now run a search within specific SparkTeam Forums. You'll find a search box at the top of the Team Forums on the main SparkTeam page, and then within a SparkTeam message board you'll find the search at the top of the messages or topics.

We hope this makes it easier to find what you need in your Teams!

Thanks so much!

Coach Jen

I borrowed this from another team..thought you might want to KNOW??s

We're happy to announce that we re-launched some of our key tools so they can be used on mobile phones that can connect to the internet. We basically simplified the tools so they work on smaller screens.

You can login to use our food and cardio trackers, helping you keep up with tracking while on the go. You can also do a quick food lookup or browse foods from popular restaurants, for when you quickly want help to make a better food choice.

You can access this by going to mobile.sparkpeople.com on your mobile phone. You can click on the link below to learn more about our mobile site, including finding out how to interact with other mobile users on SparkPeople.

Finally, even if you don't have a mobile phone, if you know someone who does you can let them know about this! As with everything else on SparkPeople, it is totally free. www.sparkpeople.com/resource/mobile.

DO YOU KNOW..WHO YOU ARE?

Grade your self based on these questions to see what kind of exerciser you are.

1. When I think about physical activity, I:
a. can't wait to put on my walking shoes
b. really want to exercise but need a push
c. dread the idea of moving a muscle, but am happy once I get moving

2. When I am physically active, I enjoy exercising:
a. by myself at my own pace
b. with a team or group
c. with one or two buddies

3. I exercise because:
a. I want to stay in shape, slim down, or improve my health
b. I want to see my friends and catch up on the latest news
c. the weather is nice or I just feel like it

4. When I take part in a physical activity, I usually:
a. plan the event ahead of time
b. participate when someone else has set up the activity or attend a class
c. pull it together quickly and do something active when the mood strikes

5. Others see me as:
a. a leader
b. a team player
c. someone who goes along with a good idea

6. I enjoy physical activities that are:
a. set by my own routine
b. set by a professional, teacher, or group
c. spontaneous

For every answer, give yourself:
A = 1 point
B = 2 points
C = 3 points

If you scored ...
6-9 points: you are a self-motivator
10-14 points: you are a team player
15-18 points: you are spontaneous

Self-Motivator
You like structure and organization. Creating and sticking to your own exercise plan is relatively easy, but you may find yourself losing interest in your usual routine. Try adding a few new activities such as biking, rowing, gardening, or hiking. Or try alternating your favorite workouts such as walking, swimming, and weightlifting on different days of the week.

Team Player
To you, exercise is a way to socialize and stay connected to friends and family Group activities and classes are a natural selection for you. Sign up for an exercise class; put together a group of friends for walking; or join a team sport or sports league such as bowling, softball, or doubles tennis.

Spontaneous
You love freedom and loathe conforming to rigid rules. Things that get you moving might include a call from friends who need a fourth player for a round of golf, a hike in the woods to enjoy a beautiful fall day, or a walk to the store when you are out of milk. These activities are great, but make sure you're doing something active on most days.

Of course, I don't want to get sick!!!!! And lucky for me I was not stricken with some awful illness because I thought that way. That was way back when I was a teenager and didn't know better.

Did you know that when I was in high school a friend of mine who weighed more than I did got deathly ill and lost a whole lot of weight. Back then, I wished I could get sick too .... how awful is that.

And did you know that the irony of that is that I NEVER get sick. I take after my mom .. she is 90 .. and is just now having a few health problems related to old age.

Ever wonder how to nominate a team leader as a leader of the month-one way is when the monthly notice comes, there is a link to nominate your favorite leader-another way is by going to the community button on the top of the page, then click on spark teams-right above the search for spark team name-there is a link to nominate your favorite leader.

I know that you all have a little DO YOU KNOW in you, so play along!

Do you know that when I was in my twenties. A very stupid friend of mine decided that he no longer wanted to live and ate rat poisoning! He stiffened up to the point of being unable to get him into a car so we laid him on the hood of the car and I laid on top of him and grabbed on tight. We were in a town unfamiliar to us so we didn't know where the hospital was and drove around town that way until we did get him there. And of course had to explain to the police what happened..this was my vacation.. It's a wonder I didn't get killed..strange what we can do in an emergency!

OK..it's your turn
