Hi Shel,
Good for you. Most of us love this way of eating. Read the thread for new members to learn about JUDDD and it will give you practical info and tips and I'm posting this link to Dr's team. I was doing this plan for a long time before the book came out so you really don't need it unless you want to buy it. I have the book that Dr Johnson sent me. You can get as much info at his site and this team as the book will give you, but it's just up to you. The only thing some of us add is the water only day. He mentions it briefly in his book. He doesn't call it a fast but says eating only every other day is the thing that helps most, then he adds that most people can't or won't do it. Once you get used to it, it's great. I'm doing only water today after this weekend. It is not required but some of us find that it's a great tool to use after a occasional day of too many calories.

Hi to everyone,
My name is Shel and I have been a SP member since June. I have lost a total of 70 lbs, but only about 8 more since joining Sp. Seems I am at a very stubborn plateau, I workout often but nothing seems to help much. I came across this team through a dear Sparkfriend. I am hoping this will be what I need to move the weight, I have another 25-30lbs to lose. So I am excited. This will be my first day, and I will be drinking the EAS, and eating a small amount of protien and vegatables. I dont have the book, so I dont even know if it is neccessary?
Heres to hoping we all can be successful with this one.

I am new to this group and this diet. Sounds like something I can do. Fighting with the 80 lbs. I gained after moving back to the US with all the processed foods.

Can you be certain that at this very moment you are not a dragonfly dreaming that you are a person?

Welcome Nicole, good luck with the plan. Bug has posted reams of good information about the plan, take a look around and you'll find a wealth of information. I don't like counting calories either, that's one of the reasons why I try to do a water fast on some of my "down" days.

I hear that Bob! I didn't take up running until a couple of years ago when I hit my original goal weight. Now I am there but I want to adjust it lower so as to avoid hurting myself (I tend to hurt myself more when I am heavier and try to run) and to run faster. I find it a quick speed boost to be lighter. ;) I am such a running dork. Lol. So now I want to be closer to the middle range for my height, 5ft9 or so (a little taller but not sure how much, but not quite 5ft10) so around 145lbs which I haven't seen since - well since I was 23 when I weighed 121lbs (yikes, thats too skinny for me). In high school I was closer to the lower end of my weight range for my height around 130lbs without much thought. I want to get back there to some degree. However I grew a little taller after that so I hope to be about 10-15lbs more than high school.

Michelle, good luck on your marathon training. Everytime I try to get back into running, I seem to injure myself a month or two later. Hopefully, I'll be able to stay more healthy the next time I take up running. ~ Bob

Zakaraiah, I think you're fine - the website has a calculator on it to help you calculate your caloric needs to get to 20% or less of the cals for your induction period. It all depends on what your body needs in a day and then figure 20% of that, I run a lot so mine was 478 for 20% and 598 for the upper limit of 25% (upper limit for induction if 20% is too uncomfortable). I seem to do fine with just sticking to around 500 because if I ran that day, my caloric needs for the day tend to be around 2700-3000 depending on my mileage! I just try to average it. I did a down day last week at about 598 cals but also ran 8 miles that night...it worked well for me.

Hello! I am new to this team and I am checkin' in! :) My name is Michelle, I am 34 and mother to 4, step mom to 2. I work full time for our family business doing computer/internet techie stuff and technical training. In '07 I lost about 60lbs and early this year I gained about 20 of it back. So this summer I set out to lose it again. I lost 15 of it then started the Alternate Day Diet and lost 5 more. Now I just have 15 more I want to lose for my ultimate dream weight. I am five foot nine inches tall and very curvy so 145 is sorta skinny for me, but that's my goal! Right now the Alternate Day Diet got me to 160lbs so I am excited. I did it for two weeks but this last week I sort of strayed off and did 1200 cals a day or so lol. I guess that's not a big stray but there weren't really any down days there...then again I also didn't do my exercise either! I normally run and most of the time average about 20 miles a week and I am currently training for a marathon in Dec. However I have been such a slacker, I might have to just go for another half marathon instead. Either way my main and most important priority is not my race but exercising consistently and keeping my weight under control. Racing is secondary to that. If I meet my weight loss goals then I will work on others beyond that. My main focus is getting more weight off! I think this diet strategy is one I can stick with for the long haul. I just have to get over my wishy-washy nature and make up my mind to just do it!

Hopefully I can drop another 5lbs in the next couple of weeks! If so I will be so happy!

See you guys around! :)

-Michelle

P.S. I have been using protein shakes from "Wonderslim" and they are 100 cals, 15gms protein and have 20-35% of the daily value of vitamins and minerals. I have them in a cup and sip on them all day, often I don't need more than 3 in a day and have a large salad with calorie free or fat free dressing for a total usually under 500 cals. It's working well and I hope I can stick to it again, after taking a few days off last week, I need to get back in gear! Tomorrow is a DD, today was an Up day...here I go!

Hi Zakaraiah, welcome and good luck. I've had some success with the plan, but not as much as Bug. I have trouble doing 500 calorie down days since my appetite gets revved up everytime I put food in my mouth. So I usually try to do a water fast on my down days. I find it easier to do this than eating small meals. When I stick to a Mon/Wed/Fri fast, I do well. However, you have to be in the right mindset to stick to your plan. ~ Bob

Normally I would say to stick to the 500 only but until you get the lower calorie shakes, it's OK. Definitely plan on 500 only as that's what makes this work. Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome, Bug, and congratulations on your success on this plan, it's definitely encouraging!

I'm using Slim-Fast shakes today, though I am looking into using a less sugary shake like you suggested if I can find them at a store close by for similar cost. I was wonder, today I am drinking three shakes, which comes to 570 calories. I know that 500 calories is the recommended amount on a down day, but on the calculator on Dr. Johnson's site, it gives me 600 calories on down days. Do you think three shakes at 570 is okay on down days, or do I really need to keep it below 500 for induction?

This group looks like a good resource, I'll definitely be checking in and updating on my progress as well. I've committed myself to giving this a shot for at least a month, no matter how hungry I get on down days. I'm hoping at the end of a month, the results will have been significant enough to keep on going after that. I've got over 100 pounds to lose, so I'm hoping I'll be getting a quick start.

I have lost 60 lbs on this plan. Once your body adjusts to the lower down day calories it will become easier. The first day is the hardest, but tomorrow you will see a 1-6 lb loss, maybe more if you're very heavy. What kind of shakes are you using? Slim fast has more sugar and more calories. I use the EAS Advant Edge Carb Control with 17 protein and 110 calories. They can be found down with the body building stuff by the pharmacy at Walmart. Some don't use the shakes but if you eat small amounts of food be sure you know how many calories are in them. The 500 down day is the key to success. That and mindset are crucial. We wish you luck...Dr. suggests sipping the shakes. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hello, everyone. I recently found out about the Alternate Day Diet, and have decided to give it a shot. This plan seems to be perfect for me. I'm a 24 y/o guy who doesn't really cook, so complicated diets with tons of recipes and rules don't work for me. Neither does strict everyday calorie counting, because I become obsessed with every choice, and the constant denial of what I really want to eat becomes grueling. I'm hoping that knowing I can have french fries tomorrow if I want to will make the down days something I can stick to.

No one I know has tried this, so I'd love to hear some personal stories about how this has worked for you? How many of you have lose weight using this plan? It'd help me to know that this really does work for people.

I'm on my first down day today. I have a lot to lose, so my up day calories are in the 3000 range. So to be honest, after my first two shakes today, I'm still feeling terribly hungry. But I'm hoping that I will adjust and become used to eating less.

There's a lot going on on this site, so I haven't really explored all of it, but if anyone would like to talk, I'm certainly interested in friends to keep each other motivated.

I'm new to the JUDDD way of eating, and am excited to get on board! I would like to lose 20 more pounds, but I don't know if that is reasonable for me, since that would put me at 5 pounds below a weight that I maintained for several years. I would be satisfied with 10. Today is my second down day, although on the first down day I ate more like 1000 calories than 500. Even though we are not supposed to weigh after an up day, I was still down a pound after the up day, so I am glad about that. I'm also new to SparkPeople, so I am trying to find my way around!

Thanks for the advice. Today is actually my first down day, so we'll see how it goes. Doing down days during the week probably won't be so hard - at the job that I work at, I stay so busy that I don't have time to stop to eat during the day. It's weekends that will be more of a challenge! I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Welcome Jennifer, we're happy that you're here.
On your down day it is just fine to eat raw veggies and fish, turkey (Chicken is my preference, that's why I put it in there) Keep in mind that that the protein will help with the hunger, along with the water. We're rooting for you! You will find if you stick closely to the plan it will soon become like second nature and you'll feel so much better.. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi Jennifer, and welcome.

I'm not an expert on this diet, by any means, but from what I understand, you can eat pretty much anything (anything healthy!) as long as you keep it under 500 cals on your down days. It is especially important to keep under 500 for the first 2 weeks of DD in order for this WOE to work.

Best of luck and welcome to the group!
Looking forward to getting to know you

Hi!
I'm Jennifer, and I'm sarting this plan on Sunday )9/20/09.) I have a question: if I'm on a down day, can I snack on raw veggies like celery or cucumbers (that have little to no calories?) Also, in the post about how to do the diet, it says a lot about eating chicken. Can I also eat other lean meats (like fish, or turkey) on my down days?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Beachbum, welcome!

I'm also a big snacker in the evenings. Im finding it hard to keep my cals down during DDs but I'm managing to so far. I did mess up yesterday, but am hopefully making up for it today on a water fast!

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Thanks Bugs for answering my post. Now I feel I got more helpful information about the JUDDD plan, than I did on another message board I post to.

I'm on the down day today and I'm down to 437 for the day.

Thanks again.

Keeping the food under control by diligently doing the down day and water fasts. On page 141 Dr says that if you're not losing, 98% of the time it's because you're eating too much on the down day. With this plan it is so important to keep your down days at 500 or less because if we don't, we lose control over food and lose the ability to lose weight the way we should. Many try to eat more and find themselves unsuccessful at losing and unable to get the mindset back. Doing only 500 but not consistently will deter you from losing steadily. You may be able to maintain by doing it sporadically but you have to keep your mindset in diet mode. If you lose your diet mentality (or 500 down day mentality) you lose the battle. This plan does work but if you start slacking it's just like any other diet. It won't produce the results we want but will produce the same results we get with other plans. I have an incurable disease (being fat) but with medication (calorie restriction) I can get into remission. (to our goal) But that is not the end of it, unless we keep taking our medication as needed, we won't stay in remission. It's a life long plan, I will never be able to eat as others eat. If they are thin, they don't have the disease, but if they are fat they aren't taking the right medicine. I lost 60 lbs with this plan. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi Everyone,I'm new to the spark people message board but not to the Nutrition tracker. I'm a retired receptionist that lives with my DH.

I started the JUDDD the middle of July and I'm finding it to be a very interesting way of counting calories. I lost 6 lbs the first week on it and than I'm started to fall off the wagon on my DD's . I find that I'm a big snacker especially in the evenings, and on my DD's to tend to go up on my calorie count from 500 to 900.I tried to lower my UP day calories from 1600-1400 to make the method work, but so far no results.

Bug,if this JUDDD plan worked for you so long what the secret to your success.

Bug, That's amazing that you've been doing this plan for so long. It proves that it really is something that can be done permanently. I hope you feel better soon. emoticon

Hello Bug..it's great to hear about your life and successes..it truly is. Thanks for sharing. Amazing how you lost and maintained for so long. Our bodies are complicated and you're probably right..it may have had serious adjustments after the shock of such surgeries on it. I hope you get over this hump soon! Good luck.

PRJ, No..I don't think I lost the whole 11 lbs in one week. I had been cutting back my cals (for about 4 weeks) before starting JUDDD last week. So I'm pretty sure that some of it was from that time period as well as the week on JUDDD. I'm still very happy about it. It's always nice to see a loss..no matter how great or small!

Babynurse, Thank you. Have you lost the 11 lbs in just one week? That's good. Are you feeling good? emoticon

I've had this team for over 2 years and so I see the things that different people experience when first starting. According to what I've seen is that the people who feel weak,(not many of these)are weak because of needing this plan the most and if they stick with it will feel better shortly. It's like when some people fast (not required), some feel worse than others. The toxins will make you feel bad until the toxins are gone. I wish you success and can tell you that I have never been healthier than after doing this plan. Right now I have been having some issues with depression because I can't seem to lose the last few lbs and so I am not on this plan. I'm just eating whatever and not feeling near as good as when I stay on plan. I'm hoping to convince my body to let me lose the weight. I'm thinking after almost 3 years my body has decided that my calorie restriction is normal so it won't let me lose. Be assured this in not starvation mode which can only happen if you are below 5% body fat and it took 2 years to come to this. It's like the man who does a lot of physical work (ie, chain gang)and his body adjusts to doing it because it has become the norm. I might add that this was after being at goal for 10 months and 4 operations in a week and a half. I think that it was the operations that helped my body decide not to let me lose anymore. (fear of dying??) That's why I'm not dieting right now but I will never give up this plan because of the good health it gives me. Great blood results too. I will be happy to get back on plan but want to make sure I break free of not losing. Probably more than you wanted to know, sorry...

Welcome to our team!
Congratulations. Feeling tired and weak is not because of the plan. Most people do not feel that way. This plan will give you energy as your body adjusts. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
The weight loss will slow a little, some of it is water from eating less calories which contain less carbs. (If you're eating less, there are less carbs in the food because there is less food)
Just follow the plan closely and your body will adjust to less calories and you will begin to feel great...Again, welcome!

Hello all, Just wanted to post an update. I had my first weigh in. Today marked one week. I lost 6 lbs. I'm wondering if this is too much for one week. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy, but I've been feeling really tired and weak.

Hello, hello!

I'm a newbie..just found out about this diet yesterday and I'm on board today! Best time to start..beginning of the month, beginning of a new life.

I'm 26 years old..I live in South Africa but am American. My husband is South African. I was on antidepressants for a while, so that helped me (quite easily) gain weight. I've been part of SP for a while now, and have been on and off diets. I love to workout, and I'm looking forward to joining a gym now that we're getting settled here in SA. Just moved here. It's been crazy!

I look forward to participating here and keeping track of *hopefully* my progress and that of everyone elses!

Blessed be

xo
